The Nintendo 3DS has had yet another good week in Japan easily fending of the competition to make it the best-selling platform in Japan. In total there were five Nintendo related titles in the software charts, which included Bravely Default and Project X Zone. The Nintendo 3DS’ competitor the PlayStation Vita only managed to achieve sales of 6,134, while the Nintendo 3DS sold 79,300. Here’s the Japanese software and hardware charts.

There isn’t anyspace for sony in the handheld market especialy with the IOS and Android ariving. Remember there was a time when it was basically 100% Nintendo’s market. So I dont understand why peopke say the handheld market is threatened :S.
According to the sales of the GB , GBC and GBA the handheld market is growing year by year . Just becuase sony release an expensive none backwards compatable expensive memory card no game console , does not mean the handheld market is ”threatened”.

Sony need to spend all their attention on the ps3 and ps4 and not making dumb mistakes and business plans. They’ve lots all the exclusives that made me like Playstation, and the ones they have left are getting boring, or just crap.

The GBA sold 90,000,000 right ??? with no competitor. So the handheld market at that time overall was 90,000,000 !!! the DS sold 155,000,000 so thats like a 75% increase of the previous gen not to mention 70,000,000 psp’s sold worldwide aswell so that is a lot of handhelds worldwide!!
So the 3DS is outselling the DS for the same time period and the ps vita isn’t selling well becuase it’s currently too expensive and useless …
But that means the dedicated handheld market is threatened ???

Yeah, everyone acts like the whole handheld market was stolen by mobile gaming, which is not true at all, its all from new consumers. Yeah, some gaming handheld sales will be lost to mobile, but not alot. At all. Mobile gaming is big, but, Cheap. As. Hell. It’s not worth comparing the two.

I’m not surprised the 3DS is kicking ass, but I am a little surprised the Vita is tanking so horribly.
I think it doesn’t have enough to differentiate it from the smartphone market. Great graphics, quality build… It lacks game choices, and there isn’t really a reason to buy it over a smartphone.
Honestly, if Sony had made it a smartphone, and opened the system to run apps, it would probably be doing much, much better.

Honestly, it all comes down to marketing and that’s Sony’s major downfall.
Look at the Kinect. Fastest selling device in history, cost something like $150 at launch and you needed an Xbox 360 to use it – so loads of people got 360’s just for the Kinect – and the device is still nothing special and it really had no killer apps or games that were must have. Half of the people who purchased one barely use it now.
But Microsoft’s massive marketing did the job. Created buzz and people wanted to throw out their money. Same as Apple. They get people to spend upwards of $700 each time they release a new i product. Marketing.
Interesting fact that the Resident Evil still remains on top 3 after weeks of its launch date. I though RE was a franchise that western people liked more. Then again, if Japan still likes Resident Evil, I wonder why the series had turned so “westerny” in the last games. Go figures…

The problem here is that Sony is already selling Vita with a loss. They won´t be able to afford a price drop soon. On the other side, Vita desperately needs a price drop in order to be more interesting and acessible for consumers. Still, problems like the mandatory memory cards and lack of backward compatibility will still prevent some people to buy it. Sony doesn´t have easy choices here.

Sony announced today they will be laying off 2,000 employees in Japan via “early retirement,” according to The Next Web. The layoffs are expected to hit the PlayStation manufacturer’s head office the hardest. 20 percent of the employees will be laid off by the end of the year. The lay off is going to save the company $378 million annually starting in 2013.
This layoff is in line with the plan that was laid out earlier this year when the company announced that it would layoff 10,000 employees, which includes 3,000 to 4,000 in Japan. The restructuring program is expected to cost $945 million.
The restructuring program includes more than just slashing budgets and laying off employees. Sony spent $644 million on Olympus, that will combine the companies camera technologies, as well as focusing on the medical imaging industry.
Sony’s gaming division has also been affected by the restructuring. Sony has closed in Liverpool studio in the UK, as well as Zipper Interactive and BigBig Studios.
Sony had also sold off its chemical productions business in June for $730 million. The company in August announced that it would lay off 1,000 jobs from its handset division, which is being relocated to Japan from Sweden.
Sony in its most recent financial report posted a loss of $310 million, which is an increase from $195.3 million during the same period the year before.

It’s kind of pathetic that the PSP is selling ~2.541 times as much as the Vita.
I’m sad by how low the sales are for the Wii and the DS, but I guess it’s a good thing that the PS2 is selling below a thousand units. The sales for the Wii aren’t too bad in comparison, so hopefully that is due to people waiting for the Wii U instead. As for the DS, are the only models being sold the DSi and the DSi XL? That could explain why the sales are lower than the PS2’s, because unlike the PS3, which now can’t play PS2 discs, there isn’t as much of a reason to get either DSi if you have a 3DS.
I would love the see Bravely Default be localized here!
