Iwata: “We Strive To Regain Nintendo-Like Profits” For Next Fiscal Year

nintendo montageNintendo has just published their annual report for 2013, and includes a personal message from the current President Satoru Iwata. The report follows Nintendo’s quarterly financial results, which was published last week, and saw the Nintendo 3DS boosting profit margins across the board, while the Wii U struggled. Nintendo’s annual report for this year includes a wealth of figures for the clued-up financial whizz-kid, as well as some beautiful pictures recognising that the company grew up with you, as much as you grew up with their games. Iwata’s personal message contains many parts we already know about, like the integration of Miiverse and the Nintendo Web Framework – if you wish to read the full report you can do so here – but below we have chosen the most important parts of his statement.

“Since the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1983, Nintendo has been offering the world unique and original entertainment products under the development concept of hardware and software integration. In the field of home entertainment, where there are few Japanese world-class industries, Nintendo has established a well-known brand truly representing video game culture throughout the world. Our basic strategy is the expansion of the gaming population, which is to encourage as many people in the world as possible, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience, to embrace and enjoy playing video games.

“Nintendo posted an operating loss for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013. However, we strive to regain “Nintendo-like” profits for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 by providing many people with fascinating games and services. We continue to make brand-new and unique proposals, and make efforts for the growth of the home entertainment industry with a mission that is to pleasantly surprise people and put smiles on the faces of everyone Nintendo touches.”

    1. None of those franchises are going to ‘save’ the Wii U..

A better advertising program might, but that makes too much sense for Nintendo, we all know Nintendo love complicating things.

      1. The thing is Nintendo uses software to advertise hardware. Since the Wii U hasn’t actually had any notable software, there’s no point to advertise the non-notable software.

      1. Yeah…Because DONKEY KONG WAS AWAY SO LONG. Starfox/F-Zero makes a return it’ll have the same great sales. DKC: TF wont sell as much as DKCR on Wii. Since its 3 DK games in 3 years. To much DK.

      1. Guess Sony would be ‘not gonna be here for Gen 9 at this rate’ and Microsoft would be ‘spying… on you’ if we go by that…

Actually, I really think they should adopt that.

  1. there are at least 8 3ds games coming up that i want. the wii u needs games urgently. and then nintendo should reach their goals by next year.
especially with their digital sales which gives them greater profits.

    1. Super Mario 3D World in December, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. next year. It’s going to be a while before we see that significant sales boost, despite multiple exclusives coming this year…

    1. Actually Pikmin 3 TV commercials is on almost every kid channel and it is not even funny too. I saw them so much that I actually ignored those commercials. I don’t know where you are or what channel you are on but it is there in my area.

  2. I’m not worried. Nintendo always pulls an ace out of their sleeves (or, a rabbit out of their hat). They’ll do just fine. They always have. Even when the Virtual Boy flopped, it didn’t hurt Nintendo much. Same if the Wii U flops. When you fall off the horse, you get back on (unless you’re like me. Then you’ll never get back on one again. LOL).

But in all seriousness, I don’t think the Wii U will fail. Pikmin 3 just came out, and many more great titles are on the horizon. I’m VERY curious to hear how many Wii U consoles sold just because of Pikmin 3.

    1. Almost everybody says the exact same thing everytime there is any report related to the success of our Empire:

      “Marketing and games”…

The games are already on their way, they cannot speed things up just for the sake of it and marketing will probably improve…

There is no need to recycle the same arguments every damn week just so you can all feel proud about yourselves…

And I’m the same as you Mr.He-Man, I never fall of the “horse”…

      1. “There is no need to recycle the same arguments every damn week just so you can all feel proud about yourselves” wise words Commander.

Currently playing: Pikmin3, MH3U, LEGO City and Toki Tori2. If anyone of you says there´s no games or the wiiu is gathering dust, yo’re not being honest

  3. Yeah it’ll happen just like the 3DS and if you disagree……so? What’s that going to do to Wonderful 101 being an exclusive? um….. Nothing!!!! Not a blooding thing. You haters can bash the Wii U all you want. No matter how much you hate on it, it’s games will be the best!! No go back to spec world!

    1. gta 5, tales of xillia 1&2, destiny, castlevania lords of shadow 2, tales of symphonia 1&2 remake,The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Saints Row 4, Diablo III,Beyond: Two Souls,Battlefield 4,WWE 2K14,Gran Turismo 6,Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain,Rain,South Park: The Stick of Truth,Wolfenstein: The New Order, dragons crown, killer is dead, kingdom hearts, collection, pay day 2 and more

all those games are all upcoming on last gen consoles and wii u doesnt get any of them, have fun retarded fanboy, just wait ill the next gen systems come out.

      1. So…you get those, we get these. Anything else? This is not a fucking war, you wanker. Play your games and let us play mine, dumb teenager

        1. I wouldn’t go around saying dumb teenager, many people on this site are adults …. some in there 40’s ….. I

  4. “For Next Fiscal Year” eh? Well, maybe. I see the drough coming to an end thanks to pikmin, and other games to come including the remake of wind waker. I see it coming, but you better do better next year, the other systems are on the way. There is where the real fight will begin.

  6. Everyone keeps talking about the PS4 and Xbox One and acting like Nintendo better bring out some good games before those consoles come out or else they’re doomed. NINTENDO DOESN’T GIVE A RAT’S PATOOT ABOUT THE COMPETITION! They march to the beat of their own drum. And I like that. Nintendo knows that people will still buy their consoles for the Nintendo exclusives. And many who buys a PS4 and Xbox One will also buy a Wii U as well. Anyone who’s a fan of Nintendo will buy a Wii U (or already has) for the exclusive games.

Besides, who on earth just blindly goes to a store and tries buying a console they know nothing about? I mean, if a person is already a big Nintendo fan, I highly doubt they’re going to buy the PS4 or Xbox One (if they can only afford one console). But that still doesn’t explain what I’m trying to say. What loyal Nintendo fan is going to say “wow! the PS4 or Xbox One looks so much cooler. I’ll buy that instead of the Wii U. Who cares about Mario and Zelda etc.?” Ok, I give up. I just can’t explain my point.

    1. I don’t care how much power or what games the others have, almost nothing released for the Playstation consoles interests me enough to buy a console and nothing interests me in any Xbox…

Some believe we should be mad because Pikmin 3 doesn’t have Online MP or SM3DW and so on, I don’t care…

If High Command never said anything about having online in such games then I have nothing against them…

I buy Nintendo games and consoles because I love Nintendo, end of story…

I don’t feel cheated like the corrupted minds of the western Xbots…

However I am not entirely pleased with how they have handled the wii U so far either…

      1. @Nintendo Commander,
Yeah, I feel the same way. I’ve never cared about online modes in games. It makes no difference with me. Anyone who passes on a game like Pikmin 3 just because it doesn’t have online multi-player etc. is pathetic. I’m also not interested in any of the Playstation or Xbox exclusive games. They’re just not my cup of tea. I’m not sure if it’s because the NES was my first major console, and I just feel loyal to Nintendo because of that. Or if it’s simply because they make the greatest games in the world? All I know is that Nintendo’s consoles are all I’ve ever cared about really.

  7. Nintendo has a point they are starting to finally get it right. with the 3ds it started off rough but quickly caught up. Spotpass made them money so now they wil hit that home run with the Wii U. People forget that Pikmin 3 was originally a Wii game and look how it turned out. Iwata has already stated that they have over 15 games that are unannounced That’s 15 games that we know nothing about that could be on the same level as X

I have been vocal about knocking Nintendo for the choices they made but I just realized this is basically the beginning of HD for them. Now they have a year under their belt. For those who know Nintendo they should know that they get better with their hardware with time. Look at the 3ds they crank out awesome games on that system. Now imagine that amount of time with the Wii U. Look at Pikmin HD, Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta, X and a list of other games I missed. The Wii U will not get 1 game that sells systems they will get multiple games that sells systems. In closing all Nintendo needs to do is keep updating the system, Advertise more, and keep making awesome games and they’ll get that paper.

    1. Well said! Nintendo is a smart company. They killed off Sega by just playing the waiting game and letting them do them self’s in. Same will happen to Sony (Not that I hate Sony they just need to stay in check) Nintendo is getting those amazing games out now and were getting one every month! Can Sony or Microsoft say the same thing? Don’t think so… Next first party game from Sony is Infamous SS and that’s in April of next year when Smash or Mario Kart come out. Microsoft I don’t even consider them a gaming console any more so don’t even consider them a threat there just a bunch of half assed 180 idiots.

So yea Nintendo has my support going foreword! There showing there support for the Wii U. One thing that will help them is to discontinue the original Wii so people wont choose that over the Wii U. Here’s hoping Nintendo’s reign continues and we keep seeing more amazing tittles!

P.S. If anyone want’s to add me as a friend on my Wii U my Wii U Tag is: Dry Bones!

  8. Both South Park and WWE 2K14 are confirmed to Wii U. You really wanna put exclusives, huh? Alright, lets see:

    • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD

    • The Wonderful 101

    • Pikmin 3

    • Mario Kart 8

    • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

    • Super Mario 3D World

    • Bayonetta 2

    • Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

    • Monolith’s ‘X’

    • Super Smash Bros. U

Many 3rd party games are skipping Wii U, yes, but at least be smarter and don’t include exclusives… Nintendo will always win on exclusives.

  9. I believe they can achieve their goal, their games are comin. First of all WiiU proved that no one cares about 3rd party games on Nintendo systems, yes they are nice to have but seriously people waited Nintendo games because the quality is on Nintendo titles. The thing is this the 1st party killers are comin Retros DK etc. The end of this year will be amazing i mean when was the last time when platformin kings DK,Mario and Sonic were released on same year on same system???? Next year will be amazing too. The thing is that 3rd party titles dont sell Nintendo systems, thats my whole point, because of the standard quality of Nintendo titles. 3rd parties dont matter as long as 1st party and brilliant exclusive titles keep on comin. Who the fuck cares about Rayman anymore for example!?? Dk,Mario and Sonic are here for christ sake, the only reason why people cared about Rayman was because people wanted something to play while they were waitin N titles, now that its head on head against platformin kings it doesnt stand a chance.

  10. If Nintendo catches up with online multiplayer and makes a first person shooter for the very lucrative FPS genre and some big open world cinematic games, they will crush everyone. They need to make games that compete with the experience offered by Call of Duty and GTA and Halo and Elder Scrolls Skyrim.

  11. They’ll be fine with all the games coming out this year. Don’t know about 3rd Party support though. All those 3rd party devs that said “We won’t develop for Wii U if there’s no install base.” are already developing something on Xbox One and PS4…

  12. Eventually they will pick back up especially since all the great games for the WiiU are coming out in 2014 onwards. Also hoping that more of those best selling Gems from Japan will come overseas. Heard Fantasy Life (Think Animal Crossing + Run Factory) was trademarked in NA

  13. To get Nintendo like profits you should just make Nintendo like games, not casual bullshit. Stop mentioning the once greatness you had, Nintendo, if you’re not trying to be like that ever again….
