Ubisoft Talks Watch Dogs For Wii U, Explains It’s Closer To Current Gen

watch_dogs

Ubisoft Montreal creative director Jonathan Morin has clarified earlier comments that suggested that Watch Dogs for Wii U will be somewhere in between current and next gen. Morin admitted that the highly anticipated game is closer to current gen, but promises that it’s still a beautiful game on Wii U. Morin also says that they are working extremely hard to optimise the controls for the Wii U GamePad.

“I would say the Wii U version is pretty much in between what the current gen is and what the next gen is from a version standpoint. It’s hard to position it. I would tend to say it’s maybe a bit closer to current gen than next gen for certain things but it’s a beautiful game on Wii U and it’s cool to play it just on the GamePad.”

“On the Wii U you can play on the GamePad screen. There are no new features or anything like that – it’s the same game but we’re optimising the controls for the beast that is the Wii U GamePad.”

    1. This. You are spot on with the time part, sadly not every dev has the time to use Gamepad in creative ways, because business guys usually want multiplats to hit all systems at the same time.

    2. It’s the same problem devs had with the wii. It was different and nobody was trying to use it to the full potential. Hopefully things will change for the U but i’m not gonna hold my breath. Seems like developers don’t really like Nintendo. Shame. Nintendo seems like the only company that’s trying to change how games are played.

    1. Why? Wii U have the GamePad, which gives more value to the overall gameplay, you should be happy because of that, not because of graphics (which are going to be decent in this console.)

      1. I don’t care about graphics…

I’m disappointed that they didn’t do anything special with the Gamepad…

        1. Actually i miss judged you. You are one of those who dont have money for this game and thats why you look reasons to not buy it, so you wont feel left out.

  1. The game that could actually benefit from the pad dosnt add anything. I’m starting to think that the reason the wiiu is lacking features is cuz they are being paid nit to add them.

        1. I have my radio show and my brother, it wouldnt make sense to contract more people at this point, we are doing great on our own right now. Perhaps when our name is bigger, then my mind will consider contracting more. Its ironic that your name is Voice of Reason.

          1. Is not wise to get more people when business is blooming? That’s why their so many suicides cuz of people who think they can do everything by them selves.

            1. “That’s why their so many suicides cuz of people who think they can do everything by them selves.”

Thats a great start, i knew you were gonna expose little bit of yourslef after my post. You really need help quickly. My brother email is here Niles.Shame@Cockmail.com contact him before its too late.

          2. You don’t need a TV show like Tool Time or a Radio Show to help people… Sometimes, all you need is an open mind and compassion for your neighbors.

    1. There’s a difference between a lack of creativity and not forcing in gimmicks for a game not designed around them.

Not every game has to have some creative new use of the gamepad and the notion that it does is part of what’s driving developers from caring about the console.

Sometimes, subtle uses of the GamePad features are the best way to go for the sake of that version of the game.

      1. The thing is, the game IS designed for it…or well, it looks like it, with all the hacking going on with touchscreen phones and stuff like that.
From his wording, we’ll have off tv play and little else. I hope I’m wrong though

        1. No, it ISN’T designed around it. It’s designed mainly for other consoles. If it was designed completely with the Wii U gamepad in mind, it wouldn’t work on the other consoles.

          1. I didn’t imply that Watchdogs was designed for Wii U, sheesh. I said the concept in the gameplay can fit well with what the Gamepad offers…

              1. Not necessarily. The game can be multiplat and still use the Gamepad intuitively if the developers use some creativity

  2. how about they just show a damn video of wii u graphics on one side, and ps4 on the other side, and ps3 on the third side, and we can decide ourselves. i actually pre-ordered this but i hope i won’t regret not getting it on ps4 which im buying on launch day

  3. Apparently someone is not impressed with the fact that gamers could care less that Ubisoft chose to port the 360/PS3 version over to the Wii U and use the power of the Wii U to make it look better. I guess they are foolishly trying to use this as an anchor to bolt down that the Wii U is close to 7th-gen tech.

Of course many of us actually have brains and understand that developers aren’t touching the GPGPU of the Wii U because they don’t have time to make a dedicated version that uses the power reserves is has that would put it’s graphics on-par with the PS4 and XBOX One.

It’s just really sad that grown people act like children.

“I desperately want people to except my believe that the Wii U cannot compete with the PS4 and XBOX One in graphics so not only will I find stories and twist the context to fit my agenda, but after a story has already been posted numerous times I’ll KEEP posting the same story because I’m secretly trying to convince myself of something I know isn’t true and even if it was true nobody cares anyway.”

  4. No big deal the if the game comes with everthing that ps4 and xbox1 have.Wii dont care about the graphics of U ;)

          1. Didn’t say they couldn’t afford to make games, they can’t afford to experiment on a game that may not sell well. New IPs haven’t been doing well the past several years.

  5. “On the Wii U you can play on the GamePad screen. There are no new features or anything like that – it’s the same game but we’re optimising the controls for the beast that is the Wii U GamePad.”

That reads beautifully, I had to quote it.

  6. This is exactly what I said the last time the developer said exactly the same thing but the babies can’t understand that.

This Wii U is an underpowered baby console with 7 year old hardware. It the Wii all over again, other consoles will get triple A games and the Wii U will continue to get nothing, I mean it will but Nintendo’s baby games. Obviously the babies are happy with that. Once developers start focusing on the next gen systems, if they oddly do decide to make a Wii U version of their game it will be a dumbed down version so it can run on the underpowered Wii U console. The babies can’t understand that even though we had exactly the same situation with the Wii, the Wii would miss out on all the triple A games, and if ocassionaly it did get one of those triple A games it was a dumbed down mediocre version of what the game was on the current gen systems.

  7. They’re not shoving unnecessary GamePad gimmicks onto a game that isn’t designed around them. Good. I don’t want that shit bogging this version down. Sometimes, subtlety is the best method.

The notion that you have to be ‘creative’ or ‘innovative’ or ‘new’ with the GamePad is one of the reasons devs are hesitant to support the console in the first place. Good to know that Ubisoft understand that not every Wii U game has to be different from other console games.

  10. Hey guys, you left out the part where they said it’s not developed in Montreal but in Bucharest (guys who made ZombiU, worth noting).

While I liked ZombiU that game did not push the Wii U’s graphical capabilities. Ubisoft bitches a lot about how their games sell on the Wii U but they insist on offloading the Wii U builds to their tier-2 studios.

  11. I have a feeling that this game is being ported from the Xbox 360 version with little optimization. So it won’t look like a next-gen game.
