We already know that investors are demanding Nintendo to jump onboard the smartphone and tablet bandwagon, but Reggie says that the company is currently thinking about how to leverage popular mobile platforms for marketing purposes. Reggie explained that Nintendo is mainly considering how they can give tablet and smartphone users little experiences which then drive them back to the Nintendo 3DS or Wii U.
“We’re constantly thinking about how to leverage mobile as a marketing vehicle. How do I give little tastes of content, little experiences that then drive the consumer back to my hardware environment?”
“That’s why we’re so focused on having content exclusive to our platform,” he said. “When the consumer wants to play Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, they have to purchase our hardware to do so. And that preserves our overall financial model.”

Gotta have that Nintendo hardware.
I think they should port like one dungeon in zelda or a world in Mario or something onto smartphones and tablets and that wil give people wanting more, and they will be forced to buy the rest by buying a wii u and 3ds, and those games will cost like 5$ on the smartphone and tablet.
That’s an interesting idea. Seems like too much of a hassle, though. It would also be the ultimate tease!
They would probably just end up playing the level over and over again on the Smartphone.
Limit the demo like the 3ds demo, that’s how you reel them in. Fives demos, and if they like it they should buy it. I don’t think they should use smartphones though. They just don’t seem game ready. and I mean real games, not Temple Run.
Didn’t these sellouts bad mouth mobile gaming? What are they doing advertising their name on the thing supposedly ruining the gaming industry?
Or theyll be forced to pirate it, LOL.
*m
They’d better keep their stuff on their systems if they want to survive the comming PS4 and XBone!
You meant to say Xbox 720 to 900P.’cause the X1 is releasing a lot of next generation 900P/720P-30fps games.
Yeah, but a lot of people don’t know that, and they seem to think that the Wii U isn’t Next-Gen simply because the Wii had 6th-Gen power.
Isn’t that the case with all new sytems? Developers first have a hard time working with them, especially before they’ve even been released & they have very limited detail on what kind of platform it is they’re making games for.
It’s only until later that you start seeing games pushing the boundaries more.

And even like that Pikmin 3 & Mario U developed by Nintendo ead were 720p. At this point even my Virtual Boy’s being played more than my Wii U, SMH. The only game I enjoy so far’s Pikmin 3 which wasn’t even a launch title.
People used to carry the original gameboy in there pockets. Idk whats so difficult to carry a 3ds to play pokemon
I’m one of many at my school who have now started carrying 3DSes to school. I just had a Pokemon battle after finishing a history test against a classmate XD
I won lol.
Idk whats so difficult to carry a 2ds to play pokemon
Yeah! I always clipped it onto my belt.
#KeepinItReal #YOLO #WIIU #REGGIETASTIC
#mybodyisreadybutmymobileisnt
in my school everyone plays pokemon… on their mobile. they download a emulator plus pokemon silver and can play the full game without ever buying something from nintendo
Pirates do not deserve your respect.
Battle them once they’ve got the real thing but otherwise ignore them.
I know lots of people who does that. But I also know surprisingly many who owns/wants to buy a 3DS for Pokémon etc.. And also, surprisingly many tolerates you for playing 3DS, and doesn’t call you “childish”.
That is a crime.
Stop “thinking” about how to market Nintendo better and start “doing” it. I will give them credit for taking strides in the right direction though.
Pretty much this. This guys always talk and talk and talk.
That’s basically his job. He is essentially the face of NoA.
That is “part” of his job. As COO he pretty much runs Nintendo Of America but all decisions are made final by Iwata who he now reports……….
*drum roll to rim shot*
***DIRECTLY*** to. :)
Get rid of Iwata!!!
I agree, but Iwata isn’t going anywhere unless there is a catastrophe of some sort. Hiroshi Yamauchi’s grandfather basically started the company and it has been passed down. I believe Iwata was his son-in-law which is why the company was passed to him.
Why? The DS was a huge succes, the Wii was a hughe succes, the 3DS is becomming a huge succes and you want to fire the guy because the Wii U isn’t a instant hit in the first 10 months?
Het your shit together, the guy had proven he’s capabele of leading Nintendo to the top. If there are people that should be fired it’s the PlayStation team because they lost all the money they made with the PlayStation 2 thanks tot the PlayStation 3.
The Wii was garbage regardless of sales, they hardly had any game worth owning & their main focus was attracting ca$ual$. The decision to add 3D to their next line of DSs was a highly stupid & costly one that they ended up regreting & now cutting out.
The Wii had allot of great games worth owning, adding 3D to the DS was a smart move but 3D didn’t went as big as many people thought it would go. They are only cutting the 3D from the 2DS to attract a bigger crowd of people that aren’t interested in the 3d or are afraid that it’s bad for their eyes.
Please, anyone with half a brain knows the 2DS was made for their own benefit$.
Not experimenting on new IPs during the Wii’s success was a stupid decision. Naming their “next gen” console Wii U was a stupid decision on top of making it appear so similar to the Wii&then not expecting the ca$ual gamers they attracted to get confused.
No new IP’s?
Wii sports, Wii play, Wii Party, the artstyle… Series, all new ip’s if I’m correct.
Agreed with the name but no reason to fire him, they added a i to the Ds name and nobody was confused, and that console was basically a Ds with two cameras…
[Sorry for the late response. I Forgot I even commented on this article.]
Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Party, Wii Music: all garbage mini games created to lure in ca$ual$. Iwata himself admitted that was Wii’s biggest flaw.
“The Wii was able to reach a large number of new consumers who never played games before by bringing hands-on experiences with its Wii Sports & Wii Fit. However we couldn’t adequately create the situation that such new consumers played games frequently or
for long, consistent periods. As a result, we could’nt sustain a good level of profit.”
*couldn’t
And I’m pretty sure if that “new IP” Miyamoto’s supposedly creating for the Wii U turns out to be yet another Mii induced mini game garbage, many hardcore fans actually still buying their systems will be pissed off.
Ignoring those who told them Wii U seemed more like an upgrade after their E3 presentation in Japan was a stupid decision. An expensive to manufacture gamepad was a stupid decision. And as the head of Nintendo, Iwata doesn’t even care to compete.
I agree with the first presentation, it was confusing and they should have showed the console itself more.
Apple’s iPad’s are hard to manufacture, Apple’s iPhone’s are hard to manufacture, Apple’s macbooks are hard to manufacture. You would have fired Steve Jobs? No you wouldn’t. That’s a crappy argument.
Apples’re hard to manufacture, yet they come out w/ a new one every year. Meanwhile it takes Nintendo every 5 years to build a new gen console&they can’t even get that right. Why should they fire Steve Jobs when he even made Miyamoto shake in his boots.
Iwata’s the same person who said he didn’t think mobile devices were a threat. Fast foward to 2013: *Miiverse now available on smartphones*. The only good thing about him’s that unlike the rest of the crew, he seldom points fingers for his failures.
Times change you know, I don’t think Asus thought the iPad was going to slow down laptop sales but it did and now they are embracing tablets by making them themselfs.
Same with Nintendo, they didn’t expect it but they were wrong and they get over and embrace it.
At least iPad was created with efficiency in mind. When “next gen” Wii U was selling at $300 8GB/$350 32GB, a last gen PS3 with 160GB hard drive was selling at $250 &could do more.
And they wonder why no one bothered with their under powered system when even the games they had to offer then & even now are more garbage than anything. Nintendo’s big ego doesn’t allow them think ahead of its competitors.
They expected the stationary iPad gimmick controller to be the one selling the system like the Wii & failed.
While smart phones and tablets are something Nintendo need to keep in mind when making software/hardware, they really shold start worrying about the home console war.
Nintendo doesn’t need to worry about the home console war. They just need to advertise the Wii U so that people actually know the thing is on store shelves and that it is not a attachment to the Wii.
Besides advertising the Wii U as something completely different from Wii, what they really need are more games exclusive for it. Apperantly they thought just waving a stationary iPad would be enough to lure in the masses of ca$uals.
All they have are exclusive games on it because they have little to no 3rd party support. The casuals don’t know about the GamePad because they don’t know about the system. I don’t think it was a good idea anyway, but the GamePad is still a huge unknown to the general public.
Not all their titles are exclusives & some are ports. Wii U titles so far are uninteresting or butchered versions not enough to capture the attention of those who are aware of differences & plan on buying a system.
For intents and purposes there is nothing on the Wii U worth playing save for the exclusives because as you said, the ports are butchered to death and uninteresting and no one is buying them. So essentially the only sale Nintendo is getting software wise is from exclusives.
Just read a report to today about for Nintendo only accounts for 3% of EA’s totally software revenue. Granted they have a Code Red against Nintendo and aren’t porting anything to the console(that being said 3% isn’t too bad) but I can’t imagine the software revenue from other companies being much more than that.
Except maybe Activision because COD games have always done well on Nintendo consoles which is why the Wii U has BLOPS2 and will continue to get COD games. And then Skylanders as well being a big seller on Nintendo platforms.
They also really dropped the ball when deciding to name their new system Wii U in conjunction to making it look so similar to the previous Wii. I’m not surprised most people thought the gamepad was just an accessory that could function on the Wii too.
The should have called it the ‘Nintendo Stream’. The one feature that stands out about the Wii U that everyone universally agrees is a cool feature is the ability to stream the games to the GamePad. By that name alone people can easily figure out what the best feature of the console is and make a decision to purchase one. Plus, there would be no confusion with that system and the Wii.
I really wish I could take over marketing for Nintendo.
Both. The advertising for the Wii U has really sucked, and here in Norway, I haven’t seen a single add (though, I don’t watch much TV, so I haven’t seen any for PS4/Xbone)! Like I said in another article, Nintendo needs to advertise not just their consoles, but their name. They need to be like they were in the NES/SNES era, where everyone knew about them, and every kid, family and hardcore gamer WANTED to play on their systems!
In those days developing games was easier & cheaper than now that they require more work, so more risk could be taken &they had games both left & right. Miyamoto was also at his best during those times and kept bringing new creative experiences.
They are obviously waiting for Christmas etc, I don’t think there are much parents buying expensive presants now. I think they are waiting and then give everything in the month before Christmas to get people talking and kids begging for the console.
yeah, or you can make loads and loads of money from smartphones and tablets. might as well take advantage of the craze.
When a Pokémon MMO comes out , it’ll be on EVERYTHING. DS , 3DS , Wii , Wii U , PSP and PS3/4 , Xbox 360 and 1.
On next gen , current gen , and last gen.
When it does officially come out I assume it’ll only be on a Nintendo product with cross-gameplay between the handheld and console systems at the time of release.
If it comes out , all wars will end , starvation will stop , the world will be a t Nirvana.
I wonder what makes people like pokémon so much
Look at my site. Pokémon X and Y – *Come with me , and you’ll see , in a world of your imagination*
They do need to market a lot more. Wii U needs to succeed!
Exactly, Wii U needs to gain back the ca$ual audience!!!
Maybe they should make a companion app for specific games. Like in Zelda, for example, they can release a mobile/tablet app that’ll allow you to play mini-games to collect extra rupees or exclusive content that’ll carry over to the Wii U Zelda game. As well a game map, info on items, and characters. Just some ideas.
Decent ideas!!
I’d hate to be charged money now to unlock a map.
You shouldn’t, I was going more along the lines of having a map you can reference on your smartphone/tablet and the app being a free companion app, but then again I’m just speculating some ideas that I think they can do without giving out too much of a game that they can just replay to get a Mario, Zelda, or “Insert Nintendo IP of choice” fix.
Maps should already be in the game.. But i do agree with the company app, but then i think more of Nintendo direct notifications, Miiverse, nuying from eShop without the console and Nintendo chat, which allows you to video chat with Wii U, 3DS, smartphone.

Nintendo software will feel clunky on a tablet or phone. People will be like, “This is shit” and won’t give it a chance on the hardware that makes for the experience.
No ports. Advertising, trailers. MAYBE some HTML5 interactive stuff… But no game ports. Nintendo is right about this particular topic.
I never get the idiots that say Nintendo is the company that should go to the mobile market… Nintendo actually sells systems and games for them, Sony sells nothing, why should they deserve even the smallest bit of existence over Nintendo?
