Ubisoft: Watch Dogs Wii U Was Delayed ‘So Teams Resources Were Put Towards Broadest Possible Benefit’

Earlier today Ubisoft announced that the long-awaited Wii U version of Watch Dogs has been delayed. The Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC are still on track for release sometime between April and June 2014. Ubisoft says it delayed the Wii U version to focus the teams resources where they could have the biggest possible benefits for the company and for the consumer.

“We made the difficult decision to further delay the release of Watch Dogs on Wii U to focus the team’s resources where they could have the broadest possible benefit for both our customers and Ubisoft”.

      1. As much as I’m a Nintendo fanboy, sadly that’s true and what Ubisoft is doing is feir they have to look at ther benefit first, this is business. Is Nintendo who has to make the Wii U sale so this doesn’t happen or worse, to prevent future Ubisoft games to skip the Wii U

          1. That’s true. By releasing it last on this system, it’s going to get even fewer sales. Which is sad, because I kind of had more hope for sales on this 3rd party game than other 3rd party games.
But this does follow the trend of whatever games I pre-order get delayed. I have now pre-ordered two games in my whole life, and both of them were delayed…twice. Both games were delayed twice. Lovely.

            1. I had high hopes for it to be one of the best selling 3rd party Wii U games of 2012, 2013, & 2014 myself! Now that hope is smashed to smitherins! *sigh*

      1. No. It means that they don’t really care about the Wii U version anyway so in order to make sure it comes out on time on the Sony and Microsoft consoles they are putting the Wii U version on the backburner.

The Rayman Legends debacle proved all that needed to be proven as to how “important” they feel Nintendo is to their business model. They flushed guaranteed money down the toilet just to try and get money out of the other platforms and wound up losing their ass all around.

Good job Ubisoft. Keep up to good work.

        o_O

        1. Well, I can’t really excuse Rayman Legends, but there may have been behind the scenes drama. As for this one, this gives the other two consoles a head start so that they can sell more consoles and overpower the Wii U. I feel bad for Nintendo, but they’ve got money to burn so it’s a little more all right if they come out last. Best for last and all right? Plus, the gamepad may have extra features. That being said, the Wii U really needs a good fighting game….like Smash Bros!

          1. Instead of burning it they need to start spending it. The rich all to often because too attached to their money. They enjoy the feeling of being rich more than actually using it to enrich experiences for others. The amount on money Nintendo has in the bank is absurd, yet there it sits……….

They have so much money they could buy enough companies to be totally self sustaining and in the process make even MORE money. We’ll have to wait and see if Iwata can get it though his thick skull.

            1. In Nintendo’s case, and possibly the case of others saving up money, has always been in case of emergency or a rainy day. Some people, if not most, end up poor for the simple fact they DIDN’T save up money when they had the chance in case of a shitstorm.

              1. Well Iwata said that Yamauchi taught him to make as much ‘profit’ as possible for that reason. However how much is too much? Nintendo has enough money to not make another dime and LOSE 250 million a year for 30 years and not go bankrupt. I think they might be just a little bit well off.

My thing is that in order to make money you have to spend money. Their marketing has gotten better, but still is nowhere close to where it needs to be. It’s not even so much that they need to spend more money, but spend it more wisely. The money they wasted on development of the Vitality Sensor and what they are going to spend on this “Quality Of Life” business could be better spent on purchasing a dormant IP from a 3rd party….

*cough Mega Man…….cough Mystical Ninja…cough…….Little Nemo: Dream Master..cough-cough*

Nobody can tell me those three franchises in next-gen graphics wouldn’t sell like hotcakes and push Wii U console sales through the roof.

Or a revamped online system, or revamped marketing campaign. You know?

                1. Agreed. I enjoyed Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for N64 and I’d buy it on virtual console in a heartbeat. (The other Mystical Ninja they got from SNES doesn’t interest me.)

                  1. Yes. I wouldn’t mind seeing a remastered 3D-version of Mystical Ninja64 on the 3DS and a brand new one on the Wii U.

Kids these days don’t know what they missed out on. That game was classic. No matter how many times I play it start to finish it is always as fun as the first. That is missing from today’s games. Even some Nintendo games lack the replay value truth be told.

Like right now I’m about to finish Super Mario 3D World but I didn’t find it as enjoyable as Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario 64. Maybe I’m just getting too old. I am 36. :) Although I am having a blast playing Wonderful 101. Boy is that game slept on. Same ‘type’ of fun as playing games like Mystical Ninja come to think of it. Just good, silly fun with a game that doesn’t take itself seriously. That was the charm in MN64 and in W:101.

                    1. I’d love that. I’d definitely buy that on 3DS with a 3D remastering just like I did with Ocarina of Time. (Star Fox is no Zelda so I skipped the 3D version of SF64… Now if Nintendo just gave the multiplayer online…)

          2. even the developers themselves were up in arms about the rayman legends delay.. rayman legends was essentially done

it was a business decision made by the publishing side of ubisoft, not a delay caused by the developing side… pure and simple

and to be honest i’ve stopped believing that the wii u will feature any functionality that will utilize the gamepad beyond the usual minimap and maybe an inventory screen.. anything that doesn’t take the development team long to implement

i think ubisoft have made it clear by now that the wii u isn’t at all important to them

      2. Graphicly they already said would be between generations (better then 360, but not as good as X1)
but if you think about it, its probably the most unique version, I think their skipping support for smartglass, and minimal support for Kinect. And I don’t think Sony is getting any special treatment either, so the game pad would require a lot of extra work.
its nit like ubisoft to ditch customers (they are Canadian)
I think this well still be a product but it well take the most work to make given the game pad support

        1. ubisoft is french not canadian

and they managed to “ditch” their customers many times before what with oppressive DRM schemes and whatnot

rayman legends should also make that list i believe

    1. Give them a break, If you led a company your main focus would be profit. I promise you the Watchdogs sales on Wii U will be less than all other versions. Let’s just be happy that we are actually getting the game :D

      1. Yeah but in my case for example, I own a PlayStation 4 and Wii U, i’d much rather choose the Wii U as I prefer growing its library and with a game like Watch_Dogs the gamepad can be an insanely cool tool. But if I know it’s going to be shoddily ported, i’m just going to go for the majorly better PS4 version as much as it disheartens me. Equal effort needs to be applied showing each consoles strengths.

        1. i know what you mean. The only thing that will make me buy the Wii U version, is the gamepad. The Ps4 version will be my choice.

          1. If I had the PS4 & knew the Wii U port was going to be the worst one, I’d go for the PS4 port, too, as much as I’d hate to do it. But if Wii U gets screwed out of Watch_Dogs altogether, fuck every system it’s on regardless of how good it is. Square Enix & Rockstar with FF, KH, & GTA get a pass in this regard because they haven’t said those games are coming to Wii U in the first place, unlike Ubisoft who’ve said it is coming to Wii U.

          2. I seriously don’t care if the game will use the gamepad or not. Now the only thing that keeps my interest in the game is the Wii U version not being gimped, recieveing the DLCs and having a full functional online mode, these three things are miles more important than using the gamepad. I prefer to believe Ubisoft is making an effot to assure that all the five versions will recieve equal treatment.

              1. Come on! Assuring this game is not going to be gimped in anyway is MILES more important than any optional feature. And actually, I prefer seeing the game not using the gamepad in some sensationalist way than using as an excuse for gimping the game. The producers of Sniper Elite thought Nintendo consumers wouldn’t care about all the missing content since the game makes some use of the gamepad.

      2. “I promise you the Watchdogs sales on Wii U will be less than all other versions”

oh yes they will be.. and one of the reasons for that you can read above

        1. unfortunately in a big corporation it wouldn’t be about what you want anymore it would be what’s best for the company and that’s usually more and more profit
many companies manage that without pissing off their customers on a yearly basis however

    2. You are SO wrong. This proves that they do care that atch Dogs is good on Wii U. They are taking the time to complete it afterall! They could have said, well we pulled resources from the Wii U version and left it as is…. Please understand…. BUT THEY DIDN’T!

  1. UBISOFT. STOP ANNOUNCING MOVIES AND 6 OPEN WORLD NEXT GEN GAMES AND THEN SAYING THEY COME OUT A YEAR LATER WHEN THEY NEED 2-3 YEARS OF WORK BY 600 PEOPLE. STRETCHING YA SELF TOO THIN. WE JUST GO AC4. THAT TOOK PEOPLE> HOW DARE YOU TAKE PEOPLE OFF WIIU VERSION TO WORK ON SHITTY LAST GEN VERSION?

  2. I hope it’s not cancelled. Ubisoft SAID they’d support Wii U and if they cancel this, even if they release all their other games, they’d be abandoning the Wii U.

  3. Total bullshit. Delay them all until wiiu one is ready like u did for other systems on rayman. And dont bitch about sales on wiiu because people who own multiple systems arent going to wait for wiiu version. You developers keep making wiiu get the lowest sales.

    1. Like I said, Ubisoft is slowing showing it’s true colors. Just a matter of time before we possibly get no game from them, not without them being majorly gimped and/or broken anyway.

  4. I knew it was being delayed because they pulled people from the team and for no other reason. I wonder what they actually put them to work doing. My guess is working on the PS4 Xbone versions. How sad that is.

    1. They obviously pulled workers off the Wii U version to finish the One and PS4 version of the game, but to be fair, Wii U isn’t exactly hot stuff right now so Ubisoft made the right decision if you put your Nintendo fanboyism on hold.

I’m just glad that they are taking the time to actually complete the Wii U version later and not giving us an incomplete version.

          1. It seems like nobody does at this point. I will probably follow the news for it this year and if it doesn’t get any better, I’m not even gonna follow news anymore.

            1. But it will get better, Nintendo wouldn’t give a shit if the PS4 was a god. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash bros are unstoppable. I made this profile for trolling… damnit

                  1. Yeah if you read my other comment I said I didn’t see his comment, lol. I’m lagging or something. But I hope those do fix the Wii U, I’m ready to start seeing good news on here rather than bad!

    1. Great…just fuking great! I swear up and down this fucking road if nintendo host’s another Direct showing off some stupid game like “mii checkers!” im gonna go ape sh*t! I was looking forward to this game…

    2. The politically correct way of saying that all the other versions of the game will be more important sales wise than the Wii U. They’re not wrong, but they are basically screwing over the Wii U installment. Due to the delay, it will definitely lose sales. This is not surprising to anyone.

        1. if they were smart, i would do it the other way around
          This way
High sales on other consoles, low on WiiU
if they release it sooner on WiiU:
More sells on WiiU due to the fast release
          High sells on others

that way, the profit is better

    3. Guys, I am the only one worry that this game gets released around Monolith’s X and Smash bros Wii U/3DS? Which correct me If I am wrong, two of the biggest tittles for Nintendo Wii U This Year?

but seriously, if they really intend the best for our version, so be it. Watch_Dogs for Wii U was announced a little later that the PS3/PS4 and Xbox360/Xbox One version.

    4. heres the sales before u bring out more bad news like me.

      there fixed

    6. Wii U version will be cancelled. It hardly matters – the game will be rubbish and wouldn’t have sold well on Wii U. It also wouldn’t have helped to shift a single Wii U.

    7. Why are people being stupid asses? Ubisoft is delaying the Wii U version, because they clearly focused on the Xbox One and PS4 versions up to this point (how can you blame then when Wii U sells like shit) and instead of just releasing the Wii Uversion in it’s uncomplete form, they are delaying the release to finish the game for us.

I would say that is pretty generous of Ubisoft. Can’t wait for Watch Dogs, it’s unfortunate the game won’t be released on time, but I would rather have a completed version than a watered down version.

    8. Pingback: Ubisoft confirma retraso de lanzamiento para versión de Wii U de Watch Dogs | NintenDominante

      1. Let’s not forget that delaying Rayman Legends and releasing it weeks before on PS3 and 360 was only a ruse to justify Ubisoft cutting their ties to Nintendo by saying their games don’t sell well on Nintendo consoles, the only reason it didn’t work is because the game didn’t sell well on any console, 360 and PS3 have no market for platformers.
Now this is something they know is foolproof, whoever wants this game and owns a Wii U and either a PS3 or 360 isn’t going to wait even if they wanted the Wii U versio; they’re gonna get it whenever it releases for whichever console it releases, and since PS3/4 and 360/XBONE do have a market for this kind of games, this will be their trump card.
Mark my words people, they’ve tried this thrice now.

      1. And by you not buying the game, Ubisoft will not make ANY games for the Wii U, not even delayed games or incomplete games. We’ll get nothing at all.

and SOMETHING is better than nothing, right!?

        1. You expect us to praise Ubisoft after what they are doing to us Nintendo Fans, huh? I can understand Ubisoft’s reasons but putting Sony and and Microsoft first than Wii U Owners shows the lack of respect they have for us. They even did that with Rayman Legends. One of the reason Rayman Legends failed miserable in sales is because Ubisoft pissed off a lot of people, including me who did not purchase the game at the time.

I’m still willing to buy Watch_Dogs since they hadn’t made a stupid decision this time. I still have hope for Ubisoft but in not fucking way I am Skipping Bayonetta 2, Monolith’s X or Smash Bros 4 for their game.

        2. Something is better than nothing? Don’t some women with abusive boyfriends say that? Don’t people that would rather have bad attention say “some kind of attention is better than none?” Keep believing that, bub. Anyway, if Ubisoft really cared, they’d delay the other versions when they finish them, finish up the Wii U port, then release them all at once like they did Rayman Legends. But they won’t. They’re doing it in the hopes it sells badly on Wii U, so they can finally have an excuse to drop support for Wii U. I bet that was their hope when they did delay Rayman Legends but that failed since it sold badly on all systems with the Wii U version selling the best. But by all means. Keep thinking something is better than nothing while you get beat senseless like an idiot. And if they cancel Watch_Dogs altogether, screw that game no matter what other console I can get it on & screw Ubisoft. There are better companies I can spend my money on than someone who screws us over with glitchy games & needless delays.

    9. To me this is just them saying that they delayed the Wii U version to focus more on the other versions. I was never going to buy it anyway, but this is bad news. Who knows when it’ll come out, it might come out by the time all those games Gamerluce said might be out. By then it’ll be too late, I mean if Smash Bros and Watch Dogs come out around the same time, which game do you think they will buy? I mean I’m all up for them delaying it to polish the game but it didn’t say anything like that on the article.

    10. As long as we still get the game I will be happy. They better not cancel this game but I have a feeling they are trying to cancel the Wii U version…..

    11. I care nothing about Watch Dogs, but I’m getting fed up with every company either ignoring, cancelling or delaying the Wii U versions of games. It’s getting tiresome. Especially since I just bought a Wii U, and I’m just NOW getting to know it and like it.

    12. I would like to think there will be an employee of Ubisoft reading the comments on this blog. If that the case then I would say to him/her that delaying Rayman legends to accommodate microsoft did not bring more revenue. I do believe the Wii U version was the most popular version despite the fact fans were really piss off about the delay. If we take the number for zombie U, it seems the game was rubbish. As for Assassin’s creed 3 and 4 they were dodgy port everybody did not want to buy. I work with Canadian and I found the same arrogance hence why the PR disaster. If Ubisoft delay the Wii U version they better include extra otherwise it will result in low sale.Just to conlcude: “Il ne faut pas prendre les consommateurs pour des cons non plus.”

    13. Wii U is mainly for kids and Kids do not play Watchdog type games.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 have a total user base of 165 Million, also the PS4 and One are selling like hot cakes and are for the mature gamer.
The Wii U has sold like crap for 14 months, Ubisoft should just stop saying that they are making Wii U games as EVERY time they just delay it or cancel it.
Would be better is they just stopped talking crap saying their games are coming to Wii U and then piss off Nintendo fans when they delay it or even scrap it!!
It is ALL Nintendo’s fault, they are the ones who had a year head start on the next gen and did nothing with Zero marketing.
Took them 8 months to put out their first advert, thinking from launch word of mouth would sell it.
Nintendo do not even know what to do with the Gamepad and then you wonder why hardly any 3rd party will even try?

    15. Why don’t they delay the ps3/4 and Xbox 360/one versions then? A extra month won’t mean a thing after half a year of delaying. They had lesser problems with delaying a finished game, remember…

      1. Why? Because they are obviously trying to undermine the sales of their own game so they can claim it didn’t sell well & drop Wii U support. We saw EA do it with Mass Effect when they released the trilogy on other systems for the same price as the Wii U’s port of Mass Effect 3. If not for the developers of Most Wanted U putting their foot down, we most likely never would have seen that game on Wii U at all.

    16. This desin is incredible! Yoou moset certainly know
how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos,
I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job.
Ireally loved what you had to say, and more than that,
how you presented it. Too cool!
