Wii Fit U Sold Under 20K In U.S. During January?

Internet sleuths over at NeoGAF have deduced that Wii Fit U sold under 20,000 units in the US during January. Nintendo declined to give any figures regarding the game during last week’s NPD figures. The retail release of Wii Fit U launched in the US on January 10th.

      1. Same here, there’s plenty of American Nintendo gamers. Why do you hate Microsoft? What did they do to you? Let me guess! No free online and few good 1st parties :P

        1. That’s a lot of the reason! Plus they don’t share the same passion for gaming as Nintendo and Sony. I also can’t afford all three systems per generation.

    1. Those numbers are actually quite terrible, but I suppose anything can be made to look good when you lower the expectations for it.

      1. the game came out months ago on the eshop. these are just sells number from the physical copy, most people already try it and bought it online.

    2. My problem with wiiFit is that it isn’t challenging. It’s made for people who don’t really exercise so it’s not useful for everybody. Have an option to for strenuous challenges and I’ll buy it. Get rid of yoga and dancing and spend that development time on tougher exercise challenges.

      1. False. Few people can hold a 90 sec plank, and your dismissing the benefits of yoga is just sad.

We live in an unfit, ignorant society. It’s true, I get my cardio from my elliptical, and I use my free weights for biceps and such, but Wii fitU is a good training tool, and Nintendo gave it away to those willing to download it early. (if you purchased a $20 pedometer)

        1. Yoga is hard as shit lol. Good for flexibility though. Man I need to get back to the gym. I miss doing them dead lifts… jk.

    3. Personally I went out of my way to buy a balance board and a fit meter. They should have called it “free to play” and then you can pitches new exercises and games, and then they can basicly make new content twice a year for the life of the system. Would have bin a good idea.
but still those numbers are still pretty big.

    4. ~”Wii Fit sold over a quarter of a million copies in its first week” … don’t be stupid … oh god, please don’t be stupid

    5. 20k units in a country as big as the US is BAD news, especially if you compare it to the original Wii Fit’s sales figures. Nintendo even pushed the game forward to launch it in January, in order to gain highest possible costumer attraction due to people’s wishes of weightloss after the new year, and that seems to have had no effect what so ever.
Damn, 20k… Didn’t ever expect a first party Nintendo game to sell that little. They’re almost during worse than Tearaway on psvita.

  2. i have wii fit u since day one and i have to say its pretty good and worth the money but Americans are lazy and rather play cod and eat doritos all day lol sooo yea explains the sales….

    1. Americans aren’t lazy? Clearly you haven’t read any of the articles saying that Americans work harder than any other person on Earth and it is a real problem. Americans are working “too” hard. People skip breakfast, working longer than what they are supposed to. Only 30% of our entire population has passports as most people are not interested in travelling to other countries, because no one cares to go on vacation.

There was a study that says there is a substantial amount of people who would rather cut down their vacation time in order to get more time in the office. Compared to other countries this is preposterous.

Also, you are expected to go straight to college after you are finished High School. If you wait a year it causes suspicion for whatever company it is you go to work for. I hear it is actually customary to TAKE a year off in other countries…. that is simply unheard of in the U.S unless you are dumb.

So Americans do work extremely hard. They just don’t find the time to “work out” or “eat right.” People work, work, work to move up in society and then come home at 1 am to make a quick microwave dinner, eat a bag of chips and down a bottle of beer before going to sleep. Then the next morning it’s the same thing until next thing you know… your fat.

Also, I might add that Americans lead some of the most stressful lives on Earth compared to other countries (barring places like Iraq and Afghanistan, etc where stress levels are through the roof and people have no access to substantial amounts of food) and it is widely known that stress contributes to weight gain.

We get no “afternoon tea,” or “nap time” like some European countries get, we get “work or get fired.”

Also, to prove the stress level to weight gain. Look at Mexico (a more stressful country to live in than the U.S) it has surpassed us in being the fattest country on Earth.

          1. Not getting paid enough. Not spending enough time to raise kids. Kids raise themselves. Family is tight but not tight because of work. There is a problem with that and dont act like there isnt.

          1. I am American & I work my ass off! My job currently has me working 6am to 6pm 7 days a week (I make car parts for Jeep, VW, BMW, & Porsche). I havent had a day off since new years!

            1. I don’t understand. I was talking about being out of shape. I didn’t say anything about cars and job status.
              you confused me.

              1. You agreed to a comment that said, and I quote “not all americans are LAZY and FAT” then you proceeded to add “not all, but most.”

Any sensible person would read that as if you had just called “most” americans lazy AND fat.

Rephrase what you write and you wont get long winded messages.

      1. Very true. I also read this study one time that stated that Americans and Japanese are almost identical in amount of hours worked. They also did this thing where they compared the average amount of hours of sleep people in different countries received. American and Japanese averaged about 5-6 hours of sleep a night while the rest of the world averaged 7 or above. America is also the only developed country that isn’t required to give vacation time to workers.
(Not accusing the rest of the world of being lazy…was just something interesting I read in a Science magazine about sleep once.)

So I guess really the difference between Japanese and American weight is that they have a lot more healthy options that you can get quickly than those of us in the United States have. Quick food for Americans is fast food unfortunately.

But I agree with your long winded statement, pinkcrystal.
Kinda tired of people who aren’t American constantly claiming everyone here is fat and lazy.

      2. Most articles I’ve read said otherwise. Mexico is one of the hardest working countries. USA bairly scrapes in the top 10.

      3. >Americans live some of the most stressful lives on Earth

Yeah, Every 3rd world country as well countries you have invaded for bullshit reasons are telling you to fuck off right now

        1. Yeah because we as Americans all have meetings where we all agree unanimous which country to invaded for bullshit reasons.

Idiot, get your head out of you’re ass, we dont all agree with all the bullshit our government does. That doesnt make life any less stressful when our government opts to make stupid decisionsn

          1. The fact you think your life is stressful is so fucking funny. This is why America is so fucking hated. 3rd world countries are facing civil war, famine, death surrounds them, BUT OH NO, I WORK TO HOLD UP MY LIFESTYLE. OH WOE IS ME. Fucking Americans.

            1. You do realize ( and feel free to check) that the US (which is only part of the same America that includes Canada, Mexico, exe)
gives more then any other country in foreign aid, or in % of donated money by taxes. So let me point out that you seem to mistake hard work for poverty. Finaly Mexico (go loom it up) has larger people then the US

        1. No, you have to have that. I had a feeling I would need it later on so I have kept mine all these years.

It’s unfortunate for anyone who got rid of theirs :/

    1. The only way for Nintendo to realize this is when sales of these software decline and then they start to think that this strategy isn’t working.

I’ve actually lost most of my interest that I had in Nintendo in the last couple of years. Re-used concepts (3D World, NSMB), repeating casual titles like Wii Party and Wii Fit and simply not giving me what I’m craving for.

      1. I don’t agree with the re used concepts criticism. Most game franchises have to do re use concepts that are successful, no one wants to play a Mario game that doesn’t play like a Mario game. The problem with Mario is that it’s become a little too over saturated, we’ve gotten so many Mario games in the past few years that it’s gotten stale. But the formulas work, I personally loved 3D World.

  3. I’m mighty worried that Nintendo is banking on fitness and health software/hardware for their future. We’ll see at E3 in June just how badly they’ve messed up.

  4. Well obviously, Wii Fit U is always a game that’s gonna sell low, it sucks. Nintendo needs to stop making stuff like this, and actually get on track with the Wii U for once…

    1. First, it’s a brand new game and Second, Wii Fit was never meant to replace going to the gym, it was meant to supplement your daily fitness.

        1. Ah… You didn’t play it… Also, it’s $20 if you bought the pedometer. $20. It was well worth it for me. If you don’t like it, fine, it’s cool we don’t like the same stuff, but stop judging games like your word is the only authority.

        2. It has a plethora of brand new minigames to play. Some even include the Wii balance board as well as the gamepad together at once. < That is a feature that really shows off what the Wii U can do in my honest opinion. The minigame where you are a waiter that has you move your feet to walk while holding the gamepad steady to not knock over a plate of food is brilliant.

  5. As much as I hate to see Nintendo doing bad I am very glad these crappy fitness games are failing. It’ll show them this isn’t what we want.

    1. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This will open their eyes for good!!!!!!!

    2. I’m pretty sure they will realize Wii Fit U game didn’t sell well because the Wii U itself has not sold like they wanted to the casual crowd.

You can’t honestly believe that Wii Fit U wouldn’t sell amazingly if the Wii U was pulling numbers like the Wii.

Nintendo will realize this and will continue to make games like these.

      1. Well judging by the fact that mario kart wii outsold brawl, I’m saying mario kart 8 is the last hope for the Wii U. Certainly many people who have a 3ds Will only get the 3ds version of smash and not bother with the Wii U version.

    1. The real big hitters has always been and always will be Mario Kart 8. Also, when paired with Smash Bros this year, it is as big as it gets for Nintendo releases. If those two games don’t make it work…. nothing will.

I’m so serious when I say MK8 and SSB4 are the home run bat of Nintendo launches. These surely, surely, SURELY have to turn things around.

      1. You guys keep saying Mario Kart is the saving grace but aside from the Wii and DS iterations, Mario Kart games have sold less than 10 Million copies each with some cloesr to 5 million, and thats life time sales. Of course MK8 will help boost sales but the casuals that ate up MK Wii arent here anymore. We are not going to see Mario Kart 8 get any wher close to Mario Kart Wii in sales numbers.

  6. Good! Now Nintendo can put all those resources that they have been using for these kinda casual games into hiring David Wise as a full time composer for Nintendo and Retro. Also they can put more money into games that fans have been wantin years F-Zero and StarFox, oh and if some knuckle head tells me how SF and FZ dont sell then why the fuck Nintendo funds shitty stuff like WiiFitU which also doesnt sell? huh? Nintendo needs to stop chasing casuals with their mainconsoles and start to do it with QOL, separate gamers and casuals forever. Its a win-win for them.

  7. evidently these numbers don’t take into account everybody who got the game for free all you had to do was buy the Wii Fit you meter and download the game for free that means you pay nothing extra to get a game but 20 bucks. So instead of dog in the numbers everybody who doesn’t have a Wii Fit balance board or a Wii Fit you probably doesn’t understand or realize that they could Not possibly have sold a lot of games at all upgrade it for free.

  8. I purchased the pedometer back in November and got fit for free at that point. Should’ve released numbers on the folks who did that option.

  9. Are they counting the units that were sold with the wii fit balance board only? The only other way to get the game by itself was through the e-shop, even free with the purchase of a pedometer. I wonder how many nabbed it for free? Let’s face it, how many don’t have a balance board sitting in a closet somewhere?

    1. See i went out and got a balance board for 40$ and the fit meter for 20$ which added up of course to 60$ and since the game was free at the time I was able to pay the price of the game but I instead bought the equipment. So I’m guess they did not consider digital and free versions, but these numbers were from last month

  10. I question the numbers on SKUs. Are we talking about people who bought the retail unit as a whole, bought the game or are we talking people who had a balance board and just went for the meter.

I went for the meter in January so did they count me as a sale. And how did they come to this number, was it based on moved SKUs or number of people on the Miiverse. I personally haven’t private matter.

      1. It doesn’t really matter if the number are off here or there, but these numbers show that people by and large have moved on. Casuals are not in it for the long haul and Nintendo can’t seem to grasp that. They are fickle and only jump on things that are trendy.

Wii Fit U is just another microcosm if how Iwata is trying to shoehorn HIS vision of what gaming should be into the populous rather than give the gamers what they are asking for. Nobody asked for this game and the sales reflect that.

And before someone tried to jump up and defend it, the install base of the Wii U in America is roughly around 2.4 million (give or take a few accounting for trade-ins and bricked systems) and Wii Fit U has only sold around 50,000 US according to VGChartz, 20,000 according to NeoGAF. Whatever the actual number is, I know it ain’t nowhere close to 2.4 million which means that even the install base of the Wii U in the US could care less about such things.

When is Iwata going to wake up, or the people that can forcibly remove him going to wake up?

  11. Wii Played U

    Lil babies

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Can’t wait for INFAMOUS SECOND SON

While you babies are playing stupid baby Yarn Yoshi I will be playing a true next gen game. Lol

    1. The only thing valid in your painfully embarrassing dissertation is the first phrase which is absolutely correct and I agree 100%.

      “Wii played U”

That is the point, Iwata. A point he’ll never get even after he is fired.

  14. So one random guy says it sold undrr 20k and that’s news?
I’d say slow news day, but this website will take anything. Seriously, the quality here is getting worse ab worse.
Let’s not forget that this comment will be removed because you can’t take criticism but you leave the other, disgusting comments here. You just lost a long time reader.

  15. I’m sorry, but this is stupid. The game has already been out for three months, during which it was essentially FREE. I think just about everyone who wanted this game probably already got it. Plus, what are they calculating? Is this just the retail game/meter or are they also figuring in the board bundles? What about the digital sales? What about the fact that up until the end of January you could save yourself $30 and just buy the Meter. Did they count just the meter sales into their “equation” too?

None of this makes any sense. Are they praising the fact that a three month old “free” game was able to sell 20,000 copies or are they ignoring all of the facts and criticizing the fact that it sold only 20,000 copies?

If they are saying that it sold 20,000 retail copies of just Wii Fit U/Fit Meter SKUs, I’d say that is pretty darn good.

  16. I think that only releasing it in digital and the physical 3 months alter confused people. It should’ve just come normally out like the others did and focus on a big ad. I remember how crazy the Wii Fit love was back with the Wii. I guess Nintendo needs to stop being so messy with releases.
