Ubisoft Details Its Gorgeous New Snowdrop Engine (Video)

Go behind the scenes at Massive Entertainment — A Ubisoft Studio, and discover the power of the Snowdrop engine; Massive’s in-house answer to video game creation on the new generation of consoles. Snowdrop supports the philosophy of the studio to work better, not bigger, by giving content creators the freedom to experiment, prototype and truly unleash their creativity.

      1. I would never want to see a zelda that looks this realistic …….twilight princess is as dark as it should get. The director has already said the next zelda will be neither super realistic (assassins creed/Antrim in terms of graphics) nor really c artoony (windwaker)

  1. This is cool and all, but can the consoles handle this rather than PC’s. Will games use all of this shown, Ubisoft has shown off this type of stuff but real world performance would be nice to see.

Besides going into “hater” mode, I really like what I see. Its amazing how far we as a medium have come in terms of graphics, narrative and more. My first console was the genesis and the bundled sonic the hedgehog, bits are now polygons and resolutions. I am looking forward to what gaming will be and afraid as well. Progress can breed disaster sometimes.

Got a little deeper than I wanted with this comment, oh well its the internet.

      1. The first part “kinda” was, I was stating because Ubisoft is known to drop graphical quality after a tech demo. Not only with Watch Dogs but they did it last gen with Far Cry 3 (it sounds so weird still to say last gen with the PS3 and Far Cry). The PC version at max was well below the tech demo. It didn’t look bad but it wasn’t what was promised.

I guess it gives us the luxury of not trusting them at all…

Similar to how they betrayed our empire…

          1. Quit acting like a tool and grow up. You behave like a eight year old that uses call of duty as a argument to buy a Xbox one.

Also, Ubisoft had far from betrayed Nintendo. The people that bought a Wii U betrayed them because they were the biggest third party supporter but nobody bought their games.

Also, you don’t have a Wii U, so don’t be the kid that stands with a group of people, acts like he saw a movie but read some quotes from imdb because his mommy didn’t let him watch it because it was bedtime.

              1. Looking at the way you commented makes it look like I’m wrong, and i don’t like being wrong. Tell me what’s not correct about the things I said.

So you’re not the typical hater, fair enough…

                  1. Isn’t everything a game?…

                  *wink*

                  2. The Ubisoftians would be considered a real supporter of our machine if they didn’t delay Rayman to begin with, not once but twice, the second one being the one that blew up everything in our face…

                  3. Even if I don’t have a Wii U, I have at least tested some of these games…

And I have to say it’s a pity they had to delay Rayman because of non existant unvalid reasons…

                  1. The first time sucked, but releasing a unfinished game is worse than delaying it. The second time sucked harder and I hated them for it but they still added extra content to the game and we got to enjoy the Rayman Legend challenges App for free… I don’t think that that shows how unwilling and hateful they are too the Wii U, and we also still got the best version of them all.

And the reason for the delay is obviously the fact that the wii u sold terrible at the time. Even now not even 2℅ of their games sold is for Wii U…

Well they siad the game was already pretty much done by the time they decided to delay it…

And the question remains, how will we ever know that those extra content weren’t already there to begin with?…

Considering it sold the most on the Wii U even with the delay, I’d say they missed an even bigger audience at their original date…

                    2. We won’t know for sure but the back to the origins part does sound like something they just added after the main thing was finished and they had spare time don’t you think?

I didn’t know that it did sold the most on Wii U so I secretly enjoy the fact it came back to them and hard. :-P Makes me wonder if it would have sold even more in February, because I had the money and the time back then while I still have to buy it now…

            1. “biggest third party supporter but nobody bought their games”
Okay, what are you on? Because I want some.

              1. I’m talking about them never talking trash about the console, making good ports unlike EA (With the exception of need for speed) still doing at least something for the console.

About the sales, not even 2%of the games they sold is for the Wii U… Any company would stop supporting the console if their games sold that bad, and they are still giving us watch dogs, I don’t think there would be much company’s that would still do that. Especially if you look how EA never actually supported it after the launch….

    1. It well work on ONE and PS4, it could be scaled down for Wii U, but may not produce games for the system. Ubisoft wouldn’t spend so much money to make a engine that would skip a whole generation, also both new systems are not even making 1080p or 4k games YET and wont for another year, keep in mind every one was making power PC games last Gen and only Wii U is still using it, every one now has to change to X86. Which is another reason Wii U games are few and far between. Its one of the reasons watch dogs is delayed

      1. I wasn’t really talking about the Wii U but yea I hear you

And they have spend money on these engine before and they were shown in game tech demos and they were scaled down almost significantly

Is the US the only thing people knows how to create games based on?…

Why not France considering you are french Ubisoftians?…

I’m so tired of seeing the same environments over and over and over…

I want to see Zombies kill people climbing up the Eiffel tower for example and so on…

  3. http://www.change.org/petitions/nintendo-adding-online-multiplayer-and-voice-chat-to-virtual-console-games

    Here’s why it’s important:

Have you ever imagined playing an old classic that you loved and wanted it to be online to show off your skills or even play with friends and family that live to far away to play the game with them. Imagine Super Mario World with online and voice chat, Mario kart with online and voice chat or even super smash bros! from N64 with online multiplayer and voice chat the list can go on and on this can be something that I know will be a hit! We together can make this happen if we show nintendo that we really want this! This would be amazing!

    1. This is whats wrong with this generation. The draw of Nintendo games is to play them with friends IN THE SAME ROOM. There’s nothing more fun than split screen Mario kart or 4 player smash bros. And thats never gonna change

    2. Why don’t you use Skype/Google hangouts if you want to talk to friends and play games? That way you can even speak with friends that don’t own a Wii U. :o So magic, so unique…

    3. But, I do think that they should add voice chat to games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros even if it’s just between friends.

  4. Weak U isn’t getting The Division because it’s a weak console fir lil babies, the division is a amazingly advanced game for real true. Matured gamers, not immature lil babies with a Wii U.

Weak U cannot handle this engine in any form or factor

You will never get a game on Wii U running on this engine. SNOW DROP is too.complex for Weak U

  5. Graphics is not only issue, blinded fanboys. Nintendo should make tool of ease like this. Not the lower intelligent web framework.
