Nintendo Once Accounted For 10% Of Walmart’s Profits

GamesBeat journalist Jeffrey Grubb recently had the opportunity to read through the forthcoming Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation by author Blake J. Harris. The book has plenty of interesting titbits including the revelation that Nintendo once accounted for 10% of Walmarts profits. Here’s some of the facts contained within the 500-plus paged book.

  • Nintendo didn’t care about making friends, and this helped Sega. Making friends was nice for Sega, but it was much easier to rely on the hatred others had for Nintendo.
  • The U.S. government brought a lawsuit against Nintendo on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor
  • The real reason Sega failed was because of the war between Sega of Japan and Sega of America.
  • Walmart barely even wanted to speak to Sega of America, let alone stock its Genesis system back in the early days of the 16-bit console’s life in the U.S. This was…Because Nintendo was scary as hell.
  • Sega of America boss Tom Kalinske was integral to Barbie, Flintstone vitamins, and He-Man

As an educated american, this almost makes me ashamed of being american.

I don’t really blame them for their arrogance. Especially when they made it through last generation all by themselves. But now it’s a really big problem. They need to get more humble.

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Not really, considering how it appears they treat third-parties. Nintendo’s acted like they don’t matter, and now they’re getting screwed for it.

        1. It’s the other way around, bro; Nintendo left the field wide open for third parties to impress people during the Wii U’s launch.
It’s the third parties releasing horrible ports that screwed things up for themselves, not Nintendo’s attitude towards them.

          1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Except they made a console that’s hard to develop for and isn’t that powerful. Not to mention early dev kits aren’t known for being spectacular, and according to that one dev, Nintendo was slow and unhelpful with making the games.

            1. It’s not hard to develop for, assuming you are referring to PowerPC vs x86, it’s mostly BS or at the very least negligible. WiiU is completely capable of handling most engines from PS360, development for it at this point should be straight forward and maybe even cheap. For example: Vigil only had a few guys porting Darksiders2. That dev who was complaining was an Anony. Devs who actually use their true names said the opposite.

No one is mistreating anyone, it’s just the difference in business priorities. Third parties are investing/betting more on AAA game development that requires new tech and more power. Nintendo came out with “another PS3/X360”.
Yes, at this point in time, new X1/PS4 games won’t work on WiiU.
However, third parties had their time with WiiU, all they gave were watered down ports or full price games that were cheaper on other consoles. WiiU got minimal investment.

            2. And since when has that ever stop any developers making games before when it took them the same type and amount of effort making games? Now that the x86 was designed for seamless programming *cough* laziness! *cough, the 3rd party not only turned away from Nintendo for the easy way out on making easy quick buck but also publicly fed lies about its teue specifications and potential instead of saying “we practically abandoned Wii U primarily because it requires more effort, time and money to make games work for that platform compare to PS4/One” which if they would’ve said that, then the public would’ve taken the 3rd party for being tardy and ditching Nintebdo for stupid resons.

So of course they would lie through their teeth about Nintendo’s tech and business decisions to make their credibility faulter into near oblivion and what good would that do if the damage keeps up and Nintendo falls because these assholes have gotten fucking lazy and greedy? The market is already on its way to its second crash with mobile taking the casual and the hardcore being too stupid enough to realize what makes a game a great game anymore besides constantly buying mainstream hollywood-like garbage with ripoff DLCs and IAPs. I wouldn’t blame Nintendo having to carefully hand pick certain games and studios to partner with because that’s exactly how some of us see 3rd parties and know how and why they’re treating Nintendo like shit.

We’re already going straight to hell just for buying consoles specs and misjudging games for the wrong reasons.

        2. And this your comment is an example of failing to see the bigger picture. It’s really quiet the opposite, Nintendo gave the entire launch period to developers to make something for the Wii U, guess what, they decided to be assholes and say we are not worth it. It’s not Nintendo’s fault, it’s the third parties almost entirely.

          1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Hmm, maybe because Nintendo failed to sell the console and the devs were just waiting for the PS4 and X1 to release. I can guarantee you that all those devs who saw the Wii U before launch instantly said or thought, “This needs more power.” Some even told Nintendo apparently. Did they care? Nope. Did they make the console easy to develop for? Nope. I’m not saying it’s entirely Nintendo’s fault, but a good portion of it is.

            1. It’s NOT console sales. For over a year WiiU had more units to consumers vs PS4/X1. Any claim about “oh WiiU is not selling well” is BS, because at the time PS4 and XboxOne was’t even out yet and they were already getting full support. (3DS is a good example, even thought it sold at a faster rate than PS3 or X360, it probably has the lowest 3rd party support of all Nintendo handhelds).

Nintendo got the shaft when Wii was selling like hot cakes, Nintendo got the shaft when Gamecube was on par to PS2 and Xbox. Don’t blame GC’s mini-disc because if devs needed more capacity they could release multi-disc games like Capcom did, plastic discs cost mere pennies to make.

No one is mistreating anyone, but it’s closer to say third parties are mistreating Nintendo.
The Biggest reason Nintendo isn’t getting much support is because 3rd party games sell less on Nintendo platforms. On the other hand Nintendo console owners claim they get lazy ports or half-ass support.

  2. Nintendo has always given me great customer service. People need to be more careful on what they believe and realize that most of the time when there is strong hate for a company it is because they don’t cater to the rich. The same is true for countries. Strong hate is created in the media by those with power, not the normal people like us.

  3. there barley any wii u advertisement wallnart. they mixed wii and wiiu together and hide the wii u’s underselves.

      1. Actually, it kind of does. I went to the Best Buy in Rego Park Queens, around Christmas, the main sections for the Wii U was behind a structural piller. It was nearly impossible to squeeze into and was difficult to see until you were right up on it. On the other hand the rest of the isle was regular Wii and 3DS stuff.

And oh the PS3 and Vita each had their own isle.

    1. Yes. There’s barely any advertisement and no, no one but retailers are hiding Wii U.

Almost everyone, including your own dumbass, has bought into the whole “Wii U is crap” BS 3rd parties have started to drive the platform into the toilets and its nothing but “lack of sales”, 3rd parties don’t wanna make real original games but port 1-2 year gimped garbage or “Wii U has weak CPU/hardware”, everyone with a brain knows they flocked to PS4/One ONLY because its far simpler to program so what they’re saying but technically not in public is “Wii U takes more effort, time and money to program so we chose the easy way out on PS4/One and make more money faster and without much effort” a.k.a “The Greedy & Lazy Way” and they’re using whatever small part of Wii U specs as their grand excuse to say its almost, somehow impossible to program games with because you say one part of its mother sound “weak” while failing to mention the rest that actually plays a role with one another like a puzzle or a cycle.

Oh please. I always knew 3rd parties were fucking lazy and selfish but this act of brainless sabotage is what’s gonna kill the gaming market in the next few years and I can’t wait to see how stupid they all look when Nintendo happens to bail them all out..once again.

      1. Old NIntendo lives in our hearts sitting in our overly glorified living room of a home built of Nostalgia. Even though, it’s now well known Old Nintendo sometimes really be such a big A-hole.

  4. >The U.S. government brought a lawsuit against Nintendo on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor

    That’s pretty messed up.

    1. Like..why? Pearl Harbor was like 70+ years ago and it was in a different time not to mention that Japan fell under the influence of that evil pussy Adolf Hitler so after being A-bombed twice, I’m sure Japan learned their harsh lesson of being a dick against America.

Now America is going back into that “old wounds never heal” BS and suing a gaming company over Old Japan’s military action back in 1940 which the country has already paid and suffered more than enough over that? GET OVER IT YOU DUMBASS POLITICIANS!

  5. those days are over. nintendo is now a pathetic super children friendly clowns run by a clown iwata.

          1. or perhaps you’re too blind to see nintendo’s faults. happens a lot with extreme fanboyism.

  6. Nintendo Or Nothing!

I got my Sega Genesis at Wal-Mart. I think my SNES too. Heck, I got MOST games and consoles at Wal-Mart. Also Target.

No matter how the Wii U does during it’s lifespan, I hope Nintendo’s next console shuts the mouths of all the haters and destroys the competition. It would be awesome to see Nintendo bury Sony and Microsoft.

    1. SegaNintendofan1991

i wish that will happen but did anyone ever noticed that once SEGA left the console market in 2001 a year later nintendo became soft as puppies is their some kind of connection there?
