Is Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water An eShop Exclusive In The United States?

Nintendo of America clearly hasn’t forgotten about Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water as we were all privy to some creepy gameplay footage during one of the Treehouse segments that were broadcast last week. Nintendo updated its North American site to showcase a number of titles that were shown off at E3. What’s interesting is that the placeholder box-art has an eShop symbol on the side which could suggest that its destined for an eShop only release in the United States. This isn’t confirmation by any means, but I guess we should find ou soon.

Thanks, Chesney

  1. The fact you can’t pre-order it anywhere doesn’t help this rumour, but it’s just a rumour imo, because you can still see games for pre-order on major retail sites which will never see a physical release or any release at all.

This is just another case of Nintendo cocking up a good thing with poor management. This game could bring a small number of new fans to Nintendo, but apparently they don’t care.

  2. It’s a double-edged sword here. For a game of this size in terms of budget and quality, having it be eshop only would help cut down on costs because you wouldn’t spend the money on making the physical discs – however, I think in the long run it won’t be good overall for sales because only having it in the eshop limits its reach to consumers.
Not everyone will want to download the game (and, at this point for various reasons, it seems that Nintendo consumers don’t digitally download games as much as owners of other consoles) , or they won’t know it’s on the eshop, or they just don’t use the eshop often enough, if at all, to buy a lot of games. And since it is a bigger game in terms of size, given how small the Wii U’s storage is, there will be even less incentive to buy it in that regard.

    1. The last reason you said is literally what will keep me from buying this. I have been following this game through livestreams, teasers, commercials, etc. and now that it is on the E-Shop I won’t be able to get it; unless I delete a bunch of games that I also paid for.. I hope this is a rumor..

  3. Another self-fulfilling prophecy by Nintendo: it will be a dud at retail, so let us forego any sort of advertisement and risk. It’s not like Splatoon paid off despite being an unfamiliar IP in both Japan and the West.

  4. Yes, digital downloads are just fine considering the size of the external hdd most of us are using. Beats having to deal with a physical copy and the potential for scratching it or outright ruining it. It also preserves that laser unit. More eShop only exclusives please.

  5. No! Not everybody has a fast internet connection and available credit for eshop. And the retail copy will always remind me I have the game, out of sight out of mind, that happens to my downloaded games…

And that cover made me want to own the retail copy so don’t take it away from me or everyone else.

    1. No! I have a a fast connection and money. It’s faster to download than to drive to a store 20+ minutes away.

  6. Impatient as always. Nintendo of America haven’t made a 100% confirmation whether Fatal Frame will be eShop only both at the eShop or in stores. It’s not even labeled rated M just yet. And there’s no announcement of an official release date until later on. The moral says it all…

  7. I’m not supporting an eShop version of this game lol. I wanted it bad, but if it’s like that, I have no problems keeping my money. It’s just a game. Life goes on.

Nintendo giveth, Nintendo taketh away …. But seriously I hope this is not an eshop only game. I loved the Japanese box art and dreamed of having that on my games shelf. I was hoping for an exact copy of that box art for the western release but now knowing we may not even get that makes me depressed :(

  9. I hope this isn’t true. The game should have an option of being physical too. If the rumors hold true, it means that Nintendo didn’t think it was worth it for Fatal Frame to be in a disc because they feel it won’t sell well which is a shame. I’ll wait for an official confirmation from Nintendo before I assume any further
