Sonic Developer Takashi Iizuka Is Back In US To Oversee Future Titles

SEGA is getting serious about Sonic as famed Sonic the Hedgehog developer Takashi Iizuka has arrived in the United States in an effort to oversee all future titles. This is obviously a move to get the series back on track after the disappointment and critical panning of the last Sonic title Sonic Boom on both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Let’s hope this move steers Sonic in the right direction.

Iizuka’s return is notable has he headed up development of mainline Sonic games, starting as director of 1998’s Sonic Adventure, on the Dreamcast. He moved to San Francisco to oversee development of Sonic Adventure 2, heading Sega Studio USA, which produced a number of Sonic titles. His experience with the franchise dates back to the Sega Genesis. He serves as vice president of product development and will move from Tokyo to “establish Los Angeles as the centralized hub for the global brand,” according to the press release.

  1. I personally like the majority of 3D Sonics. I especially find games like Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic and the Black Knight to be very underrated.

But in any case, glad to see him around.

  2. Sounds like good news to me. I need the next Sonic game to be great. It’s a shame that it’s been so long since I 100%’d anything Sonic related other than Smash.

  3. Sonic is one the few major franchises that has yet to get a true “next ten” title. I would be interested to see one. I think it’s good that Iizuka is trying to get things back on track, however there is no excuse for letting things get to the way they are…

  4. Sweet, hopefully we’ll get another truly great Sonic game again :)

Also, hate to be off-topic, but… Fair use and internet freedom of speech are at stake. We’ve got 24 hours to raise our voice and tell the government to fix fair use. https://www.takedownabuse.org/ (Google “WTFU” or “where’s the fair use” for more info.)

I hope you won’t mind my plugging the solution to a major internet crisis. :P
