No Wii Online Play For Third Party Developers

News surfaced yesterday that Nintendo have made a decision that currently allows only first, and second party titles to feature online play at the Wii launch.

This move was announced in an interview with Activision via online gaming publication Ign. Activision stated that Nintendo have decided to remain heavy handed on who has access to the online code library’s for Wi-Fi based play, and will continue to remain so until 2007.

This decision will prove to be a blow for developers such as Ubisoft whose first person launch titles Red Steel and Far Cry would benefit greatly with the acquisition of online play. Though it has to be said I imagine the development teams were aware of this predicament from an early stage, as Nintendo has always been extremely cautious about gaming online.

With third party developers having access to the inclusion of online play in their titles come 2007, will we see repackaged versions of third party launch titles, this time equipped with various online options that were previously missing from the original launch versions? Sounds like a fairly reasonable assumption to me.

  1. I don’t think Nintendo were ever going to compete against Microsoft for online play as they are both looking to do achieve different goals with their online options.

Microsoft is offering an unprecedented amount of online options available for its Xbox Live users via its subscription based business model.

Nintendo will be looking at providing users purely with free and simple online gaming. Though advanced features could appear in the future.

  2. The only way I will see this as a major blow is if Red Steel has an awesoe multiplayer, at Wii launch Zelda and Metroid will tide me over nicely until online gets into full swing.
