Nintendo Wii: Nintendo Carefully Considering 3D For The Wii’s Successor

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has informed Japanese business publication Nikkei that he’s closely monitoring the 3D TV market, and depending on consumer uptake, 3D could well be a prolific feature of the Wii’s successor.

“If you display a 3D image, the image quality becomes extremely bad, so we’d probably do it with the next system”, he said. “We’re thinking that the timing should be once the 3D television adoption rates crosses the 30% mark. We’re looking at the adoption trends.”

  1. Oh man, I really hope the next console isn’t 3D, my family just upgraded to an HDTV, it’s gonna be years before we have a 3DTV. Perhaps they should do this on the console after next, but not the next.

  2. This may be really cool, but it doesnt depend in the console then, it depends if the person haves a 3d tv. if they dont, they will probally need a 3d tv to play it…and it may not be that cheap,

  3. If the next console is 3d i wouldn’t mind so much, Nintendo always gives us options, even the 3DS that has 3D built in already, has an option to turn off 3D, so the console should have the same feature.

  4. Oh please, 3D television adoption is not going to hit 30% anytime soon. This is a pipe dream. They didn’t even do HD last time.

  5. No, Nintendo. I don’t want 3D on the console! Let the 3DS have it’s gimmick to itself! Make a new gimmick!

  6. No, no and NO! Wait for people to catch up on 3D. Not everyone will be able to fork out cash for 3DTVs! I like 3D but it’s too early to adapt to it now.

  7. Doesn’t really sound like a good idea just yet. I was recently at Best Buy, and the 3D LED TV is like $6000 dollars, and an extra $100 for the glasses. Wait until the 3DS is old enough and consider making a 3D Wii

  8. the whole reason they made it hand held is so people wouldn’t have buy 3D TV’s, and they do it anyway?

  9. Satoru is already thinking about the next generation Wii which means that it’s not that far away and is already in development, if not finished, and awaiting final notches. The news wii games announce this year will only sustain the wii for another 6 months. After all, there aren’t that many casual gamers left in the world that don’t have a wii yet. The PS3 with Move (Wii rip-off controller) will be increasing in sales in the upcoming month and Nintendo is going to be forced to upgrade graphics and make the Wii-mote more accurate in order to stay competitive. I predict that Nintendo will be announcing the new Wii as early as 2011 Holidays.

  10. why would he say something about image quality becoming shitty in 3D when they just announced a 3D handheld???

  11. I’m sure that if 3D is added to the next console, which I’m sure it will be, it will be optional, like on the 3DS. That way, those who already have 3D TVs can enjoy it, and those who don’t, or can’t see 3D anyway, won’t be forced to buy a 3D capable television just to enjoy the console.

I have never in my entire life seen anything in 3D, so it will be exciting once I get my hands on the 3DS. If 3D on the 3DS works out well, I see no reason not to include 3D in the Wii’s successor. Oh, and I just thought of something. Was it Sharp who is developing glasses-less 3DTV’s? If / When that project becomes a success, that means that there will be two different ways to display 3D: Stereoscopically, and….whatever using glasses is called, lol. The console will need to distinguish which is being used, and adjust accordingly. How would this affect the games?
