Nintendo DS: Pokémon Black & White Review

I’ll openly admit it. This is the first Pokémon game I’ve really delved into. So here it goes:

Starter Pokémon

There are three different types of Pokémon for you to choose from. Firstly you’ve got the delectable Oshawott who is a water type Pokémon, secondly you’ve got Snivy who is a grass type Pokémon, and thirdly you’ve got Tepig who is a fire type Pokémon.

I started Pokémon White with Tepig the Fire Type Pokémon and I was pleased with my decision as I had little difficulty overcoming my opponents when the going got tough. If you’re up for more of a challenge then I would suggest opting for Snivy.

The Unova Region

The game takes place in Unova, a vast region with scorching deserts, grassy plains and a wealth of bridges. Within Unova there are 156 different types of Pokemon for you to catch from Ice Pokemon to Dragon Pokemon all with a wealth of abilites.

Unova is littered with quaint pretty towns with plenty of cheerful and engaging inhabitants. It’s a dream world, somewhere you would love to be able to escape to and spend time mingling with the villagers and raising Pokémon.

Nemesis

You’ll soon find yourselves coming across the formidable Team Plasma who’re determined that Pokémon should be liberated from their trainers who they believe only use the Pokemon for their own uses.

Clearly this isn’t the case as the inhabitants of Unova are extremely attached to their Pokémon which they have trained and have been brought up with. When Pokémon randomly go missing their owners are genuinely heartbroken.

So it’s up to you to challenge Team Plasma’s deluded beliefs and fight for what you, your Pokémon, your friends, and the majority of Unova think is right.

Closing comments

Pokémon White is a rare game that captivates you from the very start. Everything is accessible and extremely well explained meaning that newcomers such as myself can venture into a game with such a long and established history as the Pokémon franchise.

Many people are proclaiming Pokemon Black & White the defining edition in the series and if that’s the case then I can not wait to get my hands on some of the older titles. I feel I’ve missed out on something extremely special.

9.5/10

  1. I’m sorry to say this but this (section/story, i don’t know what to call it?) sounds fake. But Why do so many people get Pokemon White just because the legendary looks cooler?

    1. It’s not that the legendary looks cooler.

The main major differences between Black and White are that in White, you can collect Rare Items, whereas in Black you can buy them, and in White, you can catch Rare Unevolved Pokemon, whereas in Black you can Battle Fully Evolved Rare Pokemon.

    2. @Yuki, that’s a perfect reason to get one over the other, it shouldn’t bother you. I like Pokemon Black because I think Reshiram looks better and suits me more

  2. In my opinion, the start is actually kind of dull, but the moment you have a second or third pokemon, it gets a lot better. Maybe it was just bad for me because I was annoyed about not having a second Pokemon for the first gym. I’d have to agree that this is the best of the series, though. Still not done yet, even.

  3. @Zaazaa0

you get your pokeballs faster than ever! (played yellow, silver & heartgold) further more you get another ~starter pokemon as a gift in the Dreamyard before you are facing your first gym leader.

  4. Oh, you are definitely missing out on some fun, especially if you haven’t played Pokemon Yellow.

    …Of course, I started with Snivy… /sigh/ (6th gym, here I come~)

    Nice little review!

  5. I’m not sure why plenty of bridges are a highlight of the game, but anyway. I’m excited to get either this or Okamiden for my birthday – the DS just has way too many good games >.<

  6. That has to be the best review of the game I’ve read – genuinely! It’s great that you’ve wrote a out it as a sole, standalone game, rather than comparing it to what the past games did, and what this should do.

Excellent review! When can we expect to see more?

  7. Ah, so you’re a newcomer to the world of Pokemon?
Black/White are indeed good to great games, but in my opinion, they’re not the best Pokemon games ever made. I will give them the credit of being the best Pokemon games since the original Gold/Silver, though. I’d recommend playing those, as well as the original Red/Blue (or the remakes for the GBA, FireRed/LeafGreen). If I had to pick the weakest Pokemon generation, it would have to be gen 3 (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, excluding FR/LG). But nevertheless, all Pokemon games are good regardless and it’s definitely worth going back and playing them all.

    1. I am indeed : ) Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll certainly be playing more Pokémon games in the future, that’s for sure. Hopefully Nintendo will make some of the older titles available on the 3DS eShop.

  8. Man, I’m from Brazil and I’ve been checking your site since last year (July). It’s great, everything is so clear and straight to the point. I’m looking forward to the next review!

    Best Regards!

  9. I started with Oshawott and so far I’m training to beat the Elite Four the second time (or first time, whatever you call it).

Pokemon Black and White is the most addicting games since Red and Blue.

Great job on the review, although in my opinion, the score should be higher ;D

    1. I would have loved to give it a 10 but something held me back. If the next entry in the series is anywhere as near as good as this one then you can fully expect a 10!

  10. Wow, I can’t believe you’ve never played Pokemon before Black and White. Glad to hear that you’ve taken a shine to the series. As someone who’s played the games from the beginning, I highly recommend Pokemon Yellow when it’s released on the Virtual Handheld. It’s really quite amazing how well it has aged. Happy Pokemoning!

The best part is when i spent over two hour trying to catch a deino lol hydreigon ftw!!! one of the best games in the series but not the most challenging i’d give it a 9
