According to the Game Critics Awards Sony’s successor to the PlayStation Portable proved to be more popular with journalists than Nintendo’s Wii U console. The PlayStation Vita managed to obtain the award for best hardware at the E3 2011, whilst the Wii U went away empty-handed. The Game Critics Awards were voted on by more than 25 members of the media. Does anyone think they may have made the wrong decision?

I can see the PS Vita being stronger in E3 than the Wii U did, mainly because I couldn’t understand what in the world Nintendo was showing during their presentation (of course I understand now after the fact lol). But for the Wii U to gain nothing from the Game Critics Awards?

The way I see it the vita needs the hype. It has no real franchises coming to it and I’m betting it’s selling at a loss. I mean when was the last time portable consoles and home consoles interacted with no lag? If you thought the ps3 cell was hard to program wait till you see them try to mimmic the wii u with out a 60fps game play.
So far nintendo method is easy and best of all it works and was designed to make a developers job easier to use which means you will see more games that use the feature well.
Problem with Sony is they have never been software developers. I can not think of one game I will miss from them when they are gone. We all know nec was cooler anyway.
The vita will get a HDTV connector back and they will call it the ps4.

No offense but no. I think the Vita had a better presence. Overall its hardware is a lot more adaptable to different types of development. Its practically the same thing only without it being tied to a system in the same room. Don’t get me wrong the WiiU looks cool, just Vita offers everything it does in a truly portable manner.

You have to admit, the PS Vita is a pretty awesome piece of kit. But I wouldn’t compare it to a home console for a second. Totally different markets with different games and demographics. Still, if it’s a choice between the Wii U and the PS Vita, I have to go with the Vita, though this is ONLY because I am biased towards handheld devices. I always prefer a good handheld I can take with me anywhere over a console which sits at home all day. :-) Speaking of, been playing the heck out of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on my 3DS lately! The portable gaming market belongs to 3D visuals, which aren’t ready for the big screen big audience yet, unless you are willing to shell out 1000 dollars in 3D glasses for 10 of your friends.

I don’t think Nintendo and Microsoft have that big of a rivalry,.. Microsoft has the Kinect, but that has no controllers, so it’s unique and not a rip off, as for Sony, they rip off Nintendo (and possibly even Microsoft) every chance they get, the PS Vita has a touch screen right? (DS) The Playstation has the Playstation Move (Wii) Sooner or later there’s going to be a PSP 3D, I’m not to worried about Microsoft at the moment.

Portable gaming and Home based gaming are too different areas in which the consoles are completely unique in how they are going about things.

To be honest, I kinda saw this coming, also because it’s a handheld vs. home console. Don’t forget that there were attractive game titles like “Unchartered 3” for both the PS3 and the PS Vita. Besides, they also demonstrated the power of the device at E3, and its hardware are even better than, for e.g, the Nintendo 3DS (I own a black one BTW)… including graphics, Augmented Reality and social gaming (like “StreetPass”).
With Wii U, on the other hand, Nintendo didn’t say much about the console at E3, which might have led to the 5.7% drop in stock value. And, there aren’t much game titles announced for it at E3 2011… unless you count Zelda, “New Super Mario Bros. Mii”, and a possible Mii game. To be honest, the Wii U was announced a year too early; it’s set to be released in 2012, so you know.
But most importantly, we’re talking about a handheld vs. home console. So far, it might imply that guys are, for now, going for mobile gaming. Unlike the Nintendo 3DS, the PS Vita seems to be ahead, from graphics to AAA-title games from third-party studios,
the vita copied Augmented Reality from 3DS, they didn’t put it in until after the 3DS announced that it would have augmented reality.

Look at Microsoft’s Kinect. Even though Sony was the first one to implement the camera to a console and created the EyeToy, Microsoft used the idea to its full potential, making a peripheral that, in the future, will create new types of games. The Kinect is better than Sony’s EyeToy because… well, I think you know the answer. Technology will, and always will be, advancing. Did the people hate Peter Cooper Hewitt for creating the fluorescent lightbulb? Did they hate him for improving it? No. Because it is better.
Lets look at it this way:
3DS resistive touchscreen –improve–> Vita’s capacitive touchscreen
3DS augmented reality –improve (A LOT imho)–> Vita’s augmented reality
3DS Streetpass (sucks)–improve–> Vita’s Near
3DS internet (sucks) –imrove–> Vita’s internet
Oh, and you just answered your own question. The Vita is a portable PS3 (all gamers in the past drool at these words but thought it was impossible) that has smart features as the consoles like in-game voice chat, gorgeous graphics, dual analogue sticks and it IS “the new next gen work of art” because the Vita is the best gaming and multimedia handheld EVAHH!!! :D

Augmented Reality isn’t something that can developed in just one year. And it takes even longer to implement. People fail to understand that when they say Sony is copying other companys’ ideas, they fail to realize how long it takes to develop said ideas, much less make them better. Its nothing like copying and paysting if that’s what you were thinking.
Makes sense, if only because we have so little information on it. PS Vita has far more games that are known to be coming to the system, and is an impressive piece of tech that could finally give Sony a real foothold in the portable gaming market.

Of course it had a better E3 showing. People didn’t even understand that the Wii U was a console, and more games were showed off for the Vita. That doesn’t mean the PSV is the better piece of technology, though.
Perhaps, i just dot think the Vita is a good idea entirely, I love HD graphics and all, but, I have an 42 inch HDTV and a ps3 for that, I don’t think that games like Uncharted are served justice on that tiny screen. And as for power and stuff, I see android phones matching it relatively easily upon its arrival.

As gamers pointed out on this article on Joystiq, it is best in SHOW. Keep in mind that Nintendo did not SHOW anything except the controller with a few tech demos, not any actual footage or playable games.
I think the Wii U struck more “potential” but failed to SHOW anything about it. We didn’t even know if it was a console or portable system as they didn’t show the console itself (till after). So if Nintendo couldn’t even SHOW the physical console, how could they win best in the SHOW? … I love the Wii U and think it will be awesome and still plan to preorder it, but when I understood the point of view of “show” vs. “potential/short demos”, it is easy to see that it did not win.

I’m a fanboy of all before anyone moans, but out the two (WiiU, Vita), I’m more looking forward to Vita. Bit fed up of hearing about what devs are gonna release for it. Half the the games they say will be to old. Vita is sounding fresher at the minute. I have a 3DS and am pretty let down with it at the mo, nothing is making me shout out loud. The 3D is good, but how much depth can u take, real 3D surely comes out at you ( I know glasses may help,but don’t big up real 3D ).

I think back touch screen is highly innovative in a portable gaming platform, though the Vita is not the first to use said technology but the first to implement it in this way. And when you look at it that way, there really is no innovation in the Wii U either, it’s simply a collection of features that are already in their portable consoles, but built to a bigger scale with a streaming capability.

Seeing as the Wii U is pretty much a prototype, this doesn’t surprise me. Things are looking bright for the PSV as it stands, and I think Nintendo needs to counter that.

Wow, there sure are a lot of mad Nintendo fanboys. Just admit it, the reveal of the Wii U sucked. Nintendo had nothing to really show anything exciting about the Wii U at all. All they did was talk about the controller tablet (which looks like a huge IPad), didn’t show any games for it (except multiplats, & they even admitted that they were taken off of PS3 & 360 versions of games), & to add insult to injury, titles such as the Super Smash Bros. game have just got started developing & will even take years to release.
IMO, they should’ve waited until E3 2012 to reveal it, because it clearly proved that it wasn’t ready at all. It was the worst console reveal at ANY E3 ever.
And to those of you that say that Nintendo will kill Sony & Microsoft, in your dreams! Plus if PS Vita is the same as the PSP, then the Wii U is basically a home DS! But what are you talking about? If the PSP Vita is like the PSP Sony will go bankrupt in their video game department. The PSP got completely crushed in every way by the DS. No question about it. Just because you can play Uncharted or CoD on the go doesn’t make it an amazing device. The games announced for Vita suck, they’re just slightly less powerful ports of PS3 games.
Highly doubt that Sony will be going bankrupt in the gaming industry just because another competitor beat their product. Sony didn’t put Nintendo out of business when they won twice against them with both PS1 & the PS2.

Wrong, buddy, wrong. If that were the case, then we wouldn’t be having fighting game tournaments, fighting game sites like Shoryuken.com, eventhubs.com, etc., at all, & people wouldn’t still be playing with others online on games such as Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (still being played by loads of gamers to this day, & it’s now 11 years old), along with many others.
Plus 3G is optional. You don’t exactly have to pick up the 3G version of PS Vita at all.
Its the same with smash bros, its extremely old but I go to the library and ppl have tournaments there. Let me rephrase, Smash bros is a really great fighter, Not the greatest of all time but really awesome. I do think it deserves to be looked at more but since its not a traditional fighter, it’s not up there with street fighter and DoA, KoF, etc in all those gaming tournament shows.
Any new system is going to have more powerful hardware. Big woop, another analog stick. And what are you going to do with a rear touch pad? The Wii U is nothing like a DS. If you didn’t know, DS stands for Dual Screen. There’s only one screen. It’s not portable, either. The Psp Vita is just a Psp with touch pads and another analog stick.

The wii u won the show. I don’t care what the game industry media says. Is crytek, epic, etc coming to the psp? Nope. The psvita is going to be a ps3 portable and a little better than the pspgo unless monsterhunter comes out 3G support is going to kill it also. There will be a sign up contract with the penalty.
I would be positive about the vita if Sony knew what creativity was but they are just a knock off nintendo now. iOS 5 is going to crush this system. Why do I say that, well there is no reason for the vita to exsist you have the same games on the home console.
I think this is just the medias way of perssuring nintendo for more details.
I think the nintendo hardcore are the only ones that don’t need the big media outlets to stay informed.
firstly, comparing the wii U and the vita, it doesnt make sense! they are completely different. The vita does deserve to win best hardware at “E3” not the world just E3, because nintendo stuffed up the presentation of the wii U (it needed more clarity). The vita wont be as successful though because if u own a ps3 there is no need for a handheld that doesnt offer anything new or exclusive besides the 3G internet. the 3ds and wii U have exclusive games that make the console so successful like mario (obviously), zelda, kirby, metroid and pokemon (everyone seems to forget pokemon and its enormity). So nintendo with its games and innovative gameplay will always succeed over graphics and power (which is sony in a nutshell) so dont worry about the wii U success because u will see the results when its released and see the vita’s decline when people realise it has nothing new to offer from the psp (except for the touchscreen but thats outdated). Feel free to let me know what you think. :)

Let’s focus on the right criterias.
Nintendo Target audience was vintage gamers but then they took the missing market of old and young with their wii and ds. Something that don’t failed to do with its psp.
Being a pure gamer I am only interested in games, regardless which platform, I now make an earning so have the luxury to treat meself. I get thr ds for Mario kart. Xbox for gears of war and ps3 for uncharted.
But for gamers, I feel nintendo is letting me down by focusing purely on its new found customer base and not giving me what I enjoyed from the nes snes n64 years back.
I feel that microsoft have taken that away from Nintendo by being a consolse purely for a passionate gamer like me. On the other hand i dont like my ps3 as its targeted at guys with money who need a media player and this hits the jackpot and so they have a much high income based customers.
Bought a 3ds solely for ssf4 and its a nice port I await Mario to bring back my childhood gaming hero.
i think the wii u and the ps vita look cool….but sony just presented their product better
I have both nintendo and sony consoles and handhelds but I won’t be buying the vita. Why? The original psp had a removable battery which meant that if mine broke/messed up/leaked, I could go out and buy a new at gamestop. The vita doesn’t have that so if the battery messes up, you need to buy a new one. To me that’s what sucks and if sony doesn’t change it, it could fail. I don’t want to spend $250 every time my battery won’t charge anymore.
There are places were they replace internal battery’s on almost anything and what about the ds and 3ds you’d have to do the same thing
That’s a bit of lazy thinking Jonathan. As with other dedicated battery devices, there will always be a battery replacement service that will be able to replace the battery for you. It will not cost $250.
I think the PS3 and Xbox are dying, just not as fast as the Wii. All those consoles have is Halo and Modern Warfare, and other 1st Person Shooters. Take those games away, and what’s left? Not much. Bungie just sold Halo, and whos to say the new company will make another huge Halo on the Xbox/PS3? And Nintendo didnt copy the Ipad. It takes longer than 3 years to make something like that! The Wii U isnt coming out very soon, so all those companies making games are most likly not finished making thier games! You really cant show a game thats only half way through development.
Take all the shovelware and children games away from the Wii and what do you have left, First-party titles and a small sprinkling of third-party software.
LMAO, good ownage there, Apocacrux. Also, PS3 & 360 have plenty of more games than just shooters (especially on Xbox Live Arcade & Playstation Network). Anyone who seriously thinks that shooters is all the 360 & PS3 has is a buffoon. Plus there are still plenty of games coming out for those two consoles.
Exactly, one thing a lot of people seem to forget about is the purely downloadable titles on all platforms and I will say Xbox and PSN have a very strong showing of those, while the Wii may have Virtual Console it is still lacking in original IPs on WiiWare.

Last time i checked it wasnt a first person shooter that had the #1 best rated spot for ten years. That was Ocarina of Time.
Most of those downloadable games on PSN are from the PS2 or PSX, anyway.Cant get any closer to VC.
It is a shame that Nintendo only has first party titles to boast about in regards to their success, it’ almost amazing other companies were able to succeed with next to no first party support on the console.
Also, not sure you have actually used a PS3 as there are no PS2 games on PSN, I wish, but no. Also, PSX games make up a small percentage of the downloadable offerings on PSN. Still I would say XBLA has the strongest offering overall for downloadable games.
I agree with you that other systems have a way better selection of downloadable games. The only really good things on WiiWare are some of the Virtual Console. I know that the PS3 AND 360 have other games, but all the big games on there are shooters. You don’t really hear much more about other games that aren’t shooters.
I dunno about that, I can name a couple really popular games that are not shooters. Final Fantasy XII, Castlevania, Oblivion, Skyrim, Forza, Need for Speed, Gran Turismo, Dragon age, Darksiders, Mass Effect(arguably an RPG), Mirrors Edge, Too Human, Dead or Alive 4, Bayonetta, those are just form my collection, but they all got plenty of media coverage.
I think it would be harder to name a quality Wii games that isn’t part of a Nintendo Franchise.

All the 3ds games are ports,give me something new,I’ve beaten Zelda 50 times I don’t need to beat it on the 3ds, and starfox64 the title says everything it’s from nintendo 64 nothing new,at least psv is bringing something new to the table,I like nintedo but the psv’s game line up is way better it doesn’t even matter to me about hardware anymore I just want the games,and even the new games nintendo made suck(submarine game) check the ign ratings,in my opinion I think playstation won this time.o and nobody’s copying anyone,if anyone’s copying anyone it’s nintendo there about to redesign the 3ds and give it two analog sticks!!!
