Nintendo: People ‘Don’t Want’ PlayStation Vita At $299, Same With Nintendo 3DS At $249

Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour at Heavy Iron Studios have told GamesIndustry.Biz that the PlayStation Vita launch will be a “car wreck”. They believe that if people weren’t prepared to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS then there’s absolutely no way everyday consumers would want to purchase a PlayStation Vita at $299.

“If people aren’t willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay $299 for Vita? People don’t want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that’s why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are the devices of choice, they offers multiple functions outside of gaming.”

“People don’t want it. That’s Nintendo huge challenge – how do they add value to that?”

    1. The PS VITA costs $249. People use the price of the 3G because they want to make it look more expensive than it is.

    1. I think they’re already close to losing money on each machine, and they can’t change the hardware now.

  1. Um, no disrespect, Heavy Iron Studios, but but you’re just a bunch of uneducated morons. NO ONE will pay $299 for a PSVita, but it’s not because of the price – it’s because of AT&T. $249 is far more plausible.

    1. Yeah… I know I won’t be buying the $299 version, for multiple reasons, mainly because you have to pay a monthly fee (at least that’s what I heard) and the fact that you can’t play games online on the 3g (again, that’s what I heard).

If neither of those are true, then I might be more inclined to it, but I doubt AT&T would not try to profit from this.

      1. I doubt they’d charge you a monthly fee or stop you playing games on the 3G version, it’s probs free like the Kindle. Why would they charge you more for the 3G version and then make you pay a monthly fee anyway?

    1. Yeah but the 3DS was originally $249 and no one (or not enough people) was buying it, which is why the price has dropped, so he’s saying that if people weren’t buying the 3DS at that price they defo won’t buy the vita at a higher price

      1. I will pay 250 for a vita but I didnt pay that for a 3ds. Cause there were no games. I gladly paid $170 though. Still haven’t bought a game yet

  2. I still blame the 3DS ‘failure’ due to software, not price. I will blame the Vita failure for price, not software.

    1. That’s ridiculous, it’s definitely a combination of the two, nintendo aren’t stupid, they’ve cut the price so low they’re now making a loss on each console, they wouldn’t do that unless they were sure the price is contributing to it’s failure.

      1. How can it be certain it’s a combination? We will see in the next 2 months how much it picks up. Sales in Nov/Dec account for increased quality software, Mario 3D land and MK7. I’m not a hater, or someone that regrets purchase. I’m just disappointed I’m playing more DS, VC games than 3DS games.

I think the price adjustment was to encourage a purchase now, and deter people from purchasing a Vita. It was a well placed timing with the Vita’s impending release in October.

I think there are more people who wanted quality first party titles and would have paid full price than those that were waiting for the first price drop.

        1. Vita comes out in 2012

Comes out in Japan this year only :(

But it gives more time for them to have a great launch line up for the US/EU

          1. Yep, I was stating why the price drop happened when it did. I believe it was within a week after that the Vita was pushed to 2012. This news couldn’t have been better for the 3DS.

        2. Most people didn’t buy the 3DS because it lacks games. Sure it can play your DS games, but without any really strong launch titles, or strong titles in general until around the time the PSVita launches, it’s pretty much a flop. I doubt many people remember that the DSwas successful because by the time it became the DS Lite it had a ton of games, which is what helped it sell, and a decent price point. They already fixed this by reducing the 3DS price, however, the lack of games STILL keeps me from caring about this system vs the Vita. When it comes down to what system you are going to get, seriously, are you going to get the system with 4 good 1st party games, or the one with potentially 30 or 40 good third party games combined with 1st parties? I’ve got my eye on both and the “Big N” needs to step it up with better games if they plan to survive. I’m already waiting out the storm, seeing what the winter holiday season has in store for the Vita, before touching the lack of games that exist on the 3DS.

        1. You aren’t taking into account the money they spent on research, development, marketing, etc. Your number is just how much the parts cost. :/

  3. I agree. If they got rid of some of the features like pointless touchscreens etc and shaved off £100 or so (and also made some decent games. NO. I STILL DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT UNCHARTED OR LITTLE BIG PLANET.) I’d get a PSP

  4. Knowing what happened with the sales of the 3DS at the start at 249, it’s obvious the same will happen with the Vita, only this thing costs another 50.

    299 € = 432.0849 U.S. dollars
    249 € = 359.8299 U.S. dollars
and yet, the consoles, both the 3DS and PSVita are priced the same in both reguions
    3DS= 249$ or 249€
    PSVita= 299$ or 299€
is it just me, or is something incredibly wrong with this picture?

    1. 250$ actually for vita but I agree with you, I live in the UK and all they’ve done to the price is translate that “$” into a “£”.

That said, I’d probably get it from the US as the Vita is apparently region free

All in all making it 173.09€ if you got it from the US

      1. Sorry but that’s wrong, from what i’ve seen the 3DS was max £230 at launch and then went down to around £190 after a while. (As there was no RRP in the UK)

        1. You cannot do straight currency conversions, things do not work that way, there are a number of factors that go into the price of items from one region to another.

    1. As do I. As more and more games come, and more downloads/software are available, I will have no reason to use my ipod touch other than for occasional music listening and catching up on TV shows since I canceled my Netflix subscription.

    2. This. I went on the app store today after months of not going on, the apps on the top 50 list are crap for the most part

  5. i think the 3DS will crush the competition this holiday. mainly due to its new price drop and the wealth of great games coming this holiday.

    fuck sony

  6. Its apparent that in the course of sony’s history, they are posing nintendo products with fan tweaks. Vita will not only fail, from price drops, but provides the same AR, Gyro, Accelerometer, Camera dept tech, ect. into its hardward. the only addition, and extra joystick, and touch pad. u get riped of with the vita

    1. plus, only downloadable titles.
you can’t replay your PSP games, unless you re-buy them from the Playstation Network…
not only that, if the PSN gets hacked again, you can’t even buy games.

Basically, if someone hacks PSN again Sony is fucked.

      1. What the hell are you talking about? The Vita isn’t Download only, it uses cartridges. The only Sony system that was download only was the PSP Go.

        1. you might want to recheck your sources, the Vita will not support UMD
they will however support some kind of flash drive that will store a game if i recall correctly from their press conference at E3

Still, that does mean no PSP games will be playable, unless you re-buy them.
Vita games will be availabel for download, I don’t have much intel on the flash media carts, so I can’t judge that right now.

          1. They are going to be using games on memory cards, i.e., cartidges. They even had a display of what they would look like at E3. -___-

      2. DUMBASS ALERT! DUMBASS ALERT! WARNING, MAJOR TROLL IN THE AREA! To clear it up for people who think about believing anything this fanboi types…
        1. PSV uses a new proprietary physical memory for games ALONGSIDE the PSN.
2.True, you can’t play your physical UMD unless you want to rebuy them on the PSN, IF they are on the PSN. If you bought any PSP game from PSN previously you can download them to your PSV.
        3. Sony spent a shit load of time and money fixing the PSN from the security breach. The PSN will not get hacked again.

  7. Seriously, imagine if by some miracle, the 3DS had launched with Smash Bros, Luigis Mansion 2, and Super Mario 3D Land? I guarantee it would’ve been an INSTANT success, with the best launch sales in history even at $250. Vita could launch with ALL it’s spotlight games at the same price, and it would not have sold nearly as well

      1. OMG THESE ARE ALL LITTLE KIDDIE GAMES! GROW UP AND PLAY SOME MORE MATURE TITLES! I LOVE NINTENDO BUT DON’T GO AROUND BASHING SONY FOR HAVING A MATURE AUDIENCE! ALL YOU GET WITH NINTENDO ARE RECYCLED CHARACTERS DOING DIFFERENT SHIT! LIKE MARIO KART, MARIO GOLF, MARIO SMASH, MARIO THIS MARIO THAT! I’M TOTALLY OVER THIS BY THE TIME I WAS 16! ALL NINTENDO GAMES ARE FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANNA SEE VIOLENCE. OTHER THAN THAT THEY’RE ALL MULTIPLATFORMERS. I’M SICK OF MARIO LUIGI YOSHI DONKEY KONG KIRBY EVERYTHING! ITS SO HORRIBLE HOW CHEESY THESE CHARACTERS ARE ALREADY! PS VITA IS 250 BUCKS! NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! AND PEOPLE WILL BUY IT BECAUSE OF THE EXCLUSIVE GAMING WITH A RANGE OF CATAGORIES. NOT JUST CHEESY CHARACTERS. WE HAVE CHEESY LIKE LITTLE BIG PLANET. THEN WE HAVE MATURE LIKE GOD OF WAR. AND EVERYTHING ELSSE IN THE MIDDLE. JUST GIVE IT A BREAK GUYS!

        1. damn, you give yourself a break. Your ALL CAPS RAGE! post certainly proved alot. There’s a good reason why Nintendo’s “Rehashed” franchises sell their systems, because they are of VERY HIGH QUALITY. Not that Sony’s franchises are bad, they are actually damn good, Nintendo has such a classic and Nostalgic base of franchises that it would be sin to stop making them. Sure you got your various Mario spinoffs and what not, but for vast majority of the time, when you buy Mario, you know you’re in for something good. I agree that Sony has nice and vast library, but calling Nintendo’s many, many flagship franchises CHEESY, HORRIBLE, and REHASHED is simply disrespectful.

  8. Isn’t the $299 the price tag of the 3G version of the Vita? Still not able to enjoy mobile games for being outside the phone manufacturers’ countries of choice, so I’m still wondering how they’re defeating both the 3DS and, perhaps, the Vita.

  9. I would have no problem buying the Vita for 249.99 dollards but i wonder if sony is gonna include other softwares or apps besides gaming on it (skype, mail, videos, etc…). This is why i can’t blame people that didn’t go all out for the 3ds, with all that capacity it should have been at least able to play videos like .mp4 or .avi at least so that i don’t have to pull out my phone to watch a vid while the 3ds is in my other pocket!

    1. Psp had skype so I expect vita to have it. Also by the looks of it, it will have an email feature between PSN friends. Also will have built in Internet, which can go on most mail service websites, as well as many websites used to watch video. Or you are able to download movies like on the psp.

        1. Well it is extremely misleading to constantly use the highest price of a product just to make a competing product look better.

It would be like a US citizen using the euro price for something (which is way more than US price) just to try and turn people away from it and have them buy their brand instead.

          1. “If people aren’t willing to pay $249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay $299 for Vita?”

            – Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour, Heavy Iron Studios

            1. I wasn’t. I would never purposefully insult Sickr. I have no reason to and I have nothing against him. It’s “Heavy Iron Studios” I have a problem with, because THEY’RE the ones who are spreading misinformation.

  10. Well, certainly $250 for the basic model is the better choice. Why? Well, because Sony confirmed during E3 week that gamers will not be able to sustain an online match over 3G. 3G will be there only to check leaderboards and to buy stuff online, not for online gaming as some people seem to assume. I know a lot of people will just buy the 3G model thinking that they will be able to compete online. Plus, we still don’t know if ATT will have a limit to how much data you will be allowed to use. For phones and tablets, the limit for the most expensive on is 2GB a month and then they give an extra 1GB every time you go over for additional costs, and 1GB every time from there with more additional charges. Downloading a game would be a pain with that.

    1. So is it ACTUALLY too intense for 3G, or will they be restricting online play on 3G because they want to keep it high quality and not hog bandwidth? Maybe it could be hacked to allow online play over 3G, they way they hacked iPhone 4 to FaceTime over 3G

      1. I think it’s because the 3G network is not as reliable yet. An online session for games such as Mario Kart (on the 3Ds if it had 3G) and maybe Killzone (on Vita) would require continuous connection besides the usual lag from the P2P servers, which is what games usually use (it’s cheaper). Plus, 3G can only go as fast as its range allows it, and if too many people share the same network, it’ll be a mess. So in short, yes, online play would be too intense. Wifi is the way to go for now since that’s only limited to what you have, but it’s more reliable.

    1. No it does not but that is because the controls for the system are different than psp. What they are doing though is updating all the psp games to work with vita (imagine metal gear solid Peacewalker with 2 analog sticks and maybe some touch screen action thrown in)

But anyway the psp good game list is very small (which is why the DS was better IMO) but those few good psp game were way better than any DS game. There are several people with 1000 hours online in metal gear portable ops/ops

        1. Well, he means that unless you bought those games off the PSN, you will have to buy them again from the PSN since Vita doesn’t support physical backwards compatibility.

  11. I’ll be buying one just like I bought the 3ds at launch. I’ll likely only get the WiFi one since 3G seems like an easy way to break your bank doesn’t matter which provider they chose. I’ll just turn the mobile hotspot on on my phone if I need it that much but I seriously doubt ill even use it.

  12. I would want the PSVITA but I can’t justify 250 bucks for a handheld. God that’s almost as much as all the consoles out!

  13. What a lot of you fail to realize is that the Vita isn’t comparable to the 3DS.
The 3DS was overpriced for the hardware provided and had a questionable launch line-up. Post-launch support has been laughable, and it’s looking like it’s not going to pick up before the year ends either.
Nintendo shot themselves in the foot for launching it at such a high price and expecting a gimmick to sell a system, but I guess it’s excusable given their overconfidence with the Wii.
First and foremost, the $299 Vita is for the 3G version. You’re standard wi-fi unit is going to set you back $249. On top of this, the Vita has significantly higher RAM capacities (if memory serves, it’s like 256MB vs. 96MB), a 5-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen (versus the 3DS’s inexpensive resistive touchscreen on the bottom and 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen on the top), and bluetooth support. Add in social network support, rear touchpad, a second analog stick, and a more powerful EVERYTHING, and you’re getting your $250 worth of equipment.
Nintendo priced the 3DS at $249 because of the buzz it generated. Sony priced the Vita at $249 because of hardware costs.
Nintendo, I love you-you were my first game console back in ’97-but until the inevitable “Lite” release and Gen VI Pokemon games, I will not buy into the 3DS.

    1. Close, but the 3DS has 128mb ram.

The vita has minimum 512mb ram.
They haven’t released the full number but they said that it will have as much if not more than the ps3. And speaking truthfully. 512 is a horribly low number too. The ps3 ram got outdated like 1 year after release. So nintendo is really in a bad way with only 128.

        1. No it was a rumor, saying that Sony lowered the ram because it was too expensive. Lol ram is one of the cheapest if not the cheapest part of a computer. Sony did say that it was only a rumor and they weren’t reducing the ram.

  14. i have looked at the vita and how games are done on it but i bought 3ds as it showed some games of interest and had some cool functions. vita not so much as no backwards compatibility for umd like pspgo plus nintendo’s 20 free games helps

  15. I like the 3DS and will get one maybe in a year or two when more games that interest me are released. But I love the PSV and will get one on launch day. Sony always has better games that I like…

and yeah… they totally forgot to mention that there are two versions of the Vita… they just conveniently chose to mention the more expensive one.

    1. That’s what I’m saying. I got nothing against the guy who runs this site, but come on, put a little stub at the bottom that says the vita is 250-300$. Half the people commenting here talking down the vita have no idea there is a 250$ one.

I mean if someone talks ish about the 3DS I make sure they know their facts. If your gonna hate, don’t make yourself look foolish.

  16. Oh god… the point in listing the highest price of PSV it’s obvious! Say you wanna buy a PS3 with PSmove vs. Xbox360 Kinect 250GB…. you will compare the two highest prices! no matter if you are a real kinect/move gamer or not… 3ds it’s a single model with vita being two…
i dunno… vita gives me the feel that’s for “gamesick people” and 3ds is destined to enjoy, free time… sony has made a lot of improve for the game industry but to be honest, they just take a competition model, upgrade it and sell it… they lack innovation…

  17. Well… aside from the 3D… exactly how different is the 3DS from the DS? It’s basically the same thing except it has 3D and way better graphics…

The Vita on the other hand has got the back touchpad which in my opinion can be much more beneficial than the original DS’ touchscreen. The same can be said of the PSV’s touchscreen which isn’t entirely dependent on a stick. Neither is the whole system dependent on the touchscreen and neither will Sony ruin some of it’s own games by making games that would otherwise be great, into total failures like Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, Dragon Ball Origins, and most notable of all… Star Fox. That game was completely ruined by the stylus only usage. It could’ve been great if they hadn’t strayed from tradition controls…

The two DS Zelda games were actually great and not total failures like I said before, but they felt that way because they both could’ve played much better had they used traditional controls. I had fun with Spirit Tracks, but using the stylus made it feel like more of a chore. I doubt if it had been anything other than Zelda, that I would’ve bothered to finish it. I just hope the 3DS isn’t entirely dependent on that stick again. I’m just saying… The PSP didn’t have that problem because it stuck with good controls, and so will the PSV I’m sure. The PSV also has dual analog sticks which I believe is a first in mainstream game handhelds. Games will definitely control much better on Vita than on 3DS.

    1. Despite the small differences with the DS, it still utilizes the duel screen and touchscreen functionality which made the DS handhelds what they are today.

I think what punkboy is saying is that whilst the Vita has a number of new things on it, none of them are really anything original and any where near as innovative as what the DS, DSi and 3DS have introduced to gaming. Many of the Vita’s functions are simply things the DS handhelds had (aside from the touchpad which seems really neat) but slightly modified similarly to how they added the Move controllers for the PS3 after the success of the Wii albeit not as obvious. Sony have never really done anything to innovate how we play games (aside from that icamera thing for the PS2) aside from upgrading the console. Just look at the evolution of the Playstation controller.

You state in your third paragraph that the two Zelda games for the DS were complete failures only to later on within said paragraph to state otherwise. Little confusing. However I highly disagree with your statement on the games control scheme as quite frankly I found it to be extremely enjoyable and innovative along with many other people. The game was a success and received great scores from a number of gaming sites. The stylus allows for utilization of the touchscreen with more precision and essentially allows for more depth to the controls in a game as opposed to using your fingers. Imagine playing a game like Spirit Tracks with your fingers.

P.S What is with all these Sony fans as of late posting on the latest articles on my nintendo news?

      1. ^ This.

Also, the circle pad is a huge jump forward in Nintendo’s handheld products, the 3D camera is just so awesome, and the online greatly surpasses the DS’. Streetpass is pretty awesome as well, I love PokéDex 3D, and the eShop is getting better and better with each new entry. Prices are decent.

  18. i dont even play with my iphone -.-

I don’t know why people says iphone & android will take over handheld place! The games are shit & just for time passing, plus I like sony but I always love nintendo’s games, & I think PSvita is over priced ._.!

  19. I have no problem with 250$ for the Vita. 300$ though… no. The only “addition” you’d get by buying the 3G model is wifi connection where ever you go. But you have to pay 50 extra bucks in addition to monthly payments to AT&T who is crap. My only fear is Sony catering to the people who buy the 3G model.

  20. NOT JUST CHEESY CHARACTERS. WE HAVE CHEESY LIKE LITTLE BIG PLANET. THEN WE HAVE MATURE LIKE GOD OF WAR. AND EVERYTHING ELSSE IN THE MIDDLE. JUST GIVE IT A BREAK GUYS! GROW UP WHAT ARE YOU? TEN? SONY IS OBVIOUSLY FOR OLDER PEOPLE LET THE KIDS PLAY THEIR GAMES AND PLAY SOME REAL SHIT FOR CHRIST SAKE! STOP BASHHIN SONY. I BOUGHT A WII FOR MY 5 YR OLD DAUGHTER I DON’T EVER TOUCH THE THING CUZ THE GAMES ARE FAR TOO CHILDISH FOR MY TASTE.

    1. No way an adult with a 5 year old daughter would scream, freak out, and type in Caps. Not everyone needs or wants violent games. Calm down dude.

        1. I did type in caps to catch the attention. Caps or not I have a point. Everyone has their own preference in gaming. If video games were only a bunch of kiddie characters id go crazy. Nintendo fans are so busy bashing sony while sony fans don’t think twice about bashing nintendo. I joined because I like nintendo but when I saw all of the hatred spewing from this site, I had to say something. Video game console consumers are the worst consumers in the world. They’re the only ones that want 2/3 of the industry to fail. My god. So what if sony has this and has that. If you don’t like it then just pay attention to what you like. Don’t wory. About another console if you’re already sold on the one you currently have. There are experiences that you’ll never get if you stay loyal to only one console. When it comes to exclusives nintendo may have all the mario and zelda on lock but sony has their own roster of excluive characters and games that are amazing. Btw , everyone is copying everyone! Its called technoligical advancement. Imagine if atari was the only one who developed video game consoles….nintendo wouldn’t be able to start making consoles because that’s considered copying. Or the umteen amounts of companies that use blue ray…..are they all copying? Or 3D tvs, radios? Its just taking current tech and improving on it. Just give it a break…if only the nintendo community were as lovable and peaceful as they’re beloved video game characters lol

            1. Both of you’re comments are hilarious, and you’re a Sony fanboy. You type in all caps in a immature rage. You contridict yourself by saying you love Nintendo but hate all their characters? What? Dude this is a Nintendo website. Of course there will be Nintendo fans on it. You’re an idiot to think otherwise. And the funniest part of you’re rage for me, was the Sony gamers don’t think twice about bashing Nintendo gamers. Go to IGN or other similar sites, Sony fanboys would bash Nintendo without a second-thought, as you do.

              1. I like nintendo to a point , just for fun to pass time. When it comes to hardcore gaming I prefer mature games . That’s my opinion . Nintendo games are just too childish at times. You have to be a complete nerd if you get a hard on for a new mario game. I’ve played both systems open minded. Its just facts. Sony games are for more mature audience. I’m. A brutal gameplay type Of guy and I can’t speak for the sony fanboys on ign. I can say that nintendo has always been a nostalgic pass time for me but I can only pay so much nintendo as it becomes kinda bland when I’m looking for a good intense gameplay

                1. What you just said makes no sense as a response to what I said. Fine, you’re a “intense” kind of gamer. I didn’t once address that because it’s irrelevant. There’s no need to rage about something you don’t like. You sound like a 5 year old throwing a temper tantrum. You can voice your opinion without saying “NINTENDO GEAMS ARE 2 CHILDISH AND I HATE THEM!!!!!”

                  1. Just because I caps lock doesn’t mean I’m raging lol and who cares if I were a 5 yr old gamer … id still be right. Lol just because someone rages doesn’t mean they’re not correct. Not once did I try to insult you or name call. So let’s keep it friendly and straight to the point. Don’t make me using caps something u can use to argue your point in gaming. Its irrelevant .

  21. Pingback: Nintendo!!! « My Life My Way!!!!!

  22. Although I’m not a Sony fan, I do admit the Vita looks like a very good console. And I doubt Any portable phone, Adroid, Apple product will EVER replace gaming in the life of a hardcore gamer, which the Vita is being advertised to.

  23. No matter how mature the games are, people are still going to look at you funny for carrying one around 3ds or psv.

  24. that’s a good point. Why would people pay more for less. That why Sprint has the Evo 3D, to go up against Nintendo.

  25. 299 dollers in uk money is about 170 pounds , so i went to order from us as its 299 pounds in the uk and it says im not alowed to buy from the us O-o , few months back i saw a neat portal hoodie and went to order it from another website , again us only .. geez you would think the us would want to sell its commoditys to the world to make money not stop people buying goods from there :S anyway im not going to buy a vita untill i can buy it for 299 dollers not 299 pounds which in us money is i dunno about 600 dollers or something sorry sony but my money is going towards 3ds which is way way cheaper to get in the uk vs vita prices , if my predictions are right vita will sell poorly in the uk untill they fix the prices rest of the world probebly sell well
