Morgan Webb, co-host of gaming show “X-Play” believes that Nintendo will have a difficult job convincing people that the Wii U could be a better gaming experience than the iPad. Webb also went on to criticise the fact that Nintendo has decided to stick with the Wii brand for its next generation console.
“Nintendo has an uphill battle this year. It’s really a branding problem. I think a lot of people are still confused about the Wii U. They’re going to have a hard time convincing people that this could be a better gaming experience than the iPad.”

Why do these clowns feel the world wants or even own any of the apple products… Despite what these iSheep may feel… we all do not want an iPad or an iPhone for that matter. Plus core gaming experience is still overwhelmingly done on console gaming machines and PC.
I want an iPhone. That being said, I see an iPhone as a tool, not a toy. Same with the iPad… If I want to play games, that is what my PSP, 3DS, Wii and PS3 are for. If I want to get work done, that is what my Mac and related Apple products are for. One is not a replacement for the other and it drives me nuts that there are people who think they are.

Yeah, exactly. I have an iPod touch and wouldn’t mind having an iPhone or iPad. It’s pretty convenient to have a portable device for you to check your e-mail, browse the web and listen to music on, as well as many other features, and even play an occasional game of Tetris or Angry Birds. But it wouldn’t ever be able to replace my 3DS for gaming.
I’m not sure this is so much a nod to apple as a blast to Nintendo. If a tablet is a better gaming system than a console, you know something went horribly, horribly wrong.

You don’t have to play PH and ST purely on touchscreen. The buttons are an alternative. But touchscreen with a pointer and touchscreen with your fingers are very different. I don’t know if you can use a pointer on an iPad or other tablets, but if you can’t, then Wii U is the better choice. Dunno if Wii U has a pointer, but it has buttons, and if I’ve not misunderstood, the buttons will be the used more than the touchscreen.

This is why I don’t pay attention to G4 anymore. They seem to have this…thing…against Nintendo nowadays. Any media outlet that focuses heavily on games should be open and unbiased towards all aspects of gaming. I don’t think G4 is like that anymore.
And why is everyone convinced the WiiU is just like an iPad or Xbox Smart Glass. Each one of those is unique and has their strengths/weaknesses. And to be honest, I don’t like the idea of tablet computers taking over gaming (which I don’t think they will for a long time) because I don’t want to have to shove out 300-500 every couple of years for the newest model.

It’s a ‘fool me once’ situation, and depending on how you still feel about the 3DS, some may be looking at the WiiU and thinking they won’t be fooled a third time. The Wii dmaged Nintendo reputation for Quality and fan boy service, and while I’m very optimistic about WiiU and e3 I dont blame anyone who thinks like this.
But as for this nonsense with the I Pad, give me a break! Hardly anyone can make a profit on the I Pad, most bearly use them for gaming and it’s my understanding the iPad depending on brand is currently a clear 100-250 dollars more expensive than what we think the WiiU will be.
People may play games on and IPad, but they are mostly simplistic games puzzle games, it a totally different offering and totally different pricing. People might indeed buy a ipad to play scrabble and bejeweled, but that’s not the main reason you buy any console, such things are cheap additions to the main course, and there is nothing stopping Nintendo filling the eshop with such titles. However I doubt anyone is dying to play next gen games on an Ipad.

In part, I agree with this guy. Nintendo need to change the name of the Wii u. Firstly, as he said, people are going to get really confused, they will think it is a new controller for the Wii like the balance board, Wii motion plus, etc…. Even if people understand that the Wii u is a new console, the name suggests that it is not very different from the Wii and lots of people will think that it is a shiny Wii with a new controller and some new games.
Secondly the “hardcore” gamers will not want to buy something with the word “Wii” in it’s name. If Nintendo want it to sell to the Xbox-loving-call-of-duty-playing fans then it can’t be called the Wii u. Even if it has the worlds best graphics and the most violent games on record, serious shooter-loving gamers will not buy it, because it’s name makes it sound like a happy rainbow console.
As for the part about needing to convince people that its more fun than an iPad, it should be easy enough, as long as they supply tons of those cheap, crappy games that people love to play on their smartphones and tablets.

I could see your point if Elder Scrolls games were more like Zelda games, with only a handful of items at any given time, but managing the kind of huge inventory of an Elder Scrolls game would be a bit ridiculous. people would be constantly getting their asses handed to them while trying to switch to the specific set of enchanted armour they made specifically to resist x type of magic. Combine it with something like Skyrim’s Kinect voice controls or just use the Wii U controller for a favourites list and it could work, but it’s still not really suited to that kind of game.
Then why are “core” companies like sony pushing motion controls with the move, pushing 3d and adding gimmicky touch screen controls to there vita games. There is no reason to have touchscreen controls in uncharted or resistance.

I really don’t think they are going to be able to attract the market that plays iPad games back to the Wii U. The people who play those games aren’t looking for an in depth experience, and really, products like the iPad is the perfect product for them. What I think the real challenge for Nintendo will be is attracting back the actual gaming audience that they drove away with the Wii. I know a lot of people are going to need convincing that Nintendo can still produce an in-depth experience. They will likely need to update a lot of their franchises. A lot of them are becoming repetitive, stale, boring and irrelevant.

iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch could give Nintendo’s DS a challenge with the bluetooth addition of standardized buttons that attach to the device much like the controllers we use today. Why would anyone compare a gaming console to an iDevice? An iPad is a lifestyle device, and not primarily used for gaming. The Wii U controller works in conjunction with the TV, giving it more versatility that than iPad in terms of gaming. I don’t think Nintendo will have any problems.

I own an iPhone…sold the iPad cause it was same experience but larger n useless really compared to phone. I prefer to game on my mac or the 3ds. I even sold my 360 as i just use onlive, and wireless controller. same experience as 360 n cost way less. console I think have huge fear not due to iOS or iPad but steam n onlive gaming services. Nintendo started off as a company making card games, and Bill Gates’ first ever computer program, long before Windows (incidentally, Microsoft didn’t make computers, they made software for computers), was a version of Tic Tac Toe that could be played against the computer.
This was in 1968. Nintendo didn’t even manufacture the first Game and Watch until 1980. So, technically, the founder of Microsoft was making video games over a decade before Nintendo. Do your research before making idiotic, fanboyish statements.

I’m usually not a fan of these shock-appeal headlines, but this one actually highlights an aspect other sites haven’t: The Secound Sentence.
There’s certainly an issue with consumer confusion (to be fair, though, most successor consoles have that problem, though reuse of the Wii brand doesn’t help here), but I’m sure most anyone on this page will tell you they’d rather be able to play with both a screen and physical buttons/analog than be restricted (and that’s if the player is even fine with a screen, which would mean they don’t like either.)

The Wii U, Nintendo’s successor to the best-selling Wii, will meet its biggest audience to date at the Electronic Entertainment Expo – or E3, as it is known to video game enthusiasts around the world.
The trade fair offers fans a glance at the hottest upcoming titles in gaming, along with a look at the hardware heading their way. This year, only Nintendo has committed to showing off a new console – though rumors persist that Sony or Microsoft could offer teasers of next-generation platforms.
Nintendo gave the world its first look at the Wii U, which includes an unusual tablet controller, during last year’s event. This year, additional details about the device’s capabilities will be revealed, and show attendees are expected to get their hands on it for the first time.
The new console, which is expected to arrive in time for the holidays, is being released at a critical point for Nintendo. The Japanese video game giant reported its first annual loss in 2011 as it slashed prices for its Wii and 3DS consoles in an effort to boost sales.
More importantly, the company faces doubts on Wall Street and beyond about whether consumers will line up for the new console the way they did for the Wii. Consoles dedicated exclusively to gaming have lost favor in recent years as offerings from Microsoft and Sony have emphasized the ability to play high-definition movies, stream music and socialize online.

In coming years, there are likely to be other ways to play games on televisions. Internet-connected TVs are becoming more popular, which could allow people to stream or download games directly on the screen. And Apple could allow software developers to write applications for Apple TV, which would make it a major platform for games.
While the Wii U is expected to offer some of those features, including content streaming and downloadable titles, it remains to be seen how competitive it will be in the new landscape.
“There’s a lot starting to happen right now that’s making people think about what the next generation of consoles is going to be,” said John Davison, vice president of programming for video game news site GameSpot. “The Wii has sort of disappeared off a lot of people’s radar completely. It was all the rage back in 2007, 2008. But we’re back to the core gamers being the most important thing again, and Nintendo just isn’t part of that conversation.”
Analysts say Nintendo is an underdog heading into E3. But it does have some persistent advantages. Many titles exclusive to its platform, including “Super Mario Bros.,” “The Legend of Zelda,” “Donkey Kong” and “Metroid,” are among the most popular and best-selling in the history of gaming. And a new Mario game is expected to be shown at E3 this year.
Nintendo also has successfully courted large third-party developers, including Electronic Arts and Ubisoft, to develop for the Wii U. Third-party support has historically been a weak spot for Nintendo.
“It would be fair to say that right now, Nintendo has a lot of benefit of the doubt from the development studios in the industry, but it has not yet captured hearts and minds with the Wii U,” said Joe Minton, president of DDM, a talent agency for game developers. “There’s a big reservoir of love for Nintendo in the game developer world, for all the properties they’ve created and the way the Wii opened up people’s eyes for whole new ways to make games.
“People want to believe it’s going to happen again. But there’s a lot of trepidation.”
Nintendo, which will present the Wii U at E3 on Tuesday, declined to comment for this article.
Microsoft, Sony there too
While Nintendo has the most buzz heading into E3, plenty of other companies will be fighting for the spotlight. Microsoft and Sony have scheduled presentations for Monday and are expected to discuss additional media offerings and online services for their consoles.
Both companies have denied that they will showcase next-generation consoles this year. But the Wall Street Journal reported last week that Sony is readying the PlayStation 4 for next year, raising speculation that it might offer a teaser at E3.
Once the giants reveal their plans, attendees – who include the press, game buyers and others from the industry – will have three days to see the upcoming titles up close. Highly anticipated games scheduled to be on display include the next installment of the “Call of Duty” franchise, “Borderlands 2,” “Resident Evil 6” and “Tomb Raider.”

I have an iPhone 4S. Had it since it came out. I never play games on it, other than DrawSomething and the occasional game of Amazing Breaker or Solitare. It’s just not a gaming-heavy device.
It’s great for in-a-pinch moments (waiting for the doctor, for a flight, playing turn-based gimmick games like scrabble), but it definitely does not replace a console and/or PC. Nor will it (or the iPad) ever. They are two completely different platforms.
These people are ridiculously ignorant to the big picture of gamer culture.
LOL IPad, I get a better gaming experience out of my desktop. I really don’t see the gaming appeal to the IPad, it’s just big cell phone games -_- I can’t even think of a game the IPad offers that can stack up to something like Ocarina of Time.
Who can tell me how I would legally download music without having to use iTunes? I have no intention of ever supporting Apple. I want to pick up an Android smart phone soon but am worried about how I would get songs on it without using iTunes or being a filthy thief.
