First Unreal Engine 4 Game Will Ship Next Year

Epic president Mark Rein has confirmed that the first game which utilises Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 will launch next year. Rein wouldn’t elaborate on which game will use the new engine, but he expects it to set a benchmark for other games visually. Epic has yet to confirm whether or not Wii U will support Unreal Engine 4.

“I don’t know. For sure something next year, I just don’t know exactly when.”

“It’s certainly important for us to have our flagship game. That’s the game for which we develop the engine. Gears of War was the game for which Unreal Engine 3 was developed, and so shipping that has a huge significance for licensees and for us. I think, for Unreal Engine 4, there’ll certainly be a couple of games.”

    1. Hmmm next year you say… I wonder which engine is being used for Zelda, Metroid and Starfox. Its safe to say at least one of those three will be coming out next year (the same time frame Epic speaks of). Time will tell.

      1. Did you know that Retro Studios had developed Metroid Prime and it was powered by an Unreal Engine?

        1. They call me... Mr. Vain

yeah, i read about that. I went back to play through Prime again. and it DID look like Unreal graphics

        2. It was running on Unreal engine 2.5, or just heavily modified Unreal Engine 2. so Metroid Runing on UE 3 is more of a possibility than it Runing on UE4

its still a great thing though cause Retro Does Magic.

      1. That’s just for starters. I’m sure either their first or second party developers will jump the resolution to 1080p in the near future, Shadowfan. For now, having games running in 720p HD at 60 fps isn’t all that bad.

      2. Do you think a 2D Mario game needs 1080p? It is wasted development time, because the naked eye can hardly see any difference between 720p and 1080p, and for god’s sake, it’s a 2D Mario game, a Pikmin game, and a launch game (A introduction game to the system, if you will.), they don’t fucking need 1080p.

And besides, haven’t you seen or heard of AC3 running 1080p and 60FPS on the Wii U, and that’s with the GamePad, now imagine the U’s capabilities with the Pro controller.

      3. Nintendo said that their “first party launch games” will be 720p and 60fps. Third parties can do what they want and run them at 1080p, but just limit gamepad functionality.

It would make sense for Nintendo to at least make their initial games very gamepad heavy to demonstrate what it can do to other developers.

        1. Obvious troll is obvious.
One thing I don’t get about you lame trolls is, why are you wasting your time on a Nintendo specific page? I guess a child/teenagers has all the time of his life, or a fat unemployed basement dweller.

        2. Wow, what we have here? An other who doesn’t have a social life so wastes time acting like a retard on the Internet? What a wonderful life do you have, sir.

    1. Same, sure there is a few minor changes like the lighting, physics and textures but overall its just Unreal Engine 3 on steroids

    2. The thing here is that UE3 required 4 GPUs (600$ each) to pull visuals like the ones seen in the Samaritan Demo.

UE4 only needed 1 GPU, and we got better visuals than the ones seen with UE3.

  1. Well, I’m no expert, but let’s use some logic here. If a game that uses the Unreal Engine 4 is coming out next year, then it’s safe to assume it’s coming to current gen consoles (PS3, Xbox), correct? If the Wii U has equal or more processing power than the other consoles (to be determined), then I think it’s safe to assume the engine will run on Wii U just fine. I don’t see why it shouldn’t. Correct me if I’m wrong?

    1. yeah xbox360 is going forward 2 years atleast and ps3 too microsoft and sony made huge losses on those so they extend their lifes so that they make profit from the software

    2. No need to be corrected. I agree with you on your comment. if Epic Games were to have games running on Unreal 4 on PS3 and X360, it’s a definite no-brainer that they’ll games running on Unreal 4 on the Wii U as well.

      1. Epic would not do that, they expressed their hate towards the PC before. They aren’t the Epic that used to make Unreal Tournament anymore.

    3. The current gen is most likely not going to run it, considering the fact that this was a sub-HD generation of console, that should make a imagine in your head of the power of the PS360. It is much more likely that it’ll come out for the Wii U and PC. And I think that will be the case. I just think that Epic would just wait for MS/Sony to release their consoles, before releasing a major game.

    4. Well they did confirm that iPhones could still run Unreal Engine 4 so I don’t see why current consoles and the Wii U wouldn’t be able to run it

      1. iPhones? Can you give me the link, I think you meant Unreal Engine 3, no? I don’t see smartphones using UE4, they’re still not up to console power, they will be in the future, but not yet.

        1. Your right, I think I heard someone say that Tim the CEO of Epic saying that the iphone up to the next gen consoles can run Unreal Engine 4, it might have been UE 3.5 I’m not sure

        2. He’s right, even iphones can run it. The thing about the UE’s is that they are extremely scalable. They can be scaled down to work with almost every device.

    5. Logic does not know you my friend.

you seem to forget that PC’s also Run Games, and quite better than Consoles. So for all we know Its not even coming to a console and it’ll be a PC exclusive.

    1. Actually that would be with the tablet controller, without you’d get 60fps with the Pro controller

      1. They call me... Mr. Vain

no no no no no, you got it mixed up, Wii U games will run 60 FPS WITH the Wii U Gamepad. If your using 2 Gamepads, it will run 30 FPS.

          1. How, it doesn’t have a screen, nor does it have a accelerometer, nor a gyroscope. It’s just a traditional gamepad. I think you got it mixed up. Devs and Nintendo had already mentioned that the GamePad heavily taxes the hardware, I don’t see how a traditional gamepad could do the same.

    2. Actually, the Wii U will have most games running at 60 fps. Just because they (especially third party publishers and developers) run their games running at 30 fps doesn’t mean it’s considered final unless otherwise. Double standard.

  2. It’ll run it, I’m calling it. Think about it, even if Sony and Microsoft were to announce their next gen consoles next year, they wouldn’t be ready to release their consoles by the end of the year, and the game is said to be released next year. The only possible contestants to the UE4 game would be: 360, PS3, Wii U, PC. You can cross out 360 and PS3, because they probably won’t have the power to run UE4. So it’s either Wii U and PC, or PC. I’m thinking that Epic wouldn’t just release a game exclusively for the PC, they hate piracy too much. And they have been praising the Wii U too much to just let it down just like that. There are just WAY too many hints towards Wii U running UE4. Why else should they deny Keighley’s statement that it won’t run UE4. I’m sure that the mystery around the Wii U using it or not, doesn’t affect Epic’s financial status at all. So why should they just deny such a statement?

    1. I agree with you there, Sony and Microsoft can’t afford to spend billions upon billions of dolars on next gen consoles

        1. Eek, not looking too good on Microsofts end, Sony looks okay but that big drop is just discouraging.

I’m thinking the next gen consoles from those two will be only on par with Wii U

          1. I think they will be better, but because they’ll probably release their next consoles in 2014. 2012 hardware, maybe? But they could just make it on par, it depends on if they want to make consoles that make them lose money, and it wasn’t syuuch a great idea this gen.

            1. Well if the rumours are true then Microsoft’s next console will feel the pain the Wii went through because it’s said to have kinect 2 as the controller, Playstation 4/Orbis is sounding promising but I think they’ll be on par with Wii U

              1. Kinect 2, Microsoft can just get out of the gaming business, I mean, look at how much they are losing! Sony can stay, if they can, they are said to have some serious financial issues, not just in their gaming business, in their other money sources too.

                1. I heard Sony’s TV part of the business is to blame. But yeah Microsoft is really letting itself go, the smart glass was just a terrible idea and kinect is just a failed attempt at stealing Nintendo’s casual market… didn’t really work

                  1. Yeah, I also read that their TV’s were the main reason. Well, SmartGlass was sort of a good idea, but not refined enough to be created into a product, that was just a stupid move on Microsofts part, I mean, who the fuck is going to use their tablet as a remote, continuing a movie is ok, but wasn’t that already a part of Netflix style sites? Not exactly Netflix of course.
And Kinect wasn’t that bad of a idea either, but again, they just used 2 cameras and a infrared camera, and called it a day. And also those attempts at creating hardcore games with the Kinect, uggh, just do what Nintendo did, and find a game that would actually benefit from the Kinect. Dance games certainly benefit, why not more of those? Casuals love them, and hipsters too. But at least they didn’t sink as low as Sony did, with their PlayStation Wii, sorry, PlayStation Move. And don’t you fanboys even start with your: ”But there is concept from the PS2 era, bla, bla, bla” Remember the PowerGlove, that was a concept in the NES era, and was a product in the NES era. I think the NES was a little bit earlier than the PS2. Even if the PowerGlove was terrible, it was still motion controls.

                    Sorrry, I kinda got hooked.

    1. Valve can’t count to 3, it’ll probably be a Half-Life prequel, just like the Left 4 Dead prequel that they are working on now.

  3. 1 year after its first presentation and we still stay here to discuss if WiiU has enough power or not…
Come on N, tell us the truth!

    1. I thought about it, and I remembered that Epic does NOT like the PC anymore. It will be on a console. I’m just not seeing Epic release a PC exclusive anymore, the days of Unreal Tournament is over, they thing PC is corrupted with piracy issues, which it is, but not that much that they can’t offer their products on it.

        1. That’s by Epic though, it won’t stop other developers using the engine to develop games on the consoles

        2. Weird, changing their minds? Let’s hope it’s not this game. I’d love the Wii U to be capable of UE4.

  4. if the leaked specs are final or wii U is about that, no way to support new engines.. 8 rops gpu is away to old and limited..

      1. They flirt 720p because Mario doesn’t need 1080p, it would be wasted development time. And Ubisoft already proved that AC3 runs 60FPS and 1080p on the Wii U.

    1. Relax stranger. There’s a greater possibility that the Wii U will run games powered by Unreal Engine 4. They’ve already tweaked the hardware under the hood especially the NFC technology, and so on.

        1. According to Cliffy B., they (including the CEO Tim Sweeney) are not impressed at the Xbox 8 and PS4’s tech specs and it wasn’t a quantum leap.

        2. you are acting like that sieg.relax i think wiiU will make it even it wont have mutch power.GAMEPLAY METTERS ONLY and History of the game

          1. Actually, I think it will have much power. I think this because of:
            1. Countless devs (Gearbox, TeamNinja, Epic, etc.) have said that the Wii U is a very, very powerful console. Only anonymous devs have said that it’s not.
            2. Ubisoft has reported that AC3 runs on the Wii U with 1080p and 60FPS, with the GamePad, imagine AC3 without the GamePad.
            3. Devs and Nintendo themselves have reported that the GamePad heavily taxes the console hardware, yet the console is capable of supporting 2 GamePads.

Is that enough for you? There are some more memories of the Wii U being powerful, I just have a vague memory of them, but I could research a bit.

      1. wow failboy wars are so lolz. i have all 3 current gen systems and i use all of them equally. Failboy wars are only started by poor ass teenagers who can only afford 1 system.

        1. not because they want it is because I have no money, not because he is a fanboy, I have a wii, and I would buy a ps3, its graphics, but I saw and knew wiiu has better graphics, also for control.

  5. Hopefully the Wii U can support it. I get the feeling the game he’s talking about is the next Gears of War. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Then he shouldn’t make a mystery out of it, the game was already announced. I bet it is on the Wii U. The system is capable of supporting 2 GamePads for gods sake.
