Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has commented on the Nintendo 3DS XL which was revealed last night. The Nintendo 3DS XL is a new version of Nintendo 3DS with 90 percent larger screens. The revised unit will go on sale in North America on August 19th at a suggested retail price of $199.99
“No other hand-held entertainment experience compares to the fun of Nintendo 3DS. With the launch of Nintendo 3DS XL on Aug. 19, consumers will be able to enjoy the great lineup of current and upcoming games on an even grander scale. Plus, Nintendo 3DS XL gives owners even more real estate on their screens to enjoy entertainment applications like Nintendo Video and Netflix.”

This is a day one purchase for me!
I’m with you all the way on that one. To me, that’s a perfect fit and it has a much better battery life than the original.
I wanted a second analog stick…
Yeah!Reggie forgot about the 3nd analogue stick!
nintendo is smokin crack

Five-hundred and Ninety-nine US Dollars. Five-hundred and Ninety-nine US D-eh… Whatever, can’t be bothered to go down the ‘I post this comment a million times’ route.
Not much at all….half an hour to an hour….that’s still not even close to the DS
unrelated to your comment, but here’s a video about the 3DS XL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt0b6UfEX5E&feature=player_embedded
now shut up, the lot of you
that thing is gonna flop like the PSP go.
>$200
>ugly ass prototype look
>no AC adapter included
i’ll stick with my regular 3DS.
Actually, an AC adapter is included in the US release. And no way will it do as poorly as the Go.
What a Go?
the psp go
Allright AC adaptor. Its still too big to fit in your pocket, no better resolution for the screen, no extra circle pad, barely better battery life than the original. Its just a shit cash-in
The question is, are things going to appear more pixelated / of poorer quality? As far as I am aware, the resolution remains the same between the 3DS and 3DS XL.
Thats what I was thinking.
You’re not going to lose any quality, nor is it going to become pixelated, the games will be able to fit to the screen size, because the games were made to fit large screens when they were being made.
Yea you will just get stretching and pixelation.
I hardly believe it, just watch on youtube the videos of 3DS that is in full screen by Nintendo, there is no difference…
Are you fucking kidding me? I just went to see SM3DL on youtube. It looks horribly, horribly pixalated
I don’t … do you have a 3DS? SML3D on 3DS is much better compared a video, but, watch on 720p full screen or 360p without full screen, is almost the same, that’s what I’m saying.
But the 3DSXL won’t have better resolution….
It’s not, and do not need. You are missing the point, even with a bigger screen, you won’t be able to notice differences between the two screens.
>stretching
>native resolution
LOL
I’d also be interested in knowing if the speaker enclosures have increased, like the DSi XL changed over the DSi.
The same problem with the DSXL is going to happen with the 3DSXL. All 3D games are going to look awful with the bigger screen
After checking the US price and seeing it’s only $30 more than the original, I’m struggling to see why it would be a problem to just include an AC Adapter…
It does come with an AC Adapter in America…
It’s coming with an adapter in the US,
You can also use the Dsi,Or XL or 3DS adapter.
If only it came with an AC Adapter in the US *diarrhea face*
Yes, that’s bad. I only have a 3DS now and if I sell it… I’m fucked.
It’s coming with an adapter in the US,
You can also use the Dsi,Or XL or 3DS adapter..
it is.
I want one, but all in black. ;__; Why black-silver combination?
Netflix is a little hard to watch on a 3DS IMHO, but I’m still not sold on a 3DS XL. Besides, I’d need to trade in my old 3DS to help with the cost, but I need to keep it on hand to transfer all my games.
Are you denying the fact the 3DS XL is 90% larger than the original?
And larger isn’t always better. Because it will never run games at native resolution. It will stretch them to fit the new screen.
In other words, you are denying, Winnie.
Ahahahahaha, what? It’s THE SAME resolution, just bigger pixels. So, native resolution, doh.
He means all 3D games are going to look pixalated like the DSXL
It will be the same resolution Duh.
but it will be streched sir like your forcing a GBA to play in DS HUGE SCREEN <<<(at that time)
you are*
I enjoyed watching Netflix on 3DS. But I ultimately deleted the app to make room for VC, DSiWare, 3DClassics and eShop games without having to purchase another SD Card. Just fill it with games.
I’d get one if there was a way to share my eshop downloads and balance between the two…..until then I’ll hold off
On a seperate note, Play.com have just annouced a price of £179.99 in the UK.
just put your 3ds sd card into the 3ds xl
That won’t work
Aw :(
Why?
Do you know if there will be another way to transfer all of your saved data/downloaded titles?
Isn’t it TRUE that your 3ds is linked to your Nintendo account? Doesn’t that make it possible to transfer your data via your account?
I don’t care about how it can make the games look grander, only whether it can make me a toasted sandwich and steam press my undies?
I think the bigger screen won’t do much for the resolution but I do think it will help with some of the lag issues in games like Metal Gear Solid 3D, and also help with pixelation which has happened in a few games like Super Mario 3D Land and sometimes in Resident Evil: Revelations.
I’m buying the system, not because I think its a brand new 3DS but its because of the larger screen would help me read the text better in subtitles and also stop some of the eye strain I get when playing on a smaller screen due to my eyes being sensitive to small text
This translation from the 3DS XL Spec Sheet seems a little curious:
‘3.53 type [original 3DS] can be assigned respectively to 400 dot 800 dot the right eye-left eye (horizontal three-dimensional representation is possible)’
source – http://www.computerandvideogames.com/354888/nintendo-3ds-xl-full-technical-specs/?cid=OTC-RSS&attr=CVG-General-RSS
Here’s the 3DS Spec for comparison:
– Upper screen: Wide-screen LCD display, enabling 3D view without the need for special glasses. Capable of displaying approximately 16.77 million colors. 3.53 inches display (3.02 inches wide, 1.81 inches high) with 800 x 240 pixel resolution. 400 pixels are allocated to each eye to enable 3D viewing.
– Lower screen: LCD with a touch screen capable of displaying 16.77 million colors. 3.02 inches (2.42 inches wide, 1.81 inches high) with 320 x 240 pixel resolution.
What a fucking tool.
“Derp! Bigger screen so more Netflix and stuffs! Derrrr! Give us another $200 even though you just paid $180 last year for the same thing minus .8 inches or whatevs! DERRP!”
Step 1: Sell your 3ds at gamestop
Step 2: Buy 3ds XL with in store credit plus a bit of cash
not that hard to figure out.
No, just no. Selling your 3DS to gamestop of all places is fucking stupid. They would ask for your SD card and you would get almost no money on the deal. Don’t you dare try to justify purchasing this piece of shit
This.
trading it would be stupid if your an ambassador & bought a lot (even if one) content from the eshop.
why is it that you expect everyone who already owns a 3DS to buy an XL version? there can actually be people in the world without a 3DS who would want this version more than the original
Like me :P
Yep. Thats right folks. I STILL don’t have one. :3
They fact that they release it is stupid enough. Business wise, makes sense cause fanboys like the ones on this site that think Nintendo can do no wrong, will buy that shit up all day. Sensible people like me just shake our head and remember a time when Nintenso was about being games, not about adding or updating one thing every year and a half to get another $150 out of fanboys. It’s fucking sad.
Maybe somebody prefers a bigger screen, that’s all. It’s not a upgrade, it’s just a bigger 3D screen, buy it who want, that’s not an obligation.
You don’t need to buy it, it’s the exact same 3DS with bigger screen, can you understand this?
Does anyone else think in Reggies voice when they read what he says
I knew this was coming eventually. It’s EXACTLY why I didn’t buy a 3DS when they first came out. Hooray for patience!
Same here. But honestly I don’t know if I’d get this. I can’t help but be a bit ticked that they made it so ugly and for some reason didn’t think to put a second stick on it. I guess they want to save that for the next update…
Which will be in 6 months. Maybe even before Christmas, the way they’re releasing theses stupid things.
I can’t believe that Nintendo will do a mess with CPP because of 3 games…
THe only way you get the AC adapter for the 3DS XL is to buy it sepreatly from the system itself. I like the fact of the bigger screen and the 4BGB SD card but I liked the glossy look and I didn’t care for the plastic look and I don’t like it on the 3DS XL. They said the 3D graphics have improved but we will see…
I want the XL “mainly” because of the plastic look. The glossy material attracts dust and grease more than any surface there is!
I’ll stick with my 3ds. No point in the upgrade
Does anyone know if the bigger screen makes the 3d look better?
no, it will make games look worse with all the pixalation
Wtf
Don’t know about you guys but I’m happy that my original 3DS will be technically superior to this model when I eventually get Nyko circle pad pro as it will have
-two circle pads
-better battery than the XL (I know the XL has better battery on its own but I highly doubt it could surpass x3 original batterylife)
-not a burden to carry around (have fun XLers)
-games will look better as not streched to the extent of the XL
I think I’ve proved my point.

Best comment so far
You do realize that the Power Grip Pro will make the system significantly larger? It will give it a width and depth equal to if not greater than the XL. You will need to keep it in that large case if you want the extra battery life.
Also, games will not look “streched” [sic] as it has the same resolution.
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com//wp-content/uploads/multi/2012/06/nykoL.jpg
Yeah, that’s significantly larger *Sarcasm*
Yes, yes it is. Maybe not to you, but I guess your pocket space isn’t at a premium.
But its nowhere near as large as the 3DS XL
Also, things tend to look sharper on a smaller screen (compare DSi to DSiXL) hence that stretched look
why the hell dint nintendo announce this at E3?
Honestly I think the XL is catered to the older crowd. And for you guys who go: “LOL. NINTENDO IS LIKE: ‘GIVE US $200 FOR THE SAME THING.’ HERPA DERPA.” … You know that Apple is doing the same thing, adding an iPhone 5 soon and the iPhone 4 looked no different or had anything different than it’s previous model.
definitely getting one

I do not see nothing wrong with a bigger version of the 3DS. This is only helping people who need a bigger screen so how is this bad?
I had a DSiXL, and most of the games I owned were extremely pixelated. ESPECIALLY Kingdom Hearts and some of the older games the DS made. I hope they fix this issue. As for sound, I dunno the 3DS sound seems ok with me. The only thing I’m concerned about is the big fat pen I hope they don’t make for this XL. That thing was uncomfortable. Thank god they made a smaller, more reasonable stylus included.
I have the 3DS already, but I WILL get the 3DS XL, as I had a DSi and then got the DSi XL
I’m a little annoyed by this to be honest, cos this’ll be my third 3DS. My first one stopped tracking the date, so it says I played Mario 3D Land on 1/1/2011. Got rather annoying. At least I’ll be able to transfer my stuff again (though I think you can only do this 5 times ever, so they better not release ANY more 3DS systems EVER).
I absolutely LOVE my DSi XL though, and really hated the smaller screen of the 3DS. It was hard to adjust to the smaller screen. Though, I can’t say I understand where people saw the “stretched” look of the DSi XL, cos it looked pretty much the same either way. The 3DS has a much higher resolution though, so like a TV, it’ll likely look good either way.
i don’t know why people say the original 3ds is 3 hours minimum. so, that means the 3ds xl is only an half hour longer. that is WRONG! the original is 2.5 to 5 hours of battery life. so, this 3ds xl is an hour to hour and a half longer.
also, i called nintendo, they said that i will be able to transfer everything to the 3ds xl from the original 3ds, including my friend codes. so, we have nothing to worry about with that.
But for those of us who say, bought the 3ds when it first came out before it’s price drop from the $200 to the $100 something, i’m expecting a bit more from this one. Especially in the trade-in area. Hopefully Gamestop acts right.
