Third-Party Games More Expensive On Wii U

Online gaming publication CVG has noticed that third-party Wii U games all show a significant mark-up when compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. The publication spoke to an analyst who concluded that the premium price tags are commonplace for new consoles. Popular titles such as Assassin’s Creed 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are around ten pounds more expensive than their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts. Will this put you off purchasing third-party games for Wii U?

    1. Not all. For example:

Just Dance 4 just released for $39.99 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 new. However, on the Wii U it will be $49.99.

But generally, yes, the SRP for most games on the Wii U is $59.99 which is the same as PS3 and Xbox 360.

      1. Not to mention Mass Effect 3 coming out for Wii U at $59.99 whereas a bundle of the three games will be out for Xbox 360, PC, and eventually PS3 for the same price. :/

    2. It is a marketing, media scheme to raise prices in video games. First they’ll try it there, next, they will here. Fuck greedy ass people that’s why the price of everything goes up. But yes, they are still 59.99 here in America.

  1. Wait a second pay extra for cheap ports wtf the wiiu versions were by far the cheapesr to develop there ports of existing games what a rip off

    1. Oh really? You stupid bro? Most of these ports are the DEFINITIVE version of the game. This applies to AC3, FIFA 13, ME3, Arkham city, Tekken Tag 2, and if you can’t see that you are a fucking moron.

        1. Consoles I own : Xbox 360, PS3, WII, PS2, XBOX, Gamecube, Dreamcast, PSX, GBA sp, Mega Drive, N64. Yeah sure I’m a fanboy moron. I’m a fanboy because i state the truth? idiot.

      1. But it has been stated that bringing games to the Wii u, even with the additions and stuff, has been fairly easy, and even pretty cheap according to a Ubisoft statement a while back. They said it cost them less than a million dollars to port their multimillion dollar games or something like that, so it’s easy to develop for, so, even being technically better, the development cost hasn’t been all too much to worry about so the game cost shouldn’t really require a higher price. Whatever, all $60 for me, so I’m good

        1. It doesn’t matter. The price you pay is for the complete product : initial development + port + bonus content. With that logic, only one copy of each game in the world should cost more thant the price of a DVD and a printed boxcase…

        1. Wonderful goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff perivous to and you are just too excellent. I actually like what you have acquired here, really like what you are saying and the way in which you say it. You make it entertaining and you still care for to keep it sensible. I cant wait to read much more from you. This is actually a wonderful web site.

    1. Eh, not really. Unless they completely overhaul the game, the Wii U is only really getting just a few more perks. Like the mushroom mode in tekken. Not really that big a deal, just kinda a bonus mode. It’ll probably be used as much as the special rules modes for smash bros, which I can say most people I know just haven’t cared for. Nice to have but not completely game changing, like how zombiu is changing the game. They really just moved maps and menus to the second screen for the most part. So yes, the games are the definitive versions, but not really worth a mark up considering they’re only moving where the content is held from pause menus to the always on gamepad menu. They’re doing things differently, but overall it’s still the same game. Wii U will get virtually all the previous dlc free, but a lot of these games are a bit old, so they need that to give people an incentive to get the games, even though they’re paying full price for games that have been out a while

  2. Looking on Amazon UK ZombiU, Assassins Creed 3 and Black Ops 2 are £50 instead of the regular £40, I was hoping this was a place holder and they would drop the price closer to the date but now I’m guessing they won’t.
I refuse to pay £50 for a game so I’ll either wait for the price to come down or just buy them for the PC, 360 or PS3.

    1. I bet you look forward to the 1 year when PS4 and 720 replaces the PS3 and 360 and the prices for all games will be 50£… Just saying.

      1. So what, because it will become the norm it means I have to be okay with it?. No, It’s ridiculous how much Nintendo have been shafting us on the exchange rates lately. $60 = £50 for a game and $300 = £250 for the system.

        1. It’s not Nintendo shafting us its the companies setting there own prices because eu is split countries Nintendo of Europe can’t price point like noa can.

    2. Well if you really want Zombi U, just get the premium Zombi U package. Comes with a controller pro too. Makes sense for the extra 40 quid on top of the regular premium package.

  3. Makes sense.
WiiU is a new platform, requiring additional effort to code unique features into the game to maximize the gaming experience of Nintendo fans.

If these were simply ports, the price should be the same, however these are not ports. They are different versions of a multi-play game, and the WiiU version takes a little more time & effort.

    1. This means 2 things. A= it’s shit for someone like me who wants all the wiiu versions lol. And B= the common person in England will think ”duuuuh this cost more it better!!!!”.

PS3 games were all £50 when they came out though and are now £40.

So meh , its gunna hurt my wallet a bit :S

      1. Once the Devs have some WiiU development under their belt, we should see a price drop…

Any idea how long it took 360 and PS3 prices to drop?

    2. Well, the same could be said for the PS3 since that has a different type of architecture. It took third parties really until now to be able to make the games run as smoothly on that as the 360 AMD some still don’t port over well. The cell processor works completely different from the typical pc or 360 or now the Wii U. So yes, they’re adding stuff, but it’s also an easier port, so they’re able to add stuff

  4. My son is getting this for the Xbox on the 30th while I have to wait until the 18th to pick up the U’s copy. Question I have is, should I ground him from his game for 3 weeks? I think it’s one if those few given rights I have to abuse.

    1. You should suspend his allowance for some time to pay for the price difference ;)

Don’t thank me, I know I’m an evil genius.

    1. You sound like my Grandman XD!!!!! Respect!!!

In my day N64 games were also ridiculously expensive! it was a birthday , christmas or a one off thing , not a once every week or two like it is today !

      1. Once every week or two is NORMAL!? Sh*t son, I buy maybe a game every two or three MONTHS. When I was younger, it was just as you said; being more of the holiday gift thing. Considering everyone’s b*tching these days about wanting jobs, more pay, less cost, and all that cr*p, I think some people should try not spending senseless cash regularly like that. Far from it that every game in the world needs to be in someone’s possession. Geez… >_>’

    2. Hi there! I understand this is shomweat off-topic however I needed to ask. Does running a well-established website like yours take a large amount of work? I am brand new to writing a blog however I do write in my diary on a daily basis. I’d like to start a blog so I can easily share my experience and views online. Please let me know if you have any ideas or tips for new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!

  5. Eb Games Australia has call if duty at the same price, assassins creed join or die edition at the same price and darksiders 2 $10 cheaper then the rest. We still pay more for our games though :(

  6. You’re paying for the higher quality and extra functions that the Wii U brings to those games. It’s not a problem for me, I’m willing to pay more for a better product. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. This might make some people wonder if buying a Wii U is worth or not. We all know they come with exclusive content/features for Wii U, and even DLCs released for their previous counterparts for free this time, but the general public doesn’t. Unless they make a real good market campaign for their Wii U counterparts, they shouldn’t price it higher.

  8. Just use HMV and Asdas the games are 40 and 45 quid there i just went and asked :D NSMBU will be 45 there and same with Black Ops and zombie U

  9. i wouldn’t be surprised if the games for the next PS and Xbox would be $5-10 more than the normal $59.99 they have now. They (PS3 & Xbox 360) were the ones that originally set the price higher and Nintendo is barely matching the $59.99 price with the Wii U.

  10. I don’t get it. Are they talking about Europe? Some people here say the regular PS3/360 games cost £40 and Wii U ones cost £50. However, in the US, they’re all the same price. I would assume this is a region kind of deal and not something third parties, or even Nintendo at that, can control. Japan seems to be the same with games having prices all over the place.

  11. I see no problem here. You’re essentially getting a better experience on the Wii U considering that you can play with the GamePad, Wiimote, or Pro Controller therefore giving you 3 ways to experience the game if you so please. All this is in addition to all the cool features that are supposed to be with Wii U so I really am not too disappointed.

    1. Non-issue for America. I’ve got my games preordered @$60 a pop at GS. Only multiplat I got was black ops II, and its the same price as the other versions

  12. Here a thought, why do you think people will try to hack the Wii U and find a way to play copy game???? At the moment they can’t, cause the media support does not exist. We know the nearest media is the Blu Ray and the Wii U is not capable of read it.

Game on PC are now becoming realistically/rightly priced and good value for money, here a good example: Assassin’s Creed 3 can be found as little as £28 on PC while you have to pay £40 for PS3 (at least on amazon.co.uk) . The good thing is that on PC you won’t have to pay for the extra DLC and it will come down to price is the game has a lot of issue (like batman arkham city) in a year time and will cost £17 or £12 if not least.

Now I will hear: “but you can find Mario or zelda on PC?” damn right and they is nothing you can’t do about it. Nevertheless for third party game which are released on multi-platform that will be a different matter as people own several platforms and they will choose the game which offer the most value for money. I know that if I have the chose between assassin’s creed 3 between Wii u or Pc I know which version I am going to buy….
