Chris Marlow, one of the programmers behind the well-received Donkey Kong 64, has explained why the game required the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pack. Marlow says that the reason the game needed the Expansion Pack is due to a game-breaking bug that caused Donkey Kong 64 to randomly crash in the 4 meg only version. However, the game didn’t crash when used with the Expansion Pack installed. Rare couldn’t find a solution to the problem other than bundling the Expansion Pack free with the game – which apparently cost Rare a fortune.
LOL Nintendo is always failing
last time i checked Rare isn’t Nintendo?
Failing to support 3rd party thats why they left.
rare was bought by microsoft
No really?
i.e. they didn’t leave
it wasn’t their decision
nintendo never owned more than 49% of rare so when microsoft bought 51% of the company they had to sell their shares because realistically they no longer had any say in what platform rare was going to develop games for
that hard to understand?
u have aids
True, but only because Nintendo chose not to purchase the remaining shares. With Nintendo not interested Rare was sold to MS and Nintendo ended up selling their 49% of Rare to MS.
And it was MS that ran Rare into the ground, Nintendrone.
Nintendo doesn’t need third party games since Sony and Microsoft make VERY similiar consoles with the same games mostly so that means people who like those games will buy a Playstation or XBox, people who like games such as Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Metroid and Pokemon will buy a Nintendo console
that’s why you’re a nintendrone. You act as if Nintendo games are the greatest thing in the world yet they couldn’t even add online functionality to NSMBU or NintendoLand how pathetic.
i’m not saying that, i’m saying Nintendo has fans that will have to buy their consoles if they want to play Nintendo games. I’m sorry if i prefer Nintendo games and don’t like most fps. also why do those games need online features, iv’e played both and NSMBU is really fun and so is Nintendo Land which is a party game to be played with people sitting a couple inches from you not a couple hundred miles
why not add both, i hate that excuse like “oh you don’t have friends? well fuck you loser you can’t play Nintendo games you’re not cool enough” Thats a stupid attitude that Nintendo has because they are too cheap to pay for online servers
Get N or get out!
HA! “Get N or get out” I’m going to use that one. thanks.
You’re late or either being sarcastic!
You do realize that was the advertising slogan for the Nintendo 64, right?…
you’re making things up now, Nintendo wants their multiplayer to be played on the same console not from different consoles miles away, it’s a style that Nintendo likes and fans like it, sure online mode would be a cool idea but it’s not going to be a factor on how good the game is because it’s not gameplay. oh and not everyone has internet so at least the WiiU is still playable offline 24/7
sorry but nintendoland needed online… it would had sold mad systems.. nsmbu, however was 95percent pefect, only problem i have with it is the controller options. not being able to use gamepad to play normal 2 player game is retarded. boost mode is cool but i only have one wii mote, should have options for that.
I haven’t touched Nintendo Land in months cause it got boring playing by myself. No one I live with wants to play video games with me. An online mode for me to play with my friends would’ve helped a lot.
I agree with you here. Aside from the occasional play with my kids and nephews it stays tucked away pondering nintendo’s decision not to include a more robust online system for Nintendo Land. Instead of the random Mii population saying things like “This is so great!!” and “I can’t beat the donkey kong game!:(” Give us leader boards or fully online play and your games will stomp the competition.
Mario Kart Wii’s servers are still up and running.
yes! and so are the Smash Bros Brawl ones, in fact a Youtuber, PurpleRodri, does a weekly video where he uses the online mode to challenge fans on these 2 games
lol Smash Bros brawl servers don’t make me laugh
Yeah I know PurpleRodri! I can’t go on Youtube since recently my computer is failing to boot so instead I use a Windows CE computer w hich can’t play videos.
Camping fagg…
dude keep on spreading the hate, you are so entertaining.
Do you really need online?
couldn’t != didn’t (want to)
We sorry you dont have friends to play aside. Its So Sad you have to go online to get temporary coplayers.
and i am sure all your friends are dying to come over and play nintendo land with you
You would be surprised how much yes they are! Animal crossing candy game is an awesome multiplayer game!
sorry i didn’t realize you were still a tween
why is it you mock Nintendo for not having online on a couple games then mock the fact another one which is well more suited for online? shows you don’t have an argument
Ever think that you don’t need to play online?
that’s exactly what i was arguing, if you saw my earlier posts
We don’t add pointless features just for the sake of it…
We are not Xbots…
The only thing you seem to eliminate is your own IQ…
im fine playing it locally, i dont really care of online gaming unless is something lie FPS and games that you actually need to be away
Why the hell are you replying trolls…? Seriously even if there was an article “Nintendo gives money to drone Eliminator” He would come here and post something bad about them to troll people like you.
lol…. think u just killed dronekiller… thanks
How are they failing? They sorted the problem no matter how much it costs. Shows how amazing they were to their fans. Not their fault Microsoft bought them.
The article says Rare paid.
last time I checked Rare isn’t Nintendo
last time I checked you said that already
i wasn’t logged in then
too bad you’re still a troll
how am i the troll, you come to a website about Nintendo and start slagging it off , if anything you’re the troll
I want to just get this straight – somebody who more than likely prefers Microsoft over Nintendo is having a pop because one of Nintendo’s third-party developers had to give away a free expansion pack with one of their games? Anyone else see the irony?
No just you
Do you even know the definition of Irony? And is it just me or does your avatar kinda look like a penis?
No but yours does
sorry u were asking for that one
Lol, no worries, Penis. At least I’m not scared to show my face.
Well when you have your hands so deep in Microsoft’s pockets that you’re practically jerking them off, you don’t need a girlfriend…
… add that to the fact that you prefer to do people up the bum and it tells me more about you than anyone here wants to know!
Hmm, Penis and his homosexual henchman seems to have run away!
Now can we get back to discussing Nintendo please?
I see it quite clearly. Whether others do or not remains to be seen.
The fact that Rare decided to give away something for FREE to benefit their fans, and meanwhile we have a fanboy here (who would happily promote Microsoft) slagging Nintendo off over it. Hmmm…
I agree with this and every one of your previous comments. I also wonder why so many other folks are so afraid to show their faces on here. Come on guys, you have nothing to be ashamed of.
And no fucks were given that day
this has nothing to do with the post . just though id share it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMYso30L9zI
share it with everyone
OMFG I Cant stop laughing
HAHAHAHA. Internet winz!!!!!!
That was satisfyingly funny.XD
Second best thing that happened to me today.
Really funny.
And I thought it enhanced the graphics! PLACEBO! LIARS! I bought my DK64 with an expansion pack included! But then I could play Majoras Mask, too!
Seriously: Why does he tell us? Is this a hint for a new DK game on Wii U? Or am I too exited? :D
Wow, so Rare took a hit for the sake of the fans that they wanted to play their game?
That was really big of them. I’m sad that Microsoft swooped in and completely ruined them.
Of the top hundred games of all time in sales Nintendo is pretty much the majority of the list. The top 20 are practically all Nintendo. Nintendo has actually been a barometer for success the last few decades. If they weren’t why would Microsoft and Sony push to make devices like to the Kinect and the move to attract their audience .Let’s not forget after the msft bought Rare they haven’t made much and have by all accounts been run into the ground by msft.
Game crashing without expansion pack, doesn’t that mean the bug was related to a memory issue?
Most likely yes.
It certainly makes us, and devs (obviously), very grateful for today’s ability to patch software.
haha! I heard this news when I watched the Conker Commentary that was posted in the last post! 💋
This is why we’ll never see Donkey Kong 64 on the Virtual Console.
Absolutely right!
That’s a nice revelation!
thats awesome, this was probably my most played game as a child. me and my cousin would always play this pretty much every time we hung out.
there is no way that nintendo would have bundles it for free. the reason i got the game probably was because that was bundled in for free.
Interesting. Well it is clear that if it was a mandatory add on for the game then they had a big reason for it. DK64 was awesome, I miss those days.
I think Nintendo does need third party support, it helps a lot. (Reply to some comments)
Anyway, wow interesting, yet Banjo Tooie never needed an Expansion Pack and now I kind of see why this didn’t, just because of a random crash, and Rare cared for the fans for that. I thought it was because the game was very big. Nice to hear though, I would love to see another DK64 like game for DK someday too btw. :)
just before I looked at the draft of $7823, I didnt believe that…my… mom in-law woz like they say truly erning money part time from their computer.. there best friend haz done this 4 less than 12 months and by now paid for the morgage on their villa and purchased a top of the range Citroλn DS. read more at, Exit35.com
