NPD: Nintendo 3DS Is The Best-Selling Video Game Platform For Third Straight Month

Nintendo 3DS continued to build momentum in 2013 and finished as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the third consecutive month. A strong second month for Animal Crossing: New Leaf helped sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software increase by 14 and 45 percent, respectively, over the same time frame last year.

Highlights for the month include:

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold more than 150,000 combined physical and digital units in its second month on the market, bringing its lifetime total to more than 660,000 combined units.
  • The lifetime total for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for Nintendo 3DS surpassed 820,000 combined physical and digital units.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U for Wii U surpassed 830,000 lifetime sales of combined physical and digital units.
  • EarthBound launched July 18 for the Virtual Console service on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U and is off to a great start. Only two eShop titles, New Super Luigi U and Pikmin 3, generated more consumer spend in the same time period since launch.

Nintendo 3DS and Wii U fans will have a lot to play this summer and through the rest of 2013. Starting with the recently released Pikmin 3 (Wii U, Aug. 4) and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Nintendo 3DS, Aug. 11) and continuing with The Wonderful 101 (Wii U, Sept. 15), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Nintendo 3DS, Oct. 12), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U, October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U, November), The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo 3DS, November) and Super Mario 3D World (Wii U, December).

  1. Just like the Nintendo 3DS had a slow start and picked up later on, the Wii U will do the same. Patience is key in life.

  2. Proud owner of an Aqua blue, launch Nintendo 3ds. It was all worth. Just like the wait for Wii U games is going to be worth it

  3. Wii U upcoming third-party titles should have been cited in addition to Nintendo IPs.

I know we can find this information elsewhere, but it would be a plus for the post.

  4. Where are the non-ugly 3DS XLs in North America! I want to see better ones, the Red, Blue and Black have none of my interest. I’ve been waiting patiently for something sweet… Nintendo, are you listening?

Yea plenty of baby games to entertain the babies on their underpowered baby console.

    1. I’m buying all those games, so go fuck yourself with the “Nintendo Games are for Babies” thing. I play those games because I enjoy them and they are fun.

  7. Meanwhile the 3DS continues to be the best selling console worldwide for like almost two years. Oh yeah, that’s right. Positive sales only count and are relevant in the USA.

    *smh*

    Man we are arrogant…

  9. This is good news. The best new game coming out on Wii U is Super Mario 3D World. I am very surprised Capcom has not made Resident Evil 5 and 6 for Wii U. Dragon’s Crown should come to Wii U and 3DS. Also, Namco should make No Ni Kuni for Wii U and Tales of Vesperia, Graces, And Xillia.

  10. I bought my 3ds xl when the pikachu one came out, I’ve already played more games on it this year than on my xbox. I love what Nintendo is doing with the handheld space. The wii and the wii U just aren’t doing it for me. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they just dropped and went full 3ds/handheld.

    1. Which is your favorite console? Mine has always been the Gamecube. I know that the specs may not have been the best at the time, but boy did it have some great games! I also loved the main menu, the sounds were catchy and the design of the console was great!

  11. The only thing I’ve been doing on my 3DS is creating Mii’s and exchanging with Street Pass. My few 3DS games have been collecting dust.

  12. The 3DS is an excellent console and I’m glad to see it doing so well! One of the major advantages that it has, is that the 3DS has a huge selection. There are so many games that I still want to get from the console and more are on the way. Ocarina of Time 3DS and KH3D was a nice start for me, just need to keep on buying!
