Android Joins iOS To Surpass Nintendo And Sony Handhelds In Sales Figures

android_logo

A new report by App Annie reveals that for the first time, Android sales figures have surpassed those of “Gaming-Optimized Handhelds,” or all Nintendo and Sony handheld consoles. The report also found that, when combined, Android and iOS sales were four times greater than the combined sales of Nintendo and Sony.

These huge numbers further illustrate the current trend toward mobile gaming, which threatens to have a devastating effect on the handheld market shares of Nintendo and Sony. Although 3DS sales figures have been nothing short of robust lately, the growing market of mobile gaming certainly runs the risk of chipping away at Nintendo, especially when several games can be found on both platforms.

The App Annie analysis also showed a stark increase in mobile game sales coming from Asia as compared to the previous quarter’s sales, while sales figures for Gaming-Optimized Handhelds bounced back in Europe after being relatively low in last quarter’s report.

          1. no im talking about the fruit, and whats wrong with ios, I think its a cool os, android is ok too, but I love my bb10

        1. It is pretty stupid when you think about it. These guys have to make guesstiments on industry trends and they are industry paid. They are only looking sales of devices, which does equal games sales. There is currently no measurable way of doing overall game sales in the US or in many regions, as there is no independent tracking system in place.

The only way you get numbers on sales of games are from the companies themselves, either the suppliers like Nintendo, Sony, Apple, Microsoft etc. or through the programmers of the games.

I know few people who have made games on iOS as a side thing. The general range of sales is like 10,000 units and maybe 50,000 units of a game that isn’t super high profile.

There have also been a number cited games sales on the 3DS which were 10 to 1 over mobile.

So I bet you could also say there is 100x many TVs as games systems as many TVs play games. Or computers….there are billions of computers, everyone on a computer must be buy games on a regular basis.

        2. This article is not stupid. By saying it stupid you are saying App Annie analysis as stupid which is obviously wrong since companies (and us) can learn many things from this and react appropriately to achieve more desirable result with their future products. I won’t be suprise in the slightest if this study turn out to be sponsored by Nintendo.

Statement such as ‘don’t compare bananas and apples because they are different fruits’ from the companies’ perspective is wrong because both of them despite being very different in nature, they are still fruits. It probably does not matter to you as a customer if you prefer apple over banana but it does matter to the banana sellers if vast majority of customers prefer apple over banana.

          1. Yes App Annie is stupid, they look at very narrow view of all the factors going on in the industry right now and they curve them to suit their own interest, at times even make up facts that aren’t there. I have read a few articles of how handheld games would be dead in 2 years cause of the over take by smartphone and even sited the first few months of sales of the 3DS as evidence.

And people who try to compare computers to consoles are only fooling themselves is going to be a good predictor of game sales. Computers vastly outnumber the sales consoles, but the console version of the games sell more than the computer version. This is exactly what they are doing with mobile sales but they are coming to the conclusion the sales will be greater on them because the number of units sold (or sold under 2 year contract agreements). If you tried to get a loan on a start up business siting their logic you would get picked apart and denied.

They haven’t even factor in competition of shelve space, number of downloads being free, who much an average user downloads etc.

Its a silly study to suite the needs of the people who paid for it.

        3. haha. i agree. most people i know who play mobile games doesn’t even know what square enix, wii u or other console related stuff. because everyone has cellphones and these people aren’t dedicated gamers and have not experienced console gaming yet. i bet if they try a 3ds there would be a huge chance that they would buy one since console gaming is way more entertaining than mobile games

  1. You could take into account that android and ios phone are almost sold too on vending machines and part of happy menus.

    1. Whatever hole they crawled out from, they have declared war on both us and the Sonyans!

Time to spread the word of REAL gaming to these ignorant kids!

      1. You made an interesting point, Commander. No matter how much games on mobile devices look beautiful, they will never, ever, be as immersive as those games conceived to dedicate handhelds.

        1. I think that if our Empire created their own Smartphone/Console with as much power as possible, we could take control over a large portion of the Apple Armada territory…

If marketing the device as an essential part of people’s lives…

                1. I don’t, Super Gravy. But I do have MK7.

By the way, Commander and I never played alongside. Maybe due to my busy-busy life (I could say that my life is killing me lately) and also because the timezone…

                    1. Yeah… I’ve been quite busy lately, that’s why I’m almost not touching my 3DS. Actually yesterday I played Sonic 2 on it (I have Sonic Collection for DS), upgraded the firmware and downloaded the demo of Dream Team. All of that took me less than 20 min, I think.

No, I don’t have letterbox, but it could be in fact a good idea downloading it…

      1. Exactly the point I was trying to reach in my comment below yours. They are buying a few games to go on their phone, not buying the phone to play a specific game. People get new phones, big deal.

          1. Not the phones we are discussing here… you don’t get a free iPhone. You pay $200 for a discounted new one. Or pay $100 for last years model.

    2. Why the need to analyze this? I don’t think it’s what they are trying to claim it is. IOS/Android people NEED a phone. They don’t NEED a handheld gaming system. So of course people are going to get a PHONE over a handheld.

I don’t see this logic being applied. Of course you’ll want a few apps on your fancy phone, some games.

It’s like saying, OMG, TVs sell more than video game consoles. People use a TV for other reasons, same as a phone.

    3. Naaaah. It’s not a real comparison. Dedicated Gaming handhelds with real, full price games like the 3DS are totaly different to Multi tasking smart phones that can play games limited to a capacative touch screen.

There’s like a billion smart phones in the world and currently like 35 Million 3DS’. Like comparing Cars to Motorbikes. Doesn’t matter how many cars there is, people still want to get out there and pop a wheely on their Ducati.

      1. Fact, Nintedward. Those people twisted the data, and did not use proper methodology to make that statement.

How have you been? Playing a lot? I was expecting one comment from you in the Japanese sales chart earlier today.

        1. Hey dude, just been chillin! playing Mario and Luigi dream team. Not been playing Wiiu since I finished Pikmin 3 a second time. Getting Splinter cell blacklist and the W101 on friday though!

          1. Have you already finished Pikmin 3 twice? My goodness! I’m still in the very beginning of it. But the story-line as well as the visuals of Pikmin 3 are exquisitely amazing!

I downloaded Dream Team yesterday, but I do not know if I liked it or not. Since I’m not familiar with Mario RPGs, I’m not sure if I need more time to get used of it.

W101 will be a day 1 purchase for me. Regarding Splinter Cell Blacklist… I have yet to decide.

                1. It was great! There was so many things to see like the Eiffel Tower and this one place that were the King used to live. That place was HUUUGE and BEAUTIFUL. There were some sad good byes though ;(

Well, anyway I’m talking about Dream Team. Great game. I’m currently at the final boss right now ( I won’t spoil anything). Dream Team is now my 2nd favorite game of all time :)

                  1. Nice to hear that you had a good time there.

I said elsewhere that I only miss the French food, but I forgot to say that I also miss the French girls. They are very charming and engaging, and would be even more if I could talk to them (I do not speak a word in French…).

Anyways, I’ll give Dream Team demo another try, then.

                    1. Thanks and agreed. Although I can’t speak the language fluently though so it was a little hard for me to communicate, but that will change this year.

With regards to Dream Team, the game does make you more powerful in the beginning, but it really gets more difficult as the story progresses. Plus you definitely made a great decision on getting this RPG that I can say for sure.

                  1. It is hard times indeed…

Let’s blame the Xbots for it…

Which is their fault to a degree anyway…

                      1. Are you scammed by your friends or Microsoft? My friends just overhype and over excited for everything. This is one of the reason why I wait a couple of months before buying games. Look like the waiting part is mistake for me with Fire Emblem Awakening. (I thought that game was overhype at first.)

                    1. Microsoft I have the greatest friends on Xbox live. I so sad that I get to pay 20$ for 3 months of live on top of the game purchase.

    4. I don’t think they understand that some of us rather play mobile games for like 5 minutes while waiting compared to playing portable gaming console for 5 minutes because it is not enough time.

What I am trying to say is that people got Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita so that they can bring it with them to friend’s house or play the game on a long ride and etc. Those gaming apps only required a couple of second to play compared to majority of portable console games.

Let’s face it, I don’t want to start up a “The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time” game to play for 5 minutes. Would you do the same?

    5. First of all, that was somewhat expected. As portable phones got more powerful, it made sense to offer refined apps as well as appealing games on then. Then we have the cell phones “spin-offs” called tablets. For the same reason, it also got plausible to gaming on them.

Lots of people have cells phones, and tablets as well. In addition, many of them have even more than one device of each type.

Second, why the effects on Nintendo and Sony market shares would be devastating? Such a strong statement… There is something called “adaptability”. Both the tech and entertainment worlds are very dynamic, and for sure there will be enough demand for Nintendo and Sony products – whatever they are – for years to come because of their mind share.

      1. The worst can happen is that Nintendo will start making a portable gaming device into phone. I know Sony have one but… it is not done properly or something like that.

        1. Even I, which I admi to calling myself a dedicated Sony fan, have no idea precisely what PS Mobile is and where to get it. Apparently Sony took marketing tips from the Wii U (No, offence guys).

          1. By the way, Guy, since you are a Sony fan, do you think it is well worth getting a Vita? The price cut made me think about picking up one soon…

            1. After the price cut? Definitely . There are some decent games you can’t get elseware. If you were to ask before the price cut, I would’ve advised against it. What kind of games are you into? I could give a suggestion or two.

              1. Sure, I’d like to buy one for the Sony exclusives.

As an 80’s gamer, I have a crush on platform games (either adventure or fighting). But lately I’ve been playing some JRPGs and strategy games as well.

But any input is very welcome!

                1. Platformers were never my biggest passion, but Little Big Planet has competent single player and has some gems in a sea of rather mediocre user created levels (Look around online for suggestions and check the developer picks). As for RPG’s, I can’t recommend enough Atlas’ Persona series. Persona 4 Golden is excellent and available as a physical copy, and Persona 3 Portable is download only. To round things out, Uncharted Golden Abyss is fun if you’re into shooters, and you can search the online store for a ton of older games for PS1 and the Origional PSP.

                  1. Oh yea and to add to his statement. Look at the PS1 and PSP support on the Vita store and not the PS3 store. Some PS1 and PSP games cannot play on Vita unless you hack your Vita. Just be careful with those games.

Everyone love Persona games on the Vita and you can take his word for it. (I don’t have it and I not getting it for a while due to the fact I have way too many RPG or JRPG games to play or grind through.)

                2. You probably like Gravity Rush (Gravity Daze) then. I know you ask me if you like Demon Blade and so far it is similar game. I just beaten third boss on the “Female” story. (I don’t really want to spoil the story.)

I know for sure the Wii version is very good at least for me. So far Vita is similar to the Wii version. The Wii version support Gamecube, Classic, and Wiimote and Nun-chuck combo.

NOTES: There are no motion sensor or movement involved with the Wii version at all. So, don’t listen to those damn losers that they don’t want to “wiggle” on the Wii version. -_-

                3. Personally I won’t buy the PS Vita, however I’ve changed my mind about it…

I’d rather have it succeed than letting those Androids win…

                4. There are too many games to recommend, but off of the top of my head, some highlights that might fit your linking include:

                  Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
                  Persona 4 Golden
                  LittleBigPlanet PS Vita
Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack
                  Gravity Rush
                  Disgaea 3
                  New Little King’s Story
                  Sound Shapes
Rayman Origins (if you haven’t played it on another platform)
                  Escape Plan
                  Super Crate Box
                  Life of Pixel
                  Guacamelee

Here’s a list of some well reviewed ones.

                  http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/vita/metascore?view=condensed

            2. I would have recommended it before the price cut, but even more-so now. However, I would wait until Black Friday and around that time for the real good deals. Chances are some great bundles and extra discounts will be coming out so you don’t have to worry about spending a lot of extra money on memory cards.

I have had my Vita since launch and have used it just about every single day since then. While it isn’t perfect, it is still one of (if not THE) best handhelds I have ever used from a hardware perspective. Plus, there are tons of hidden gems on that machine.

              1. Which games would you recommend right now? I got Wipeout 2048, Muramasa Rebirth, Gravity Rush (Gravity Daze), Playstation All-Star (I didn’t like it at all) and Hatsune Miku Project Diva F (imported).

I been thinking about getting Vita version of Dragon Crown or PSO2 (import) for my Vita.

                  1. Right… The Persona series has always been well received. Actually, I strongly believe I’ll get Persona 4 as soon as I grab the Vita.

                1. I did a little list already (above) but I’ll add to it with other games from genres that he didn’t mention.

Soooo, in addition to that list I would recommend:

                  *original list *
                  Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
                  Persona 4 Golden

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack
                  Gravity Rush
                  Disgaea 3
                  New Little King’s Story
                  Sound Shapes

                  Helldivers

Whoops. ;/ Guess this was kind of a long list. I’ll stop here then.

Good thing I didn’t go into the PS Mobile, PSP, PS1 games, plus the Vita games which haven’t even been confirmed for localization yet. ;/

                  1. Wow… Nice list, Simply G.

Many thanks for all you guys helping me with your kind hints. I copied and pasted all the dialogues here and I’ll check everything when I got home this evening.

                    Thank you!

              2. Yeah, the biggest issue the Vita has always had for me was those memory cards. I’m glad Sony has said they’re getting a price cut.

                1. I might have one for you erich80, ever heard of Midevil? Dan Fortesque to the rescuse! Wait, I’m depending on a zombie/skeleton to save mankind and fight against his undead brethren? It’s really a funny game and one of the best platforms of the PS era even on PSP. I also add that into the list on Simple G. Give it a shot…I loved its comedy.

                  1. I could not remind that game, but I googled it and then I remembered that one friend of mine used to have it for PS1. I have no memories about the gameplay, but I’ll look for some videos on YouTube when I’m home today. Thanks, Snowman!

        2. That would be strange, indeed. But, you know, Ninty is a stiff company. That means that they are very reactionary and traditional. Based on Iwata’s standpoints and late press releases, I doubt Nintendo will make a gaming device to cell phones/tablets in a near future. Also, it could spread too much the efforts of the development crew, leading to low quality, rushed games, something we know Nintendo refuses to do.

          1. When I first played Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon (Prof. E. Gadd and Luigi talks over the DS very often) I thought about the possibility of using the DS/3DS to voice and data calls via an app that could be release anytime in the future by Nintendo. That should be amazing!

            1. But the 3DS don’t have cell or phone chip for data and voice call. I guess you could use hotspot to call through the apps. But on the serious notes, I agree that Nintendo should put in apps to call the friends up just like the Wii U have it.

              1. True. But it could work fine wirelessly, indeed, like using Skype (which does not work fine, but let’s forget about it) on a laptop.

      1. I really hope you don’t mean putting trashy ipod games on the 3DS!!!? Only quality stuff allowed on 3DS and Wii U please!

    6. Android and iOS games are 99 cents while 3DS games are $45…hmmm I wonder why Android and iOS games sell more??? Plus everyone owns a smart phone now-a-days, not everyone owns a 3DS or Vita. I would be EXTREMELY surprised if 3DS and Vita could outsell them…

      1. The thing is, those $0.99 games are just 5 minute time wasters for when you’re bored in line. 3DS and PS Vita games are 40 dollars because they have more depth and content.

    7. Just got word that PS4 AND the goddamn Vita are getting Minecraft….. seriously… the Vita!? Where is Wii U’s version of Minecraft!!!!!! It would sell tons of copies and would push some Wii U consoles! Minecraft sells no matter where it goes.

        1. That seems like the way it goes now-a-days…(sigh) Maybe they are working on a Wii U version and it’ll just come out at a later date? I mean every single platform has MInecraft except for a Nintendo device. iOS, Xbone, PS4, Vita… C’mon that’s just wrong.

          1. I could not count on that – having Minecraft on Wii U. A 3DS version would be more plausible due to the larger install base, in my opinion. In industry, nobody wants to cook the dinner, just stop buy, eat it and leave.

            1. The only thing that gives me hope for a Wii U version is the fact that they are putting it on the Vita… -__-

              1. Well… They’re putting it on PS3 as well… Maybe Sony and Mojang have an agreement in which all Sony systems could receive the game… (Actually, I think Minecraft is not heading to PSP…)

But… Time will tell what’s going to happen…

    8. since neither android nor iOS mobile devices are handhelds i don’t see how these sales figures are comparable in any way whatsoever

    9. Wasnt it not that long ago that iOS was beating the dedicated Handheld consoles by like a 3-1 margin by itself? Cause if thats true, then that means good news for Nintendo and Sony.

    10. Go make your IOS, $0-$5 games and see that most of the people willing to pay $40 to $60 for a console game do not buy these games.

    11. well the casuals love their iphones and shit. plus those fucking apps are 99% cheaper. I’ll stick with my true handheld experience to the end.

      1. It’s never too late, but I wouldn’t want them to. We get more variety with them as separate companies.

Either way, that wouldn’t be happening or even thought about in the near future.

    12. Actualy don’t let those sales figures fool you. Its easier to move cell phones because everyone needs one. So if there are 50 million handhelds in the world sold and 300 million cell phones and sold in the world the mobile platform has a better oppertunity to move games but put a game on a mobile platform for 49.99 and let’s see how much profit is made.

Oh yeah anyone know what the revenue for the mobile market is?

    13. UGH. This garbage again. Holy cow, smartphones surpassed gaming dedicated devices in sales? MUST be because of the AWESOME games smartphones have! Watch out 3DS, those PHONES are going to outsell you because of “teh awsme” games. I mean, we ALL know people buy a PHONE so they can play ANGRY BIRDS. Not to make phone calls, oh no. That’s not why it outsells you. Mario and Luigi dream team? Nice try, “doodle kids” wipes the floor with you. Seriously, how can people not realize that phones outsell the 3DS/Vita because they are @#$%^NG PHONES!?!?!?

    14. phone games are quick 10 min puzzle games on the whole and the people who buy them tend to be the type who don’t play a lot of in depth games that need more than 10 min concentration. and console gaming numbers are increasing. but most people who buy a phone will buy the phone for making calls and texturing maybe some internet usage to check FB or twitter. most people i know will play the free games over paying for them on OS or android

    15. but how can they tell of their gaming section is making money? i’ve only seen the app store and it shares both gaming app and other apps. nintendo could do much better if there was more price drops.

    16. Why should we even care? The 3DS is slated to be the best selling console yet and proves that dedicated handheld gaming devices can co-exist with mobile phones. Not a huge problem at all. Why don’t you share this information with some ignorant person that cares like Michael Pachter.

    17. mobile games and console games have different market. i don’t think that this is a threat to sony and nintendo handhelds.

    18. Who ever wrote this article needs to be fired.

This makes about as much sense as saying computer sales are beating video games console sales combined and because you can play video games on both that means that they are in direct competition to each other. Even Pachter wouldn’t stoop this low for a cheap pop.

    19. I don’t understand why analysts don’t seem to get that these are different markets? If the mobile gaming market is destroying the dedicated gaming handheld market, why does the dedicated gaming handheld market have a larger user base than ever before in history?

The mobile market is selling more for sure but in many cases the two are not directly competing. Corollas outsell Ferrari’s, that doesn’t mean that Ferrari is going out of business or threatened by the success of Corolla. Different experience, Clash of Clans isn’t going to steal many players from Fire Emblem.
