This week’s Japanese sales charts are in courtesy of Media Create. The Nintendo 3DS was on fire selling an incredible 276,000 units. This was due in no small part to the long-awaited Monster Hunter 4 which is exclusive to Nintendo’s handheld platform.Sadly, sales of the Wii U dropped again this week as the struggling platform only sold 5,003 units. Nintendo has yet to announce whether the region will receive a price cut. Anyway, here’s the Japanese software and hardware charts.

IF you look at what is selling in Japan, no Wii U is doing ok at the moment over there. It would be better at 10,000 a week cause that is normal for a console once it hits its stride to do over their.
The WiiU is doing ok ? I don’t know what you consider as “ok” but the WiiU is doing terrible at the moment. If it’s doing this awful in Japan, the market it sells “best” in, now imagine how it must be selling in other regions. Not ok, that’s for sure.
I’ve been a fan of Nintendo for nearly 2 decades now but I think they need to drop out of the home console market and focus on handhelds because that’s what they are best at.
Again, in Japan its selling ok by the numbers they are posting. Look at the PS3, look at the time of the year for Japan. Its not a golden week or a holiday of some sort. This is normal sales (5k-9k) when there isn’t a huge release, trust me.
Other regions they are struggling for now make new sales, but that is not Japan. And that is not considering the overall sales when it first came out. There is no reason to hit the panic button over and over again stay calm dude, things change when you are not constantly looking at it.
Sorry mate, even with that explanation 5k sales per week aren’t ok. And I don’t know what you mean by “look at the PS3”. The PS3 is a console that’s been on the market for around 6 years and it’s still selling better than the WiiU, 2x times better. 12k sales per week is what I’d consider as ok. 5k-9k just isn’t normal, look at how many units the 3DS sells in normal weeks.
No matter how optimistic you are, the WiiU’s numbers aren’t ok.

I think the problem is if you look at the size of the Japanese market, look at its a slow time of the year and go ok. If this was say Golden week or holiday time, then worry.
PS3 was selling these number just a few years back by the way when the Wii was doing well, now the PS3 has kind of hit its stride since then.
Anyways you guys can believe what you want, or you can look at the sales trends which show the larger picture that your missing. There is kind of a Bell Curve that all consoles do (except the regular Wii) that they all do.

Sales will turn around. Stop hating. I love my PS3 and Xbox 360 but my Wii U is were I’m gaming at the moment. I love it and I know that people are to close minded. All consoles have strengths and weaknesses. Wii U sales will improve. The purchase was well worth it for me. My other consoles at the moment are collecting dust with exception of the new Grand Theft Auto 5 on my PS3. I have not touched my Xbox 360 in months but I’m not going around hating on it.
Get out of here! Saddens me to think that I will be playing with people like you on PS4 or Xbox One. I’d rather have the option to choose between 3 consoles then 2. More options for me as a consumer.
That doesn’t change anything about the “time of the year” though. If you’re talking about the time of the year, then I’m thinking of “events” that happen every year, like christmas sales or black friday and things of those sorts. Monster Hunter 4 is not a time of the year. But even if there wasn’t MH4, the 3DS still would have managed to sell five to six times more than the WiiU, because the 3DS usually has weekly sales of around 30k, even if there are no major releases of the likes of MH4.
Just really simple Portables sell more than consoles in Japan. That is why in 3 years the 3DS already pass PS3 total sales in Japan. I also think the PSP (19mil) sold more than the regular Wii (12mil).
Trust and not to beat a dead horse, but in Japan (not the US, Europe) given the market as a total the Wii U is selling ok and for a generally slow week minus Monster Hunter 4 which really skews the market way out, this is normal for this time of the year.
Even if you look at the US Xbox360 is selling only 90,000 a month (divided that by 4.25 and the total per week = 21,000 roughly per week in a market 10x the size) as the top console (not handheld included), that should be awful the whole game industry is going down, but really its not. Its summer and that is how summer is.
Just ignore them. Only time will tell. Just be patient.
Oh that won’t stop me from playing games I want to play, I have still have my Atari Lynx (even a a Jaguar which was not the best purchase) and have fun with it.

And saying that it wouldn’t affect me at all is pretty much false. They are making money with their handhelds and their first party titles mainly. Leaving the home console market would result in them being able to invest both more time and effort into their handhelds which could possibly lead to Nintendo developing even better handhelds and titles. And that again would result in a better gaming experience, which is what I am looking for in games.

To focus on improving their handhelds sounds like them just making phones. Nintendo has always sold the Wii U at a loss which is a bad practice to follow the other two. PS3 was sold at a loss up until just a year or two ago. The more they sell the more they lose. Same goes for the Vita, that is why in the slim they switched to the cheaper LCD screen.

A good purchase vs. bad purchase has nothing to do with how well an item is selling. As long as you are having fun with it then it is a good purchase. But, seeing as you have not clarified whether or not you enjoy your Wii U, you hold no right to justify it as either your “worst” purchase or not.

Not really, because I actually look at the games available now, not just at launch. The Wii U library is going fine and dandy now and it’s only getting better. And the Vita has it’s own strong line up as well as a good library of PSP and Playstation 1 games to boot.

gamepad is ace man. playing earthbound, nsmbu, super metroid etc. on the pad only, writing this on the pad right now. it’s great. miiverse is fantastic too. i like nintendos take on social online so much more.hope they will never introduce achievements. i love to draw stuff on miiverse. the pad is the best thing ever…i just don’t understand the hate for it. i mean i have a brandnew 2013 highend hdtv but i still prefer playing on the gamepad whenever i can. coop is so great too. rayman! no split screen on the upcoming mk8. the pad is great.

No it won’t. Even if the Wii U fails, Nintendo will just focus all of their resources on creating 3DS games for the rest of the generation. Then when the true next gen comes, Nintendo will just release a new home console. One failed home console won’t force them out of the market, however one failed handheld can and will force them out of that market if the 3DS’ successor has the same launch problems as the 3DS. If the 3DS’ successor has those same problems, it WILL fail guaranteed and Nintendo will be forced out of the handheld market unless Pokemon or Monster Hunter are available at launch.
In fact, I fully predict both Sony and Microsoft trying to take advantage of the launch period to destroy Nintendo’s dominace over the handheld market.

EVERYTHING is bombing besides the 3DS and its games. Nintendo should try hard to ‘revive’ the Japanese home console market seeing as their only tough competition is their own 3DS. With Sony degrading Japan for the PS4 to a tier 3 country it is Nintendo’s biggest chance in years to secure both the Japanese game market and even Japanese devs and studios.
The console gaming industry has been on a steady decline in Japan recently. Sony knows that the Western market is where they’re going to make the most money as it’s the largest gaming market, so they want to make sure they release here in times for the holiday rush.
Besides, they don’t really have many Japanese games lined up for the PS4’s release. So they want to make sure those are available for Japanese folks too – thus the delay.
Nintendo can try cash in with the Wii U, but I don’t see it doing *that* much better this year. Next year will be a different story though.
Ah that makes sense. I was curious as to why they have such a gap in between the release of the PS4 in the U.S. and Japan. Thanks for clearing that up!

A port with a playable framerate, without cut features, that was announced months before release and actually marketed a bit along the other 2 versions, would have sold enough to make a profit at least with lifetime sales. At this point nintendo needs something with more power. Ditch the tablet and gimmicky stuff and do what they do best, make great games. That’s what sells a console. I say they take the wii u, scrap it, coast on the 3ds/2ds for a while take that mountain of money that Pokemon is going to make them and begin making a new console with around 5-6gigs of ram, not to directly compete but ensure it’ll at least survive the next 5-6years. Liquidate the current wii u stock at $200-190 a console, to recoup some lose. Wait until next e3 to hint that a new system is on the way, show off the console a month or 2 later and launch in the fall. Court Oculus rift devs and potentially strike first on the VR console scene. First and foremost the WiiU needs to be replaced, being severely underpowered worked for the Wii because of the slow transfer to HD at the beginning of the gen, and as more and more people caught up the Wii became a wasteland. The Wii U is continuing the end of the Wii’s life cycle and its not going to improve, nows one of the last chances to admit it won’t get better, pack up, and move on or face a collapse born of nintendos own stubbornness and ignorance. Not saying its a bad system our nintendo sucks, I’m saying it should’ve been released years ago , and is just going to look more and more dated with the release of the other next gen systems.
But the great Nintendo games haven’t even been released on the Wii U yet, but you still want to scrap the Wii U and not wait to see how these games perform Genius!!

For people saying Nintendo should drop out the Wii U: this generation is just starting. Most people only buy their new consoles after a year, two years, or even 5 years after it’s been released. For those like us who buy it at an earlier time may seem stupidity, but those are people who wait for all three platforms to be on the market before making their purchase.
Also, don’t forget that Sony and Microsoft may see the same problems when they launch their consoles. Up until now no system seller has been announced for the new generations of those two, and most third-party titles that are coming for PS4 and XONE are also coming for current gen consoles. Why would anyone bother buying a new machine for games they can already play on the consoles they already have?
Let’s not forget that Wii U is having a great line-up this holiday and next year of exclusive titles, and that’s exactly what drive a console sales: exclusives!

By that logic, Nintendo should have trashed the 3DS when it came out at a 250 price tage and no games other than 2 remakes and just focused on consoles.
No, here it is. Nintendo is still paying the price for the 3DS launch. They focused their manpower on making 3DS games… and they also underestimated their transition to HD. This made the launch lineup weak, and eventually decimated the launch window.
Now here’s the thing, Nintendo thought they had third parties to fall back on. Companies were pledging allegiance to Wii U before launch, and I bet the lack of major Nintendo launch titles probably made the chancr of better sales for 3rd parties more appealing.
…But we know what happened. Third parties did thr bare minimum then told Nintendo it’s Nintendo’s job now to drive the install base. So now we see no games, loe sales, and no support.
So… the Wii U’s ricky start is because of Nintendo’s focus on 3DS and third parties unwilling to support.
We will eventually see those games from Nintendo in a big way on Wii U. They’re coming. They’re being made as we speak. Now… whether or not third parties join in, that’ll depend on XOne and PS4 success or failure.

WWHD is a game we done played a million times. Mario World 3D is Mario Land 3D with multiplayer. Smash Bros will be good. Mario Kart will be good. I seriously doubt WWHD will boost the sales drastically like everyone thinks. I hope it doesn’t at all to be honest. Nintendo has become stale. Even the Sega Saturn had high quality triple A titles its first year. I hope Nintendo learned a lesson that you can’t mooch off a fad forever. The only reason they named Wii U its name was to garner the fadness Wii had. It was played out. In 2010 people quit caring and Wii bogged down. As long as Wii U has the Wii name Nintendo will catch heck trying to prove it as a successor rather than a peripheral to Wii. If you ask me… Nintendo has already lost this gen. Sony will win with Microsoft in second.

Anyways, now things have changed… people see the Wii U having a rough start and they raise their hand like an eager schoolkid “OH! OH! I KNOW EHAT THIS MEANS! IT MEANS THE WII U IS A FAILURE!” but then the teacher would have to respond with examples like 3DS and PS3 and maybe a quote like “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.” but then the kids are like “BUT WE’RE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER!” and then the teacher would sigh because she forgot the immaturatity of today’s gamers.

Man those Monster Hunter 4 sales are dope. 3DS is doing really awesome. I just wish developers would pay more attention at how well it’s doing and start making more third party games on it. I would like to see a Resident Evil Revelations 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 3D, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker 3D, Final Fantasy V +VI 3D (btw when is Dragon Quest VII 3DS coming to North America?), among much more. I think there is good profit to be made on 3DS. The Wii U on the other hand………….Nintendo you really fucked up this first year of it. Nintendo really needs to get its shit together and start focusing on how they can improve the sales of the system. Start throwing some money at third parties!!!!
Nintendo never throw money at thirdies, unlike Sony and MS. That is the main reason EA and others are doing good with both companies. Money talks!

Anyone who says “No need to worry Nintendo isn’t in trouble yet” is simply in denial. Wii U is in serious SERIOUS trouble. I’m anxious to see how well WWHD boostes it. I doubt not by large margins but it should at least get it near 30000 otherewise Nintendo is screwed. That will show if people care about it or not. Also… PS4 and 720 come out this Christmas season. Nintendo is put to the back burner once again. They had a whole year to make Wii U a top star. Instead what we got was a year that saw hardly NO games worth getting (worst 1st year I have ever seen), horrible advertising (amazing how people still don’t know Wii has a successor), and a total lack of marketing on Nintendo’s part. Whether you like it or not, if WWHD doesn’t enhance Wii U’s sales by at least 30, consider it the next Dreamcast.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the cheaper system is going to sell more units.
I think that Nintendo should remake the Wii U and give it a new name. Then people will finally realize it’s a NEW CONSOLE. I bet that simply a new name alone would boost sales. Because there’s a lot of uneducated idiots that thinks that the Wii U is just a Wii add-on.
Nobody besides me that enjoy seeing the 360 struggle every month? Wouldn’t it be hilarious if it sold better than he Wii U? THEN it would truly be fucked.
