Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze May Have A Fifth Playable Character

Last night Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that Cranky Kong will be a playable character in Retro Studios forthcoming Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Interestingly, when Reggie was interview by Geoff he hinted that they may have a fifth playable character to announce at a future date. You can hear the tease about a fifth character at the 4:40 mark in the video embedded above. Who would you like to see as a playable character?

      1. Reggie’s making his video game debut in both Donkey Kong and the new Super Smash Brothers ^^ And he’ll be very overpowered in both >:3

  1. “Actually, there are 500 playable characters!” Jeeeez, like I’m sorry, Donkey Kong is fun and all, but to have told everyone that they chose this over a new Metroid game just makes me feel bad that this is coming out :(

    1. a le contraire ma friend (bad french), I rather have Retro making the game THEY want and not the game they are told to do, developers work better that way, ensuring the quality of this game and their next Metroid

      1. Finally someone with a brain…

This is the reason to why we barely see any overpriced bugged and glitched games on our holy machines…

        1. There was an article some months ago or something that Retro were given the choice of making either one…

      2. But there is no point making a game you “want” to make if people won’t buy it, because they want Metroid…

        1. DKCR is actually really popular. Lots of people (myself included) love it. If they made a Metroid game, it would satisfy that crowd, but there would still be plenty of people wishing it was a new Donkey Kong game. Metroid will happen, just not right now.

      3. I don’t think they work better or worse when they’re making a game they want to make.

Oh, and it’s “au contraire mon friend” (and if you want to get even technical, “mon ami”)

    2. If Rare just makes Metroid, Metroid, Metroid, they can run out of ideas and start making shitty games.

They released 3 Metroid games, no one complained, they are releasing their second Donkey Kong game and people complain, I know Donkey Kong is not as “mature” but it’s still a Nintendo classic.

    3. Metroid: 2 million
Donkey Kong Country Returns: 6 million
I can’t imagine Nintendo NOT cashing in on the more profitable one

  2. LoL More Big suprises!Nintendo if you wanna die just take a Gun to your head and pull the trigger FFS.#WiiuDeadConfirmed

    1. By your Sonyan logics, the Wii wouldbe stronger than the Wii U since it had several online multiplayer games…

        1. Because I have even bigger things to concentrate on no matter how odd it might seem…

I’m getting one early next year so…

  3. I just learned that the show best announcement was a Antonio banderas GIF using the last of us gameplay graphics lol. Nintendo was more than generous giving them the cranky reveal.

  4. Kinda sucked that cranky kong was a ripoff from Ducktales. Personally I don’t care how many characters you can play as, eventually you’ll just wind up playing with the same guy anyway.

  5. Reggie already said there is still more Year of Luigi to come so Luigi will definitely be the fifth playable character.

  6. I’d like to see Tiny Kong. She hasn’t been in much since her debut in DK64. Going back a few years now. Or even Dixie Kong.

    1. Because Rob it will be a system seller and DK is a classic IP created by Miyamoto. It sells. Perhaps you should brush up on your gaming history.

If you didn’t care, then why would you bother posting such a stupid comment!

        1. What on earth is that supposed to mean? I care that this game is coming out as I shall be getting it. What more do you want?

          1. Well for one it means you have a reading comprehension problem.

You – “If you didn’t care, then why would you bother posting such a stupid comment!”

You inferred his comment was stupid. I inferred your comment was stupid. Please, don’t go there with me this morning. You know exactly what I was referring to.

      1. a system seller like mario 3d world i guess cough cough.. and if this monkey sells games it will bring more children to console, which wont bring any third party to the console, only a sequel to barbie dream house. yay

      2. Nope. No it’s not.

I love Nintendo to death, but every time a new game is coming out we think it’s going to be a system seller. Hell, Super Mario 3D World is fucking brilliant, and even that doesn’t manage to sell systems. This whole “next title is a system seller” argument is old now. If they do not do something drastic soon this console will die a painful death.

I’ve bought 15 games over the course of this first year. None of which have been bad games in my opinion. We’ve even had some really awesome ones like 3D World, Wonderful 101, Lego City and Pikmin 3. But there appears to be no system sellers out at the moment. There are enough games to justify buying the console, but appearently there aren’t any “must have” games according to the majority of gamers out there. I love my Wii U, and I’m having a blast playing it, but I fear that it might be time to give up.

There are games coming in 2014. There are a couple of incredible games announced already, but will it be enough? Nintendo has one move left. We already know that they could have shown the new Wii U Zelda twice this year. It was hinted around E3 that they didn’t because they wanted to focus on other things, And again around comic con when Aonuma stated that he didn’t have time to prepare anything, but it was ready to be shown. So they need to show the new Zelda game, and they need to get Retro working on Metroid. And they need them to do it fast enough to show a teaser for E3 at the latest. It doesn’t matter if it takes two more years for it to come out after that. As long as the fans knows that it’s coming, they’ll be alright.

Get Platinum to do Starfox and get Sega to do another F-Zero (GX was fucking amazing!)
And finally, get the teams that make Mario Kart and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed together and let them make magic! Get them to do a new racing adventure game in the style of Diddy Kong Racing, but with characters from Mario and Sonic.

And last, but not least: Get Miyamoto to create something new! Not some casual crap, something for the core gamers. Something that will re-establish Nintendo as a “must have” brand!

          1. What in the name of fuck does the 3DS have to do with anything I just said? I know the 3DS is selling consoles. It’s a fucking beast of a machine. Doesn’t change the fact that the Wii U is not…

        1. I would say that 3D World is indeed pushing a lot of consoles. Black Friday isn’t everything. There was little additional incentive to buy a Wii U that day seeing that the price was still $299 at virtually all retailers. We have to remember that the Wii U was released a year ago. It isn’t going to compete unit for unit with the launch of PS4 and Xbox One right now. We have to take everything leading up to the holiday season as a whole. Hopefully this increase in sales doesn’t die out in the new year.

As for F-Zero, I wouldn’t trust Sega with that franchise anymore seeing that so many of their titles are total shit these days. That said, Sonic All-Stars Racing is the best thing they’ve got going for them right now, so maybe that particular team could do something with F-Zero. I certainly don’t want to see SASR combined with Mario Kart. I like them as separate franchises, and a little competition is seldom a bad thing.

I think Nintendo will be okay, although I also think this generation is going to look a lot like the Gamecube days for Nintendo. They will come third in the console race (hopefully not a distant third), but they are by no means doomed. I think the dust is still settling after the whole Wii craze and Nintendo is figuring out which demographic groups have hopped off the bandwagon (your granny), anf which are willing to go for a second ride. I think if they can get their marketing shit together they’ll realize that their blue ocean strategy is still effective.

I don’t think the Wii U is under threat from tablet and smartphones either, and it may be the stupidest argument I’ve ever heard. In essense, Nintendo has to lay off marketing the Wii U as a console for families and kids specifically and instead market it as a “social gaming” console generally. That’s the key component that tablets/smartphones lack, as well as online multiplayer for that matter. The Wii controller succeeded because it was “fun” not “serious”. The Wii had some serious games, but ultimately it was not a machine about “gaming”, but having fun with friends, your girlfriend, your kids, whatever. The weird thing is, I don’t think Nintendo fully understands what made the Wii popular in the first place. If Nintendo can refocus their efforts on “social gaming” (which has overlap with both casual and hardcore gaming), then they will have a console that appeals to everybody, because we’re all (well, most of us) social creatures by nature.

More than anything, I would market it as “the console that girl you like will play”, because that’s a market that nobody’s fully capitalized on but is ripe for the picking for Nintendo. I’ve never met a girl who didn’t like Mario Kart at least a little bit (and a lot of them like Zelda, too). Nintendo has a really good product that they don’t quite know how to sell. That continues to be their problem a year after the Wii U’s release.

          1. You speak some sense, sir.

Regardless of whether or not the Wii U fails to outsell the lifetime sales of the competition, it is still on track to be more than successful enough to generate some good profit for Nintendo. Also, even if it fails completely, I still love it, so I’m satisfied with it.

    1. Donkey Kong Jr is already playable. He’s the current Donkey Kong, and Cranky Kong is the ORIGINAL Donkey Kong. That was established nearly 20 years ago.

      1. But Donkey Kong Jr was with DK in Mario Tennis, so he can’t be the same character, unless some weird thing happens that makes him Diddy Kong later in the series.

        1. They are the same character, just like how Baby Mario is Mario. It’s just that a universe like the Mario Universe could care less about understanding.

  7. I would love to see Candy with more spotlight, but Lanky seems the best one for uniqueness. Wouldn’t object to Chunky or Tiny but I doubt she would get a spot with Dixie being there. Luigi though? No! Maybe a cameo somewhere or his hat on with the green colors to the Kong clothing for this Year of Luigi stuff. Kiddy should’ve gotten his return on a DKC but it seems Cranky’s getting his chance to shine.

  8. I thought shit what a wasted opportunity. Now that I’ve seen the trailer I am really excited for this game. It’s difficulty will be legendary. awesome.

  9. There is nothing about his comment that leads me to believe there really is a 5th character. it feels like a throwaway joking comment.

  10. I don’t think he was serious about the 5th playable character. I’d love for either Lanky, Chunky, or Funky Kong to return.

    1. Retro said in a direct that they can work on 2 games at the same time. One big and one small but the funny thing is that even if they show both games at the same time unless they say themselves wich one is we will never know.

  11. The best announcement of the vgx was uncharted… bwahaha cranky was the only saving grace from that bore casual fest.

  12. this shit is hilarious, ive been laughing for like 15 minutes about how much of a fail this is!!!!! cranky is famous, for being a fail!!!!! hes everywhere like trending twitter for vgx, numerous videos on youtube and if you type in cranky kong hahahahahh!!!!! it looks like cranky finally got the credit he deserves, cranky needs to be the new nintendo mascot, cranky is going to become a legend because of this!!!!!

    1. Donkey Kong was an arcade game that was Nintendo’s first big hit in North America and it is also the very first Mario game. It also marked the first appearance of Mario (originally known as “Jumpman”, a carpenter) and of the original Donkey Kong (who, in later games, would become Cranky Kong, the current Donkey Kong’s grandfather).

    2. Donkey Kong, an arcade game created by Nintendo and released in July 1981, was the first game that allowed players to jump over obstacles and across gaps, making it the first true platformer.[9][10] Donkey Kong had a limited amount of platforming in its first two screens, but its last two screens had a more pronounced platform jumping component. This game also introduced Mario, a modern icon of the genre, under the name Jumpman. Donkey Kong was ported to many consoles and computers at the time, and the title helped to cement Nintendo’s position as an important name in the video game industry internationally.

        1. yeah but cranky already will win for being a laughing stalk, so luigi will give him a hand shake and say, “i dont feel like the out shadowed bro who doesnt get the attention he deserves, because at least im not a laughing stalk.”

  13. vgx “introducing noa president reggie” this is your first ever announcement ever for vgx!!!!!! “yes it is indeed, so we were thinking at nintendp why do we need games, *points at screen* when we have…… *takes deep proud breath* cranky kong.

              1. “Yeah, since he backs out of every (flame) war with his tail between his legs”

you take this way to seriously man.

                  1. “you make it way too easy its not even sport anymore”

your making yourself sound like a loser. this is probably your only extra activity. here you can win. take the reward.

                    1. Id give you an award for first retard to repeat what I said over and over again so heres your prize, one fuck

…. Uh-Oh it appears im out of fucks to give so youll just have to take Sony’s dick up your itchy ass

                      1. angry social reject hahaah and every time i pretty much say im leaving, you just follow up with i dont got anymore fucks left to give. every time i say im done talking with you. if someone has cancer, you say they would deserve it. your a pathetic person. somebody the other day said something not positive about nintendo.and you said, maybe you deserve cancer.

your mad, look at your baby insults. i dont even need to insult you because your loser in the real world, so you resort to nintendo and attack people that dont worship them. also you reply to all my comments. your pathettic.

      1. U do know the whole VGX sucked ass. Everyperson who watched it said it was the worst. Before u say something to do with nintendo, it was a god damn mess. they had the award show in a damn studio. Many people even said this was passable since the whole thing wasted 3hours of peoples life. at this pint i don’t care about the announcement. I saw ign and many ps, nintendo, microsoft fans sayed the vgx sucked

            1. Indeed…

The saddest part was that even our empire’s worst announcement surpasses that entire abomination of a show ahahahhahahahahah…

      2. You are talking about things you don’t understand! Please stop being so angry with Nintendo, they are doing their best.

        1. im not angry. im just laughing of how much a fail they are!!!!! im not disappointed at the announcement even if they acted like it was going to be something big and something you have to see. im not disappointed because i dont expect that much from nintendo. what they did though is create laughter and probably make cranky more popular from this world premiere.

          1. Really would anyone wanted to see zelda there? The funny thing is nintendo direct had more viewers then a nintendo direct (from what i’ve been told by friend). Aleast cranky can put that money where his mounth is at last. not to mention his kong pow turns enemies to coins

        1. Dude honestly it’s really not that funny. Whether you love or hate Nintendo, it’s seriously nowhere near as funny as people like you make it out to be. You’ve been laughing your ass off about this? Doesn’t take much to make you laugh I guess.

    1. so was this the long hinted at announcement? another playable character? or did i miss something? because this is so anticlimactic that i’m wondering why they even bothered to mention it in the first place

      1. its the biggest fail of this generation!!!! they embarrassed themselves, they should have shown zelda a trailer of x, something for the demographic and say hey this is what wii u has to offer. nope instead cranky kong hahahahahah!!!!! its all good though because its hilarious.

      1. Well miyamoto confirmed that I believe a while back, its possible that they working on another project but don’t get over hyped

    2. Hahahaha Nintendo just troll us, and is working just like they expected… fucking genius, damn you Reggie, your body is always ready.

          1. You’re possibly one of the most pathetic people on this site. You laugh so hard about an announcement, and the sick part is you laugh extra hard cause you enjoy seeing others disappointed cause they expected more. I personally didn’t care what they announced. Didn’t phase me. You get off on people feeling upset or let down. That’s truly pathetic.

    3. I’m glad you guys liked 3D World, and I’m glad it apparently rocked unique game play from the NSMB.

I’m glad most of you went from “Nintendo should do something important!” to “I’m glad they didn’t waste Metroid on the VGA.”

I ended up not buying 3D world (due to no online play as I don’t really enjoy Mario games by myself anymore) and After playing DK on my 3DS, I’ve had my fill of the Ape Platformer. So no tropical freeze for me.

Connecting the dots, Nintendo consoles are not targeted to me anymore. Since PS and xBox have underwelming next-gen libraries, there’s really nothing for me to do but play my 3DS, and..OMG, start tending to hobbies that are NOT gaming related…

Thanks Cranky, for the laugh, and Thanks Nintendo for giving me a chunk of my life back. WiiU will get games I want someday, so I’ll keep the system and binge-game when they release.

Hell, I may turn my PC on for the first time in 2 years. I have been one obsessed gamer, time for some sunshine! (My 3DS will keep me broke-into gaming.) And I’ll play a few rounds of Mass Effect 3 now and again.

Time for lunch and some exercise!

      1. Totally agree with you, dude. I have one game for my WiiU…Nintendo Land. I’ll wait for the 3 games I want to come out next year but until then, I guess I’ll…I don’t know, color?

    4. Hopefully it turns out to be a good name.

I feel kind of sorry for Retro. They seem to be making a good game here, yet most people want them to make the same crap over and over again (Metroid). Hopefully they shut them up.

    5. Nintendo was smart saving best games for bigger events. After all why is it you don’t see the a lot of car concepts never seen before at LAIAS but many never before seen cars and concepts are at the 2015 NAIAS, Chicago Auto Show and the NYAS. The Cleveland auto show hardly get any concepts. Because its not apart of the big picture. Good job Nintendo.

    6. That didn’t sound like a yes… I’m not convinced there will be a 5th playable character from that clip.

Reggie said “we’re not gonna reveal a 5th for you”. Not sure how that translates to a possible 5th character.

    7. This game would be the shit if Samus Aran was an unlockable playable character. I think it would be cool to see her guest star in a platformer plus it would be so unexpected.

    8. Pingback: Here’s Plenty Of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Details | My Nintendo News

    9. Funky seems the most likely, but i’d love to see mario appear with his NSMB moveset. A bit of overlap between the two series is never a bad thing.
