Ubisoft Explains Why They Delayed Watch Dogs

Ubisoft North American president Laurent Detoc has explained to IGN why the company decided to delay its highly anticipated Watch Dogs. Detoc says it was in the company’s best interest to delay the game in order to deliver an exemplary product. Detoc says he is aware of the criticism the announcement brought, but is determined that it was the best thing for the game in the long run.

“It’s a very intense decision I think one of the fascinating things about this industry is that you can go from genius to idiot in an extremely short time frame. These are some of those moments, where you’re riding sky high on Watch Dogs or Rayman, and then suddenly you have to break it to the outside world, and sometimes even convince the inside people. Not everybody agrees. You have to say, ‘this is in the best interest of the product, to do this,’ because at the end of the day we’re going to be able to do this extra fine tuning.”

“I actually believe that Watch Dogs could have ended up being the best-rated game on next gen if it came out at launch. We wanted it to be even higher,” Detoc told us. “The whole package is there already. But without sending them too many flowers, the guys at Rockstar have showed us again that if you make a 96-percent game, people will come. Watch Dogs, I can only hope we get to that level. There’s an attachment to the brand, in the case of GTA, that makes people really want to give it that 100-percent review. We’ll be missing that on Watch Dogs until we go further, potentially. That’s what we’re after.”

  1. Please make this game really goo on Wii U, anyone that says different can really go and just into a hole!

Don’t give us a stupid 360 port Ubisoft, this is your chance to really shine and make the Wii U version really good! I will be buying it!

          1. The game would probably be built for either X1 and PS4 and then they’ll port it over to other consoles. We really need to see a game made for next gen platforms. Right now it’s not been up there.

  2. this game gonna have a hard time, the moment the gimmick of hacking fades away, it’s over, it will be a good game, but it won’t live to the hype

    1. I do believe so, too. And Ubisoft is just talking baloneys here. It´s clear that they delayed the game to avoid it being a total flop like they did with Rayman Legends. Watch Dogs would be tottally ignored with so many great games right now being sold (CoD, Fifa, Mario 3d, Forza5, GTAV and their AC IV, Battlefield 4). I think this game is going to flop

  3. just wait till the article that says.” wii u version of watchdogs is the worst version, runs at 10 frames less per second, has the worst graphics and sold less than 2% on wii u. the wii u seems to be struggling. it will be a heck of a funeral.

        1. They ain’t gonna though. The Wii U version is already a 360 port. Best you can hope for is that it will be correctly optimized to that it looks and plays as good as games like Deus EX and NFS:MWU. Nobody is building games from scratch on Wii U hardware except 3rd party studios like Shin’en Multimedia.

    1. “Watch Dogs sold less than 2% on Wii U” now that’s where I realised the bullshit. So it’s not out yet but the Wii U version, which has been said to be middle ground, so better than PS360, has sold less than the other not yet out versions. Yeeeeeaaah that makes sense

        1. yeah your lucky you posted that and lucky i actually saw this comment because i was just going to call you the biggest dumb ass.

            1. bring on the hate. at least i have reading comprehension and talk truth about nintendo, the rest of you just walk around brain dead.

  4. “It’s a very intense decision I think one of the fascinating things about this industry is that you can go from genius to idiot in an extremely short time frame. ”

For his sake, he better come out a genius or else it’s Rayman all over again.

  5. Having more development time as a side effect of wanting Assassin’s Greed to sell more seems to be a good thing.

There shouldn’t be framerate issues this time because it’s not a port of the Xbox 360. The Wii U version is longer in development than the older systems.

This time they should also keep their promise of in between visuals….

If it is done well then I’ll probably get the Wii U version too.

  6. If everyone is going to allow Nintendo to release Smash Bros after Spring instead of when we would like it, then everyone can forgive Ubisoft for delaying Watch Dogs.

The Nintendo community is always gung-ho about how “A bad game released later can be good while a bad game released early will always be bad,”

so don’t get mad at Ubi.

    1. Nobody’s Mad at UBi.
They’ve got enough games to buy.

The only time anybody is mad at Ubi is when they delay a game 7 months to release it on the 360 and PS3 because “fans” asked for it. Then the game sells more on the WiiU. AND THEY PORT IT TO THE PS4 AND XBOX ONE WITH MORE FUCKING CONTENT..

NO FUCK YOU UBISOFT. Could have waited on the PS4 and Xbox and ported to there and get more sales on the WiIU IN THE FIRST FUCKING DAMN PLACE>

But nooo everyones busy with fucking gta. IF Knack can do well as a side effect of launch it would have been smarter to launch on the PS4 and Xbox.

Ubisoft is run by a bunch of retards. Wasted money porting to the other ocnsoles

      1. I wasn’t expressing my views onto anyone specifically on this website, it said at the end of the article that Ubisoft has gotten some criticism for the delay. I was aiming my comment ambiguously at whoever it is that is criticizing Ubisoft.

I also don’t want to get into a Rayman rant lol! We ALL know Ubisoft failed with that game.

  7. I think the delay was beneficial to the Wii U. If it was launched early, then most people will have more reason to buy PS4 and Xbone.

  8. It makes sense to me that it’d be delayed, you want to put your best foot forward and that’s simply what Ubisoft is trying to do.

  9. My hype has pretty much died for this game, don’t know why :/ I’ll most likely still play it, but on my bro’s PS4 when he gets it.

    1. These guys totally missed the opportunity when this game was hyped over the roof. Now it’s probably in the back of most gamers mind because of the lack of any news.

  10. Is there going to be a Nintendo Direct this month at all? Surprised we haven’t heard about one. Not much they could show off, but Donkey Kong, Watch Dogs Wii U footage finally and Mario Kart 8 stuff…maybe some Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2 stuff.

    1. Nintendo has been cold recently. They probably won’t have anything until after Christmas :( Such a shame. This year has been pretty lackluster for Wii U aside from Pikmin 3, Wind Waker and 3D World.

Nintendo should have released AT LEAST 10 AAA blockbusters. Hopefully next year will be different.

  11. Not only F-Zero, but I’m also hoping for Metroid and Starfox too. F-Zero, Metroid, and Starfox are like the holy trinity of Nintendo hardcore franchises.

    1. Same here. Nintendo should definitely bring back F-Zero, Metroid and Starfox for next year. We have Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong and even Kirby on 3DS. They have X, Zelda Wii U, Miyamoto’s new iP, FExSMT, and Bayonetta 2. That is 12 games right there. I would be fine if they had all these games and nothing else, but we know they can do better.

How about a Kid Icarus Wii U game; a sequel to Uprising? I would LOVE to see the Ice Climbers make it into 3D and have an adventure similar to the Zelda franchise and a Pokemon game on the Wii U. Not some cheap knock off, a new Stadium or Snap or something “good.” If none of the idea I mentioned, perhaps Nintendo has some other surprises in store?

The first paragraph details the treat we are in for next year, but the second paragraph would put Nintendo over the top into excellence. 2014 is most definitely going to be one of the defining moments of the Wii U and perhaps the greatest year in Nintendo history in recent memory.

  12. Too bad Ubisoft has already stated that this game on Wii U looks closer to current gen than next gen (apparently the babies commenting above forgot that )lololol. What can you expect from the underpowered running on 7 year old hardware excuse of a toy console called the Wii U. Not to mention that probably only 5 people will buy this game on Wii U, as the Wii U is the baby console of choice and only baby games sell well on it (well some of them lolol). Babies only buy their precious little baby games lololol. To get an online multiplayer game going on this game all these 5 people would have to hope and beg that all 5 of them get online at the same time lololol.

    1. Last I checked, mature adults were challenging each other on SM3DW. Mature adults also gave that game top-notch reviews. As of late, the only “baby games” I’ve seen on the Wii U were the far overdone CoD games.

Good luck finding your life, I think I saw it somewhere in Dipland.

    2. When i read this i feel my thoughts become dimmer and my IQ points drop like a rock. Honestly the Wii U is not 7 year old hardware its 1 and a half at best. Looking forward to the juvenile rebuttal like your gay or something what ever it is IL just laugh and go meh five seconds later.

    3. Hope for your sake that you’re just trolling here.
Otherwise you might be borderline retarded, way over the border actually.

  13. I’m glad they decided to delay the game. Seeing how GTA turned out with some minor glitches and such, a longer development time, and a look at what small problems GTA had at launch will really benefit how this game will play, look, and feel.

  14. I cannot imagine any scenario in which this game is good. Youre aiming at devices and then watching their cutscenes, hoping that a scripted event gets triggered while you drive around in a huge, gorgeously detailed chicago that has nothing to do but drive around, aim at devices and watch cutscenes that trigger scrpted events.

Im probably just a jaded ass, and i do wish this game the best, i just really dont see this turning out to be anything above mediocre. Especially with what we’ve seen of it in demos designed to make it look as slick as possible.

  15. They delayed it because the Xbots threatened them to it and when they finally release it, all versions will have improved while the Wii U version will be untouched this whole time…

So that they can blame our empire once again for their lack of sales…

  16. they delayed purely because a lot of games like CoD, battlefield, AC4, GTA were out at that time. That’s all. They sure will take that time to add some features, but i’m interested to see how far this game will go, it’s a new franchise after all. Doesn’t look very interesting.
As for WiiU version im 99% sure its Xbox360 port. AC4 was baked in 1 year, it had all time to be optimized for WiiU yet they still chose to make it a xbox360 port, yet this time they used the extra ram at least a little bit with slightly more details. But they aint motivated to make it a good game for WiiU when you make it good or not in any case mostly console has children audience and hardcore nintendo fans

  17. My only hope is that days after it’s release we don’t get a story like Watch Dogs on Wii U account 000000.1% of sales i merely jest but seriously i think it will be fine.
