IGN Game Of The Year Nominees Announced

Popular online gaming site IGN has posted their own personal Game of the Year nominees for 2013.  Unsurprisingly, there’s a couple of Nintendo games on the list which include Super Mario 3D World for Wii U and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the Nintendo 3DS. Grand Theft Auto V seems to be scooping up a few Game of the Year awards, so it will certainly be interesting to see how IGN vote.

  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • DOTA 2
  • Tearaway
  • The Last of Us
  • Device 6
  • Tomb Raider
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Gone Home
  • Bioshock Infinite

      1. Not that great, creative as hell that’s for sure but I found the gameplay to be a bit lacking. I’m gonna finish it eventually though. Media Molecules creativity rivals that of Nintendo.

    1. I actually went through the full Bioshock Infinite game and I didn’t like it much. I was so fucking confused with the end. Finally understood it, but I didn’t enjoy the story.

    2. It’s either you’re strictly console or really ignorant, because these other titles like Dota2 and Tearaway could easily top your stupid grand theft auto…

    1. Yep. IGN is quite predictable and they will choose something that fits the paradigm of “Costly M-Rated Realistic Graphics” game. Either The Last Of Us (which is great) or GTAV (with is dull plot) will be chosen. This is a waste of time.

  1. “Grand Theft Auto V seems to be scooping up a few Game of the Year awards”

So far I saw it win GOTY on the VGX and nowhere else, but I’m not following all outlets (some I outright refuse to). The Last of Us won at the other places I follow. Where else did GTA V won?

              1. Forza 5 is the only one out of those titles that is somewhat significant; It just fell flat in delivering though. Still not GOTY material or a highly anticipated title for most.

I’ll concede that it is an exclusive and staple franchise that was released this year from Microsoft though. I forgot about that game (sad, since I was just playing it yesterday).

            1. We’re talking game of the year material, here. They weren’t even highly anticipated games for many.

If you call those significant in that respect, then feel free to include games like Knack and the Playroom too.

              1. Playroom is hardly a game first off. Also, You’re saying Knack is not significant? Insignificant means lack of importance, you think the new deadrising and a new IP are lacking importance it seems.

                1. In the grand scheme of game of the year nominees (which this article is about and what the topic of discussion was), yes. They are very insignificant. Might as well name every single game that was released this year as a nominee.

                    1. Okay. So Dead Rising 3, Kinect Rivals Sports (which isn’t even out yet), Forza 5, and Ryse: Son of Rome are on your Game of the Year list. Cool beans.

                      1. Where did you get tha from? I’m saying DR, Ryse, and Forza are significant franchises. My game of the year would probably be Super Mario 3D World or The last of us.

                          1. Dead rising and Forza have been nominated before in the past. But i won’t try to change your opinion on GOTY anymore. I’m surprised actually, you research these type of things alot.

                            1. Previous installments have been nominated in certain categories – but I can’t recall any major outlet ever nominating them as an overall game of the year candidate.

With that said, Dead Rising 3 and Forza 5 are brand new games in each franchise. You can’t presume that new installments will get the same consumer anticipation, reception, or perform the same quality-wise (whether good or bad) with each new installment. Things change.

                                1. Well, on the whole, Game of the Year is fairly subjective. But from a critically objective standpoint, neither game would be included in an overall game of the year award by most media outlets.

(Side Note: DR3 is Capcom, as you said, so it really doesn’t belong in the discussion anyway. We were talking about MS games originally before you responded to me)

                                    1. “Funny how they picked console and handheld exclusives from Sony and Nintendo but nothing from Microsoft, lol.”

When saying “from Microsoft,” I understood it as, games from Microsoft. Published by Microsoft. Not, “no Xbox exclusives” regardless of who it was made/published by. I may be wrong, but that’s what I understood.

We won’t know for sure until he chimes back in, if he does.

                    2. It has to be GTV. It has so many accomplishments
Amazing game. Pushed the systems to the limit
                      cleaned up on metacritic
                      sold nearly 15mil
                      killer marketing campaign
First entertainment property to make 1billion in 3 days.
                      WELL DONE

                      1. Super Mario Galaxy won IGN’s GOTY award in 2007. It was up against Bioshock, Mass Effect, and the Orange Box (Portal, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2). It could happen again.

                        1. 2007 was a great year for gaming. It was also up against CoD 4 – whatever you think of CoD now (and I always hated it) you can’t argue that CoD 4 very much revolutionised the FPS genre – most FPS’s now bear a lot of resemblance to CoD 4. Also, Halo 3 didn’t even get nominated for the list. Nevertheless, Galaxy was the worth winner that year.

                    3. Personally I can’t stand MOBA’s, therefore DOTA 2 doesn’t even get a look in my eyes. I haven’t played The Last of Us but it sounds like a power story-driven experience quite different from all the other games out there. If I’m right in that interpretation, then that or Nintendo please.

Also, Pikmin 3? You’re telling me that Device 6, Tearaway, and Tomb Raider are all better than Pikmin 3? No, what they’re telling me is that they want to make sure they offend nobody by including things from all consoles.

                    4. GTA V will win because it was the one that sold the most, it sold like crazy, and it got the best scores, so it is going to win. But at least we had these amazing games for Nintendo this year. For me Pokemon X/Y and Fire Emblem: Awakening are Games Of The Year for the 3DS. I still don’t have a Wii U, so I don’t know which one would be mine.

                    5. No PS4/XboxOne game (even the overrated CoDG and BF4) & Pokemon X&Y = DEAD GAME except for Wii U fans
Most flop game included in this list: TEARAWAY

JAPAN’s ENTRIES: SM3DW and Zelda A Link Between Worlds
