Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, appeared as a guest on the Japanese multi-media internet talk show, Kurokawa Juku and praised the Wii U. Yoshida was asked Japanese game magazine Game Lab why Wii U sales numbers were so poor. Yoshida replied by saying that Super Mario 3D World is really good and he believes that the Wii U is just getting started. Yoshida previously revealed that he owns two Wii U consoles.
“The latest Mario game is really good, too. I think the Wii U is just getting started.”
“People can get together and enjoy [the Wii U], it’s got plenty of wonderful games. Nintendo helps raise and teaches the fun of games to people just starting out. I think that’s a very important thing in this industry.”

I think that it’s possible that Sony sees the writing on the wall that the Western developers, media, and retailers are in agreement to rout Nintendo out of the gaming market and if they succeed, Sony would be next. Whether Microsoft is behind it or not remains to be seen, but there clearly is an agenda against Nintendo and Sony either out of loyalty of a fellow Eastern company or out of survival is looking to bridge a gap between Nintendo and themselves that has existed for 20+ years.
Who knows, maybe Sony and Nintendo could be working behind the scenes to form some sort of partnership again. With the combined efforts of Sony 1st and 2nd party studios and Nintendo 1st and 2nd party studios they could be totally self-sufficent and never need nary game from a Western developer again if the West is determined to keep up this selfish course of action towards Nintendo.

It is actually a clever move from Yoshida. He just reinforces the idea that Wii U, and more generally Nintendo, is made for people “just starting out” video games.

Because, as you might have noticed it, for years now, people seem to be mono-console. Like they can’t buy more than one console to put in their house. People constantly bitch on every console which they don’t own and then claim to be gamers. It’s pathetic, but it’s how it works right now.
Also, PS4 and Xbone sold 2M in the first month they were released, Wii U sold a little more than 4M after a year. And even though we wouldn’t consider the PS4/Xbox One sales, Wii sold 20M after a year if I’m not mistaking. Wii U sold 5 times worse. Needless to say Nintendo expected way more. They don’t even want to communicate the numbers precisely, competitors would just laugh and more shareholders would leave.

Hardcore is enjoying all games, for their gameplay, regardless of genre, or age rating.
A kid who plays nothing but all WiiU and 3DS games, from Pokemon, to Fire Emblem ect is just as “hardcore” to an older Playstation only gamer, who plays all genres, and visa versa.
If “hardcore” gamers meant people who are all “bang blood troy baker mature” or whatever, then what does playing Mario one second, then old SNES JRPG’s the next then Dark Souls after that make someone?
Exactly this. I know a bunch of – what I would consider – hardcore gamers who don’t even like to play these violent or mature rated games. But they do live, breathe, and play a lot of other games that fit their personal preference.
Then there are some who I know that only play mature or violent games just as much. They’re both avid gamers, but in their own area. Not everyone has to like the same games, but just because someone doesn’t like the games you play – or that are popular with a certain crowd or the mainstream, that doesn’t make them any less of a hardcore gamer.

Pikmin 3 is not casual. I let “causuals” play me in Pikmin 3, and um, after one mission mode, we had to quit because he didn’t know what he was doing. So we played NSMBU after that. So um no Pikmin 3 ain’t causal. We would have played 3D Mario World but I have to wait till the 25th. Pikmin3 rulz and too bad it is so underated by many. If it was online, I could get a real challenge.
It’s not casual, but it is niche which is part of the problem with it. The entire Pikmin series has sold less than 5 million copies worldwide. Obviously fans of the series enjoy it but the average gamer has no interest for it.

I’m telling you now, I had more fun playing on the 360 than I did on the PS3. That was because at some point with the PS3, Sony decided that they needed to promote this notion that gaming is supposed to be “cool” and “elite” and that more games = automatic high quality. Combined with a hardware that alienated many third-parties, and you can see why I love the PS4 so much more than the PS3, a feeling slightly dampened by the fact that Sony’s still trying to make gaming be this hardcore cool thing. If Sony cares about gaming so damn much, then why don’t they even identify with their properties? Why do they treat their products as only sophisticated, elite items to sell instead of celebrating the experiences in each game? From Nintendo gamers I always hear about how they tackled a certain Zelda dungeon or how they beat a Mario level in two minutes or even their favorite moments from Other M (I still think it’s an abomination, but there can be fond memories for people from that game), but most things I heard from Sony gamers are how awesome the hardware or graphics are, or how Playstation has so many games or so many exclusives. Well, that’s great, but how many people actually identify with the experiences in those exclusives or games? I don’t hear many people talking about how they want to be like Nathan Drake or whatever character is in Killzone or being Cole McGrath. Lots of cool moments people found in those games weren’t even through their gameplay experience, but through the game’s cutscenes or stories, which already exist independently of the player’s experiences anyway. It’s all about people bragging about how much more they have than others, but no real fondness for what they’re playing. They see gaming as a sign of power rather than chilling out and playing for fun. I can’t stand gaming being used for that sort of thing; it gets unnecessarily stifled all because somebody wants to show off when the real star of the show is the game’s fun. That’s the rhetoric Sony claims it’s spouting, but it’s practicing it very differently; more like celebrating the very general and completely abstract ideal of gaming instead of specific gaming experiences. Let’s hope the PS4 is going to do things much differently than the PS3; it’s got all the time in the world.

Well, knowing, in fact, that he think sony should go third party and put their games in every device as posible, including the Nintendo consoles, that Nintendo do good is good for Sony.
But if the PS4 does in fact start bringing back all the money Sony lost with the PS3, maybe a PS5 is a Yes, Yes.
I love my Wii U and my opinion of SONY has just gone up two levels.

as long as sales numbers are stable and nintendo keeps releasing games i can’t imagine anyone in their right mind really gives a fuck where PS4 sales numbers are in comparison (except you perhaps.. but then again maybe you’re just not in your right mind)
Big deal. PS4 is good when another GTA cocnept game comes out. Until then Watch Dogs for my Wii U is mines. I don’t care if it has less resolution or textures. As long as I can go in the city, steal cars, kill innocent and shot at other armed people just so we can start a war with each other, that’s fun.
Remeber on GTA, if you go into a store and put your gun up, the casher will put his arms up. But once you bring the gun down, the alarm goes off. After that shoot the cashier and get the hell out of there. Then shoot anyone and shoot their cars until it blows up. Make an innocent person say, “Whhat is wrong witht he world today?” I love GTA concept like games.
Nintendo needs to think about making a GTA like concept game. My favorite GTA like game is the God Father. Just go up to a gang, fire one shot to start a war.
they could certainly use something with a realistic open world setting, but not zelda
zelda gameplay is a bit too constricted for a real open world setting i think (and not exactly realistic)
could be a thing for a new franchise, i’m curious to see what they can add to the genre
I have no problem with realistic like games as long as it is fun. If it is not fun and it is a bore, I won’t be putting that realistic game just to look at graphics. I play games and become a part of the game. and memorise the game. Like I do on Banjo-Kazooie.

doesn’t mean you’d have to abandon all fantasy elements or whatever you can think of.. just that the core of the game is based on trying to be realistic
it’s hard to put down really.. take skyrim as an example.. it’s gritty and realistic but also with lots of fantasy elements
or maybe dishonored.. same thing.. and it features its own unique art style.. like i said, doesn’t have to be a realistic art style.. at least not if you ask me :)
zelda never felt like such a game and i think it would be wrong to try and squeeze zelda into such a setting

He owns 2 Wii U’s for reverse engineering. One to play with at home and the other is for tearing it down and see how it works.

He owns a Japanese Wii U and a North American one. He likes to get systems from each region.

I bet most of the Sony guys (at least the playstation team) all grew up with Nintendo games, of course they love and respect them.
Hideo Kojimo (Metal gear solid director) calls Super Mario Bros the big bang of modern video games and Miyamoto is his biggest idol.
These guys are hopefully all real gamers who love all kinds of games and not only the ones that happen to come from their company
If even half of the playstation Fanboys out there shared this execs wise opinion we might have more multiplatform gamers, and less haters.
I’ve always been a huge Nintendo fan and sony fan, my brothers been a huge sony fan and a nintendo fan. It very nice that the two sit down and know when the other is great.
So basically it’s a lose lose situation for Sony. A lot of you guys feel like he’s faking but if he had taken a shot at Nintendo then you’d be mad at him as well. I don’t fully understand!

Its always pleasant to see the president of SCE Worldwide always boasting about the WiiU, in a humble, non-snobby way; and how he confidently believes Nintendo will be successful and is only ‘just beginning’ in stark contrast to the uninformed SCEA president Jack Tretton.
Seriously, imagine how he must have felt when belittling the Wii, when it turned out to be the most successful last-gen console? Pretty moronic (as my sonny boy Icezama) I’d say.. Whatever, that just so happens to be Nintendo’s part-time job :) defying the odds with every new home/mobile console.
