Wii U Performing Slightly Better Than PS3 And Vita For First 54 Weeks in Japan?

A member of NeoGAF has been crunching the numbers and has concluded that Wii U sales are apparently rivalling the life-to-date performance in Japan of both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita in the first 54 weeks. The console initially got off to a less than impressive start, but has since seen sales increase as the holidays approach. It will be interesting to see how the console fares once the PlayStation 4 is released in Japan in February.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  1. I don’t believe this, I’ve read many ”WHY THE WIIU IS SHIT AND IS DOOOOOOOMED EVEN THOUGH ITS AWESOME!!!” articles.

    :P

  2. Nice to hear (assuming numbers are reliable). However, just to put it in perspective a little.Japan was not PS3’s biggest market by a long shot. It sold a little over 6 million to date in Japan, 13.5 million in the US, and 30 million in Europe. Not wishing to crap on the achievement at all, I do think Nintendo is doing a better job lately, just thought a little perspective might help

  3. The PS3 also was also $150-$250 more expensive than the Wii U at launch. Not to be pessimistic but that should be taken into account.

    1. To be a little optimistic then i think we should also take into account that PS3 was following PS2 the most successfull home console ever.
Sony owned the marked like no other since Atari, infact PS2 outsold Gamecube and Xbox combined x3.
To beat that can´t be bad.

Kinda makes you wonder why PS3 is not called a failure more often, it has sold 80M units while PS2 sold 155M. Sony lost 49% of their install base.

I don´t think a single person in the world would have guessed that Sony would loose to Nintendo after the PS2 massacre

I hope Wii U has some hope to do some decent numbers

      1. sony didnt really lose to nintendo. they lost to microsoft, cos they both sold 80 million consoles. and that’s the “gamers” that bought those, they competed with each other with numerous games on both consoles that were the same. wii was just a console for grandmas and children, and the rest of casuals who want to lose weight or something, just a completely different audience.

          1. Indeed. I am a gamer myself and bought a Wii U. There was nothing about PS4 and X1 that really made me go for it. The hardware in the other consoles aren’t exactly groundbreaking in my opinion. Then again we’ve entered the console era in which it’s not about making powerful hardware, and spending so much time making the graphics looks pretty but awful gameplay – because I can see that happening (Ryse for example).

It’s all about making new game experiences and doing stuff that was not possible before – that is what gaming is about now.

If I did care about hardware, then I’d say it’s about what the hardware can do, not the speed of it.

  4. Finally. Wii U is getting what it deserves. Just like the HumbleFellow said, the ps3 was one of the best selling consoles ever. Look what’s happening. The Wii U will get there.

    1. Yep, it’s because the software purely wasn’t ready at the time – that’s all it really was.

Now that we’re coming to the end of the year where some great games are coming out and the sales are rising, that’s put a lovely little rise in Wii U console sales. If that maintains and I think it will, then line that up with the 2014 titles, and what do you know, Nintendo have done a 3DS with Wii U.

Lets just hope in the next few years when they do new hardware, that they get the software lined up at the same time as the hardware. If they don’t then the console sales get affected pretty badly. And in all honesty what happened with Wii U could have been easily avoided, but then again as there weren’t many titles, I guess there is a possibility that advertising a console that didn’t have a lot back in the day may have not been a great idea, and if that’s the reason why, then I can see why Nintendo took action later – still avoidable.

  6. just face it Nintendo is do good with the Wii U or the haters making a comment and predictions about Nintendo Wii U Nintendo continue to prove them wrong that’s because they don’t know the business as Nintendo know the business

    1. Big deal, I’m just waiting for my 3D world, Zelda U, Smash bros, and X.and Dr. Luigi and Mario Kart 8 and Tropical Freeze. I’ll be good until 2015. I really don’t give a rats ass about lack of 3RD party no more. I’ll get watch dogs for Wii U because I like to kill innocent people and run away from the police. I also like stealing cars. I can care less about the story mode on GTA and Watch Dogs and True Crime and the God Father. I just like to do bad stuff in the city streets. Fight people for no reason. Steal cars, kills kill kills. They make me laugh. And I really could care less if Ubisoft gives their favorite console (PS4 1080P 60fps) and give the Wii U 480p.

  7. GTA like games bring back memories. I remember playing True Crime on Gamecube. I threw a bomb to blow up some cars. A lady said, “What’s wrong with the world today?!!” I was cracking up. I love GTA concept games. I choose to be a bad guy or a good guy. But I like being a bad guy on GTA concept games.

    1. I play GTA concept games to be bad fuck the story. Sometimes if you shoot at the wrong person, they’ll fire shots back at you. I remember, on the God Father, I used to go to gangs selling drugs and shoot just to start some shit. It was a ton of drug dealers.

      1. On Vice City, I used to just get prositutes and kill them and get my money back. On vice city I’ll try to get up to 5 stars so that the swat team will try to kill me. I loved it. Now all you care about is resolution, and graphics and shit. Graphics bore me if the game ain’t fun to play.

  8. I remember on True Crime, I was doing a story mode, and their was a lady sing opera while their was a shooting going on. I took my gun, aimed at the woman and killed her. The singing stopped after that. The reason I bought AC3 for Wii U was I was thinking it was a GTA concept game too. It wasn’t.

    1. Lego City undercover only sucked because you can’t kill people on their. It’s a kiddy game. If I’m going to get into realistic games, it better be a GTA like game. Fuck FPS like COD You can’t kill innocent people and explore the city.

  9. What are you lot on about, the WiiU has been out a year & it is beating a nine year old system ok the tech in the WiiU is five years old, but the PS4 will walk al lover the WiiU when it’s released in Japan, the PS4 & X1 sold more in a weekend than the WiiU did in a year here in the UK.

The WiiU is already dead & i am a WiiU (since launch) owner !

    1. The comparision is P3 first 54 weeks (2006-2007) against Wii U first 54 weeks (2012-2013) and same with the Vita. It wasn’t stated very well in the article above. Click on a link to read the full article and it would more clearer.

  10. Oh look, the console that is failing is doing better than the console that did not fail in a much better economy!
Yay for naysayers, since they’re totally right!
