Iwata Says Nintendo “Hasn’t Been Targeting Children Enough”

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explained during a conference held in Osaka this morning that one of the problems with the Kyoto based company is that it hasn’t targeted children enough. Iwata remains resolute and says that he’s “thinking on how to make the company stand up again.” We should hear how Nintendo plans to turn itself around during the investors meeting which takes place tomorrow.

“We haven’t been targeting children enough.”

Update 3: Various NeoGAF members have been trying to clarify Iwata’s statement and it’s as follows: “We haven’t been targeting children enough” or “Our approach to targeting children has been inadequate”

Update 2: Dual Shockers stand by their translation and say that Iwata said Nintendo hasn’t been targeting children enough. This is verified by a NeoGAF member too.

Update 1: It appears as though Dual Shockers may have mistranslated the original article. Apologies.

    1. I bloody hope you’re right. They need to step away from this part and go back for the core gamers.

I seriously hope you’re right. I doubt Iwata is that stupid.

        1. This sounds worse than sounding Pedo.
And hasnt Nintendo been targeting Kids this whole time…Those stupid kiddy ads are embarrassing. 2014 should be the year for hardcore gamers…we have waited too long.

          1. I was joking about that. I don’t mind that the systems are All Ages. I personally consider myself an Arcade Gamer not a Core/Hardcore/Computer gamer. So I like Nintendo for the most part for their ability to make pick up and play type games, especially since I don’t have the time I use to have.

I haven’t seen an Ad on TV, Hulu or wherever in along time for a NIntendo Product. There internet presence or advertising part does much better than the traditional media group.

              1. 任天堂・岩田社長「どのように任天堂を立て直すかしか考えていない、子どもたちへのアプローチが十分ではなかった」

Nintendo・Iwata-kaichou 「donoyou ni Nintendo wo tatenaosu ka shika kangaeteinai, kodomotachi e no APUROOCHI ga juubun dewa nakatta 」

“Nintendo: President Iwata ‘We haven’t been thinking of anything other than re-raising Nintendo, our aproach towards children was not enough'”

Yes, he said exactly that. I’m currently reading the entire news, but as far as I’ve read, that’s how it’s going…

                1. Approach to children has not been enough, not as in they need to focus more on children , but as in focusing on children hasn’t been enough to keep them going strong. He is saying they need to expand their brand past their huge audience of younger gamers, as in the “hardcore” gamers

                  1. I hope that your right. Like I honestly hope they don’t look at it as if their not doing well because they need E rated Mario games.
they should take their top directors and tell them to make all new IP, just come up with something new even aynoma.
then get their up and coming directors to focus on old IP and to partner with 3rd party studios to get more diversity in those older IP based games.

          2. Well we know Mario cart is coming, which may be Mario but it well have online and such.

smash brothers well still get a T rating for sure.
DK-TF fell still probably get an E rating though.
Zelda well be at least announced at E3 and that well again at least be a T rating.
x may get a M rating, but its hard to tell.

third party well be bringing odd world games those are M rated, as well as cube, and a few others. As well as watchdogs

technically they haven’t canceled ghost recon online….yet so it may still be coming, and would be an exclusive (but may come to Xbox any way)

    2. The wii u was meant to fail. It was designed to placehold the market until they could build a better more competative machine. If it took off more power to it. But Fusion if confirmed could be released by 2015 and have a host of moved wii u games games presented at launch…

      1. Maybe….maybe shown off at E3 2015 ….of course their would be no games in development since they can betry their Wii U customers. But it wouldn’t come out no earlier then holiday 2016. But I can tell you right now its coming out at in 2017. Right in the middle of the 10 year life cycle of the Xbox One and PS4, it well have more power then them, based on X86, and their new gamepad well most likely be a full use tablet and controller, and they well also probably introduce all new remotes, pro controller, balance board, nunchuck, and maybe a upgraded sensor bar that’s more like Kinect, but probably more simple then the Kinect.

    3. they haven’t been targeting children enough?!!! wtf iwata?! children aren’t going to convince their parents to buy 60 dollar games often! if anything, they need to target adults more, adults have the money!

    4. Looks like the translate is wrong: 「子どもたちへのアプローチが十分ではなかった」”Targeting children isn’t enough,” not “We’re not targeting children enough.” – Robert Ward

    1. I can safely say meroid is in development. there are leaks of pokemon for wii u and that either KI or SF are secretly developed.

  1. NO! FUCK CHILDREN! AND FUCK CASUALS! They’re not the ones who care if Nintendo goes out of business! REAL GAMERS DO!

CHILDREN DON’T BUY THE STUFF! They make their parents do it, and if they deem it “too expensive” they won’t do it. Because the parents are fucking casuals too!

    FOCUS ON THE REAL GAMER!

  2. So this morning when I read he took a pay cut I had massive respect for him. Now I’m wondering if he has started taking Marijuana.

    1. You don’t seem to know how pot works, second he means their approach to children was not enough, as in the market for children is not enough to support the company.

  3. So sensoring everything Nintendo related and releasing a bunch of garbage casual games isn’t targeting Kids enough.

    1. Me too. Seriously, how can this be his conclusion of the situation? And even if he does – kids want what the older kids play so…

  4. Iwata just quit your fucking job!!! Do you even understand why people doesn’t like Nintendo anymore??? Is because you keep on targeting to children all the time!!! Come on think about the adults too… What the hell is wrong with you???

  5. Translated the last paragraph:

“Iwata President Denies Resignation as “not Thinking only of the Nintendo or rebuild How”. Said, “Approach to Children WAS not enough,””

This means that putting games out for kids was not the only way forward, meaning that he is still wanting to rebuild Nintendo and go for the core game. No where does it say in that statement about them not marketing for children..

He simply says it was NOT ENOUGH.

    1. Actually now that I have read the statement over and over again, I think there is a sign of ambiguity. He isn’t saying whether or not they’ve marketed for kids correctly or that marketing ONLY for them wasn’t enough to make people buy Wii U.

There is a double meaning – hope he can clear that up.

    2. You google translated the document, yes? It’s almost always inaccurate. I imagine sickr might have gotten it wrong as well. I will wait for the official English press release.

      1. The translation is from Dual Shockers who generally translate Japanese articles. Hopefully it’s taken out of context, but I personally can’t be sure.

        1. um. so is it mistranslation or not? sry I sent in contacts and tiops about this but didn’t refresh to notice the uupdates.

I HOPE HE SAID …”isn’t” enough like a lot of people on VARIOUS sites say.

  6. Well children do love shooters and blood so maybe…no, time for jokes lets hope its mistranslation, u want to aim more higher

  7. The Wii U is currently suffering because it’s built for gamers, marketed for kids & the other game developers think it’s for casual gamers. Nintendo needs to make it clear that that’s NOT how things are.

    1. In what fanciful universe is the Wii U built for gamers?

I’ll concede Nintendo tried to build a machine for everyone, but they ended up building a machine for no one.

      1. In the world where decents graphics are acceptable and a game is played because it’s good, not because of how pretty it looks.

  8. This has to be a mistake or something. That’s all that’s ON the Wii U is games centered towards kids. And he thinks they haven’t targeted children ENOUGH? Granted, I love games like Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze etc. And I despise most of the games that people consider to be for the “adult” audience. But still, this has to be a mistranslation or something. It makes no sense.

  9. I sure hope this is a misinterpretation of the actual statement…if true…Iwata is completely off track and is showing real incompetence in judging Nintendo’s market. I might call for a change in management if this is the case.

    1. Though I laughed my head off at first, I am gratuitously thankful that it’s a mistranslation.

However, as much as I prefer to avoid throwing assumptive heat at this site, I have a feeling this article won’t be amended for a while yet, for the sake of views.

  10. They need to make money and this isn’t a bad idea. It worked the first time. Plus its not like they are abandoning core gamers. Probably a lot of the consoles sold on the other systems are due to the fact that many are children. Wii U can use that market too.

    1. The problem is that the “casual” market will no longer support nintendo. Heck, most of them still don’t realize the Wii U is a separate console and not a Wii add-on. The novelty of the Wii has worn out for them. They have moved on to the mobile/tablet market. What Nintendo needs to do is go back to their legacy, flesh out their virtual console, and push out the quality 1st party titles that utilize the Wii U gamepad. To get 3rd party developers on their side, they need to show why the Wii U is a platform worth developing, why it can do things the PS4 and XBone can’t do.

  11. UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEE THHHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEE ARRRRRRRRRTTTTILLLLLLLLLLCCCCCCCCEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    MASSIVE MISTRANSLATION!!!!!

  12. Pingback: Iwata says Nintendo hadn't been targeting children enough

  13. I’m 90% sure it’s a mistranslation. Iwata can’t be this stupid. He probly means “Targeting kids isn’t enough” or “We had enough of targeting kids” or something.

  14. kids I’d like to see a “kid” beat the final level of super mario 3d world or be able to plan a pikmin mission mode level good.

    1. My 4 year old niece has beaten the last levels of SM3DW numerous times. You know why? Because the game is too fucking easy. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the shit out of it, but its not challenging what so ever you have to be terrible at games not to beat it.

      1. I call bull shit on that. Did she unlock the last world? And beat Champion’s Road? Make a video proving it, cause that’s BS. The last levels as in Flower World and Star World and Mushroom World weren’t too hard, but don’t even try and tell me Champion’s Road is easy, or the 30 Star Mystery House. They are doable for sure, but I doubt any 4 year old can do that, especially since that’s the age most people start gaming.

  15. mistranslation or not nintendo is a kids company and will always be a kids company. the sooner they fire these clowns running things the better for the company.

    1. Well you said it yourself. If Nintendo is a kids company and always has been a kids company why would becoming an “adults” company automatically be better?

Adult companies are not necessarily better. Just look at Disney. It thrives off of marketing towards kids. Nintendo could be huge if they marketed their stuff, took risks and spent money like Disney.

Also, FYI Disney is entertaining for us adults as well… nothing wrong with kids companies that attract all ages.

      1. keep telling yourself that. I’m sure it’s going to help nintendo in the long run or further drag them into obscurity.

          1. I announced that Nintendo halved a reward of President Satoshi Iwata for five months on 29th. Poor sale of the game console sounds; operating profit and loss of March, 2014 period of 35 billion yen in order that become in the red, and consecutive deficits are anticipated for three quarters. Two or three rewards of nine other directors let you decrease by percent. President Iwata spoke it with [I took a loss seriously and made distinction] at a press conference. Because it was expected that achievements drop greatly for the authority of period in August, 11 in Nintendo, it is reduced to half for a president reward. I returned it to 30% decrease in last July. This reward decrease is a plan of from February to June, but it is said that I decide it to see achievements after a general meeting of stockholders of June afterwards. President Iwata denies the resignation as [I think about how you stand up Nintendo again]. I speak it with [approach to children wasn’t enough] and do it when I show long-term rebuilding plan during by management policies briefing session to open in Tokyo on 30th.

  16. I think Nintendo should start facing reality: no one wants a game console that only plays games, and does nothing else. The mainstream crowd wants to be entertained in several ways, not just with video games.
    Iwata is right.
It’s true that pretty much every Nintendo brand has lost a lot of appeal, because it’s not as popular with kids anymore. Most of those who play Mario, Zelda etc are gamers that grew up with the NES, SNES, N64 etc., and haven’t let go. Other gamers who grew up doing this era, is acknowledging the games and that they’re good, but would rather play more mainstream, multiplayer focused titles as it’s the trend and the most popular games.
So if kids don’t buy these games and mainstream gamers don’t buy these games anymore, who’s left to buy Wii U? The hardcore Nintendo fans. It’s a niche crowd, and every Nintendo franchise have therefore become a niche franchise, as it is appearantly only appealing the fans. Those who’s sitting at this site. And that’s why the Wii U, has been such a failure from the start. It’s the same thing that happend with the GameCube; people grew up with Sega and Nintendo systems, but when new consoles with a more “mature” appeal entered the market, a lot of teenagers and mainstream gamers made the jump to these console, leaving mostly hardcore Nintendo and Sega fans and few mainstreamers to buy the GameCube and dreamcast. I had become niche.
With the Wii, the motion controls became a toyish gimmick which resembled something out of the future, and therefore a must have and that’s why it sold so well. It was cheap, family friendly and fun for a week, and then never to be played again. If you look besides the obvious best selling games like Wii Sports, Wii Fit etc., the Wii didn’t sell that many games, compared to the amount of consoles. It was and is a toy, but it sold like hotcakes. But not as big a hit with the hardcore Nintendo fans.
So I am guessing with the Wii U, Nintendo thought “everyone thinks of us as a toy company, letting all kinds of shovelware release on our console. We gotta win back the gamers, but still have a gimmicky appeal, so we can sell it to the masses” – and thus came forth Wii U.
The controller is gimmicky, and the name was so that I would sell once again, because people would regonise the brand and be all “oh another Wii! That’s a must have!”. But Nintendo couldn’t catch up with Xbox and Playstation, as they started developing into all-in-one-combined-media-boxes, that made them both appeal to mainstream audiences as well as hardcore gamers.
And now they lost all the mainstream costumers, and left is only the hardcore fans, which is not a whole lot anymore. Nintendo has lost its appeal as a gaming brand among the mainstream crowd.
And that is why Iwata is right. They need to start focusing on kids and families again. That’s where the money is, and that’s how they’ll suceed as a company.
Gamers were always complaining about how the Wii was filled with bad titles – well, I guess we got what we wanted; The Wii U. No bad titles, but also: pretty much no titles at all. I’d rather see Nintendo make another family appealing console, with lots of family/kids games and a few first-party gems for the fans, than loose Nintendo in the homeconsole market, but that’s pretty much where this is headed. It’s too late, so long Wii U.

    1. “I think Nintendo should start facing reality: no one wants a game console that only plays games, and does nothing else. ”

pardon? did you ever use a wii U?

the wii u has a pretty good internetbrowser.. one with which surfing is actually fun
the same cannot be said about the xbox one and PS4

      also it supports VOD services

and for watching blurays i have.. guess what.. a bluray player

why would i wait for the wii U to come along to start watching blurays? why would anyone? exactly.. they wouldn’t, it’s a pointless feature because anyone who wants to watch blurays will already have bought a device capable of playing blurays.. they’re 40 bucks for christ’s sake

      1. Ever heard about Europe? ;) America is not Nintendo’s only market. Lots of people buy PS3 for the sole purpose of using them as Blu-Ray players, since they’re way cheaper than a Blu-ray player.
I own a Wii U yes, and it has very few and very limited VOD services in Europe, but Netflix has been added recently, but it’s too late.
But of course there is also the technical aspects; when comparing consoles, ps4 is the best from a technical point of view, followed by XBONE and then Wii U. And gamers care about those things, otherwise we wouldn’t be commenting on these posts would we? Then you can also add content, amount of games, appeal etc. etc. etc. – point being that the Wii U is the worst of the three systems. It’s not that it’s a bad system, but compared to these nextgen consoles, it comes off very flat in terms of features and mainstream appeal, which is everything in the commercial video game business.
I own all thee nextgen systems, and I am huge Nintendo fan and collector. I am not trying to be a douche, I just like to debate the subject, since it’s looking more and more likely that Wii U will be Nintendo’s biggest failure since Virtual Boy, and most people on this site and just fans in general, won’t accept it – which I think is interesting. There is no use in defending the console, as it is in obvious problem when Nintendo even admits it themselves, so why defend it? If you’re a big Nintendo fan, wouldn’t you rather want what’s best for the company so they can live on, and you won’t have to play Mario on smartphones and ps4 in a few years? I know I would. And that’s why, I’ve opened my eyes and realized the Wii U and Nintendo is currently years behind in terms of EVERYTHING, and the Wii U is aa failure, despite that I love the system myself. Nintendo need keep up with times and listen to the mainstream crowd, and not what you and I would want. That’s what have gotten them into this situation.

        1. ” And gamers care about those things, otherwise we wouldn’t be commenting on these posts would we?”

you could say that a vocal minority cares about these things

people didn’t care that the PS2 was technically the weakest console of its generation did they? no they didn’t because it sold like hot cake

          1. Yeah, and ignore the fact that it Sold better because it was a DVD player as well, you’re just proving his point you know.

            1. are you for real now? the first standalone dvd players were available in ’96.. 4 years prior to the PS2s release
when the PS2 was released DVD players were readily available and cheap (could get them for sub 100$)
there was no reason to buy a PS2 for its DVD functionality and most people who wanted to play DVDs at home already had one

i’m not proving anyone’s point but my own

ps1 -> sold much better than the n64
wii -> sold much better than the other consoles of its generation
3ds -> selling *much* better than the vita
NES -> sold *much* better than the sega master system
and still today people are buying wagonloads of xbox 360s and PS3s even though far more capable consoles are already available

              need i go on?

this is proof enough that gamers aren’t looking exclusively for raw performance and to be honest if someone considers a game inferior solely because of its visuals i wouldn’t consider them gamers anyway

don’t presume to speak for everyone else just because you’ve got your bum buddies around you here to support you in your delusional opinion of how the gaming market works

              1. I work in the music industry, so I am basing my opinion partly of what I’ve learned from there. I think you don’t know how things are working in Europe, compared to the US, and Europe is a big market for Nintendo (Don’t get me wrong, US is too). I remember the first I saw a DVD in action, was actually on a PS2. It was the first affordable DVD player I can think of, and I knew lots of people who bought it partly for that reason. Up untill then, DVDplayers we’re these hi-tech beings that was too expensive for anyone to own. It’s like when US got the internet in the 90ies; it first came to many countries in EU, in the early 2000s. EU used to be behind, but times are changing.

But enough about that, though I respect your point of view, and can agree with it to some level, I don’t believe it can be used as an example of today’s mainstream audience, in terms of gaming, music, movies, tv etc.
With smartphones and tablets, all our media needs and social needs have been combined, and that’s something most people heavily rely on when choosing our gaming system. We want that system, to have all to those features implemented that we’ve gotten used too in the past 4-5 years, and we want our gaming systems to be power beast that can do something smartphones and tablets can’t. Though Nintendo is definitely making unique games and the 3DS amazingly enough is still selling well, the Wii U is slacking in terms of hardware, software and social integration, and in today’s market that’s a bust. Even Iwata admitted recently, that they haven’t been good enough at knowing what the western markets want, which is completely true.
An example; when Nintendo had a huge success with the Wii, and said “People like it for the games, they don’t want HD graphics”, but then all of a sudden they found out the people DID want HD graphics, and they completely turned that statement around, and started working on an HD Wii. But it came out WAY too late, and was years behind and that’s the problem.
Wii felt like a toy, compared to Xbox360 and PS3 because they were both ahead of all kinds of trends and followed up on them quickly. Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Twitter, TV – all the things that the mainstream audience wanted. Meanwhile Nintendo kept working on a console for way too long, so when the Wii U released in 2012, it was like Nintendo was saying “look! We get it now! HD-graphics and TV we got all that too!”, but just a few months later Sony blew any chance the Wii U had by introducing PS4 and the share features, more muscle power than ever before and just pleasing all the way round to both hardcore gamers and mainstream. A few months after, Microsoft tries to pull off the same move, and after a turbulent take off, they land at a safe second place right next to Sony at the end of 2013.
Here we are 2014, and Nintendo has admitted they’ve messed up bad. There is nothing to defend, the Wii U is failure for so many reasons. Nintendo is not the trendsetter anymore.

                1. “Here we are 2014, and Nintendo has admitted they’ve messed up bad. There is nothing to defend, the Wii U is failure for so many reasons. Nintendo is not the trendsetter anymore.”

and there’s also no need to make up reasons why it failed

the reason why it failed is certainly not the systems power

  17. Is the quote being mistranslated by websites? Some people are saying that he said, ” targeting children is not enough”

      1. Yep

「子どもたちへのアプローチが十分ではなかった」”Targeting children isn’t enough,” not “We’re not targeting children enough.”

  18. wait.. not enough? Oo

most commercials i’m seeing around here i’d consider being targeted at a younger audience…

they should put more effort into marketing it for the older gamers…

    1. “Update: It appears as though Dual Shockers may have mistranslated the original article. Apologies.”

great so you noticed your error but you did *nothing* to fix it?

      ffs

  19. Well the article is quoting him as saying 「子どもたちへのアプローチが十分ではなかった」 which means that the approach to children hasn’t been sufficient.
Whether or not that’s what he really said or if it was taken out of context, I don’t know. But as far as it being a mistranslation, if that is what he said, it isn’t a mistranslation.

(Japanese fluency points yo yo yo~)

  20. Iwata… shut up.

    SHUT THE EFF UP.

You’ve been targeting kids since before THE FRIGGIN’ WII U EVEN CAME OUT!

Ugh… I nearly snapped my 3DS in two upon reading this…

    1. read it again: mistranslation

but of course no one bothered to update the article because it’s excellent click and flamebait

should probably start looking for a better news site, this is getting ridiculous here

      1. Nope, it’s not a mistranslation. I’m reading the news on a Japanese site, and Iwata said exactly that. Japanese boards are also complaining about Nintendo only targeting kids and leaving core gamers alone.

        1. Source? Btw you’re sadly false since the 2014 plan was to target “harcore” gamers which he stated himself in a little briefing post-2014. God, this is like the BOY WHO CRIED WOLF.

      2. Playeressence.com or Nintendoeverything.com. This site is pure garbage and NOT dedicated at all. It’s only good for the banners.(though player essence has that too._ Come join, it’s so much more open-minded and less biased.

  21. That better be a mistranslation. I support Nintendo as much as anyone, but even I have to admit that they target way too much to children.

Then again, I’m a Kirby fan so I might not be one to talk . :)

  22. “Update 2: Dual Shockers stand by their translation and say that Iwata said Nintendo hasn’t been targeting children enough. This is verified by a NeoGAF member too.”

you do realize that this link only confirms that the translation you put up here is wrong?

the translation according to that post is: the children’s approach hasn’t been enough i.e. they need to do more than just market it for children

        1. but it looks like it could be taken out of context very easily. may people have translated it. You may need to put, may have tooken out of context.

        2. but. either iwata makes no sense or ……….its out of context. we will see tomorrow. :P ( and then hopefully direct on Friday FINALLY!)

  23. This has to be wrong. They need to target more adult consumers. Children are all they seem to target. Yes I grew up with Nintendo, yes I love Mario, yes I love their E rated games. But honestly I know their directors could make some good T and M rated games. Zelda and metroid tend to get T ratings so I know they can make gold. I’m not saying make a cod game but if they partner with the devs of conduit they could easily make the “halo” of Nintendo between conduit and metroid (so long as they have online….which they need to embrace)

they really need online multiplayer because honestly that gets players excited about games, gets them talking about them, and gets them to keep playing, online is like replay value crack.

  24. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!
Is this guy for real? He is completely out of touch. He has made Nintendo into the baby games company and he says he wants more of that? This idiot is delusional. Nintendo is the babies and casuals company HAHAHAHA! More baby games plox!!!

  25. aren’t all Nintendo games rated E for Everyone? … rarely, some are rated Teen? … this leaves M for Mature the only market completely ignored.

    1. Um, not quite. Yes, most of Nintendo’s games do earn E ratings, but there are quite a few that haven’t.

The Metroid Prime games and (ugh) Other M got T. Zelda: Twilight Princess was T. All new Fire Emblem games past Sacred Stones got T. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem for the Cube got M. Geist for the Cube (which I believe was made by Nintendo) was M. Star Fox Adventures and Assault got T. F-Zero GX (by the way Nintendo NEEDS to make a new F-Zero game) got T. Smash Bros. has always gotten T past the original (though I personally think they never merited a T rating- E+10 imo). And I don’t know what Mother 3 was rated in Japan, but that game is DEFINITELY not for little kids.

  26. If Iwata really meant that, I don’t see him as being fit for the role of president of Nintendo. You’re just going to run the company into the ground. You already failed big time trying to squeeze every last ounce of success from the Wii by making the Wii U. If anything, the name choice alone was a terrible idea.

  27. Now this could be interpreted as childish games OR more importantly – reaching out to the younger generations. Why are the rest of of us following Nintendo so closely? Because they caught our attention as kids. Now kids these days haven’t grown fond of Nintendo games so they ditch it in favour of, for example, the much more cooler Playstation 4…

If this is the case, Iwata is spot ON***

  28. I think what he is saying is they have not done their part to attract kids. As in not enough commercials, advertisements on youtube, phones in kid’s toys magazines etc.

Kids now-a-days get whatever they want from their parents because they think things look “cool” on television. If Nintendo doesn’t stand out as a must have toy for kids then how will their parents know to buy them a WIi U?

        1. Lastly I will cum on your face and force you to swallow it. Please Understand BITCH AHAHAHAHAHARRRRRRRIBBBAAAAA!!!

  29. my stepmoms japanese and i had her try to decipher which statement it meant with the original japanese article and it seems to be ambiguous. however, given the context of the article she thinks its leaning more to “we didnt appeal to children enough”

  30. Iwata:”Please Understand Bitches”.

Thank you Iwata, I finally just realized why I play my pc games more than any Nintendo Product.

  31. I agree with his comment. Nintendo has not been appealing to today’s generation of kids. They have been appealing to those who were kids 2-3 generations ago. In this day and age, kids are not as attracted to Mario as much as they are, say, COD; which is very unfortunate, but kids just tend to believe they’re more mature today, despite them acting less mature. And to meet the “status quo” of their peers, they try to participate in more mature activities.

But then again, I’m not too fond of Japanese culture and whether or not it reflects what is going on here in the United States, so take my statement with a grain of salt.

    1. It was a mistranslation when they made the original. It was supposed to be called Monkey Kong. Also, M.Bison from street fighter and Balrog got mixed up as well, M.Bison was supposed to be Balrog (Mike Tyson look-a-like).

      1. Crapcom actually meant to change the names. Forgot why, though. I think it was to avoid suit against Tyson because they never asked to make a character based off him.

  32. i just hope nintendo makes some hardcore games as well i actually play kiddy games here and there and im 24 but do love games with some action.

  33. Damn it. You do not need this. Fire Iwata. I am 12 and think this should be the year for hardcore gamers. Their new commercials are crap. They don’t make me want to buy their games (even though I do) and don’t appeal to anybody except for kids! Screw your head back on iwata.

  34. Damn it. You do not need this. Fire Iwata. I am 12 and think this should be the year for hardcore gamers. Their new commercials are crap. They don’t make me want to buy their games (even though I do) and don’t appeal to anybody except for kids! Screw your head back on iwata.

  35. They just need to stop marketing casual crowds. That audience has moved on to smartphone and tablet games. They can market children, BUT at the same time they need to market the Wii U as an all in one entertainment machine where you can play Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, Batman, AND Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Instead they only market it to families who want to have family game nights with Super Mario 3D World. Sorry Nintendo, but that audience has moved on sadly.

    1. That was the kind of declaration people have been waiting for. Iwata himself stating that Nintendo is a kid’s company. Sad days for old Nintendo gamers.

  36. Guys wii u was always targeted towards kids …….he is saying that the aproach towards kids wasnt enough to get them by …….now that he is looking at trends in the west he realises that they need to market for the core gamers as well as kids instead of alienating core gamers

  37. The live blog investors meeting said the words where mistranslated and meant the opposite …..UHHHHHHHHHH thank god !

    1. Can you get a source for that claim? I would love to believe that this is just all misinterpreted.

The good thing is that Nintendo is recognizing that the gamepad needs to be utilized in games more. It is the selling point of the system after all.

  38. Mario kart 8 will be released in may via gaming realm guys go check it out they are updating everyone about the investors meeting

  39. To be honest it’s not that, children don’t play video games that much, sure they do, but I see teenagers and adults playing more since they grew up with them and now have the money to buy them, so most of them love Mario but we also like some more mature games here and there to have more story or gore or action, anyway, I think Nintendo can target kids plus adults, do both, Mario and Kirby for the kids, Metroid and Eternal Darkness for the adults. See? Also, it seems Iwata doesn’t know how Sony and Xbox fans tend to call them the kiddy company, and he says that they don’t target kids enough? Sorry, Iwata, but you need good games for core gamers, not for kids, you did kids commercials last Christmas and it didn’t work!

The best selling game of last year was GTA V, which means kids aren’t the biggest market!

  40. But think about it, why can’t there be a console more targeted to kids? Why all 3 consoles have to have COD and mature games? I’m into Nintendo with mature games too FOR THE SAKE OF VARIETY! I DON’T ONLY WANT MARIO AND KIRBY! But the thing is that there’s nothing wrong with kiddy games, kids need games too, didn’t you start with games when you were 9? Now all of the sudden you’re an adult with porn and gore games at 12? Seriously, kids and teenagers need to stop thinking they’re the most mature and adult beings on earth! Have some kid stuff for the kids, have mature stuff for the adults, have variety, period!

  41. Screw the children, what about EVERYONE? They have a wide enough assortment for both core an casual gamers. Target children, but come on. don’t make it just a gigantic priority. Keep the line balanced, enough children games have been released, it should be the opposite. children rarely play games these days because they’re caught up in angry birds and candy crush.

  42. No matter how self-entitled some of you might feel, “kids” (and their parents) are the largest demographic of the market.
But then again, there is more “kids” playing CoD than any Nintendo game.

  43. Just an FYI for anyone who is at least possess an ounce of intelligence: Looks like the translate is wrong: 「子どもたちへのアプローチが十分ではなかった」”Targeting children isn’t enough,” not “We’re not targeting children enough.” – Robert Ward
