PlayStation UK Managing Director Fergal Gara has admitted that the decline of Nintendo could ultimately be detrimental to the video game market. Gara says that Nintendo successfully appeals to the younger consumer group that Sony is trying to go after with titles such as Knack and says there would be a huge gap in the market.
“[The decline of Nintendo] could be detrimental to the market, unless people like us raise our game and help tap into the younger consumer group that they serve rather well. That is the challenge to us. We need to bring maybe more family-friendly, more casual experiences into the market. I think there’s a big market segment there that we should take the challenge to engage and I see lots of potential to do that.”
“The DS family was the bestselling format last year, despite the stellar sales of the PS4 for the last four or five weeks, it was still the best selling console or console family.”
“I think Vita has maybe not a huge position in the marketplace, but a very unique position. Well Sony doesn’t have to be backwards compatible because if u had a previous version of the console u can still play the older games on the older console. The sony platform is supperior and lasts. Both are “casual” in the sense that they are designed to appeal to the masses who don’t really commit themselves to gaming, releases within each franchise are basically rehashes of the original game and don’t take the opportunity to question the traditions on which they are built, and playing them generally requires little thought. Plenty of Nintendo games are casual, such as everything in the NSMB series.

The ‘mature’ image didnt work for Sega because at the time video games were nerdy and were seen as kiddy, so that no teen or adult wanted to have anything to do with games. Unfortunately, nowadays it very different. And that is running the gaming industry into the ground…

Sony caters to everyone, from kids to adults. Out of the big three, they’re the ones who have been putting out the most diverse portfolio over the past few years.
Its undeniable that, especially in recent years, they have been actively targeting the teen/young adult market. Which is just as bad as Nintendos insistence on E-rated games.
Third parties, maybe. But when you look at Sony’s first party portfolio, there are almost an equal amount of games for kids to adults.
Sure, the *gamers* give more attention to the T-M rated games; but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a ton of others that don’t exist. The games are there, but the gaming community chooses to purchase a select few more than others. This in turn shows what the demographic trend is and yes, some marketing will be focused on T-M-rated games a bit more than their other titles. It’s business, money.
Still, there are many E-rated family and kid friendly games on Sony systems, always have been and many of them are great games. Just off of the top of my head in the past couple of years, Sony’s has published games like LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway, Puppeteer, Journey, Gran Turismo, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, wipeout, Little Deviants, Frobisher says, Invizimals, Sound Shapes, Knack, Start The Party, etc. with more to come.
Now how many T-M rated first party Sony games can you name off of the top of your head? I can only really think of Killzone, Uncharted, God of War, inFAMOUS, SOCOM, and The Last of Us right now.
Point is, they’re diverse.
They definetely have a bunch of decent kid friendly games, but the point is, they are actively marketing the playstation brand to teens and adults, just like the entire industry which is being insecure about the fact that they are making kids toys. But you really have to agree that all those franchises you listed really arent Sonys focus. And things like Puppeteer and sly are treated like niche games by gamers and gaming media.

Without Nintendo I am not sure the world of gaming would be the same.
I think I speak for everyone here, but that’s how most of us started gaming.
Tbh only good option i ever found besides Nintendo was Sega because they had awesome and charmin ips like Nintendo, Sony is kinda lame and the only reason why i even have paid attention to them is FF games which are multiplatform nowadays and shitty, Xbox was only there for Halo and Fable and both of them are shit now.
Without Miyamoto, Nintendo would’ve never gained momentum, and that goose stopped laying golden eggs a LONG time ago.
The only drawback I can see in Cheaptendo’s death would be the rise of both hardware and software prices.
I think Nintendo’s huge focus on the younger gamers might be it’s biggest flaw.
It has access to great titles with the likes of Legend of Zelda, the mario franchise, pokemon, etc, but they are ruining themselves by marketing these games for the younger generations and ignoring the wants of the people who grew up playing their franchises.
They just make all of their games too “kiddy” now, and I would really hate to see sony go the same way.
I think sony would do a better job of satisfying their more dedicated gamers than nintendo has though, for sure.
What quite a few people forget is that Sony and Nintendo once were almost complete partners. Sony purchased the company that makes the DRAM for the Wii U to help Nintendo in a time of need. The Wii U is actually a decent console. It’s just the install base isn’t great. Nintendo did a poor job of marketing this console. Period. At first, people thought it was an add on to the Wii. Nintendo needs to start being more third party friendly. Mario has been bashed to the ground with the sequels they keep pumping out and unfortunately…. Mario isn’t what’s going to sell the system anymore. A new Zelda game would maybe move the system. Not the dynasty warriors/link hybrid cral they announced. A new Metroid? That would be a welcome addition. Pikmin even managed to move the console a bit. Get rid of Mario party. So here’s my message to Nintendo. Buy all of your shares back and stop pushing third party devs away. Give people a reason to buy the system instead of pumping out 3 Mario games back to back. I own a Wii U so I know it has potential but after the Zelda remake I’ve stuck to my PS4 until something better comes out.
If Sony here is making total sense about the possible outcome of Nintendo’s gaming market dropout, then those hardcore fanboys, 3rd party and even Nintendo should listen to them closely.
All of this pointless hate talk is exactly why Nintendo’s reputation and hardware/software sales are declining including Nintendo’s shortsighted failure to understand and adapt the changing gaming ecosystem of today and yes, this is coming from a Nintendo fan for over 20 years since NES days. But mostly its how the public and other companies like EA blindly condemning them of their choice of demographic business model and especially how their hardware is manufactured which is suppose to be as economical to the consumer as possible and you can’t go wrong with that.
The only 2 major problems I see with Wii U is the marketing of the system or lack of it and its typical launch window shortage of games in 2013 (That goes for every gaming system launch in history) which evidently is not as worse as 3DS or PS4..yeah most are well acclaimed ports but still better than nothing. That’s it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the hardware itself (doesn’t fail unexpectedly besides freezing and it DOESN’T EXPLODE LIKE XBOX ONE) and its not as dated as every moronic fanboy, 3rd parties like EA wants to believe/lie about and to make this situation sound even more hypocritically messed up, developers/consumers/gamers are still buying last gen consoles/games at this very moment and for another few years so tell me again what is the problem with Wii U’s hardware when PS3/360 are still relevant and developers are still making games for them which the Wii U architecture is proven to be the same shit?

In any case, Sony and Nintendo do pretty much balance each other out in the gaming market. One just won’t stand alone without the other; they have to coexist…So yeah, this worries me, too.
And all that talk about casual gaming on smartphones and stuff? It may actually be a pretty big contributor to the whole issue with the decline; back when I was in first grade, EVERYONE had a DS, even if the only game you owned was, like, Nintendogs, Pokemon, or Animal Crossing. That’s what we played with as younger kids, even if probably less than half of those DS owners grew to be gamers. Now, I just see kids playing with their iPads. Parents probably aren’t willing to buy an individual handheld for their kids to play with when they’re easily entertained by games being sold for under a dollar on a gadget they already own.
It make sense to Sony to have Nintendo successful. Sony knows that PS4 and Wii U can coexist cause their hardware/software are different enough and aim for difference audiences even if they are in competitions in some segments of the video games industry. How many players own a PS3 and a Wii/Wii U or a PS1/2 or a Gamecube? Sony knows it’s possible to sell their products to the same customer who buy a Wii U. The same goes for Nintendo, they knows a successful Sony is way better than Microsoft. I don’t know many people who own a Xbox360 and a PS3 but I know a lot of people who own a PS3 or a xbox360 and a Wii. I think nintendo tries to sell the Wii U knowing lot of people will buy a PS4/Xbox 1 some day in the future and this is why they try to be different.
