This week’s UK charts are now in courtesy of GFK chart-track. But it’s a considerable slip for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as DK and his chums fall 17 places down the individual chart, landing at position 21. We reviewed the platform game last week, giving it a 9 out of 10 and remarked on its master class quality. Back in chart land, it’s an unsurprising victory for Thief, which grabs both the top spot and second place on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Meanwhile in 3DS territory, The LEGO Movie Videogame falls to 26 from 14 last week, and Pokemon X and Y are separated by Rayman Legends at the bottom of the board. Of notable merit in the all-formats chart is Senran Kagura Burst, which managed to sneak in to the top 40 at number 38. You can find the top 40 individual chart in full, below.

One of the best and hardest game I’ve ever played this decade…

Well, I suppose the levels on the final island have that “icy” feel to them, but most of the game is spent getting to that island, so I find the earlier tracks a little more memorable (not that the final tracks aren’t good. They’re great).
You may prefer not to have levels spoiled for you, but I might be wrong, so here’s one of my highlight levels for the game and it’s music (head explodes from orgasm…. the physical/anatomic logic knitting that together being up to your imagination) to wet your palate.

Music sucks. It doesn’t even go with the levels. The revamped version of the old music sucks. The game is much easier. The final boss is mediocre (though better than the Tiki).

Well, to be literal in favor of having hope, not everyone’s missing out, apparently; My mother and little sister were out-and-about on saturday (a little over a week after DKC:TF release), and my sister knew I was planning on buying DKC:TF, so she convinced my mother to surprise me with a copy. The relevant thing here is, they actually went through multiple brick-and-mortar retailers before finding a grand, whopping total of ONE copy, and buying it.
As for the game itself, I’ve just finished the main game (I have too much time on my hands, and I’ve played the shit out of the game. I’m still a minor, so it’s okay for one to live in his parent’s basement yet, right? ;P), and have started on the road to 100% completion. At this point, I’m quite satisfied with the game, but I have this little feeling in the back of my head that Retro’s effort may have fallen a short distance behind their previous work (though only by a few centimeters). Maybe it’s just my nostalgia goggles wanting Tropical Freeze to feel like being mindblown by Returns for the first time all over again, but the merit I see when I look back at Returns is it’s immense creativity. It was so fabulously creative that I remember at-least eighty percent of the levels individually, as opposed to small, individually unimportant chunks of overarching thematic clusters such ass can be seen in New Super Mario Bros. Wii (not that I disliked that game. I’ve actually enjoyed it enough to play through it a few times now.). Not quite so with Tropical Freeze (I’d like to stress that the key word here is “quite”). Whereas I remember about eighty percent of Returns’ levels individually, I can only say the same for about 60% of Tropical Freeze’s levels. I just feel that, while Tropical Freeze had very much of the magic I found in Returns, Returns was more CONSISTENTLY mindblowing. I would still give the both of them five-star ratings; five stars for Tropical Freeze because the game quite deserves such praise, and five stars for Returns because it is unfortunately the highest orthodox rating I can give.
