Platinum Games Creative Producer Reiterates Why Bayonetta 2 Is Exclusive To Wii U

Platinum Games’ creative producer JP Kellams has reiterated why Bayonetta 2 is exclusive to the Wii U. In past months, Kellams has spoken publicly about his concerns for the “pedantic port-begging” from fans of the game, admitting that he’s simply fed up with it. But in a conference at UCF’s Center for Emerging Media last week, Kellams finally put the matter to rest.

The creative producer highlights Nintendo’s approach to the game, saying that the publisher was the “white knight” of development. He also remarks that Bayonetta 2 only exists because Platinum really wanted to create the game. The presentation, though a little lengthy, can be watched in its entirety above. However, a few snippets of Kellams speech can be found below.

“Without getting into some stuff that is both business and confidential, the simple question I’d like to ask you is, ‘Do you want to play Bayonetta 2?’ Bayonetta 2 would not exist without Nintendo white knighting that project. So while I totally understand that people want to play it on the platforms that they’ve played it on previously, we really wanted to make Bayonetta 2.

“I spend a lot of time on Twitter seeing people get really angry, ‘Why is it not on PS3 and 360?’ Right? So kind of the way it went was, ‘Why do we have to buy a Wii U for one game? Why isn’t it on PS3 or 360?’ And now that the Xbox One and the PS4 are out, it’s ‘Why isn’t it on PS4 or Xbox One?’ So then it’s not about buying a piece of hardware, it’s just that you didn’t want it on the Wii U.

“And that’s cool, I mean maybe that system’s not for you, or maybe that platform isn’t what you want to play games on, but we really want to make Bayonetta 2 and we think it’s going to be a fun game and the people who do play it are going to really enjoy it, and I think that we made the right decision to make sure that game survived. I mean I’d rather be in a world with Bayonetta 2 than without.”

  1. Good on him. Besides, exclusives are exclusives. We miss out on tons of games all the times, even ones we should be getting, but simply don’t (GTA V HINT HINT) so why is it the ‘worst thing ever’ when they miss out but when we do “it’s not a problem”, honestly, platinum games is really cool for saying this and I admire what they are saying.

    1. People complaining about the relatively few exclusives that are around now must not have been around a few generations ago. Even on the PS2, GameCube and Xbox, there were so many exclusive games that you pretty much had a really unique experience, no matter what system you went with. I really loved that, to be honest.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

        True…

When the first Xbox came out I didn’t like it much but I didn’t hate it like the Xbox 360 or despise it like the Xbox Done…

And all 3 powers had the definition of original titles back then…

              1. Well, you can buy a Wii U, hook it to your XBO and and pretend you are playing Bayonetta 2 in the XBO.

          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

            Buy a Wii U?…

And too bad the Xbots or the Sonyans had zero interest in the IP to even bother funding…

  2. “it’s not about buying a piece of hardware, it’s just that you didn’t want it on the Wii U.”

That pretty much sums it up about how they feel..Nintendo just can’t have such a great exclusive like bayonetta 2 to themselves..

      1. what Nintendo Commander Quadraxis is saying is if wii u and 3ds wont have games like tales of series then bayonetta 2 is what we can have.since the other devs care more about x-bone and ps4.

  3. No matter how hard they try, they won’t make people understand that Nintendo funded it and that, as always, what is exclusive on a Nintendo system stays exclusive on a Nintendo system.

    1. The Capcom 5 would like a word with you.

That said, it’s funded and published by Nintendo, so you are right about Bayonetta staying exclusive.

        1. Mikami said that he’d chop his head off before porting RE4. Since Capcom had to port the game without him or his team I’d say that his head is safe… If he wasn’t working with Bethesda now…

      1. Right? They can afford a PS4 AND an xBone, but don’t want their friends to laugh at them for owning a WiiU. Poor, poor them!! #1stWorldProblems ;)

  4. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

It’s because our empire funded the game and revived it from the deletion particles of doom…

    Deal with it…

  5. Maybe cry baby little ass bitch could just make mommy and daddy kick out $300 for the U. That’s ONLY two Starbucks Venti Carmel Frappuccino each day for a month. That’s nothing to lose for a snotty kid they buy their love from.
    Also…. EAT A DICK!

    1. Yes! Where are Pinwheel, Aeolus, newcomer Sasori, and, obviously, Iceazeama? There’s got to be SOMETHING directly relevant they’d like to say!

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

The Xbots usually lasts a few days, then they are destroyed…

So basically they have a shorter energy level, just like their Xboxes…

  6. HAhahaha lmao you want the game for PS3 or 360? Too bad.
Sorry if I don’t reply, I’ll be in my bedroom playing Bayo 2 while you’re here raging.

  7. Proof that Wii U owners are a punching bag, yet more mature for it.

I didn’t cry when the director of Dark Souls 2 literally LAUGHED at the suggestion of releasing Wii U version and telling me and my 20 years gaming experienceand love of Dark Souls 1 that I’M NOT the audience for the game.

And yet… owners of other systems turn into the crazy, unrequited stalker and ct like if they can’t have Bayo 2 (on their system), nobody can!

Can’t we just go back to blowing dust out of carts plz??

    1. You may not want want it, but tons of other do. People who own a Wii U want it and people who don’t want to get a Wii U want it released for other systems. But since Nintendo is publishing this game, they won’t do that, and that’s why people are causing a big deal over it.

  8. It’s good that they’re being loyal after the help Nintendo gave them! And I love the point about it’s not that people don’t want to buy a new console, cause they’re always asking for it PS4 and XBOX ONE.

  9. Nintendo should do more of this, like Vanquish 2 and Madworld 2 (but make Madworld 2 either in color or black and white film which means there are lots of shades of gray, that comic book black and white was not good). Or have Platinum Games make 3rd person Metroid, or Star Fox like the Metal Gear Revengence.

  11. I’m of the other kind of pedantic port begging, I’m from the kind that want Bayonetta 1 ported to the Wii U.

  12. Nintendo needs Platinum Games to make a new Star Fox and Metroid games, and Vanquish 2 and Madworld 2.

  13. When I saw this picture I got my hopes up that a release date was announced. Probably won’t hear about a release date until E3 unfortunately…..

  14. Yeah I never played first one so a port would be nice. Did I hear correctly that the movie tells the plotline of the first game? So I could watch that then play this?

  15. why dont people just shut up about the port begging and just get a wii u for the game, sure namco-bandai (bandai-namco or whatever they are called as i confuse which is the right saying) is giving the big middle finger about not bringing the tales of series to nintendo consoles, yet they are co-developing with hal laboratory on smash bros, yes it sucks but oh well.

  16. If not for Nintendo (& in large part this “contraversy”), I’d likely never have heard about the Bayonetta IP.

Now that I have, it seems like the IP is a perfect fit for the Nintendo I know, @ least in terms of its gameplay & style. Bayonetta kinda reminds me of Sin & Punishment & Star Successor. Also, Platinum reminds me of Treasure: revered, independent 3rd party, Japanese cool w/ a focus on gameplay that’s tight & reminescent of the arcade.
