It seems simple enough, but it isn’t. I actually introduced the idea when it was time to localize Lucent Heart for the U.S. and our team asked for it, and Japan was kind of surprised at the request, asking if that was something that enough people wanted. We convinced them it was, and they said it was a lot of stuff they’d have to re-program to allow the software to recognize certain events and all that. It was a 2-3 month delay we had to decide if it was worth it, and in the end we said yes and they added it in for the U.S.
Just like with any new feature, it can introduce new bugs and QA has to test out all the new possibilities and all that, which can add another month or so. So at first the Japanese team was just like we’ll keep it in mind for the next game, but we convinced them to add it which pleased a lot of people here. In Japan, the issue isn’t a big deal as it is here, so it wasn’t them being backwards per se, it was just something that didn’t come to mind. The same thing about different races, you really only found light complexions, which happens a lot in Japanese games. Race is looked at from a whole different perspective in Japan. I know a white guy from South Africa that was living in Japan for a few years and his coworkers insisted he was black because he was from Africa. He couldn’t make them understand that white people can be from Africa, too. It’s really just a very different cultural perspective.
That’s why I can understand them saying it wasn’t in the original, so it’s not in the localized versions. Sure it’d be nice, but it’s more work than people realize. Hopefully they’ll keep it mind when designing the next game in the series or any similar game so it’s there from the start, making it all a lot easier. Look at real life, it should be easy to implement, but there are a ton of little technical things to sort out legally and all that before allowing it. Of course that shouldn’t stop it from happening, but in this case at least it’s just a game and not a tremendous deal if it doesn’t happen. So long as it’s just “oh we didn’t think of it” rather than “ew, gross, we don’t believe in that” then people shouldn’t get offended.

And advertising the game has same sex relationships as a feature could also be considered offensive, since it nowadays should be taken as natural, ppl could think it is a way to show gay ppl as some kind of freaks… there’s a lot to take into consideration when releasing something related to genre, race and culture, so it was a wise choice not to implement it until it has been throughly thought.

When this game released in Japan some players were posting images of male miis forming a relationship. The miis would even get pregnant. Nintendo released a patch and removed the homosexuality from the game calling it a “glitch”. This was the rumor. Now Nintendo is saying that people are misinformed and that the patch was never for that, that it was a patch to fix some glitches with the game but that it was never even possible for male miis to for a relationship. The original screenshots people were posting were just female miis dressed in mens clothing and with male haircuts. I don’t know which story is true.
