IDC Says Smash Bros Won’t Save Wii U, But Will Boost Sales

Lewis Ward, a video games analyst at research firm International Data Corporation, has told the BBC that he expects Super Smash Bros Wii U will give the Wii U a much-needed sales boost, but won’t turn around the company’s fortunes. The Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros launches this summer, while the Wii U version is expected to come this winter.

“Super Smash Bros won’t turn around Nintendo’s fortunes, but it will get the Wii U up off the mat and encourage people who enjoyed previous versions of the game to buy the console,”

    1. At first when I read the title, I didn’t know what it meant. It just made sense along the way. Smash Bros.’s rating (if anyone cares about it) has been rated Teen+. This is itself only brings back audiences that have been with the Smash Community, but not so much can bring in kids. Of course the parents are the ones buying the games for the kids and so we’ll see how it goes. I’m beginning to sound redundant. Goodnight.

      1. If you look at the sales of Call of Duty, many parents don’t care about the game rating system for some strange reason, with many copys of this rated M game ending up in 10-16 year old’s hands. Super Smash Bros meanwhile is a beloved family favourite. I doubt the Teen rating will have a huge effect on sales

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Maybe these parents support the idea of getting kids hooked on guns as early as possible & Call of Duty is a perfect way to get kids into them when you think about the fun factor of the series for kids that like non-stop action games.

      2. pink0crystal0midbus

lol, but Smash Bros has been rated Teen since Melee and it has always sold well among kids…. So I don’t get this point.

      3. You do realize that it’s more children playing GTAV than compared to the rating age that’s suppose to be playing it? All the sales it got was from a lot of parents carelessly buying it for their kids.

Funny considering logic says if the game boosts sales, it in fact does help save the Wii U. But like I said before, if Mario Kart 8 does it’s job well, SSB 4 Wii U won’t be able to save it since it will already be saved.

Aslong as I play the game, I don’t care about any non Nintendo prediction…

    1. agreed … people wonder when it’s going to ‘start’ … it’s already over 1.5 years old already … and this isn’t a 5-6 year console … this is a 3-4 year console … it’s half-through it’s life cycle.

      1. Hate to burst your bubble, brat, but Nintendo themselves have already confirmed it will be supported until 2017, at the very least.

  2. I really think they should have released the Wii U version first in my opinion. I know Mario Kart 8 is just released but the Wii U needs more help as the 3DS has been out longer and people may not buy the Wii U version if they get the 3DS version perhaps. We will just have to see! :)

    1. I’m buying both, if the Wii U version had released first, or both at the same time, I would have only bought the Wii U version, and lots of people would have done the same. This way they double their sales.

      1. Yes, it does double sales but I think it would have made more sense from a business pov to release the Wii U version this Summer and the 3DS version this Christmas! Yes, you would have bought the Wii U version only but sure we’ll see how sales are haha

    2. The order of release is perfect. The 3DS sales have slowed down and you don’t release a non polished game. There will be great games filling out the months till smash and this allows Nintendo to get advertising together. Also Just like MK8 is well polished and complete they have to make sure the Wii U version is perfect.

    1. New IPs will def. help the system this year and next year. I think we are going to have a fantastic 2 years of Wii U IPs. I can see a new AC game come out this November/December for example :)

    1. Awesome. Everyone is predicting starfox but I don’t wanna get my hopes up because that might not happen. Personally, I’m expecting a new Metroid game, a 3DS Metroid game or who knows, retro’s new game might be a new metroid prime(or at least a spin-off from that series) or theirs rumor that Retro’s game is the starfox game everyone is predicting and afterall, they made SF Assault.. Zelda U is pretty much guaranteed to show. I dunno if it’s just me but I’m predicting an HD re-release of Mario Sunshine and that would be “the mario game” they announce every year. GC virutual console is a possibility especially considering they announced the gamecube controller adapter for Wii U(It was advertised for Smash Bros) But overall solid predictions!

      1. My friend and I are debating over whether or not Star Fox will be announced. He is a HUGE Star Fox fan but he does not see it happening this year. Honestly, there isn’t a whole lot of evidence to support the theory of a Star Fox game being made outside of fan hype. I’m really hoping for a new Metroid game as well! Wouldn’t be cool instead of doing an HD remake of Sunshine, they release on virtual console and make a Super Mario Sunshine 2?

        1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

The probaility of a Starfox games is way higher than a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine 2…

I’m sure the next 3D Mario is going to be something completely new…

  3. They’re right you know. Nintendo pulling off the worst mistake ever by having the 3DS Version (Even though it’ll be great on the 3DS). No one will buy it for the Wii U knowing it’ll be on the 3DS and that it’ll launch sooner.

    1. I don’t know about that. Sure, they will have it sooner on 3DS, but Smash Bros is traditionally a game for the big screen. I think there will still be demand for the Wii U version. Maybe a little bit less because of the 3DS version, but I don’t think the 3DS version existing will kill the Wii U version. I know I am getting both.

      1. I’m getting both versions, but I’m more excited for the Wii U one, and I know some other people who feel the same way. I still think releasing 3DS first might lower the Wii U sales somewhat, but I don’t expect this decision to hurt the console too much.

    2. It’s a smart move. The Wii U version of Smash is considered “the full version of the game” so while people will be playing the 3DS version of Smash it’ll give them sort of a preview of whats to come, it’s to get them hyped for the HD counterpart.

  4. well if it was WiiU exclusive, it would make more fanboys buy a WiiU. but since its on 3ds.. however it was smart decision of nintendo to do it. they have in mind that wiiu can be fail. so they release it also on 3ds, because 3ds is far from a fail.

    1. You do know that the Wii U will have features the 3DS version doesn’t. So it will make Smash fans who buy the 3DS version just want to get the Wii U version for the HD graphics and the other features they couldn’t get on the 3DS.

      1. “You do know that the Wii U will have features the 3DS version doesn’t”

And vice versa. Neither version is the “full version” because they both have different content.

  5. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

If Mario Kart 8 leads to the saving of the Wii U, of course Super Smash Bros for Wii U won’t save it since it’ll already be saved. And it’s still too soon to tell if Mario Kart 8 has or hasn’t led to the Wii U’s salvation. These analysts & the people that think the Wii U is beyond saving are completely ignoring the possibility the Wii U could make a huge turn around just like the 3DS. And yeah yeah. I know the 3DS had a price cut but it also had a good stream of games afterwards. For the Wii U, we won’t know if it’ll have a healthy stream of games til E3. Anyway, it’s not dead UNTIL it’s dead. And it won’t be dead til Nintendo gives up on it and announces a new console to replace it.

  6. Boost in sales also means saving…. Wii U will have twice the units the Xbox One has (which is still in the 4 million range)

  7. I don’t care about this anymore, if they release good games that I can enjoy it’s fine by me. I just hope that, at the end of this generation, Nintendo gained some sort of profit of it… that’s all…

  8. well even released on the GC it didn’t save it, but the gamecube was still amazing console, the wii u just needs to be amazing, Nintendo gave us the best library, on 64, and GC when they struggle. This kinda says it for me

  9. SherlockWillFightBilbo

A few weeks after the 3DS version is released, we’re going to get a special Wii U Smash Direct that details why we should get hyped for the Wii U version and buy it.

Nintendo’s never made the “same” game for both console and handheld before this. They’re not going into this blind. The Wii U version will stand out, but they’ll make it stand out after getting your money for the 3DS version.

  10. Well, Nintendo will have to carry the Wii U alone, with his typical partnership here and there to help, and I think they will make a profit out of it, but if they using the term “save” as to = it will bring back all the 3rd party support and win this console war, well, that is a definitely “no no”.
Better luck next time with the Ninteno Fusion.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I’ll be perfectly happy with that, to be honest. If the Wii U is just another Gamecube, I will gladly say the Wii U was a success since the GCN had tons of great games.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

And then thee imbeciles will play all of these games that they bashed for so long and then claim they were the best games of the 8th generation…

And then on 9-10th generation they will be the new Nintendo haters that thinks our empire don’t make anything when they didn’t play the games before to begin with…

  11. pink0crystal0midbus

What are they talking about? Mario Kart 8 is selling Wii U’s right now and the Wii U is starting to pick up. The WIi U has already been “saved.”

  12. Considering that the 3DS version will be released first, I can’t help but think he’s right. If the person already owns it on 3DS, then they mostly likely won’t bother to buy a Wii U to play the game again.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

Two words. GameCube Controller. The Wii U can use GameCube controllers which makes it the automatic definitive version.

Either people will not buy the 3DS one and will wait for the Wii U one OR, the more likely event, people will buy both and love the WIi U one more.

    2. @ggregz, the 3ds version is on the go, you cant take the wii u version anywhere so that is why there is 2 versions, one on the go and one at home, i will be getting both but i will have to wait untill the wii u version is out as i will get then on, near my b-day or as an x-mas present

  13. Ignoring that if Wii U gets a continually dose of strong tittles every 2 months dor the next 7 years and advertise them that will boost sales. But journalist rather play dumb as if one tittle can save a console.

  14. “save” is such a subjective term. I’d love to know what the definition of saving the Wii U is.

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

society’s definition of “saving the Wii U” is expecting it to sell billions of units, as it doesn’t, people believe it to be failing by conclusion

That is why society is better off destroyed

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

They are nothing more than cattle that their only purpose seems to be to spread their infected abominations everywhere…

    2. pink0crystal0midbus

That’s what I’m saying. In my eyes, Mario Kart 8 has already “saved” the Wii U, because it has given the Wii U it’s first real “must have” game.

With E3 on Tuesday and Smash Bros releasing at the end of the year (plus who knows what else.. Zelda U?) The Wii U is going to be fine. If it doesn’t die, then it has been saved.

  15. The Wii U has sold its initial inventory and Nintendo recouped their production cost, those already mean the Wii U is saved.

But when it is compared to the PS4, then yes it probably is going to take longer to reach those sales numbers.

Analysts are just that, analysts, their word is not set in stone. A lot can happen in the next few years of the Wii U, and it’s not over yet.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

The PS4 isn’t even that far ahead. The PS4 itself has a lot of work to do. For all we know, the PS4 could start dwindling in sales in a couple of months.

  16. Well at least on the upside, the trolls have seemed to have left this site, we only need to seal that annoying sasori in with his trolling buddies we have defeated and things will be A O K

  17. Why so little faith in the games this days? Games ARE what saves consoles, they are the reasons why we buy them in the first place. Then, Why are people buying video game consoles for? I honestly don’t care if the Wii U fails anymore, as long as Nintendo releases all the games that they have promise so far, ill enjoy my console of choise no matter if other people consider it a failure and makes them angry. :D

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

That’s why want the Xbots out of this universe and the Sonyans to lose a big portion of their power so that all these damn multimedia gimmicks that are in consoles are gone…

That’s what is destroyng the gaming universe…

    2. That’s not true. Games don’t save consoles. Then why is PS4 selling so well? Games save Nintendo consoles shows.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

PS4 and Xbot machines sell well because of media gimmicks that has nothing to do with gaming…

  18. Pingback: NintendoRAW » Blog Archive IDC says Smash Bros. won’t save Wii U, but it’ll bring renewed interest | NintendoRAW

  19. I might be the only one that thinks this but I want a star fox adventures / star fox 64 crossover. The best of both worlds. Visiting planets and having plenty of on-rail shooting as well as open world stages and really showing the star fox universe. Although this is probly way too much forward thinking to be possible probly

  20. I honestly wish they would have made different characters for both games idk why they wouldn’t do that it would make ppl buy both games like exclusive 3ds only characters and wii u only characters .

  21. It does not need saving. The system is going to run its cycle and people will buy games for it and so on until next gen. Its not going to outsale anything it will do better and better and it will be ok. So there is no point in this kind of article anymore.

  22. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to make this prediction. How CAN the Wii U bounce back after losing so much third party support? However, it’s still a great console with a lot of potential left in it. And as long as great games continue to release on Wii U, most of those third party games that are skipping the Wii U won’t make any difference to me.

  23. There’s only one solution: RELEASE THE WII U VERSION FIRST INSTEAD OF THE 3DS VERSION.

Nintendo is making a huge mistake with their current release plans.

  24. I can agree. It’ll boost sales, yea, but Nintendo can’t release games at a high rate anymore, and they barely have any support to fill in the gaps.

It’s Nintendo’s fault for not involving other devs in the development of the console and rushing it out before anyone could get a handle on it.
It’s third party’s fault for being unwilling to make unique games for it.
It’s the fanboys’ fault for perpetuating the stereotype that they only buy Nintendo products for Nintendo games

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Our empire consulted all these Third Class empires on what they wanted to see from our empire…

The Wii U was a result of that…

Then they started to make gimped versions and outdated games for no reason at all and then everybody blames our people for not buying their garbage…

      1. Outdated? Most of the ports came out earlier in the same month the Wii U came out. And again Nintendo gave them the dev kits way too late in the development cycles for them to get a handle on it in time for launch. You need to get it through your thick skull that not every developer is EA.

  25. “It will encourage people who liked previous versions to buy the console” Isn’t that ‘saving’?

  26. to be honest now MK8 is out and looking at the Wii U library Brawl will contribute to sell more hardware. And I would like to know what’s the definition of save.

It they managed to sell 10M unit or more at the end of the fiscal year 2014 then I do believe they will be OK.

By all account MS sold 11.6M and Sony 18M worldwide (take these number with a pinch of salt) if they don’t get more games they won’t sell much more.

Even if at the end of the fiscal year 2014 Nintendo sold 10M (i bet it would be around 15M) they are OK. In Europe the sale of the Wii U start to rise up to 50% and the sale of Japan increasing as well. I would be really surprise if Nintendo don’t sale more than 10M Wii U.

  27. No one game is going to save a whole console but it will give it a boost.

This is very simple, with each “big” game Wii U will enjoy a boost in sales, even stuff like WW HD wich is a remake of the lowest selling Zelda game ever increased Wii U sales for a little while.

Give us SSB, Metroid, Zelda, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Star Fox, another Mario etc and with each game you will selll more consoles.
