Aonuma Promises To Stop Overdoing Tutorials In The Zelda Series

Reviews were mainly positive for The Legend of Zelda : Skyward Sword, but the game did come under some criticism regarding the amount of handholding and tutorials encountered at the start of the game. The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma acknowledges the problem and promises to stop overdoing tutorials in future Zelda titles, including Zelda Wii U.

Schreier: So in Skyward Sword, a few years ago, I think that a lot of people loved that game—I enjoyed that game quite a bit—but one of the biggest criticisms or complaints was that it took a very long time to actually jump into the gameplay because there were a lot of tutorials and a lot of introduction and cut-scenes in the beginning. Then Link Between Worlds came along and you just jumped in right away. So I wonder, when planning for future games, are you going to go more towards that Link Between Worlds approach or Skyward Sword, or something in between? How do you feel about intros and tutorials these days?

Aonuma: Yes. When we created Skyward Sword, I really felt the need to make sure that everyone playing the game understood it. But I also understand now, in hindsight, that when you go out and buy a game, you buy the game because you want to play it, and you don’t want to have any obstacles in the way. And I guess it was received as a bit of an obstacle. In a game, it’s when you get stuck, when you want that help. And I kinda frontloaded all that in Skyward Sword, and it doesn’t really help to get that information when you don’t know what to do with it. So that was a real learning experience for me. So I’m going to be careful not to do that.

  1. Thank goodness, i liked Skyward Sword but those tutorials were overdoing it badly imo. Lets hope this new Zelda tops WW as best Zelda yet!

    1. Great gaming armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of Nintendo, consoles shall be built to carry our warriors out into the world and we will spread our message to all the unbelievers. The power of Nintendo will be felt far and wide and the wicked shall be vanquished.

Oh, you mean that horrible game for a console that is owned by a company who is dying? No thanks, I’ll choose Zelda, plus, why bother with the PSbore when most of the superior Third Party games are on PC.

    3. Valve Admiral GLaDOS

Yet all the previous ones couldn’t. So…
Your argument lacks a believable foundation, therefore making your argument invalid as well.

        1. Valve Admiral GLaDOS

Telling me to “shut fuck up” means I struck a nerve and calling me “hoe” at the end of it makes you sound butthurt. Anger like that is bad for your health sir, I suggest you do some breathing exercise, its very helpful.

    4. Secret Master Ruler of All

What foolishness is this? You ought to be banned from the internet for saying such stupidity.

    5. @Sony Emperor Xperia, if nintendo b\never broke their contract with sony, playstation would have not existed, maybe nintendo playstation but not the playstation we all know.

  2. I like opening scenes and setting up. What I don’t like is long text about a simple action, or a companion chiming in every other minute with obvious/redundant information. :/ Still, I tolerate it because it’s Zelda haha I mean, do people really want scenes like Groose’s introduction and Zelda’s spunkiness taken away???

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

I don’t believe you understand, it is more like, tutorials on how to run, pick up things, ride your horse etc

      1. I understand fine. The question in the article mentioned a lot of cut-scenes. I was referring to them, as well as Fi’s impulse to reiterate item instructions after a new item is acquired.

        1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Yeah, I hated that too. You get the item, it tells you how to use it, and the area you’re in has an immediate use for the item, but then Fi has to tell you AGAIN how to use it.

  3. Nintendo is my Blood

Wasn’t that big of an issue for me, but it was kinda pointless, you don’t play a Zelda game without picking up the controls instantly

  4. Yes! Twilight Princess is a huge offender of this, if he wants to do tutorials, fine. But offer an option so people who have played it can skip all tutorials

  5. better make a nice game instructions book instead all these tutorials. Then people can decide on their own if they need help or not.
I miss the good old times with nice looking instruction books in COLOR.Today its almost only ads in there and 2-3 pages of GREY instruction “book” with the controls in it…..

  6. Fi was SO annoying! She explained like everything, even after getting a new item she literally repeated what the item description said right away…

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

      At least she was informative
plus she called us “Master” I like that, makes me feel respected

She was better than Tatl, who called us morons if we needed help

      1. Lol that’s what made tatl so awesome, Navi was OK, annoying but tolerable. Fi was annoying and boring as shit. Oslo (or what ever the hat was) was pretty cool. Midna has to be the best though.

        Am I missing anyone else?
Also Does the King of Red Lions count?

        1. Nooo, Navi was the most annoying specially with that “HEY, listen”. Fi was tolerable, midna was badass and the best of all of them…sorry king of red lions, but midna wins that fight over you since you too was annoying.

      2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

It makes sense. Link was the master of the Goddess Sword so he was her master by extension. It also gives an in-game reason for the name Master Sword.

  7. A Link Between Worlds kind of already started to step away from tutorials. Instead of explanations everywhere, early areas were designed to help you learn about the mechanics on your own, and each item had a brief explanation of how it’s used when you get it. I think that’s a good way to go about “tutorials.”

    1. yeah but the one annoying thing was it made getting items too easy…course you have to rebuy them if you lose a life but its still too easy to get them regardless…that I didn’t like. THAT…has to change.

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I have to agree. I was able to get all of the items from Ravio before even going to hardly any of the dungeons once you could get every single item from him & permanently buy them. It ended up making the rest of the game easy.

  8. A good designer can teach you everything about his game without using a single word, just play the game to learn all the rules is the way to go… trough hidden tutorial during gameplay, like the NES era.

  9. Good news

However if felt that TP was way worse.

There you had to catch 2 fishes,, herd the goat 2 times, borrow the horse, use the eagle 2 times and you had to go through both a sword and a slingshot tutorial

    1. I just realized that was probably cause it was one of the first big motion control games. I played it on the GameCube, the GCN didn’t need to also have those :( well whatever, I wanna play Twilight Princess again, that’s my favorite and I haven’t played it in like 2 years, I need more helm splitters in my life

  10. Tutorials are good for the new people but they shouldn’t be overdone either. I’m the kind of gaymer who just likes to play right away. Hugs.

  11. Real PC Master Race

Fuck yeah, I’m glad tutorials are going out the window.
Megaman never had tutorials so why should an awesome game series like this.

Overdone!? Around 25 games in 30 years is not overdoing it. If you want to look at something being overdone, look no further than Call of Duty.

  13. Stop complaining. At least we’re getting a zelda wiiu! Right. They can include any amount of tutorials any they want. That’s my opinion. Maybe they could fix it to where you could bypass tutorials.

  14. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

A tutorial system like what Xenoblade Chronicles or The Last Story had would be a great idea. If you don’t want to use it, just quickly skim through the pages & move on.
