Mario Kart 8 Up For Five Golden Joystick Awards In This Year’s Nominee Listings

The nominees have been announced for this year’s Golden Joystick Awards – and Nintendo’s flagship racing title Mario Kart 8 is up for five of them. Hosted by Computer and Video Games (CVG), the Golden Joystick Awards are polled and voted by the consumer, rather than gaming critics and experts, and this year there are many Nintendo games up for awards, including the aforementioned Mario Kart 8 with the Luigi Death Stare nominated for “Best Gaming Moment”, along with Super Smash Bros, Splatoon, and Super Mario 3D World.

Below you’ll find a list of all the Nintendo-related nominees. If you’d like to vote, you can do so on the Golden Joystick Awards homepage, here. Voting closes on October 20, 2014, with the awards winners revealed on the live show in late October.

    1. This LAGtastrophy of a game! No possible way! My magnificence has had it!
These useless casuals have ruined proper gaming. No more challenges, skill no longer factored in, ok’d primitive online service. This game deserves NO awards….no awards praising it, at least. If it were up for most laggy game I’d understand, or most unbalanced game, I’d understand, or, and I really believe I was SPECIFICALLY hand-picked for this one: most biased towards a single player award.

I do NOT understand how the majority of FOLLOWERS are typing “it’s so fun” since my purchase, fun has yet to be FOUND. A man of prestige like myself takes pride in competition, I sit at 73XX VR, but it’s been hell trying to get there! This biased towards REAL racers, glitchy game is out to get me! What I have endured, NOBODY else has!

And for those who still race; I’ve found a way to “get back” at the game when it screws me over…since the ways it can screw one over are too many to describe, just know I’ve been screwed over 90% of my time online!
Back to what I was saying: the way to get back at the game, after the round ends, and you take your position (5-9, because the game gave you the finger) and when it comes time to choose the next course, wait till the countdown is at 1 till you choose! Haha If the game screws me over, ALL racers shall suffer…ah, how I love those “shall we get started” messages….haha, knowing on the other side people are fuming when my Mii raises its arm right at the 1 mark….hahaha
Game messes with my perfection, then ALL involved suffer in the next course selection.

      X 1 MILLION
Stoopid poeple to mhuch stoopid poeple. Toodles!

      1. What game are you playing? I haven’t experienced any lag while playing Mario Kart 8. Don’t talk shit and get better internet!

        1. There is lag with weapon hits that don’t register, I’ll give him that as much as I can’t stand him lol. I’ll hit people and they even show the animation yet they lose no speed even with heavier users who don’t have great acceleration. Or getting hit by nothing. My racer doesn’t actually like though. And I’m usually in the top four or five. It’s funny how he says this game takes no skill and is for casuals. I’d say it takes MORE skill than other Mario Karts cause items are not as helpful and if you’re relying on weapons to save you, you aren’t that good, not to sound offensive. I will say getting coins often in first sucks cause you can’t defend yourself. But anyway I love the game though it certainly needs issues like item balance fixed. Star shouldn’t be nerfed, lasts way too short for example. It’s the damn invincibility star, it’s SUPPOSED to be feared. And lightning shouldn’t take away items. And bring back the boo item damn it lol. Also one other thing is first place should get shrooms more often. It’s shitty when you’re ahead the whole race on like piranha plant slide or sweet sweet canyon for instance and someone comes and takes the huge shortcut at the end of those tracks that first place is practically cut off from, and beats you at the end, and you literally can’t do anything about that.

          1. I agree, you don’t have to be lagging yourself to see others that are. It is kind of absurd to assume everyone who plays Mario Kart 8 has that great of a connection anyway.

I have no trouble with my Wii U when it comes to downloading or internet speed, I have 45Mbps fiber optics and my Wii U sits maybe 6 feet away from my modem. They must not play the game that much or aren’t that observant when they are if they haven’t ran into a couple players who lag like shit.

Also Mario Kart has always been more dependent on items than skill, no matter how good you are, if you get a series of bad items coming towards you.. There isn’t anything you can do about it even if you have a super horn or are the best player in the world, it won’t matter.

            1. Yea lag happens often enough it’s annoying to lose cause you nail an awesome shot that doesn’t slow down your opponent. And yea other mario kars involved a lot of the weaponry, I just feel this one the weapons only take you so far. What’s your NNID if you’d be interested in racing sometime?

      2. Dude, do I really need to say how silly you sound? “my magnificence”? “no skills factored in” nor “challenges”, but you don’t go better than “5-9”? Typing all that blather makes you sound foolish man, it’s embarassing. Please, understand that I’m not angry at you or anything, but when I read all these things that you spend all your energy on (and you do seem to enjoy doing it around quite often), I can’t avoid to think how miserable you must be: it’s so horrible. You don’t offend people dude, you don’t make them angry, you don’t piss them off, you make them fell pity for you dude. You act like a brainless birzarre thing, it’s horrible. I fell sad for you man, really, I do. Please, make the community of this website (and yourself) a favor: stop writting all these miserable things. You are not annoying anybody, you’re embarassing yourself.

      3. Get better internet then, idiot. I’ve NEVER experienced lag or disconnections, and making other people wait for your slow ass to choose a track cause your internet sucks is just trifling. Items aren’t as helpful and you can’t hold 2 anymore, so MORE skill is required.

I swear, now it’s just COOL to hate Nintendo.
        I don’t get it.

    1. Dude, the 3DS already has so many great games and only a few more will take advantage of the new CPU. Either suck it up and upgrade or don’t. They’re not forcing shit on you unlike Xbox One with Kinect.

      1. Yeah, but the thing is Stranga, Nintendo Japan announced they will be making more “New” 3ds exclusives in the future. It’s not just one game that ~50 million users will miss out on, but many more in the future.
I still have a good handful of 3DS games to buy/ play (like 999, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Shoveknight), but if Nintendo/ other 3rd party devs only start making games for the New 3DS, then it will practically be a new Nintendo system.

I made an analogy the other day that really relates to the 3DS. What if you needed to buy a new dvd player every 2 or 3 years, in order to watch current dvds? Sure, there are hundreds of thousands of old movies you can watch with the old dvd player, but seeing that it can’t play new movies- you’re shit out of luck when you want to watch The Lego Movie or Guardians of the Galaxy or other new releases.

My dvd player is probably 9 or 10 years old, and it works fine. So I kind of feel that Nintendo is cheating the people who already own 3DS systems.

        1. And there’s only one announced..a Wii version of the same game you can freely buy and enjoy right now..that’s coming out next enough time and chance that the game could be updated to be playable on older 3DS.

          1. Yeah- but do you at least grt what I am saying? It was confirmed that Xenoblade wasn’t going to be the only New 3DS game to be released. For all I know- a year from now- only New 3DS games will be released.

As for it being a port- I really don’t want to pay ~85 dollars for the game, shipping, and tax. It’s a rare game, and doesn’t sell for cheap. But, yeah, by the time Xenoblade is ported to the 3DS, the Wii U version will be available- so I suppose I will have to pass on the original Wii/ ported New 3DS version.

            1. I actually saw Xenoblade in GameStop right now for $50 I think. Because of the overpricing debacle, they dropped it. And by the time the new port comes, Wii version will be a lot cheaper by then.

And Nintendo said more games are being planned, not made or revealed yet. Only one currently that is Xenoblade. I get ya want it on the go and for all systems and why you seem pissed but Jesus, chill out and make your voices be heard. Tell them to make the game compatible with all models and have a nice day.

              1. I’m sure the new 3DS will have a decent number of games. People will be pissed about needing a new handheld for certain games, but people who actually upgrade would be even more pissed to buy a system for one or two games.

                1. That’s why they should consider themselves cautious over new hardware. This is the same thing for phones, computers and even cars. Technology updates itself all the time. They have to accept that or just stick to the old for a while longer until they’re ready to upgrade. I would consider the new 3DS but not until I test drive it first.

                      1. I like it but I feel the extra buttons and circle pad should have already been on the original as well as the extra battery life. I won’t have a decision made on if I’m getting it for a while, but I have time seeing as it won’t be out here in the u.s. till next year at least.

                        1. Doubled CPU, HTML5 support, Bluetooth support, customization options, an added C-Stick and ZL and ZR buttons, increased 3D accuracy and many more aren’t “wow” enough for you?

                          1. Wow you’re just gonna drop the same amount for a new system that you spent on the original version because half it’s new features are things that should have been in the original? Wow.

                          2. I’ve owned the 3DS ever since it’s first month, so I don’t mind paying for the upgraded 3DS. In fact, the New 3DS will make the 3D effect even more enjoyable as I won’t have to hold it in a specific way. I’ll probably never turn the effect off now! xD Besides, I can just give the Link Between Worlds 3DS XL to the wife, so she can give my old 3DS XL to one of my brothers. It’s a win/win for me.

            1. August 27 release of MK8 DLC and release of the season Finale/Episode 5 of Telltales The Walking dead game season 2. I got both and I had more fun playing the season finale of The Walking Dead. That was my decision for the Studio award nominee. I chose Telltales games. Not only because of that reason but Nintendo has been doing stupid stuff last and this year.

                1. Goes to show that your “nobody cares about those other species” is just YOUR opinion and not everyone elses here. I even voted for Assassin’s creed black flag and The wolf among us in some categories :)

                  1. I agree with Jester! I like Nintendo a lot (and own both a Wii U and a 3DS), but honestly, they didn’t deserve to win every category. Especially “Best Audio” and “Best Visual Design.” There was nothing awe inspiring in Nintendo’s audio and graphics this year.

Still- I hope they win “Most Wanted”, “Best Multiplayer”, and GOTY.

                    1. You’re drawing a target on your own back, Hollow. I like Nintendo, Steam, indie games, and my 360, but it seems like if you don’t take a side you end up being an enemy of all 3 of the major home console fanboys. Nintendo fanboys hate you for liking Xbox; Sony fanboys hate you for liking Nintendo; etc.
There really is no way to like a variety of video games without making enemies- it seems.

                      1. Lol I’ve already drawn enough targets on my back. I don’t care what anyone has to say anymore. I like all three of the gaming consoles this gen!

          1. I’m surprised there was no info about Fire Emblem vs. SMT at e3. By the sounds of things, this is going to be a pretty legit’ crossover. I’m looking forward to it.

              1. Don’t be so quick to get mad. He might be referring to Capcom since the company is on life support right now.

        2. Mario Kart 8 deserves all five of the awards. I voted for it all five times too. I can’t get over how amazing it’s audio is either. It has the best music track I think I’ve ever listened to. I still have it’s tunes stuck in my head!

Dolphin Shoals has the best track, I think. I hate the level itself (Dolphin Shoals and Piranha Plant Slide piss me off so much), but it has awesome music!

            1. UGH! No matter what I do, I always lose on those levels. I play like I’m a Mario Kart pro, but I always get hit by a million items, because it is such a small confined area in both of the tracks. In Dolphin Shoals especially, it seems like every time I go over the air blowing pipes, someone unleashes a lightning bolt… -_-

              1. lol yea I agree with the lightning in the pipes, hate that, 6 coins gone instantly! I feel there should be more item boxes too, and they should be touching. I hate when I go right between the boxes, or the whole pack starts off together and only a few get the boxes. Piranha plant slide I have extra practice from playing 7 so I usually own that board. Ever notice sometimes when you go off a ramp and are going left or right CLEARLY, and yet when you land your guy drifts the opposite direction even though you clearly have the joystick in the right direction? The very last turn of wario stadium DS seems to be the worst. Doesn’t happen too often but when it does, kiss your lead goodbye. What’s your NNID if you’re down to race sometime?

          1. The new rainbow road also has an amazing track ! After playing MK8 for 6hrs straight, I was extremely sleepy but I couldn’t sleep at all .The track got stuck in my head. I thought I was going crazy because of it.

            1. Yeah, I love that track as well! Overall, adding in the orchestra sounding music really helps bring the game’s atmosphere together.

The game looks, feels and SOUNDS epic.

        3. Certainly no award is more deserved than DKC:TF soundtrack. Hope they get it, the music is just outstanding in that game.

          1. Agreed! I love the more ambient music of the Donkey Kong Country series like Aquatic Ambiance or Stickerbrush Symphony. I prefer the original 16-bit versions from the original Country games, though, but it doesn’t stop the remixes from being great.

        4. No MK8 is just an over hyped game. It’s not all that trust me. It gets kind of boring after awhile. The battle mode needs DLC. I was suprised DKTF won best visuals though. I think Pikmin 3 should have won something too.

        5. Most Wanted: Xenoblade Chronicles X (A shame this game isn’t on there.)

Best Indie Game: The Letter (Hah! Not really. Just fucking with ya.)

Best Visual Design: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

          Best Multiplayer: Mario Kart 8

Best Audio: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Best Gaming Moment: Mario Kart 8 — Luigi Death Stare

          Best Handheld Game: Bravely Default

Gaming Platform of the Year: Nintendo 3DS

Studio of the Year: Retro Studios (Why the fuck isn’t it on there!?)

Game of the Year: Super Mario 3D World

              1. Also, it’s going by 2013-2014. Like how the MTV Music Awards of 2014 is 2013-2014. All award systems do that when they do this mid-year award stuff.
