Letters have apparently been sent out to GameStop employees in Spain telling them that their stores are closing. The company says that they will try and transfer some stores to another retailer in an effort to help the workers retain their jobs. Here’s what the letter says in English.
To all the workers,
Gamestop has taken the hard decision of leaving the spanish market.
After nine years supporting and investing in Spain in order to build a profitable business and despite all of your efforts, we couldn’t make it.
Right now we are working on the posibility of transfering a group of stores to another retailer, thereby achieving that the jobs of the employees of this shops can be kept.
In the next days you’ll recieve more information on the process, and I ask you that, within the delicate situation this assumes, among all get that the control of the business and the product be an added value to use in the negotiation of the trespassing of some of your stores.
I attach the formal communication letter of the start of the process, and I’m yours to clear up your doubts.

Kind of a pain. Have you noticed that they’re beginning to shift towards a phone and tablet based store? They’ve got a teeny section at my local gamestop which seems to get bigger every year.

I’m from Catalonia, most of people in Spain prefer to buy games in Game stores, or Media Market. I’m not sure how is abroad but in Spain games are sold much more expensive in GameStop than in other places, plus there are just a few of them, it’s not an important company here.
I’m andalusian, and I swear you that what you said is completely wrong, at least in my community.
In Andalusia, people buy games in Game or Gamestop, but we don’t like to buy games in Fnac, Amazon or Media Markt, for example.
Personally, I prefer Gamestop, but its shop is far away from my town (about 30 km) so I must go to Game.
For me, it’s a pity this, and I feel bad for the employees.
I am from Andalucia too (sort of) and when I go to Game/GameStop stores with my little brother I can’t help but notice how expensive games are there. Even second hand games are shockingly expensive. It does not get any better in other retailers either (Fnac, MM, Carrefour, Cortex Ingles…)
We could be talking about £20 difference in some cases. I think it might be due to the fact that online market is almost non-existant in Spain. I know UK market is the hell of a lot more competitive because of it and that normally drives prices down.
Sorry to hear that another business is shutting down. Probably last thing we need in Spain is more people out of work.. Anyway, this type of businesses should be adapting to the future already and not delaying a necessary transition. There is not future if they keep doing things in the old fashion way.

Lol, people are worried about this, Gamestop closed completely already in Portugal here in 2010 and no one was worried then, now because it’s Spain people are worried? There are a bunch of stores that sell games, like, Gamestop isn’t doing nothing special
