NPD: Here’s The Best-Selling Games In The United States During October

We’ve finally got October’s NPD sales results for the United States. The NPD Group says consumers spent $790.7 million on games, accessories and hardware during the month of October. Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 3DS had a good month, as the game was the second best-selling software in the US during October. However, it should be noted that Bayonetta 2 failed to make the top ten. Anyway, here’s the top ten best-selling games according to NPD data.

  1. NBA 2K15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  2. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS)
  3. The Evil Within (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360, PC)
  4. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (360, PS3, PC)
  5. Destiny (360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
  6. Skylanders: Trap Team (360, Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, 3DS, mobile)
  7. FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, PS Vita, 3DS)
  8. Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)
  9. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, XBox One, PC)
  10. Minecraft (360, PS3, PS4)

“October 2014 marks the first 12 months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4,” said Callahan. “After the first year, these consoles have had a great start as cumulative sales are currently over 70 percent higher than the combined first year totals of Xbox 360 and PS3.”

“The NPD Group also confirmed that the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U hardware made up 80 percent of the money spent on game-related products in October.”

    1. Its not doing good. Who knew that eliminating 2 platforms and putting it on another that not only has a smaller install base, but also is notorious for almost never supporting 3rd party wasn’t such a good idea.

      1. what are you talking about no consoles were eliminated. they tried to get bayonetta 2 on xbox and ps4 but were turned down because of their big budget. nintendo was the only one willing to help them.

        1. Of course they weren’t eliminated, Sega just refuse to make the second one. but who in their right mind thought that putting Bayo2 on a single console would do better or equal numbers to when it was on 2 consoles instead of one.

        2. By eliminated I meant that there’s no way in hell that this game will end up in the other 2 consoles (instantly eliminated) because Ninty funded and published the game.

          1. It was intended to be top ten. But Wii U owners don’t buy 3rd party regardless if it’s a port or real effort

            1. Not true. If it did a lot better in UK than US and Japan combined with a total of 510,000+ worldwide on a single console within a week by now compare to Bayonetta 1 on PS3/360 less than 1.4 million by March 31, 2010 which took about 5 months from Japan’s first launch date to reach with both versions (may have have sold around 2 million by now), then there is hope for the game to continue its series.

Remember, at 2010, PS3/360 had a decently high install base and the first game only did 1.3-4 million from both platforms within 5 months. That was a poor sales effort there. Now, look at the Wii U exclusive sequel which did 500,000+ within less than 2 weeks period not counting the fact that the holidays are approaching and the attach rate is much higher within Nintendo platform. The game can reach the same numbers or higher of the previous game in far lesser time after Christmas so the game still has a chance to succeed in the end. If two 60+ million consoles from last gen only bought 1.3-4 million in 5 months combined compare to 500,000+ on a single platform in less than two weeks, then that’s saying the PS/Xbox don’t care about the game more than Nintendo fans does. Look at the numbers and tell me again with a straight face that this game failed because its Nintendo fans who don’t buy 3rd party games because its clear to me that you don’t think, believe and research for your own good when it comes down to Nintendo. You disappoint me as an excuse for a debate opponent.

              1. I’m not sure that it reached over 500k.. Heck I’ll be sursprised if it surpassed 350k.. Nonetheless Bayonetta is a great game that deserves to sell more.

                1. Japan sold 138,000+ in the first week followed by 230,000+ in UK and 130,000+ in US. Thats approximately 500,000+ globally right now. It seems to be doing a bit better than the first game did 5 years ago. If Bayonetta 2 can do 2+ million on one platform by Christmas which is around 2 months time compare to 2+ million Bayonetta 1 on two platforms in 4-5 years, then it performed a lot better than before and Bayonetta can stay with Nintendo.

                  1. You have got to be kidding me if you think Bayonetta 2 is getting to 2 million by Christmas. That’s next month. Lol.

                    1. And so far in Bayonetta 2’s first week launch in every major nation, it collectively sold more than 500,000 within two-three weeks with Japan being first. That’s better than what Bayonetta 1 did with two consoles of 60m install bases separately and combined. 1.4m in 5 months on two 60+m sold platforms is barren. Wii U with the install base of 8+ million manage to convince 500,000+ sold copies in a couple of weeks. Don’t say it has no chance because with those numbers that vastly improved from the first game, Bayonetta still has a chance to stay with Nintendo.

If they manage to sell 1-3 million somewhere after Christmas which is far less time with far more copies sold than Bayonetta 1 on PS3/360 in 4 years, then I wanna see and read that’s you’re wrong and have abandoned your optimism for Nintendo for the sake of the shittier 3rd party games and support treatment.

                      1. How can Bayonetta 2 reach 2 million by Christmas? I never said it couldn’t get to that, I’m only saying it’s unlikely because that isn’t that far away.

                        1. I see that you’ve given up hope without trying. I’m done. Go play with your broken AC Unity, Avanced Warfare or whatever other POS overhyped game you have or want.

                          1. Oh for gods sake. Here we go with this shit again. I’m going to try to explain this in the best possible way that I can to you. Just because I am concerned with the sales of the game doesn’t mean that I hate or don’t care about the game. I’ve loved Bayonetta 2 since its E3 trailer. And now let me talk about the third party games. First off, I could care less about CoD Advanced Warfare. And next, I’ve seen the issues with Assassin’s Creed Unity and yes it did make me upset that they messed it up. I didn’t just go “Oh wow! The new Assassin’s Creed! I got to have it now!” Because I’m not a Ubisoft sheep that just overlooks all the problems that they have. You might think I am but I am far from a fanboy. If I was that crazy about Assassin’s Creed, don’t you think I would’ve gotten a PS3 or 360 to play all the games? Anyways, just because I am disappointed with the lack of third party games on the Wii U doesn’t mean that I do not care about the games that Nintendo makes. If you would have actually been paying attention, you would know that I’m hyped about the games just as much as any other Nintendo fan. Just because I’m not all “Oh fuck Playstation and Xbox and screw all third party developers” doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the games. I don’t even have a fucking Wii U anymore and I am still just as excited for Splatoon as I was before. My only main issue with the Wii U is that it does not have all the third party games I want to play. And I like to play a lot of third party games so that’s a huge issue for me. You can keep trying to sugarcoat the situation and boast about how Nintendo has the best games, but I don’t care. I’m not going to just sit the fuck here and play Nintendo games for yet another generation. If Nintendo will not listen and try to get more third party support, then I will obviously go to the place that I CAN get more third party games. That doesn’t mean that I just hate Nintendo all of a sudden. It just means that once I get my third party fix out of the way, I can then go back and get a Nintendo platform as a secondary system. I don’t know where in the hell you’re getting the idea that I will turn all anti-Nintendo just because I’m not satisfied with what they’re doing. I’ve said it tons of times before and I will say it again. I am an unbiased gamer and I am willing to play and enjoy all games and consoles. And note that I said “willing”. That means I’m open to try the console but that does NOT mean that I am not allowed to dislike it. I have already owned the Wii U before so everything that I don’t like about it is not just me spewing out ignorant bullshit. I have yet to own a PS4 or an Xbox One so I’m not judging either of them until I’ve owned them. You can’t tell me what games are and aren’t good unless you’ve played them for yourself. I don’t just look at shit and say that it’s automatically bad and I especially hate when other people do it. Why can’t everybody just talk peacefully about whatever they like or dislike about these systems? It always has to end up in some dumbass console war with all sides shouting out retarted nonsense. I myself sometimes like to joke around about the consoles and make fun of them and watch fanboys fight, but everyone always wants to take shit too seriously to the point where it’s making me not even want to fucking joke anymore. Everyone else can keep participating in this stupid ass war while I just sit back and enjoy the news about all gaming platforms. Absolutely ridiculous…

                          2. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Yeah if Bayonetta 2 was in top ten like Xbox One version of watch dogs then that question wouldn’t be doubtful.notice I’m using Xbox One version because it’s coming from the only system with the install base lower than Wii U’s. That’s why I can’t compare Bayonetta 2 sales to the other versions.

                          1. Because everything on Google is reliable, am I right. Also, if it is so easy to use Google, how come you absolutely fucked it up ? I just checked the weekly reports of Japan and Bayonetta sold 150k in its first week my ass, because in reality, it moved a mere 49k in 3 weeks. Debuted on number 3 with 38k in the first week, followed by roughly 7k in its second week, 3k in the third week, and dropped out of the top 20 in its fourth week.
Makes me question the credibility of the rest of the numbers you’ve given.

                          1. No worries. I tried to find the links for this denier somewhere but I couldn’t anymore. I know UK region currently sold more in its opening week with US in 2nd and Japan last which is depressing.

                          2. That’s because there’s no proof, at least one of the numbers he has given, the numbers for Japan, were absolutely incorrect. I don’t know about the US, but I very highly doubt Bayonetta sold 230k in the UK. I mean, we’re talking about the -UK- here, a country where games like Fifa, CoD etc. dominate. I sure as hell won’t believe those numbers unless I see actual proof for it, since they seem very unrealistic.

                    2. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Dissapoint? OK. Funny watch dogs stayed on Xbox One top ten longer than Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta didn’t do it though and Wii U has a larger install base.

                      1. Overhyped GTA clone full of lies about being what the 2012 version was.

And this is Bayonetta we’re talking about. It barely did 2 million in 4 years on two consoles with the install base of 65m separately which is 130+ million PS3/360 owners. Bayonetta 2 on a 8m installed Wii U consoles did 500,000+ in 2-3 weeks compare to Bayonetta 1 on either PS3/360 did in lesser time.

And WTF bring up Watchdogshit with Bayonetta which are both different games but one of them delivered with flying colors while the other lied about it was hyped to be? Irrelevant much?

                        1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Yeah I know Bayonetta 2 and Watch Dogs are totally different games. But I had to use some 3rd party game from a system with a lower install base than Wii U. Xbox one version of watch dogs lasted top ten longer than Bayonetta 2. Now if Ubisoft gave Wii U’s version of watch dogs the real effort like PS4 Xbox One, and released at the same time, what would be the chances it wouldn’t sell any better than it when watch dogs debuts this month? I blame the 7 million Wii U owners. They only want Mario games.

                          1. And there you go repeating the same, typical weak BS I hear and read all the time in the internet. If it had released on the same day which was 3 days before MK8, it would’ve sold considerably well becuase the hype was always there from 2012. The pulled that same stunt they did with Rayman Legends, only this time is not out of misjudgement or stupidity, it was deliberate to damage the Wii U reputation even more to make those people leave that platform and go buy a PS4/Xbox DOne just so they can buy their other incomplete crap like Unity.

Don’t be so stupid and open your mind. They never gave Nintendo fans a single reason to respect, trust and support them and that’s not gonna change after the disrespect they’ve given the fans and on top of that, they’re doing the same to PC as well shipping faulty products for profit without testing the fucking game first. Don’t come at me about Nintendo fans not buying their stuff because Nintendo game are better. That’s not only the case and the other reason why is looking at their lazy and selfish progress themselves. Watchdogs is a lie and AC Unity on PC continues pissing off that platform. Most of the big third parties right now are taking shortcuts and cheating out of your wallet with false promises. Now, go waste your time talking BS somewhere else. It’s not working anymore.

                        2. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Yeah I know Ubisoft played Nintendo. But Bayonetta 2 being the first Wii u 3rd party tittle and all, with the effort to actually work Wii U, graphics, game play, 1080p 60fps, shows that even if Ubisoft never played Nintendo and gave AC4 and if Ghost had all the effort like PS4 it still would have sold like shit. Otherwise what’s the reason why 7 million Wii u owners couldn’t keep this game in top ten more than a week compared to 3D World, Wind Walker HD, Pikmin 3 and MK8? Last time I checked Wii U had a smaller install when those exclusives first debuted and Wind Walker and Pikmin 3 were hardly advertised like Bayonetta 2 was. So why would a 3rd party developer put money into a wii u tittle for aiming 1080p 60fps, DLC and sell like Bayonetta 2 when they can put 30fps on Xbox one and it will last for over a month with a smaller install base under 5 million according to you?

                          1. You’re forgetting a few key factors. Why AC4/Ghosts failed was because of lack of DLC options same with Arkham Origin with that and cutting multiplayer. Bayonetta’s case, the first game didn’t do well on two consoles either. 1.3/4 million copies in 5 monthson both PS3/360? Compare to Bayonetta 2’s 500,000+ in 2 weeks on one 8m installed platform that is new to Bayonetta series. You say the fans are the problem but you blindly ignore other factors of what affects the sales overall thus proving you’re stupid to blame on one source.

                        3. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Also may I add, since you are comparing how Bayonetta 1 sold on ps3/360 to Bayonetta 2. Funny how Sonic, a well known character hasn’t seen top 10 charts. I know what you probably will say'” it’s not Colors or Adventures doesn’t matter. 3D World isn’t a galaxy 3 and it’s easy a fuck and it sold well with 4 million wii u owners at the time. After Knack sold better than Sonic Lost World (at least it made top 10 more than a week) and at the time PS4’s install base was smaller than Wii u’s. Yet that new IP sold well yet Wonderful 101 a new IP couldn’t? Interesting how 7 Million Wii u owners will do anything for Mario and Zelda. I mean DKTF wasn’t what Nintendo fans were asking for but it made top 10 more than a week. People didn’t ask for NSMBU. Nintendo Wii U owners wanted a 3D tittle. Yet Bayonetta 2 sold like shit.

                        4. I’m going by the fact because Bayonetta is new to Wii U owners? You say? So was knack and that lasted more than a week. So did Watch dogs and that lasted more than a week. Hyped? Bayonetta 2 was hyped too like Knack and Watch Dogs three new 3rd party IPS.

                        5. Oh Bayonetta 2 is new so that’s the reason it flopped? OK Sonic’s been around why did lost world’s flop? Now wait you’ll probably say it wasn’t Colors or Adventures? I’m mean Watch Dogs is 30fps and nothing like GTA? Yet it sold better and a totally new IP just like. Bayanetta 2 to Wii U owners. And up Bayanetta was rated higher than Knack, Watch Dogs and Lost World’s. Answer? Wii U owners don’t buy 3rd party. So therefore if UniSoft did really work the gamepad for Watch Dogs, delayed the other versions so they can allllllll debut together Wii U’s wouldn’t surprise me if the sells were still shift.

            2. It was a fan-initiative, aiming to convince people to buy Bayonetta 2 in order to show everyone, especially developers, that WiiU owners do support 3rd-party when they get decent titles.

              1. Just thought it was the one since both IGN and GameSpot reported on it that way, but you might be right. It was such a farfetched ambitious goal though, the original only moved about 2 million with an install base of over 140 million (Both PS3 and 360 combined) this one had no chance.

                1. I absolutely agree. And apart from that, having random people on the internet tell you to buy a game isn’t going to make you go spend $60 if you weren’t intending to buy the game anyway. People bought it because it’s a good game, not because strangers on the internet told them to. The whole thing just seemed silly to me personally, to be honest.

                  1. It didn’t do horrible though. It actually outsold Wonderful 101 in it’s first week. It’s at about 350k and i’m sure it will hit 500k this Christmas. One million lifetime sales is not out of the question.

                    1. Now that I think about it, Bayonetta 2 isn’t really being advertised. I haven’t seen a single ad for it yet and it’s rare that I see it in stores either. It’s like the game doesn’t even exist. With games like Smash Bros about to come, I think this was a missed opportunity. It’s going to get overlooked. And the fact that it is M rated will also make it harder to sell since only adults can buy it. :/

                      1. It has a few short commercials on youtube, but nothing substantial. No t.v. commercials to my knowledge. Nintendo should have treated bayonetta like one of there own. I don’t understand why they would put up so much money to have the game made, just to fall short on the advertisement…

                      2. Bayonetta 2 may not be advertised on TV but nearly 2 million people see it when turning on the gamepad to play MK8 or goinng on the eshop getting MK8 DLC.

                          1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

But it was advertised in front of nearly 2 million MK8 owners who used DLC for Link. You’re right, it doesn’t mean they are going to buy it, they don’t buy 3Rd party games to stay in top ten for weeks like PS4 games can…besides a 1st party exclusive.

          1. It is nice to see Evil Within in 3rd place. Oldschool horror games still sell in US so maybe Nintendo should release new Fatal Frame outside of japan.

        1. If this list was game by game, Smash would be #1, and probably Bayonetta could enter the Top 10. Of course a game in 3 consoles each with 100k, for example, could beat Bayo if it sold 200k. But I’m glad I bought it! :D

          1. I wanted Bayonetta 2 sales to prove Ubisoft wrong that Wii u owners buy 3rd party when the game has all the features. So Wii U owners only buy Nintendo games. After all funny MK8 another game that was rated high like Bayonetta on reviews stayed in top ten sellers for months. I want to know what Wii U onwers exuse is now?

            1. We already did, ZombiU and Rayman AFTER the BS delay. I don’t understand why or how Bayonetta 2 would flop like that other than the low shipments of its retail copies. This is the first serious 3rd party exclusive the system had with all of the features and no BS excuses. I really hope to god the sales improve for the holidays.

          1. Ignoring MK8 came out at the end of the month too and it was top ten. Don’t make Excuses for 7.3 million Wii U cheap only buy 1st party game owners. They complain broke all the time buy 3D world and MK8 áat launch reached top ten.

          1. I’m tired of that song “just wait until such and such come out” Yeah right. Nintendo fans brag and brag about Wii U’s install base larger than Xbox. At least Xbox owners actually BUY GAMES!

        2. You Wii U owners suck!!!! Y’all make excuses after excuses. First excuse was 3rd party doesn’t put their all into it. Now when Bayonetta 2 arrives you 7 million Wii U oners didn’t support. What’s y’all excuse now? Too expensive? Funny PS4 owners ain’t rich, yet why is PS4 games top ten all the time?

            1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

9 out of 10 multi plat another excuse? Sunset overdrive was top ten longer than Bayonetta 2 and Xbox has a smaller in stall base. Sunset even outsold multi plats. Stop making excuse for 7.3 million Wii U owners that only want Mario and Zelda tittles besides me.

          1. You really can be a right dumbfuck at times, y’know that right? You should go back to the Mr Ignore name you had since you are ignoring a number of factors of why Bayonetta 2 isn’t selling as good as it should: it’s a niche title even amongst Nintendo games, it’s mature, not enough TV advertising, it released at the end of October, it’s not Mario Kart so of course it isn’t going to sell millions like Mario Kart 8 did in 2 days. Most importantly, you ignore the sad fact that not even Nintendo’s biggest Zelda titles & main Mario titles sell millions upon millions of titles. At most, Zelda sells at least close to 5 million, if lucky. With all that in mind, I can see Bayonetta 2 being in the same boat as many of Nintendo’s other biggest titles in a franchise that isn’t Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros.

        3. Pingback: Smash Bros For Nintendo 3DS Is The Best-Selling Hand-Held Title So Far In 2014 | My Nintendo News

        4. Also Im tired of 7.3 Wii U owners bitching about bad teaste in UK games. At least Xbox One owners buy the games to be top ten……while you Wii U owners can’t even support what little 3rd party Wii U has. Obviously Sonic Boom won’t make top ten because it’s not a Nintendo game. Seeing no Bayonetta 2 top ten says it wouldn’t matter if Watch Dogs was released on time or delayed it still would have sold like shit. So why should a 3rd party put all the effort to make a game around Wii U? Bayonetta 2 didnt make the cut. What’s the excuse now?

          1. Also don’t use the excuse because Bayonetta wasn’t advertised. 7.3 million Wii U owners saw Bayontta 2 advertised when over a million people turned on their gamepad to play Mario Kart 8.

        5. Lol YOU Nintendolls didn’t support this awesome game because Nintendolls just play nothing but baby Mario games and Baby Pokemon games, the babies are waiting for Smash Bros and their Barbie Amiibo toys.

Bayonetta 2 was proof that the 7million Wii U owners are 6 to 12 olds.

          Nintendo screwed up big time

          Next games to FLOP

          Xenoblade X
          Splatoon
          Yoshi WW
          Kirby

            1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Actually there is some truth what he is saying. MK8 DLC was downloaded over a million times. What are the chances those Wii U owners didn’t see Bayonetta 2 advertised on Shop or on the game pad before downloading MK8 DLC? Funny how Smash Bros. Wii U is the most pre ordered game and its not advertised like PS4 or Xbox one tittles. I blame Wii u owners.

          1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Wrong Yoshi and Kirby are Nintendo games. Wii U owners will buy those. Its the 3rd party that no matter how much effort then put in will still flop. Bayonetta 2 proved that.

        6. Retards.
Lets just wait the official sales number from the one who actually knows the sales numbers.
There is no telling how well the game sold, until Nintendo tells the digital sales numbers, and the actual exact physical sales numbers.

          1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Wait for the sells numbers? Ignoring the lack of sells in Lego City Undercover, Lost World’s, W101. They never made top ten sellers and Bayonetta 2 lasted one time. So assuming those older 3rd party tittles flopped according to the charts, I’m going to take it these charts are accurate today like back then.

        7. No commercials or magazine articles.
Not even a single promotional product was made to catch peoples attention.
The only franchise Nintendo ever seems to care about marketing is the Mario Series. Heck, even DKC: Tropical Freeze got a promotional event with the Banana Mania Contest.

          1. TV ad.
            Playboy coverage.
            Dozens of YT vids.
            Every E3 since 2012.
Just because a exclusive could not get on top10 against plethora of multiplat titles meant for casual gamers, does not mean the game sold bad.
Console fanboys are amusing, flipping out because of sales data, which even does not tell the whole story.

            1. Where in my post did I ever say the game sold badly?
And what gives you the impression that I’m a “fanboy”?
Jesus Christ. People just love to misinterpret any given situation.

Dumb comment board? Where were you when the comment board saw Knack sells sucking? It was top ten one week like Bayonetta 2 then off the charts the nest week. Yet when Nintendo fans said that flopped why didn’t you defend Knack?

No commercials? Neither was the DLC for Mk8 advertised on TV. Funny how that was downloaded on Wii U over a million times and over a million people also saw Bayonetta 2 before downloading too. Another weak ass excuse to try defending 7 million WiiU owners for not buying. Funny 3D World stayed at top ten for months and it only had a 4 million install base back then.

        8. That’s amazing, well done Smash Bros, well done Nintendo and most importantly, well done Sakurai and thank you Sakurai for putting so much effort into this great 3DS game. I hope that your hard work gets rewarded in a big way for the Wii U version. I doubt the Wii U version will position as well on the chart as it will only be available for 9 days of the month, but hopefully it makes the top 10 for this month………

        10. All these idiots yelling doom for Bayonetta 2 on a fucking list that groups multiplats into one fucking slot. Of course the damn game, on one console, is not going to be on a top ten list! A game, might I add, wasn’t really a great seller on the previous consoles either. Some of you just want that game to fail so bad for some reason, huh? Whatever. Continue on with the Nintendo hate. Meanwhile, I’ll go & actually enjoy Bayonetta because at the end of the day, FUCK SALES!!
