Xenoblade Chronicles X Is So Big That The Developers Thought They Might Have To Ship It On Two Discs

We heard plenty of interesting details about Xenoblade Chronicles X yesterday, thanks to a lengthy article in Famitsu. Now we’ve heard from Xenoblade Chronicles X producer Shingo Kawabata who says that the game is so big that the team initially thought they may have to ship it on two discs. There can be no doubt that the game world will be absolutely ginormous.

[Kawabata] Xenoblade Chronicles X is using up most of the space on the Wii U disk. It’s really, really close to the storage limit. (To the point that at one stage we were considering using more than one disk for the game). To enjoy playing, the enormous seamless map must load quickly (which was achieved through the hard work of our programming division), but we had help from Nintendo proper implementing a further improvement to what we had. I believe we’re going to reveal the details of that on the official page in the future, but to people considering purchasing the packaged version of the game, as one of the game’s developers, I highly recommend you make use of this improvement.

Thanks, N-Dub Nation

      1. As someone thinking about getting an external hard drive just for the Wii U, might I know what hdd you are using? Is it that WD Passport? And did it work with the cable packaged with it, or did you have to maybe buy a specific y-cable or something like that to get Wii U to recognize it?

      2. You would be surprised how quickly that TB gets filled. Especially if your going fully digital. I’m almost out of space.

    1. Why? He just said that there is an improvement that he recommends to people buying the packaged version of the game. Which sounds like it’s not needed for the downloaded version. And since this is about loading times, it probably means that you can do some installing to disc, so that loading times becomes as fast as with a digital copy.

    1. its a seamless world

you just created a seam where when you reach a certain area, you not only get a loading screen but a “flip disk” message forcing you to get up and turn it mid game…. every time you pass that point

    2. Well, I don’t know if you ever looked at a blue ray disk, but they are actually see through, it basically is designed to read both sides from one side, that’s why it says 25gb, 50gb dual layer

    3. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Screw that! I HATE double sided discs. It’s probably one of the stupidest ideas ever thought of for discs.

  1. Wow! Sounds really awesome. Glad to hear exactly “how” big the game is. All we knew was it was going to be “big,” but in open world video games, “big” can mean Skyrim Big or Sonic Boom Big.

We also knew it would be 5x the size of the original Xenoblade game, but this does put it in more perspective. I just hope exploring this game is done right and doesn’t feel too big if you know what I mean.

            1. Yes.
              With Mechs.
Mechs that can roll out like tanks, and FLY FREELY, with the push of a button.
With monsters to fight that are even bigger than the mechs themselves.

Oh, and your team-mates also have mechs.
And there’s a faction[think guild] with quests entirely dedicated to making your bad-ass mech even more bad-ass.[Oh, and there’s at least 6 or 7 other factions besides them]

And did I mention you can switch between melee and ranged combat at will now, and that it actually makes a difference in how the battle goes?

              Yeah.
You’re gonna have a lot to do in this game.XD

              1. Ah, ok, thanks for that. If Skyrim took like hours to get to places, I can’t imagine on X (which will be really fun). And to actually fly with those mechs above that massive piece of land! Might as well pretend you’re an airplane sometimes.

    2. Xenoblade X is much bigger than Skyrim at a colossal 400-km^2. You talk as if Skyrim is the standard for open-world games. Xenoblade X has karate kicked Skyrim in the face. Xenoblade X is Xenoblade X big!

  2. i got a 3TB external on launch day. it has paid for itself in digital download promotion codes and there is hardly a dent in it. the max size xenoblade X could be is 25GB so that’s not a big deal.

    1. 3TB is an astronomical amount of space. Do you really think you’ll use 3,000 gigs of memory in your lifetime? One TB would be more than sufficient.

      1. i feel like with nintendo being loyal to backwards compatibility i will be able to use it on future console. if not, it only takes about 80 Xenoblade X’s to fill it (as a 3TB is actually only around 2GB + a bit).

      2. I think the Wii U is only able to use up to 2 TB, if I’m not mistaken. I have 2, just to be sure never to run out!

        1. no, i for sure have a Western Digital 3TB and it works fine. in fact i think the wiiu is capable of supporting two of them.

        1. 3TB is alot for a console. It’s alot for a PC too to be honest. You would have to be downloading some serious software to use up 3k gigs. Although I’m sure some people have. There are not enough games on the Wii U and eshop combined to use up half of that.

      1. I know… It’s literally an hour away from me in Austin. I’m so hoping they migrate to my city soon. I’m only wired for ATT at the moment here and I freaking hate ATT.

      2. No I hate google. They are destroying youtube.. Google is not the cool, trendy coorporation everyone thinks they are. Thats an act they put on. They are no better than Microsoft in my opinion. Worse actually for what they did, and are currently doing to youtube.

  3. they will probably let you preload it before launch like they did for smash to cut back on bandwidth slowdown for midnight launches. so that means at midnight on launch i will be able to fire up the game while all the physical copy people have to wait. :P

  4. No way and hell would I get the digital version. Hell, I could still sell the original Xenoblade for 70 dollars if I wanted to.

There is no value in digital games. No resell value, no trading to a friend value, no playing the game on a different console value. I download smaller games, but never the big triple A games.

    1. would you sell it though? i only buy smaller games so i can trade them back in. but i would never sell back my AAA titles. i never have and i never will. that’s why i’m out of shelf space.

      1. sherlockwillfightbilbo

That’s a good point. I’ve only ever sold maybe three games, and even now I feel some regret as I wish to try them out again.

I’d never sell a Zelda or Xenoblade game unless I became absolutely dirt poor.

      2. I don’t sell my games. But it’s nice to know that I can if I wanted to. Just seems like it would be a waste to download Xenoblade. Just my opinion though.

    2. I feel the exact same way. I’ll never be on the digital front. That is always the plus side to physical games, they can be resold and simply taken elsewhere if need be. The only time I’ll buy digital is for games I know I won’t sell for a very long time or mainly more online based games I just might want to jump right into instead of popping in the disc.

Other than that I always choose physical over digital, plus it’s nice to actually have something in hand. It is even better if the world were to spiral into complete chaos and no online existed anymore, least you’ll still have physical discs to use until your dead so long as you can still access electricity.

Lol, I’d be the type of person playing my consoles on a gas generator…

      1. I have actually done that before.. We had tornadoes and lost power for six days. It was nice to play the Wii U without having to use my T.V…(you could only plug in so much at a time)

      1. 360 has a buncha multi-disc games.

& yet, when a Nintendo console in the 6th gen (i.e. GameCube) sometimes required games to be on 2 discs, it was taboo & another reason to hate Nintendo. But A-okay for PS2 & Dreamcast to require games to be on upwards of 4 discs. Interestingly, Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast was on 2 discs, yet the enhanced GCN port was only 1, albeit w/ reduced quality of music.

Oh, & apparently only kids play Resident Evil, Killer7, Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, & Conan; M-rated (Pegi 16+ for Conan), multi-disc games on Nintendo’s “kiddie” little console.

          1. It was the Dreamcast that had 4-disc games (D2 & Shenmue 2), while PS2 only reached 2-disc games. Sorry, I prolly should’ve separated the disc limits for the 2 consoles.

  5. physical for 3DS and digital for wii U. it made alot of sense when they launched it with a Digital Download Promotion. you don’t lose the discs to theft, fire, or degradation so that’s a bonus. and you get to conserve your optical drive while getting faster loading speeds. i did mention i have no more shelf space right? even playstation has a game streaming cloud service now and is tempting me into getting one of those cheap playstation tv things.

    1. What’s the difference. Nintendo has no cloud storage. And if they did, I’m sure you’d able to do it with a disc too… and what, so all those things you listed can happen to discs and not the Wii U itself?

  6. Ehhh the fact that the 360 version of Dragon Age is 2 disks (one to download first and then the 2nd to play the game)
And the xboxone was one disk.

  8. HYPE its on one disc END OF DECCUSION…..

NINTENDO ARE COMPRESSION MASTERS never was a issue and expresso cpu code can be compressed wuththe data comressin tricks it supports

    1. that makes no sense. you buy it digital and you download it and it’s yours to keep. it is tied to you ID so if your hard drive fails you can re-download it.

  9. 2 DISKS!?!?! DAMN JUST HOW BIG IS THIS GAME!!!!! I thought developers didn’t have to use 2 disks for anything anymore! But the fact that this game was about to need 2 disks!!!! GOD DAMN

  10. I’m so glad they didn’t go with the two discs, they would have had to duplicate a lot of data or create roadblocks to make that work, meaning they would have to tweak the questing heavily and make it less permissive.

  13. Everyone is FEELING the hype in Xenoblade Chronicles X. Single or 2-disc, it’s still gonna be a JRPG blockbuster for the next two seasons!
