Is The Lack Of Stock For New Nintendo 3DS And Amiibo In US Down To West Coast Port Strike?

The big new Nintendo products are incredibly hard to get hold of at the moment. Both the New Nintendo 3DS and amiibo are having severe stock issues in the United States, which is inevitably causing frustration with gamers. Now this could be down to a major port strike on the west coast which has been happening for the past couple of months. The port strike has been affecting 70% of the goods that have been coming in from Asia and Nintendo’s products are produced in China. Kotaku points out that the quickest supply route is from China to North America is via the west coast. They say that this could ultimately be the cause for the shortage of New Nintendo 3DS consoles and amiibo.

Thanks, David

  1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

‹b›-The Cattle Mass: How could we have known? We only get frustrated as hell for the smallest of inconveniences!-‹/b›

    1. You don’t think the lack of information might’ve contributed to the ‘cattle’ masses over reacting? Plus Nintendo not informing the masses on why their amiibos have yet reached their stores isn’t helping either.

    1. There are still wave 3 amiibos missing from retailers that people have pre-ordered in the past 2 months, sir. This delay is in fact concerning to some of us who have been patient enough.

      1. Then cancel the pre-order and move on,its not that its needed to play videogames. Its just optional money grab for consumers that have lot of money to spend like day 1 dlc or lock on disk content. Also this is just my opinion dont take it too hard,i know its been shaky with these and i hope nintendo gets it right at least once,i mean they always have some problems with stocks with any of thei products.

        1. No way I’m cancelling my pre-order. It’s not only the fact I like training the amiibos, but I happen to like Ike and Fire Emblem very much, having any merchandise from the series is a dream since it’s not really as popular in the US.

I’m not really worried about it not coming at all? I know it’ll eventually be shipped but I’m just concerned that there hasn’t been a word out there to why there’s been a delay when the amiibo was suppose to arrive last Friday. Speculations like these don’t really answer anything.

  2. Interesting, I wonder if there is any truth to this, in that, it’s specifically shortened Amiibo supplies in the US. Stuff like this usually hits toys the hardest, because that ALL comes from China.. while DVDs and crap like that are actually being made more and more in Mexico.

    1. the Wallmrt where i live has a huge supply of Mario, Link, Pikachu, and luigi amiibo and so does the local target, and Gamestop it could be that I live inan a area that many people would rather play the Gamecube, Playstation 2, and Xbox than play current generation systems

    1. yeah it would. Any stock would come from the same place. Its not like they get shipments from both the east and west coast, they would all come from the west coast and be shipped other places from there.

  3. I don’t think so, honestly. If this was the case, Nintendo would have adressed the issue long ago, same as the retailers. After all, Nintendo will let retailers know how much stock they will receive from them, and if the problem really was caused by the strike, retailers would have told consumers that less stock has reached them than originally anticipated and planned. But before all that, Nintendo would have made a statement concerning the issue. Didn’t happen though, so to me personally, it still very much looks like it’s Nintendo messing things up. You don’t see them having shortages with WiiUs or other products, neither does this low stock problem happen with other companies; at least not to the same extend as it’s the case with Nintendo’s products.

    1. I agree. I went to my Gamestop yesterday to ask the status of my Ike amiibo and they could only tell me its delayed and they don’t even have a tracking of when it would arrive. They are as left in the dark as I am, heck the look of worry on their own faces spoke for itself. Though this doesn’t explain how people were able to obtain the MM collectors edition game in 3 days after it was ordered for some lucky people.

But yes this is indeed something Nintendo should address? Like…if something is up, let people know? I’m naturally a patient person but this is pretty strange that things are delayed and the stores dont even know what’s up.

      1. Exactly. This is obviously a huge problem, and the fact that neither consumers (and most likely) nor retailers have gotten any kind of information concerning what’s even happening, is quite strange indeed. I mean, it’s them who are getting negative resonance because of this whole situation. You would think they’d care to give people some kind of heads up, you know, for their own good and all.

And about your amiibo, have you considered ordering from Japan or Europe? I’m not very interested in them myself, but I’ve seen all kinds of amiibo in a couple of stores here, and pretty sure I’ve seen Ike among them. So you could give it a shot. :)

  4. Nintendo may want to keep this quiet b/c prices could sky rocket if the news got out and even more scalpers would step it up even harder.
You think $50 for a scalper Rosalina is bad… try $250.

  5. I’m not sure what to think of it, this is a cover your a$$ type of situation though so if it’s true they would be wise to issue a statement regarding this. but right now it looks like these shortages are intentional on their part.

  6. I live near Seattle and this strike greatly has effected local businesses and created stock issues. This morning, there were a ton of trucks lined up to pick up the shipments at the port area in Seattle because the strike has pretty much ended here, so stock might improve now.

My local GameStop said that their shipments were delayed due to this issue, but there will be some New 3DS Majora’s Mask editions coming any day now because of the shipments returning. If you live in Washington State, try checking for them tomorrow, Friday, and Monday.

  7. No. It’s because the country wanted the OTHER model with the face plates and cheaper price that has the same upgrades. Low shipping due to strike that nobody even heard of yet? MY ASS!

    1. The strike is actually a very huge deal in Seattle, it’s been all over the local news and when it was happening, you could see a very large pile up of shipments being held for months. I’m a little confused about what you’re implying about how the face plate 3DS models are relevant to this, sorry.

Don’t worry everyone if you’re looking for the Majora’s Mask edition 3DS, it’s not a limited edition, which means more shipments and restocks are scheduled for the future.

        1. It was about changing an outdated payment policy between the Union and waterfront employers. They were protesting for higher pay and better benefits (most didn’t get sick day or holiday pay and there was something about a health insurance coverage issue with some workers). They also shutdown the port for 5 whole days. It was quite a mess and I’m glad that they’ve mostly come to an agreement. I’m sorry if I didn’t describe this good enough, it has been a confusing subject where I live.

You can read more about it here, http://seattletimes.com/html/businesstechnology/2025687742_portcongressxml.html

  8. Actually the price of amiibo led to the strike because the employees wages isn’t high enough to pay for food and buy amiibo.

  9. This is very real and in some cases could explain some stock shortages that we are just starting to see and not just with amiibo. Many companies foresaw these problems and planned ahead so shelves aren’t immediately empty, but they may very well be soon. The less the consumer knows about this the more business can carry on and the less this problem shows up elsewhere. That may also explain why some pre-orders are coming far later than would normally be expected. Anyway, the port strike is very real and happening across the 29 ports that make up the destinations of over 70% of America’s imported goods. It is possible that there is at least one container out there that has nothing but amiibos and perhaps even a few new 3DS systems in it. Perhaps…

  10. The problem has pretty much been solved, at least in Seattle, and shipments are being delivered once again. There might still be a slight delay for a while due to a large buildup of undelivered units to sort through.

  11. …But I still say that Nintendo is not keeping up with the supply and demand of their consumers, so they’re trying to use this as an excuse to try to cover that fact. This issue is causing delays, but it’s not the main or only reason for the lack in Amiibos and New 3DS XL units in the US.

    1. Nintendo didn’t report this, Kotaku did. I don’t see how Nintendo is using this as a cover up the New 3Ds is in stock in every other major video game market but the states. I live in Canada and there has been no stock issues everyone that has pre odered amiibos have got them. And wave 4 hits April 24th in Canada

  12. Uhhh.. so everything is fine and dandy on the east coast? I even heard some Japanese car companies were FLYING in auto parts to distribute to North america..

So where is the east port coast hub located.

    1. Since China and Japan are closer to the West Coast then East, most shipments from there will actually arrive in the West and then shipped to the East by land and freight. So this issue has also impacted the East.

  13. Oops sorry, I assumed that “Kotaku” was a name of someone who worked for Nintendo XD. There have been stock issues since before the ports shutdown and I’ve noticed that certain items appear in the UK and Canada more frequently and sooner than in the US. I’m not sure if there is an economic or marketing reason why things take longer to get patented and distributed in the US, or if they are purposely holding back on shipments to distribute them at just the right time. Either way, let’s hope the US will see better stock for Amiibos and New 3DS XLs soon.

What I was trying to say was that I do believe that the port shutdown did cause stock issues, but there are other factors that are causing the lack of Amiibos and 3DS XLs in the US.

  14. Being someone that works in the shipping industry this is pretty funny. This is not the issue if you know anything about shipping. First of all almost all electronic products – like nintendo products, are flown into the US and Europe along with the rest of the world. Come on a container full of Amiibos!? really? hahaha

But still a good observation most people havent even heard of the strikes.
