The second installment of Nintendo Minute‘s debate series focuses on the Metroid franchise. In the episode, hosts Kit and Krysta debate whether the SNES classic Super Metroid is better than the Nintendo GameCube masterpiece Metroid Prime. Regardless of which of the two exceptional games you prefer, both of them are available on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Nintendo Minute Debates Super Metroid Vs. Metroid Prime

*cough* Super Metroid *cough* *dies from excessive coughing*
RIP ;(
w..
w?
Sorry. Typo. RIP coughing person =(
Lol
They are both amazing but: Metroid Prime > Super Metroid
Huh is there a younger userbase on here, there aren’t a lot of votes for Super Metroid. Both games are amazing but Super Metroid is simply one of the best games ever made! It tells you a story through gameplay/scenery and not through walls of text and cutscenes. It also has its own sense of humor too.
Metroid Prime is amazing but when comparing it to Super Metroid the pacing of MP kills it. In Super Metroid you are always getting upgrades that help you traverse the environment (and backtrack) faster, specifically the space jump and screw attack. MP has a lot of backtracking like a good Metroid game does but its a lot more sluggish and noticable when it lacks the area shortcuts or power ups that SM has.
I also thought that MP was lacking in the amount of boss fights and the only one that really stood out to me over time was the fight against Metroid Prime. SM has Kraid, Crocomire, Phantoon, Draygon, and let’s not forget the final boss. Oh god that fight against Mother Brain is tear inducing.
Super Metroid > Metroid Prime
Course, if Prime was actually in 3rd-person view, I probably would have liked it more.
Then go like that trash called “Other M” which nearly ruined the series. Of course you of all people don’t like what’s good like Prime.
I actually did like Other M, so sure I will. I don’t need a dope like you to tell me that.
Then you sir have the dumbest taste in games and design (that royally sucked ass like Other M)
I did like the jumping sequenses in Other M. The story and the fighting system was crap, though.
Jumping sequences? Are you serious? Mario’s jumping sequences from NES games is a lot entertaining than that shit.
I think he was referring to how smoothly the transitions between some of the gameplay and cut-scenes were. I remember running down a hall while a cutscene began, I didn’t even notice the change until those troopers showed up. Smoove~
It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be. But it isn’t really as great as the others were.
Other M would probably be Halloweens equivalent of Candy corn.

Metroid Prime, only because it was my first Metroid game. I find them both equally incredible. Hugs to all!
I be honest metroid prime was my first Nintendo game I ever owned. Soo….. yeah so much great memories.
Both incredible, both groundbreaking.
Honestly, I can’t just pick one. But if I *really really* had to, maybe I’d pick Metroid Prime, just because it’s more lengthy.
There’s no contest. Both are amazing and evolutionary in their own ways.
Metroid Fusion
The obvious result: As long as it’s not titled Other M, everything in this franchise is gold.
Other M was fun. I think they botched the whole “give bsck-story to Samus’ emotional growth thing,” because she was rsised by the Chozo, and the vulnerable thing didn’t work. They made her WAY too dependent on Adam, (not really a spoiler)
That ssid, I really enjoyed Other M. I have no idea why it’s provoked such hate in people.
As a game it was challenging and fun. but as a backstory it was stupid…
Eh, I’m not crazy about the gameplay either, movement in third person with a tiny D-Pad is not exactly the most intuitive thing, and getting locked in place while in first person is unnecessarily crippling, plus, the dodging mechanic is too broken, and the pixel searches are a frustrating and a frankly appalling downgrade from scanning.
And I wouldn’t really oversimplify the problems of the story, it’s not only a matter of it being poorly written, it’s also poorly told, which often has an impact on the fluidity of the gameplay.
The obvious verdict: As long as it’s not called “Other M”, everything in this franchise is golden.
I prefer Prime, but neither one is better than the other since they
1.) belong in different genres (1st-Person Adventure Shooter & Action-Adventure Platformer),
2.) represent different dimensions (3D & 2D),
& 3.) are from different industry eras.
Both are solid titles, so it’s a matter of preference, not which is better.
Both are amazing. The end.
As long as they never talk about Other M. Seriously, if you like Other M for its story or character “development,” you are NOT a true Metroid fan.
Or dialogue. There’s a reason no one plays a drinking game where you take a shot every time Samus says “baby.”
I’ll say what I’ve always said about Other M. Other M isn’t a bad game, it is a bad Metroid game however, much the same as I’ve heard about Banjo: N&B. Story wise, yeah it’s pretty bad, I mean you got the “baby” thing, who the hell care who Adam is? (as in no development) The infamous Ridley scene and that ending! (the first one, where you just aim). Though the game mechanics were pretty good, except I hated when I had to use rockets, but the action was pretty sweet and it was graphically pretty nice. But yes, it is by far the worst Metroid game ever released (hopefully forever). Those game mechanics though, they really scream “these are Ninja Gaiden game mechanics”
I really hope they’ve improved where they’ve obviously failed with Other M though. My dream for the next Metroid game is a 1st person game, with the eeriness similar to Alien Isolation, something bit darker but still having that Metroid feel to it, like the Prime saga managed, with flight travel would be cool too, going from loctaion to location, both on world and space. Or just a 2D or 2.5D side-scroller would be nice too. Either way, this years E3 better have something Metroid or RIOT!!!
– Other M failed to be a good Metroid game…so make a proper 2D and 3D Metroid title on the 3DS and Wii U, respectively. We’re dying for the sequel to Prime Trilogy, especially after its ending. Glasses-less 3D is the Mode 7 of the 3DS now with the new model. Make use of that with a game that builds upon what Super Metroid established.
– We’ve seen the capabilities of MK8, now extend that into DKR and F-Zero.
– We know the Wii U is capable of 1080p 60FPS games so make games that take advantage of that sort of precision in your back catalog, like Wave Race (Splatoon is a perfect example of a new IP that uses this to its advantage).
– We saw how great a potential LoZ: TP remake can look…make it happen.
– We loved what a new 3D Mario could be like with SM3DW…now give us the full experience.
– DKCR:TF is a masterpiece of a 2D platformer, but what about the great 3D fun to be had with a game that played like DK64 for the ape and his Kong family?
– Kirby is great when it sticks to innovating and improving upon its traditional gameplay…but really add something that innovates the main game series now and try to make a fully-realized 3D Kirby game.
– Luigi’s Mansion 3, anyone?
– Animal Crossing is already on its way.
– Give us an ACTUAL Fire Emblem any day on the Wii U and cancel the FE x SMTP crossover.
– Oh, and one more game before I forget: FUCKING MAKE PAPER MARIO 3 ALREADY!!!!! JdkdbhekanakqlLcnjfjfjirie!
*calms down*
In summary:
As long as Nintendo makes a sequel to the Metroid Prime Trilogy, Kirby’s Dream Land 5, a new 3D Mario, Paper Mario 3, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and a new F-Zero game, I’d be a content Nintendo fan with the reassurance that the company does indeed want to renew its ties with its core fanbase once again, with the Wii U serving as the bridge for what’s next to come, and I have every bit of confidence in the company now given its recent track record that all of this and more will come true. 😊
Also, sorry for the random bout of cursing. Not necessary, I know, but I’m tired of seeing recent Paper Mario games abandon what made the series so great to begin with, which was its very close relation in RPG mechanics to Super Mario RPG.
Paper Mario 2 felt so perfect. Everything was nailed down just right and the game was a masterpiece with such an amazing plot that is so difficult to find in Mario games where plot is absent nowadays. Best of all, PM:TTYD didn’t even remotely skimp on gameplay, which was so expertly crafted that it felt like nothing I had ever played before. It was just such an amazing classic…I hope we can finally get a PM3 for the Wii U. 😞
I agree with most the things you said but to be honest, I think that Fire Emblem does work better on the handheld. FExSMTP will be glorious
Super Paper Mario was great, and is probably my second favorite of the series behind Thousand Year Door, so I don’t it being the way it was.
You had me ’til you called for the cancelation of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem; I’m really looking forward to that game. But after that, you had me again. Sure, a mainline FE on Wii U would ALSO be welcome (Path of Radiance is still my favorite. I also miss the focus, balance, & challenge that they neglected in TSS & Awakening [the 2 most unfocused, unbalanced, & easy entries in the franchise]). Shadow Dragon, while to some extent exhibits those cons, is exempt, being a straightforward remake of the 1st game in the franchise. FE GBA was my 1st taste of the franchise, & it’s what I judge the others by.
I’m glad someone else mentioned Wave Race; I prefer that just a bit more than F-Zero).
But I wasn’t too keen on DK64, having compared it to Banjo Tooie @ the time, it I fell short (glad it came w/ the Expansion Pak, though).
Paper Mario: TTYD was such a treat & I really wish Nintendo would steer the franchise back on that path.
I would like to add Shadow of the Eternals to the list of games Nintendo should release on Wii U. Plus, a new Sin & Punishment, maybe even Space Firebird (but it’s pre-NES). Localize the Fatal Frames. I also wish Nintendo would collaborate w/ SEGA for new Skies of Arcadia, NiGHTS, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon, & Jet Grind Radio. & it’d be cool if they bought THQ’s Sphinx & the Cursed Mummy IP & made a sequel.
Surprised no one here said it first:
It’s possible that this could very well be a clear indication and nod towards Metroid fans that ‘both’ 2D and 3D Metroid games truly are in the works for the New/Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, respectively.
For the love of God, Nintendo…please announce at least one new Metroid game this year at E3 for the Wii U. We have Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Starfox, Kirby, and Pikmin…now announce the one other very high-performing series you’re forgetting about. If there would be any better time to announce not one, but TWO, Metroid games, it would be at this year’s E3 for Metroid’s upcoming 30th Anniversary next year.
I would literal nerdgasm if they announce 2 Metroid games at E3.
Dude…Nintendo could have the best presentation for two years in a row with E3 2015 if they announce Metroid 5 and the Metroid Prime Trilogy sequel…which I’ll just codename Metroid X. 😃
So much hype…but I should really try my best to keep the hype on the down low until it gets closer to June… lol
I think metroid X is a better suited name for metroid 5 with the whole X problem ;)
Metroid Dread and Metroid Ultra.
Too many Metroid talk around the internet. Is the big N trying to send subliminal messages ???
“Oh yeah this other M metroid figure has nothing to do with the debate.” “Well HE still looks good” -.-
It’s really no contest, it’s impossible to choose between the very highest points of the Metroid franchise, they’re both so good that it’s impossible for one to win over the other, so pretty much, they’re both the best Metroid game.
Really interesting nintendo minute covered metroid stuff…….I wonder if nintendo wanted to gauge interest in metroid….maybe for some e3 metroid news…..
That could be so, I think it’s about time they released a brand new super metroid style game for the 3ds, preferably at the end of this year. And then blow us away with some footage of a new prime game for wii u for 2016. Fingers crossed.
……. and the winner for best Metroid game goes to Super Metroid. And Metroid Prime.
