Rumour: Grand Theft Auto V Was Prototyped For Wii U

We all wanted Grand Theft Auto V on Wii U, but sadly RockStar never delivered. Liam Robertson from Unseen64 says that the company did have a brief prototype up and running for the Wii U but scrapped it in the end. This was possibly due to the small user base that the console had at the time. Details are rather scarce as you would expect, but it’s interesting news none the less.

This was already reported two years ago. They got the thing up and running smooth, or so this b, og reported anyway.

Ah well, we all express endless gratitude. You slave over a hot computer all day to entertain and inform endless trolls and delusional gamers. Its good stuff.

      2. Looking at all the old greats in the comment section made me smile and be sad at the same time.MNN is now full of crazies.

          1. Those were actually expected shipped to stores by the end of 2014. Yes they shipped that many world wide, but they didn’t sell to consumers, its not even close.

          1. No it said shipped, its really not selling as well as they hoped but there is allot of smoke and mirrors from marketing.

    1. And yet when Xbox One version came out, that had lesser install base than Wii U, truer story. Only way for it to surpass Wii U was two price drops within the same year and plenty of BS PR and damage control had to be done to woo more fools to think that over priced fire hazard box is something special. Mean while, Master Chief Collection is showing some promise..oh wait, that got fucked up at launched too.

  2. That’s shameful. I can just imagine using the cell phone mechanics or even the on screen map of GTA V on the gamepad, it would’ve fit very nicely. I felt that GTA V could have done well on the Wii U if the features were executed properly but oh well…….missed opportunity by Rockstar…..smh

      1. Hopefully but would Wii U owners still be interested? Did Rockstar wait too late? I felt if they were going to port it over to the Wii U they should’ve done it when they ported the PS4 and Xbox One versions. The Wii U version I think could’ve done better than those versions because a lot of anticipation and mystery would have been surrounding it

        1. Better than those versions? Don’t be stupid… lol. How did Watchdogs end up doing, btw?

Third party games (and non-Mario/Zelda games) sell like dog shit on WiiU.

          1. That because Watch Dogs was missing features, poorly developed and stealth released. A lot of people didn’t even know it was still in development for the Wii U and tell me was the Wii U version of Watch Dogs released alongside the PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions and heavily advertised like those versions were? Umm…..exactly

              1. It’s a valid excuse my friend. Watchdogs was awfully optimised and it even get released late on wii u. I have wii u but I’ve already played watchdogs on my ps3 and pc but because of my disappointment with watchdogs, I’m not gonna buy it again on my wii u.

        2. “The Wii U version I think could’ve done better than those versions”
LMAO! The PS4 version alone isn’t too far from selling as many copies as there are WiiU owners, what are you even saying?
Also, what mystery? Everyone knows enough about the game, considering it’s been out on four other platforms for 1 1/2 years already.

          1. Little correction there, it’s been out for 1 1/2 years on only two of the platforms, of course. It’s been 5 months for the other two.

          2. Like I said you fake ass Nintendo fan the Wii U version of GTA V would have sold better than the PS4 and the Xbox One versions hadn’t the game been rightfully developed, advertised like those versions were and released alongside those versions dummy. And the ” mystery ” I’m referring to is how well the gamepad intergration would’ve worked with GTA V thus differiating itself from the slightly graphically enhanced last gen consoles versions that are the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Get your brain examined moron

              1. Yes it would’ve pony and btw are you enjoying Bloodbourne……..you know the PS4’s ONLY exclusive that’s actually worth a damn that you Sony clowns had to wait a year and three months on? LMAO

                1. Ok, first of all, I didn’t get a PS4 until earlier this month. So nice going there making yourself look stupid. Second of all, that’s just your irrelevant opinion. But anyways, since you asked so nicely, I’ll answer your question. I do not have Bloodborne. I might get it though.

                  1. Oh, you got a PS4 now? I thought you were going to get an Xbox One. Anyway, welcome to the Playstation family :D

What games do you have so far?

                    1. Well so far: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Grand Theft Auto V, and inFamous Second Son. And if you count digital then I also have The Last of Us Remastered and inFamous First Light. :)

                    2. Nice. Infamous is another series I love. Black Flag is probably my favorite Assassin’s Creed, it’s really fun. Especially hijacking ships and sailing the high seas, you can’t forget those god damn rogue waves either lol.

The Last of Us speaks for itself, a true masterpiece in my opinion. I could say so much about that game but I don’t want to spoil anything for you. All I’ll say is that it is brutal :) I love that game to death though, I can’t wait to see what they do next with it.

Lately I’ve been playing Bloodborne. I also cannot wait for Uncharted 4, it is looking so good.

                  1. Enjoying your “next gen” last gen ports with window dressing polishing? Oh what was that? 90% of those ports are nothing but slightly upscaled and possibly broken-at-launch games? How sad that the next gen is such a lackluster bitch. lol

                    1. I would be thoroughly enjoying Dragon Age: Inquisition, Titanfall, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Forza Horizon 2, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Far Cry 4, Sunset Overdrive, Wolfenstein: The New Order, LittleBigPlanet 3 and inFamous: Second Son if I had an Xbox One or PS4. But anyway, I’m happy with my Wii U. Can’t afford so many consoles!

                      1. Forza Horizon 2! That’s the one XB1 exclusive I wish I could play on PS4! O_O But the rest are still cool though. Lol I just love racing games. I suppose I might take a look at Driveclub then…

                    2. What are you basing those assumptions on? On the fact that barely any 3rd party games manage to sell well on the WiiU?
Also, not even Nintendo themselves bother to make decent use of the gamepad, and you expect 3rd parties to do it? Sure thing hun, lmao.
I really find it fascinating how you seriously seem to believe the nonsense you’re saying, it’s almost cute.

On another note, judging by the way you’re talking and your general behaviour around here, I wouldn’t be surprised if I turned out to have a longer history with Nintendo than you do, so maybe you might not want to assume too much. :)

                      1. ” I wouldn’t be surprised if I turned out to have a longer history with Nintendo than you do, so maybe you might not want to assume too much. :) ”

                        You wanna bet Pretendo fan?

                        1. Why would I want to bet? Unlike you, I’m not going around assuming stuff about people. I merely said it wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out to be that way, I didn’t say it actually is like that.
Fortunately, I’m mature enough to not feel the need to prove a stranger on the internet my support for something being stronger than theirs or anything silly like that. You, on the other hand, haven’t shown much maturity around here at all. That, on the other hand, is very unfortunate.

                  1. I just think the majority of people out there probably own at least two consoles these days. The Wii U is pretty much constantly regarded as a secondary console anyway. I can’t imagine most seeing a reason to buy the Wii U version this far out, when they’ve probably been playing it for a long time now already.

I’m all about supporting the Wii U when I can, but when I’ve already played it on PS3 and PS4. Why would I really want to buy it again on the Wii U? If anything it would be wiser to just buy the PC version.

Even that, I probably won’t buy, even though I really wanted the PC version. Since Rockstar is taking so long with the PC version, I probably won’t have much interest once it does release. I know it will look a thousand times better on my PC, but it isn’t enough for me to buy it again. I’ll just stick with the PS4 version, it is good enough.

Now if it had released earlier on, before the PS4 and Xbox One were out, when it was just on PS3 and Xbox 360. I could have seen it doing better on the Wii U.

I question though, if Nintendo’s internet infrastructure at the moment could handle GTA online. A mess as it is on other consoles to be honest.

What I think would be a really wise business move, is for Nintendo to instead make unique GTA game, that is only on the Wii U. Something like GTA: Chinatown Wars on DS.

                    1. Well the PC version will likely have more favorable perks than consoles like: Dedicated servers, mods, free online play and boundless graphical fidelity.

Wii U will likely handle the game better than my current PS3 version since it keeps fucking freezing on me and now I can’t continue playing due to that. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE GTA5 (probably because of San Andreas) but unless Rockstar fixes that issue for me, I’m gonna have to switch over to PS4 just for that game and hope it runs better or maybe wait for PC.

And online wise, it might have the same number of players, if not, slightly lesser but it’s not based on Nintendo’s online infrastructure because it’s Rockstar’s game and online system that GTA5 runs.

                      1. Well for sure PC version is always better. It’s just that I usually always buy the PC version first, but since they decided to hold out on it so long (which I’m sure was all a plan to get people to buy the same game over and over again.) So I said screw it.

Hmm, I think something might be wrong with your PS3. Do you have a disc version? It could be the disk maybe. Or your PS3 has just run its course, cause I never had this problem when playing it on mine. I gave my PS3 to my siblings once I got a PS4, and they play GTA nonstop just fine, mine is the old phat one also. Although I’ve heard oddly the old phat ones seems to be more reliable than the newer PS3’s, but I wouldn’t know since I never had the newer models.

The best I could suggest is maybe vacuuming the vents on your PS3. Not to say you don’t up keep it but you never know. Not that that will even fix it, just a suggestion. Cause if I had the problem, I would’t mind admitting it. The Last of Us though, that about killed my PS3. Lol, it would freeze during that game sometimes quite often. Although it wasn’t until the PS3 had been running for probably too long that it would start freezing.

I think Nintendo would really score if they invested into a specific version only on the Wii U. That would be the way to do it. It was kind of GTA’s thing anyway, with the PSP versions and so on.

Unfortunately like most developers, it seems Rockstar hasn’t been into that anymore, and their main focus is just money like mostly everyone else these days. I would’ve put my life on it, that the PS Vita would have had it’s own version at some point.. Good thing I didn’t.

Sucks everything has to be extremely profitable these days for people to do anything with it. I think it hurts gaming overall. I understand they need to make money, but does it have to always be a shit ton for them to even consider it.

                        1. My PS3 is the third version (slimmer with a top disc tray slot) and its recently brand new and my copy of GTA5 is clean (no scratches). My guess could be the game but then again, the game is heavy and takes a while to load plus it lags here and there at times.

                          1. PS4 version has a more stable frame rate from what I’ve played. It rarely drops below 30 FPS. But the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have noticeable frame rate issues. And they do take longer to load. I went back and loaded up the PS3 version and it takes foreeeeeever. Lol.

                              1. What exactly is this freezing problem like? Do you mean that it just stops the game completely? Or it pauses a few seconds then resumes? I haven’t noticed anything at all like that. Just frame rate issues.

                              2. Well the longer loading times and lower framerate are to be expected on consoles. As to why it keeps freezing like that, I can only assume it could just be a bad disc, even though it isn’t scratched. If your PS3 isn’t having any other problems with other games, it has to be something related to GTA itself. That seems like a safe assumption.

                            1. It’s not that Rockstar is only into money. They do work their asses off and earn that money without BS or taking shortcuts like many others so. Rockstar is among my top favorite and trusted 3rd party devs. If they were really interested in money, they would’ve made the PC version of GTA5 a long time ago and give Wii U a shot with its simultaneous release with PS3/360 which would’ve helped them break their already broken record even more unreachable so that those fuckers over at the COD section can weep as they watch their so called “dominance” quickly fade away. lol Also if GTA5 came to Wii U the same day with PS3/360 even with its few draw backs (not saying about gimping), it would’ve done both sides a huge favor for two reasons: Rockstar would capitalize more revenues and fan base outreach for GTA5 and restore some faith in maturity on Wii U plus increase their popularity among consumers and designers to port more games to Wii U without any excuses we hear now.

                              1. I agree, not saying they don’t make quality games. I’m just saying they haven’t made any spin offs in a while it seems. I also think if they released the PC version alongside the others, the console versions wouldn’t have sold as well as they did so quickly. No doubt it still would have sold extremely well either way but I know more people would have bought the PC version instead.

As far as what I meant about them being more concerned about making money more money from it this time around. I’m saying they sure got more money from me and plenty of my friends than we ever intended spending. We’ve always played the PC versions. The last time I played GTA on consoles was with GTA III.

I also completely agree in that If they released it the same day on Wii U, as the PS3 and Xbox 360. It would have sold well on the Wii U also. I feel even though Rockstar may not have seen the console as a viable market, Nintendo possibly should have tried helping more, to get the game on the console no matter what. Sometimes I would love to know what goes on behind the scenes, cause if it were me, I would’ve done anything I could to make sure GTA was coming to the Wii U. It’s too big of a series not to be on every damn console, but Nintendo has never put GTA on their consoles, just their handheld. They’ve had other Rockstar games in the past on consoles like Bully. But they can make an effort to get it on something like the DS though, which is so confusing to me.

Exactly. Nintendo touted how they weren’t going to leave mature gamers out so much this time when they announced the Wii U. Them pushing to have GTA on the system earlier on would have been a nice testament to that. Instead we just hear about how Reggie wishes it was on Wii U… Wtf Reggie? You’re the president of the NOA branch and instead of doing your best job to make it happen, you just wish…

Well I can shit in one hand and wish in the other, and see which one fills up faster… -_-

The last thing I wanted to do was get the PS3 version, but I wanted to play it so bad. Then I waited thinking, they’d release it soon but then nothing came until the PS4. So after trying to wait more and more, I finally broke and decided the PS4 version is going to be it for me.

Tired of waiting for the PC version. The PS4 version is fine, it won’t be as good as the PC version obviously, but I’m okay with that. I don’t really use mods that much either, so I can live without those also, and I’ve had PS+ for the PS3 for ages before the PS4 came out. I’ve always intended on keeping my PS+ sub long before the requirement for online multiplayer.

Although yea, again I totally agree with you on that subject. Paying to use your own internet isn’t right coming from Sony or Microsoft. I’ve just always loved what PS+ offers, so even if the PS4 had free online play, I’d still have PS+ anyway.

                          1. But wasn’t Chinatown Wars pretty great? And according to Metacritic it’s the highest rated DS game of all time

              2. 3rd parties will never know how their games will sell on a system if they just abandon it. Wii U’s little success is due to a large part of not just small marketing but also how 3rd parties treat it. Even if a version can’t be as big as others if it is well made then it would sell well, since many 3rd parties left the system and use the old excuse of the system not being strong enough, people believe it’s a bad console when in reality it has produced some of the best games this generation

                  1. Well Bayonetta 1 was never really popular to begin with. Plus Bayonetta 2 sold better than the first game when it released so this game isn’t really a good example of your point. But I understand what you mean

                  2. And what happened with the first game on 65+ million PS3 and 70+ million 360? Oh that’s right, it sold barely 2.5 million IN 2 FREAKING YEARS. As for the sequel, we haven’t heard of its total current day sales numbers yet except it recently (as of mid November) sold around half a million on Wii U alone not to mention its up against November’s killer line up like Smash Bros. 4.

                    1. Lol let’s wait and see if Bayonetta 2 can muster up 2.5 million in 2 years then! No need to rage at me, haha. I’m just saying, in the context of a typical AAA game it failed, especially when considering Smash’s amazing sales! Though it’s sad for both PS3/Xbox 360 Bayonetta 1 and Wii U’s Bayonetta 2, none of those companies really advertised for it…

                1. Third parties have already tried. The games don’t sell well. CoD and AC which are big time sellers still fail on the Wii U. I guarantee you that even if the Wii U version is “well made”, it would be the worst selling version. Nintendo isn’t doing enough to get people to buy their console over the competition. And it’s too late to fix that now. The Wii U is nothing but a Nintendo box at this point.

                  1. Black Ops 2 on Wii U failed because 1. Already sold much on the other two platforms and 2. Many have wondered and asked if Wii U will get the DLC like Nuketown which Activision intentionally kept quiet until 3 months later they said no so the fans felt cheated on Wii U and didn’t buy enough of the games and then Ghosts repeated the same BS but also because Ghosts is the biggest and laziest POS game ever created in the series.

AC3 Wii U came almost 2 months later and fans didn’t like it so it’ll likely not do much at Wii U launch and AC4 Wii U, again, has no DLC so that turned off the fans plus the Wii U Rayman Legends controversy pissed the fans off from even touching another Ubisoft game.

If any port comes late to Wii U being called the “definitive” versions but sells poorly, it’s mainly because they’re 1-2 year old ports that was already purchased/played a long time ago. You also wanna know why the fans ain’t buying their games? Lazy or intentionally gimped ports (Sniper Elite 2) and 3rd party ridiculous/unprofessional comments (like EA’s “Wii U is crap” Twitter post) is what’s turning the fans away. It’s not just marketing fool, 3rd parties played the majority of Wii U’s problems.

                    1. “Black Ops 2 on Wii U failed because 1. Already sold much on the other two platforms”
The game was released only 6 days later on the Wii U. That’s no excuse. As for DLC, I seriously doubt that’s the reason for the poor sales. If the game sold well enough, I’m sure they would’ve included it. AC3 had DLC and nobody cared. So really, what difference would it have even made if they included IV’s? How can you not support the previous game and complain that the next one isn’t getting new content? They could’ve just not brought the game over at all due to poor sales.

                      1. Either you’re completely blind, or you’re incapable of forming a logical thought.

Even just 6 days for a game like COD is a stretch, considering they sell millions in the first day alone. But, the poor sales on Wii U can be blamed even more on the fact that it was a new console, and MOST people already had a ps3 and 360 to play it on. I don’t imagine many people going to pick up a Wii U, and then buying a game they could already play on more established consoles, with no added bonuses besides split screen play on separate screens.

Third parties ported games VERY horribly to Wii U, and a lot of them were considerably old games that majority of people already played if they wanted to. Be sure to keep that in mind.

If you want third parties, you need PC or PS4/Xbone, simple as that. Developers are super lazy when it comes to Nintendo support. I have all the consoles and, right now, third parties are sucking dick anyway. So who really gives a shit until something worthwhile lands that isn’t a goddam port of a game I already own from last gen. Dragon Age was the closest it has gotten so far, but I have many problems with that game as well. Haven’t tried Bloodborne yet. Waiting until the loading screen patch comes out.

              3. So if I’m getting this right, this is an anonymous source getting information from an anonymous source about a GTA V prototype for the WiiU? Sounds reliable, lmao.

                1. It’s a sandbox game for the most part – I think it’s popularity lies in the fact that you can do things you could (Realistically) never do otherwise, like rob banks.

On that same note, I’m not a fan either.

              4. Eh. It’s already available on every other console (and PC soon) in the industry this generation and the last, so porting it now would only appeal to that small awkward strictly Nintendo-only group.

And let’s face it, the vast majority of gamers own a Wii U or want a Wii U has a companion console simply because of Nintendo’s countless exclusives. Even most “PC Master Race” people at least want or have a Wii U.

                1. I don’t have or want a WiiU. Nintendo’s exclusives (good ones) are hardly plentiful nowadays, so i just stick with the handhelds for that secondary content.

              5. @Namie Personally I think the GamePad is useful for minimizing minor multi-tasking and such so I don’t disagree how it can *slightly* improve the experience but I certainly wouldn’t call it the best version and certainly wouldn’t be the most graphical to date however I think it could’ve benefited through the use of the GamePad.

                Don’t attack me, challenge me!

              6. No doubt Reggie was the one who made the demo happen, but ultimately it fell through. Sad too, because if the Wii U got the game, it would have made it’s image look MUCH better towards other 3rd party companies who may have been on the fence of working with the Wii U.

                Oh well.

              7. I would rather love to see this port happen on Wii U. Hopefully they’ll get this version running better than my PS3 one since it’s constantly fucking freezing on me and its pissing me off. I love the game but Jesus Christ, it’s almost unplayable on PS3 at this point. Now I’m considering a PS4 just to play GTA5.

                1. GTA V for PS3 has never froze on me before. That might be an issue with your system. And to be honest, the only thing I ever play is GTA V Online. It’s just too addictive. It’s preventing me from completing my other games…

                  1. GTA is an addicting game in general. I’ve loved it since the beginning, some entries worse than others, but the game has always been super fun to me no matter what. I don’t even want to know the amount of time in my life that I’ve put into the series. lol.

I love the weird shit you can witness the people doing in the game, it’s so amusing, and so lively. Especially in GTA V. It is very rare that a game can make me laugh so hard.

                    1. I would hope you can form your own opinion about the games online. Not to say you brother isn’t a trustworthy person or has his reasons, but I don’t let people form my opinion to that extent. I may take their suggestions to heart, but ultimately I’ll decide if I like it or not.

Online is pretty broken at times, I won’t sugar coat it. When it works though, it’s a blast.

Just my opinion. Some people just prefer the single player component more. I love both.

                1. They didn’t say no, Reggie has said in the past he wished GTA was on the Wii U. I just don’t think they put much effort into making it a reality, other than wishing. -_-
