layton_7_small

In news which will disappoint many, Level 5 has announced that Professor Layton 7 and Fantasy Life 2 are both for smartphones. Both series have appeared on the Nintendo 3DS, but Level 5 seems to be shifting away from the platforms with its popular IP. Fantasy Life 2 is a village building simulation and Professor Layton 7 is a card game which includes fortune telling,

  1. I can already imagine Nintendo’s brand of mobile games being this bad. Then again, I wouldn’t cll any mobile exclusive game good to begin with.

  2. Mobile gaming is huge, so I understand. Still, it would be great if these two fine IPs came on the 3DS.

    I hope FL2 isn’t a f2p fest.

  3. Fantasy Life 2 is a village building simulator? WTF. That has f2p written all over it, something like Clash of Clans. That’s pisses me off, considering that fantasy life is one of my favorite 3ds games at the moment. And now Layton is a card game?!?! F2p written all over that too. To say the least I am pissed off at Level 5. On the bright side, Yokai-Watch is coming to US so at least I won’t completely write off Level 5 for the time being.

I mean, I’m kind of relieved it’s only a card game, so the IP isn’t totally ruined. But the fact that they’re calling it Layton “7” irks me.

I really loved the Layton series…

    1. Just hearing that makes it sound so hollow.

Why is it even worthy of that pedigree title, when Professor Layton (as far as I’m aware of) isn’t in the game?

What happens to these companies when the smart device bubble bursts? Only asking this simple question because that day is coming. Smart device gamers are fickle.

    F=ma.

    1. Agreed. The people who play games on their mobile devices are not dedicated, and it’ll die down soon enough. I mean, eventually, probably not now, but eventually.

  5. Who cares? Layton 7 is not even a real Layton game. It’s just some shovelware riding on brand recognition.

  6. This is disappointing news. They should’ve just stuck to using brand new IPs, like Layton Brothers,, for mobile devices. Now there’s a huge quality shift.

  7. Well way too go and almost kill fantasy life IP, seriosly what was wrong with keep it a RPG like it was it’s still one of my favorite games, level 5 need to re-think this

  8. The Layton game is a card-based game, which sounds different from what the Professor Layton games on 3DS were. Fantasy Life might be a dumbed down version of the original game, it sounds more like the village building games where you build, wait, build, wait. I don’t think it’s an end to the series on 3DS, just a different version (similar to how Harvest Moon and Hometown Story have mobile games).

  9. Disappointing to say the least…. I am a fan of both the original FL, as well as the PL series in general… I pretty much hate smart phone games.

  10. From someone whose a big Fantasy Life fan, the prospect of Fantasy Life 2 being on smart phone is disappointing. I’ll be skipping it unless there is a 3DS version.

  11. It hurts to see Layton becomming a mobile card game and Fantasy Life a mobile village building simulation. I thought FL was a great mix of action, RPC and Animal Crossing. That thing they call FL2, does not deserve that name.
Don’t even let me begin on Layton…

  12. sounds like these games are not true successors of the IPs. so there is hope to still get real successors for the 3DS. If not, then I will have to do with replaying the old ones.

  14. Those are sequels? Fantasy Life should lose the 2 considering that it’s not a direct follow up. And Layton 7? All Layton games are not card games so why make it 7? Why not call it Layton Mobile. Japan really is bad with titles.

Well, as these are mobile titles, I still hope for the real Fantasy Life 2 that plays like the original. And Prof. Layton and the Mystery of “something” as a follow up to the series (as the series is not really numbered).

  15. I think Fantasy Life was a missed opportunity honestly. It was an ok game, but it had alot of missed potential. I still enjoyed it though, and put over thirty hours on it.

I honestly thought they would improve on Fantasy Life with the sequel. But instead of improving they actually downgrade? To Mobile?

Well, bye bye Fantasy Life. It was nice knowing ya.

Potentially ignorant question but…could Nintendo just buy the IPs? Because that would be great.

  19. I dont care what you put on mobile Ninty, just give me Fantasy Life 2 on my 3ds (whenever) I dont care if its a year or two from now. A REAL fantasy life, not a port of that Mobile crap that youre calling Fantasy Life 2.

  20. Didn’t we already know Layton 7 was coming to iOS? Likewise weren’t we already aware Professor Layton 6 was the last game with Hershel as the protagonist and the last to go by the formula set by the previous trilogies? I don’t play Fantasy Life so I can’t comment on that but as a Layton fan, I feel adequately prepared for this news.

  21. Are we talking true sequels of the games, or just spin-offs? ‘Cause I suppose it’d make more sense if it were the latter.
