Video: FExSMT Wii U’s Kiria Gets More Respectable Outfit For Japanese Release

NeoGAF member Rhandino discovered that Kiria from the Wii U’s Shin Megami Tensei / Fire Emblem mashup has had one of her costumes altered. While this isn’t unusual for the western release of a game it is slightly unusual for the Japanese release to be censored. Do you think it was a good idea for Nintendo to change her outfit ahead of the game’s release?

    1. Apologies for any confusion! I’ve decided to change the title to what it should have been which is FExSMT. I was just playing around with the headline and published it as it was.

    1. Yeah, because the human body is disgusting and must be hidden away to protect our children.
      The view that sex, an activity that not only provides pleasure but is absolutely vital for the continuation of our species, is somehow abhorrent to many, while violence and death is greatly enjoyed by the masses is a view I will never understand.
      Not only that, but this is entirely fictional. People really need stop getting their panties in a bunch and cut out the hypocrisy and double standards already.

      1. I think this is less of an issue than the perception that sex is disgusting, but rather the protrayal of the character. Within an entertainment powerhouses like Nintendo and Sega, companies that try to reflect a wide demographic’s best interest at heart, they are not in any position to lead the charge and be risque. Kiria wearing exposed panties doesn’t benefit the character or the market; if anything it narrows the potential demographic. Her wearing pants couldn’t possibly alient anyone away from the game because it is part of the norm to wear them and it isn’t degrading to Kiria.

        With pants, players can associate the character more with her skills and personality rather than as a sex symbol. There’s more to the character than that, so I personally think it was a positive change.

        Aesthetically, I think the she just looks better with pants anyways.

        1. This was the best way to explain it.

          Like, how can you take fighting demon gods seriously when you’re in panties and your breasts flopping around everywhere? It just looks ridiculous.

        2. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

          Bullshit! Disney is just like Nintendo with focusing on a wide demographic yet they are also doing stuff that targets a certain demographic. Nintendo are just assholes trying to control their consumers.

      1. Yeah. The underlying implication in that word says that an outfit like that is not respectable and, by extension, it means that the person that’s wearing it deserves no respect. I’m sure it wasn’t written with thst intent in mind, but some words carry connotations that we just absorb subconsciously.

  1. “Do you think it was a good idea for Nintendo to change her outfit ahead of the game’s release?”
    That depends entirely on their motivation for doing so. If they simply felt like they were improving the outfit then that’s one thing, but I’d hazard a guess that it was a decision that can once again be attributed to censorship.

  2. The original costume felt pretty fitting for a cross between FE and SMT. I dunno. Both have had pretty sexual costumes in the past, and continue to do so in their upcoming installations, so this just seems like an overall odd choice. But maybe there is a possibility that they wanted the gamers in all regions to be equal so they applied the intended Western censorship to all versions to balance it out and calm down the whiny westerners…..little did they know this will probably bring about an even larger amount of whining from everywhere that isn’t the west lol

  3. To be honest, this looks so much better than the original design. It actually makes Kiria seem a bit more cooler and very sharp (No pun intended given the game’s subtitle).

  4. These types of costumes should be stopped these type stuff happen in Japanese games they love their women to look at that’s why most percentage kids are already turning bad and these kind of material should not be in games it’s bad to show women’s in this kind of nature that includes games like Dead or Alive this game has no respect for women, how can they release this kind of material to the public there are crazy developers out there, i think this kind of stuff should be banned and the games should not be released.

  5. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

    ……………. That’s nice. I guess she is a whore that doesn’t deserve respect if she doesn’t have pants on, right? Word stuff better, guys, because the current wording just makes it worse.

  6. The problem for me is that when female characters are designed in this way, it’s usually the intention of the producers to make them sexy for marketing purpose. I can understand a handful of female characters can dress in revealing clothing as part of their integral character trait, but sometimes in Japanese games it goes way too far and is blatant.

    In games which involve fighting or where the characters require a certain amount of dignity, I don’t really take anyone in their underwear seriously when their design’s purpose is to be sexually appealing.
