Nintendo Hardware Sales: Wii U Is At 12.6 Million And Nintendo 3DS Is At 57.94 Million

As you have probably seen from the previous posts, Nintendo has released its third quarter 2016 financial results. While it may have missed analysts and investors expectations, the Kyoto based company has released worldwide hardware figures for both of its current devices. The Nintendo 3DS has sold a total of 57.94 million units to date and software sales are at 264.53 million units. Of course, the Wii U hasn’t done quite as well but it has managed to sell 12.6 million units of hardware and 79.3 million units of software to date.

In the last three months of 2015, Nintendo sold 1.87 million Wii U consoles and 3.6 million 3DS units.

The 3DS sold 5.9 million units of hardware and 38 million units of software in the past nine months. 3DS hardware sales have topped 57.94 million units to date, while software unit sales are at 264.53 million units. The top seller in the past nine months on the 3DS was Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, which has sold more than 2.9 million units

In the last nine months, the Wii U console sold just 3 million units of hardware and 22 million units of software. The Wii U video game console sold 12.6 million units of hardware and 79.3 million units of software to date. The top seller in the past nine months on the Wii U is Splatoon, which has sold 4 million units. By comparison, Sony has sold an estimated 36 million units to date of its PlayStation 4 console, and Microsoft has sold an estimated 19 million Xbox One consoles.

  1. While the Wii U hasn’t done too well, almost 2 million consoles sold in three months isn’t that bad! Let’s hope Nintendo does better with their next generation.

  2. The Wii U had another average year. It has sold 3 million consoles a year since release, so this year is no different. What is impressive is the 3ds selling 6 million units in 9 months. That’s pretty amazing, and makes you wonder if it could continue those sales next year. I honestly believe the NX will replace the 3ds, … so we will never probably know. I was really hoping to see the 3ds reach 70-80 million in sales.. oh well, it had a good run.

  3. That estimate for XB1 is generous from what I’ve seen. Depending on the release of the NX, it could destroy XB1 sales and thus leaving Sony and Nintendo to dominate the market for some time. And I’m not referring to console wars, but rather that the gaming market stays profitable and can continue for the foreseeable future.

  4. Not likely. Given the small amount of games being released for the console, and the rumored release of the NX (at least, the supposed handheld aspect of it) by the end of the year, it’ll siphon sales from the dying console. Zelda won’t be able to help much either, since when (not if) it’s going to be released on the NX, people will just wait to purchase it for the newer console.

    12.6m Wii U consoles sold in only 3 years & 2 months………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

I now realize 13-14 million sold was also way too generous a number. I should have predicted it would sell 12m so I can be happy & surprised it sold 600k more than what I predicted.

Even Xbone is kicking Wii U’s ass. Phil Spencer helped that console do a complete 180 from being everything the fans & consumers didn’t want to something that has made them happy. Wish I could say the same for Nintendo & the Wii U. It may have a few good gems but the Gamecube makes the Wii U look like the Sega Dreamcast and the N64 makes the Wii U look like the Virtual Boy. Maybe the NX will be everything we want & more. Only time will tell.

I’m looking closely at Nintendo Account. If it’s not as good, if not better, than PlayStation’s account system is when you have PlayStation Plus activated that comes with exclusive deals on digital games, cloud storage for save data, & better online servers for multiplayer games, my hopes for the NX will be diminished.
