Nintendo Has Taken Down The Super Mario Bros Z Patreon

The Patreon page for Alvin-Earthworm’s Super Mario Bros. Z project was taken down by Nintendo following a DMCA notice. The Patreon had received a hefty sum of money from fans, with the total reaching many thousands of dollars. If you visited the page, you would be greeted with this:

smbz_patreon_noticeAlvin has now created a new page, which has reached $1,500 in less than a day. If this page is also taken down, Alvin has a plan. He mentioned on Twitter that he will just find an alternative funding site. As for the animation itself, it will continue. The next episode has begun production and is planned for a release in the next few months. Super Mario Bros. Z will be 10 years old on April 22nd.

  1. All he needs do is make a new patreon under a new name as a studio, leave out the details of what he’s funding, and then try again – fans would know, Nintendo wouldn’t get wind of it easily and everyones a winner.

Realistically you can’t expect to play for money with another company brand without being a little inventive how you do it – LITERALLY advertising what he was doing first and foremost was making this a target…he needs to make a studio name and make the patreon for that, rather than be this direct about the project.

      1. “impressive and influential ”

It’s literally just Dragon Ball Z will Mario and Sonic characters. Only middle schoolers like this.

        1. Actually the original was but even that had some unique things, the reboot is much more unique and doesn’t rely on DBZ fighting but actually goes for more Smash Bros style for like a good 85% of the fighting in the first episode.

  2. Challenging Nintendo’s lawyers, he must be really brave or, actually there’s no or, thats just plain stupidity of the highest tier. Have fun being Reggie’s pockets deep in debt.

  5. He is still using someone else’s IP to earn money… I mean, if this was any good, he could make his own series and character and get fan’s support. I didn’t like this series at all, can’t understand why someone would, but I digress.

    1. The whole point of the series is how it uses eastablished lore of the mario and sonic franchises and creates an anime story based around it, changing out the characters would remove the strengths of it. He also has plenty of legal grounds to be payed for his work, as it is covered by the same laws that allows abridged series to make profit. He’s also not being paid directly for the series, but for the development process. He’s not just taking gameplay footage and dubbing over it, he’s creating everything from the ground up and while the characters and assets are indeed properties of sega and nintendo, there is alot of work put into the series that allows it to qualify as a work of his own. Nintendo may have the right to attempt legal action, but they have nothing to gain from it, because as long as the laws of fair use remain unchaged, all they’re doing is making things difficult for their own fans.
