Zelda Wii U: Aonuma Hopes To Make Something New Like Ocarina Of Time Was

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed in the latest edition of Japanese publication Famitsu that he hopes to create an experience with Zelda Wii U that feels as new as things did when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released back in 1998.

“When we did Skyward Sword for the Wii, at the end stages of development, I was in charge of the characters’ dialogue and the in-game text. And, now as well, it’s like it was then. I had to work on text today, too,” he said with a laugh.

“But, the game has really taken shape, and things have gotten easier. That means things are progressing well.”

“I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavor will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised.”

“Please look forward to it, because I think we’ll be able to make ‘something new’ like Ocarina of Time was,” Aonuma added.

  1. Sounds like he is trying to make the game “more western” in terms of being, not sure if action based is the right term, but more uptempo perhaps… He said so much in not having the slow build up that most Zelda games have… The only question now is when (although either a September or November release seems about as good a guess as any with the E3 reveal)

      1. you say that, but nintendo often drops games in early september, even ones that will sell a bunch. I think both are possible, but there could be a bundle on Black Friday… I really think it has a lot to do with whatever the NX timeline is… and whatever the hell it is. Like if it is at first a portable that WiiU backwards compatible, making Zelda U playable on a handheld, then it changes much. While that may seem unrealistic, I really have no idea what that system or platform will be like except for swirling rumors, unconnected patents and a lot of hearsay

      1. Yeah, and I can’t wait to see how they implement Open world. I’m ok if it’s not true open world like X, OoT was open-world enough for me, for a Zelda game.
I hope it comes out this year!

        1. It’ll be coming this year as it was confirmed by Reggie months ago but I really think I may opt to go with the NX version (if the rumors are true) since it will be the definitive version but since I’m a Nintendo fanboy I may get both the Wii U and NX versions lol

          1. Ha. Well, I’m NOT getting the NX version as I’m not getting an NX for a couple years (whatever it turns out to be) – Just the WiiU version for me! I can’t throw stones surrounding buying the game twice though. I’ve bought every Zelda title … Hell, I’ve lost count how many times!

  3. That food metaphor better not mean he wants to make it more like western games. Ive had enough of western game bullshit. The last Japanese game that went for the western open world style that Zelda seems like its trying to do, MGSV, was a pile of crap. I’ll remain skeptical untill we see more of the game

  4. oh no no no, don’t westernise Zelda. I know Zelda has always been more popular in the west but on that case Zelda need to stay eastern heavily influence. Saying that Zelda will be more skyrim than Zelda (hence the western reference)

      1. hahaha. Yeah, given everything else where they’ve delayed this game, the fact that the Wii U is dying, the NX is most likely coming this year – I’m totally grasping at straws when I merely add to the list of reasons why it’ll be on the NX. I can’t wait for Nintendo to finally announce it officially so I can tell all you naive fanboys just how blind you were.

          1. If Nintendo makes the absurd and utterly idiotic decision not to release the game on the NX (which they won’t), then I will certainly admit to my incorrect assessment.

          1. I personally don’t discount the possibility of a dual release. But there is NO way they would skip a WiiU version all-together. Seriously, I really can’t believe that’s even possible.

            1. If they do drop the Wii U version altogether & only put it on NX, I hope everyone gives Nintendo so much fucking hell for it. Sadly, there are still going to be those few that will still defend Nintendo because they aren’t fans at all but merely corporate slaves to their corporate masters. Oh well…

              1. Yeah, and I’ve got to believe even a good number of new Nintendo loyalists will revolt if they get fucked out of Zelda U. I really, really can’t believe Nintendo would do it.

                1. I can’t believe they would either which is why I can actually see them doing it. I mean, it would be very innovative for Nintendo to screw people out of a big name game after they promised the Wii U was still going to get it. … See what I did there?

  5. Just give me some concrete info dang it! A name! A basic plot! Hell even one screenshot of a new area or dungeon would be good! Give me news! Im impatient and cant wait for E3!

    1. I love the idea of try something new, and a more western rpg oriented game, but with the japanese sense of design, is just what I want *__* …come on Aonuma, bring the new stuff, stop talking, we want to see gameplay : 3

-||The only thing I want are difficult bosses, I can’t stand those walk-overs||-

        1. Yeah, I want a more hard game overall, like a game that make me feel rewarded for finding a piece of heart or a power up, you know… because I actually need them and not just for show how long my health bar is… and maybe bosses that try to hit me for real xD (ALbW wasn’t that bad in that regard, they can built from there) : )

            1. Lol!! I can tell by the movies you use we’re probably close to the same age, and definitly favor similar pop culture genres.

    2. He also did Majora’s Mask which was amazing IMO. He’s put out at least as many good Zeldas as not-so-good ones, and lots of people don’t even have problems with TP and SS. I think he knows what he’s doing.

      1. Oh god no. In my opinion Majora’s Mask is the Starfox Command of the Zelda series. We don’t talk about it cause it was so fucking awful it’s a joke.

        1. Did this kid just compare Majora’s Mask to Star Fox Command? *bursts out laughing* The only joke is that comparison. But whatever. Like you said, it’s your opinion.

        2. A lot of people do talk about it. It’s pretty damn good. I’m sorry you don’t like it, but that’s kind of your misfortune; it doesn’t reflect badly on the game, which has actually received pretty universal praise, both at its launch and in the years since.

  7. Ocarina of Time was not that revolutionary. I have no idea what he’s trying to say, but if they fucked up and mad Zelda Federation Force starring Linkle I’ll be very disappointed.

      1. Don’t forget it was one of the games that made auto-lock on & targeting a major thing for video games.

    1. OoT was/is a HUGE influence for Zelda and just 3D games in general. How can you say the first 3D Zelda game wasn’t revolutionary to the series! Like Aonuma said OoT became the foundation that all 3D Zelda’s have been based on so far!

          1. Get three RBG thingies, then solve another seven (they were seven, right?) dungeons to rescue these seven people that have been kidnapped by Ganon while you transverse between worlds/time.

To be fair, ALttP is the title that created the modern blueprint of Zelda games, especially regarding pacing.

            1. In that way I guess, but OoT had a completely different play style. The way you fight, figure out puzzles, camera controls, Z-targeting, the way dungeons are laid out, heck, even just the way you move around the environment were all pioneered by OoT.

          2. In this instance, he’s not speaking in terms of the game’s story but gameplay & plot. Plot & story aren’t always mutually exclusive.

        1. Which is wrong. Most of the time, revolutionary is taking an old idea & improving on it while also making it the norm for future stuff.

  8. According to the logic of others that this game having gameplay mechanics from Twilight Princess means it’s a sequel to that game, Ocarina of Time sequel confirmed! lol Joking aside, this makes me more excited about Zelda for Wii U. Must… keep… hype… to a minimum..! *right eye twitch*

  9. A Link Between Worlds showed me that Nintendo knows how modernize Zelda without ruining it. That, coupled with the fact that we know it’s going to be a 3D, openworld, console-worthy Zelda, make me confident that this will be a great game. I just hope that, if they do release it on NX along with WiiU, they still make the WiiU version as good a game as it possibly can be, so that us loyal WiiU-owning fans don’t get the shaft.

    1. Same here. If they manage to preserve the non-linearity of ALBW, we could have the true Zelda 1 successor in our hands.

My only fear would be to get a barren open-world, as it often happens with games that opt for that. I think I’ve only enjoyed a mostly barren open-world in New Vegas, since it, you know, actually makes some sense.

      1. Agreed. I hope they took a page out of X – it’s HUGH, but never do you say, “Why the fuck is all this empty space here?” – I really Hope X put some pressure on them to build a quality, open world…world. ;D

            1. Careful you don’t get addicted & stop playing those altogether because you are to immersed in The Witcher’s world to give a fair share of time to all three games. I was playing a little bit of each of the 5-10 games I haven’t beaten yet on my PS4 but The Witcher 3 became too addicting. Now I’m just playing it til I beat it while the other games sit on the back burner. I’ve barely touched Project X Zone 2 & haven’t even actually played the Bravely Default demo yet because of it. Even poor Grand Theft Auto V hasn’t been opened yet & I got that game on March 1st! lol

              1. I know… I have little time for gaming… I used to have much more but now, between X and FE fates… And the prospect of another Etrain odyssey… ( and GTA and BO3 with my family..) witcher 3 could through a real monkey-wrench into my schedule!

  10. “he hopes to create an experience with Zelda Wii U that feels as new as things did when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released back in 1998”

Wow! He’s got his work cut out for him. Ocarina Of Time was a masterpiece! It will be extremely hard to top that game, or to even make another that’s just as good.
