Nintendo Releases Statement Regarding Bravely Second Sidequest Changes

Nintendo has explained why we have been subjected to some changes in the western version of Bravely Second: End Layer in comparison to the Japanese version. One of the changes mentioned is regarding the side quests which only trigger “good” endings to optional side quests. The publisher says that their aim was ultimately to improve the overall “game experience” and avoid “undue regret” when all it has really done is created controversy on the internet. Here’s what the team over at Nintendo had to say.

Regarding changes made to Bravely Second: End Layer for worldwide release

Based on feedback received after Bravely Second: End Layer’s release in Japan, the development team at Square Enix, in conjunction with Silicon Studio, decided to implement a number of revisions to the game for the purpose of improving its quality and creating a more enjoyable product.

One such change affects the game’s optional side quests, where players encounter a conflict between two opposing parties and choose which party to side with.

When the game was released in Japan, each side quest would end with the team lamenting the decision they made, regardless of the player’s decision. This was intended to help players empathise with the characters’ situation, but overwhelming feedback from players indicated that they felt an unsatisfying disconnect between their intentions and the characters’ reactions. In response, these side quest endings were amended to show the party readily coming to terms with their actions in a manner that does not cause the player undue regret for their decisions.

These changes do not affect the gameplay or the course of events in the game, and were made with the intention of improving the game experience for players.

  1. So before people say that Nintendo changed the way the game was made,…

… just remember that Square Enix was the one who made Nintendo change the content instead.

But yeah: here comes the “Nintendo is censoring the game! Die Nintendo! DIE DIE DIE!!!” people (among the ones who think I’m a horrible person).

        1. I see the events of Triforce Heroes being the reason why Hyrule is falling apart in the Hero Fails Timeline, so I give that game a pass now. Thanks a lot, Hytopia’s fucking spoiled princess & your obsession with getting your outfits back by making the Hero of Hyrule find it for you instead of calling the god damn police! I hope Hytopia gets hit by a meteorite in a future Zelda game.

      1. I’m the person who believes in “don’t knock it until you try it”. I haven’t tried it, so therefore, I won’t hate on it. That’s for Federation Force.

As for amiibo Festival, I haven’t played it but I refuse to buy it due to the fact that there’s no downloadable version (I will buy the appropriate amiibo, though (I enjoy Animal Crossing in general. Like, a lot).

Also, wasting your time targeting me because I might have a different opinion is truly unnecessary. So put the canons down and target somewhere more important: the competition. (I’m not insulting you and if it felt like one, I apologize; I’m not a hating kind of dude. Ninjas (and Canadians for that matter) don’t hate.)

    1. According to what I have heard (from people who have played both the Japanese and Western version), the quest offered two option to choose from. While option A lead to a “good” ending, choosing option B caused the death of people involved – in the Japanese version, that is. In the Western version, neither of the options leads up to anyone dying, you just get the same ending for the quest no matter what you chose. So apparently, death was too inappropiate for the Western audience, it seems.

That’s what I’ve heard and seen in videos, at least.

      1. This article gives the impression the Japanese version had it to where regardless of your decision that the ending to the quest is bad whereas the Western version makes it to where one decision leads to a happy ending while the other leads to a sad ending. If that’s actually the opposite & they changed it to where regardless of your decision, the ending is always good, fuck, fuck, fuck! Ugh! Good thing Nintendo didn’t get to publish The Witcher 3 for Wii U because they’d fuck that game all to hell since certain quests can end very, very badly for one or more people involved.

  2. Such hullabaloo for what amounts to a worthwhile change. Most of the time I find myself choosing the asterisk I’d like over the side quest ending I’d prefer anyway. I was honestly embarrassed by the vitriol being aimed towards Nintendo, and the gamers who were sympathetic with the changes, from certain pockets of the community. Here’s hoping it doesn’t put SE/Nintendo off localising more games.

  3. Wait. Did they change it to where no matter your decision, the ending is always the same happy ending or did they change it to where one choice leads to a happy ending while the other leads to a bad ending? If it’s the former, fuck whoever decided the change right in the ass with a dildo laced with barb wire! It’s a game rated T for Teen! They can handle bad endings! Oh my god! Please don’t let Nintendo, Square Enix, or whoever ever, ever, ever make a Witcher 3 movie or a movie based on a Stephen King book where the hero dies! Otherwise, they’ll want to give it a fairy tale ending where only the bad guy dies & everyone else lives happily ever after! Bleh!

    1. Bravely Default had entire worlds getting destroyed, for fuck sakes!

Imagine how different this scene would have been if someone thought it was too gruesome for adults to watch so they changed it.

        1. Why would Nintendo make a Witcher 3 movie? wtf are you talking about? They also have nothing to do with the Silent Hill series. Do you understand that Nintendo targets a completely different demographic? Please don’t make so much noise when you have little to no understanding of the subject. If you actually read the article it isn’t a change that’s been made because people “can’t handle” bad endings. Try reading again, slowly now.

In plain terms, the Japanese gamers thought the endings to the sidequests sucked, and didn’t match what they had intended to happen when making their choices, so SE/Nintendo took the editorial decision to alter that for the western release.

For someone who talks about others being too sensitive, you sure are crying pretty hard. Are you sure you’re actually old enough to be playing a game rated T in the first place?

          1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss2hULhXf04

My point flew right over your head, huh? Silly Nintendo white knight. If this was done because the Japanese gamers were upset, why did the western version get changed when we aren’t the ones complaining about it? Why isn’t this a patch for the Japanese version instead of a change to the western release? Simple, really. Nintendo is full of shit. They are counting on people like you not being able to read Japanese & go to Japan’s Miiverse & actually read what the Japanese gamers REALLY think. But I guess you buy everything Nintendo says at face value, huh? Probably believed Reggie when he said there wouldn’t be any game droughts in 2015. lol It’s good you are buying it, though. Nintendo needs more suckers since some of their more smart fans are having enough of their bullshit & have left or are leaving.

          2. Maybe if you didn’t have your head up Nintendo’s ass, or their dick in your mouth (whichever fits best for you), you would have been able to actually read my comment & see my point instead of it flying right over your precious little head.

Different demographic? lmfao Like I haven’t heard that damage control before! It’s a game rated T for Teen! Games with that rating are targeting a specific demographic that is no different from any other T for Teen rated game. Try again, please.

      1. Read it again. And this time, use some reading comprehension cuz clearly my point flew right over your head, too.
