Nintendo president, Tatsumi Kimishima, has once again mentioned that the forthcoming Nintendo NX won’t be the successor to the Wii U nor the Nintendo 3DS, but will instead invite players to embark on a new way of playing video games.
“It’s a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don’t feel it’s a pure replacement for the Wii U.”

He doesn’t mean to say it will be a console that will live side by side the Wii U, there is simply no place in the market for 2 Nintendo consoles… He just means to say that it’s not just a Wii U 2.0 but that it can actually do stuff Wii U couldn’t do.
Specially because Wii U software development is 6-feet under for quite some time already.

This scares me most about the NX. I want so much for it to be a great system that will succeed, but, quite frankly, I don’t want a new way to play games. I like playing games just fine as they are.
If sony or Microsoft said PS4 and Xbox One is a new way to play your games would you be scared for them as well. All new consoles are a new way to play your games. If people stop trying to find meaning in everything a person in the business says then information would probably come out more.
It’s not just the words alone, it’s their past decisions that make you scared to hear this from Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft don’t come up with gimmicks like Nintendo does. I love Nintendo, but some of the gimmicks I don’t like. I’m not doing anything to “try” to find meaning in what they say. They are saying something packed with meaning. And a statement like that from Nintendo can usually be taken as indication of something radical. I just pray I’m wrong. As far as VR goes, it “was” a fad that died 20 years ago. It has only been revived recently and is as yet proven that it can remain this time. I hope the NX controller isn’t as crazy as the Wii remote was. I’ll never forget how the world (including myself) reacted and felt when Nintendo revealed the Wii remote and nunchuck for the first time. Sure, everyone bought the Wii like hotcakes due to that gimmicky controller. But it was that very controller that caused a lot of games to be destroyed (fighting games for one), and some third party companies to abandon the console. I want the NX to be a console that all third party companies love developing for.
Wii mote didn’t stop scarface and godfather or even obscure from coming to the wii. There were a lot of 3rd party games on the wii. Did they sell well, I don’t know because I don’t have the official numbers or have what they were expecting the games to sell.

I am replying from my 7″ Galaxy Tab 4 right now, and no comment replies are nested at all. It is impossible to tell where comment chains begin or end. Nothing has a ‘reply to […]’ tag on it either to show they are linked either. It’s annoying.

This doesn’t really rest my fears of what I think is going to end up happening. It sounds like someone feels the need to once again revolutionize the way a person plays a game. Which, honestly I’m beyond sick of. The whole earth is going through this horrible era of unnecessary change.
Without change we may still be playing with Atari ‘ s joystick or colecovision’s control method or just with a mouse and keyboard. Unnecessary or necessary is an opinion. Wii mote revived my interest in gaming. I started feeling like I been playing this way since the NES. More buttons and in 3D but it is still the same way I had been playing. Gamepad is same feeling of been playing thus way since NES but the screen helped me to play more than I would have. I wish sony and Microsoft would do it too. I would have bought their consoles day 1.
To much change though sometimes turns people off from a product that can be better, while also offering a secondary play method (Wii-mote, gamepad ). The whole idea of these controllers are forced to help sell the idea of this new revolutionary machine. Of course it’s innovative and new and exciting, but it doesn’t mean that every console needs that to be successful though. That’s just my take on it. I feel Nintendo has done plenty in the reinventing of how we can control their characters, to me that should be the last thing they worry about.
If it wasn’t for Nintendo’s ideas. I would be strictly PC gamer or not gaming at all. I welcome change. It just depend on the stage of life you end whether it is good or bad.

There was so much potential for it but ppl just weren’t interested. The wii mote however I don’t see as a gimmick because they used it extensively and in very creative ways. I think a lot of people on here are confusing the term “successor” with “replacement”. The NX is going to replace the Wii U as Nintendo’s home console. That much is clear. What I think he is trying to say is that it won’t be a spiritual successor, like the U was to the Wii.
It’s kinda like the ds and gameboy lines. I honestly don’t remember what wording was used when the ds came out, but the ds wasn’t really a successor to the gba as much as it was a replacement. The ds and the gba were radically different where as the gba was more of an upgraded gbc.
I, personally, am hoping that’s what he’s trying to say. But the fact they are throwing the term successor around is confusing some people. Although, it wouldn’t be the first time someone at Nintendo used the wrong term to describe what the hell they are doing. Like saying it’s localization when, in reality, it’s censorship. I wonder if what he actually means is that there will be no direct backwards compatability with either .. as in, you can not put a WiiU disk or a 3DS gamecard into the NX and play it.
We know for a fact that Zelda is playable with whatever it’s control scheme is, and Splatoon and Smash are almost certainly getting ports … so whatever it’s new hook is, it will still be familiar enough to play familiar games.
