WSJ Reporter Says Standard Capacity Of Nintendo Switch Game Card Is Around 16GB

Wall Street Journal technology reporter Takashi Mochizuki is reporting that the standard capacity of a Nintendo Switch video game card is around 16GB. To put this in perspective it is enough for a one layer Blu-Ray game. Video game card capacity could change further on in the generation once games become more advanced.

    1. Why exactly is this bad? No one say’s that bigger “cartridges” can’t be used. Short of AAA titles, most every game on the PS4/Xbox One is less that 16GB. While they would cost more, there is no reason why 64GB or larger “cartridges” couldn’t be used. Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U is only 4.9GB…

          1. The files probably are not compressed.

I mean look at Xenoblade Chronicles X- that game is much larger than SFV, yet is only around 25GB. That’s because its files were compressed.

            1. I’m not extremely tech savvy so I have to ask because I’ve always wondered. Compressing files doesn’t negatively effect anything of the files, does it?

              1. It might lower the resolution of textures and reduce sound quality by a little bit, but it’s rarely noticeable.

Another example I can bring up is Mario Kart 8. Game had 32 tracks, all in HD, and yet didn’t even take up 5 gigabytes, not including DLC. Why? Compressed files. Not to mention, most of the data in games is coding like executable files and lines of programming required for the game just to run without crashing.

I’d love to say exactly how much data compressing files shaves off the original size, but it varies. Likely a few megabytes though, at least.

          1. lol ok

I mean I like all those games too, but i think SFV is pretty damn good. The gameplay is very smooth. Why do you consider it to be a piece of shit?

          2. My favorite Street Fighter games were always (in no particular order, so I’ll do release order)…

            Super Street Fighter 2
            Street Fighter Alpha 3
            Capcom vs SNK 2

          1. That article was before all the updates with the cinematic story mode, new stages, characters, dlc, etc. The game will just continue to get bigger and bigger with every season pass. I do think I overshot that number though, I was thinking about BO3 being around 40-45 gigs. I think SFV sits at about 25-30 gigs last time I looked in my storage management.

        1. That’s just a single version of the game, though. The size of game always varies between consoles, anyways. A Switch version of the game would probably turn out much smaller than 40 GB to begin with, and even if that wasn’t enough, if programmers put some effort into optimizing and compressing the data further, they could totally make it fit if they wanted to. I mean, at the most basic level, by just reducing the resolution of all textures by one mip level, you’ll already save over 50% of memory used for textures. For many games, that alone would already be enough. Maybe if the game has video cutscenes, reducing their resolution will also save a lot of space (since videos take a lot of space and just reducing their resolution or quality is always very helpful).

        2. Its also that big because now adays devs either dont compress games to smaller files because they either don’tmt have to, or just dont want to.

    2. enough meth smoking you idiot THE STANDARD<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< SIZE NOT THE ONLKY SIZE YOU MOTHER FUCKING INBRED MORON

      THE """""""STANDARD"""""" SIZE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3DS STANDARD WAS 4GB BUT IT HAD CARTS FROM 512MB TO 8GB YOU PATHETIC LOOSER

      1. A person who often brings up meth in a conversation is a person who used to struggle with meth addition or still does.. You crave it don’t you.. Can you still taste it’s bitter smoke on your tongue before you inhale it…
You may not admit it to others or maybe even lie to yourself but you want it don’t you…
I hope you fail your struggle Bowler you pathetic excuse for flesh..

    3. No, it’s not “bad”. It’s fairly irrelevant. Storage capacity is probably relative to initial development/launch titles. Classic consoles like the SNES, Neo Geo, ect. had cartridge storage size increases, as necessitated by software, throughout their respective life cycles. Besides, nintendo has always been a model/champion of efficiency in storage and compression techniques throughout their history.

    1. The point is that it’s the standard size, not the only supported size.

Since manufacturing cartridges of larger capacities costs more, standardizing on a relatively small size that is still large enough for most games makes sense. Make a smaller number of the higher-capacity cartridges for the games that need them.

If, say, they just decided to have them all be 128GB, that’d be wasteful for games that would fit on 16GB.

    2. ITS THE “””””STANDARD SIZE””””” TAKE A WILD POKE IN THE DARK WHAT THAT MEANS THE STANDARD NOT THE LOWEST OR THE HIGHEST THE MID LEVEL GO TO SIZE

IF YOU REQIURE MORE THERES 32GB AND 64GB IF YOU REQUIRE LESS HAVE A GUESS

IS THGIS ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE EALLY

      1. So.. umm I hear what you are saying.. But all I want to do is murder your fucking dog in that picture.
Slice it’s furry throat ear to ear while it gurgles…

  1. I don’t know… Wii U game discs held 25gb… This sounds odd. Since WSJ doesn’t have a final product in their hands, Im not sold on the accuracy of this

      1. OK, fair enough. I see looking at other games, like Super Mario 3D World is only about 2gb… also, Skyrim apparently was 12gb, at least the special edition.

Guess this is time to admit partial ignorance, although I wasn’t necessarily worried, just more curious as to if that would have an adverse effect on the gaming experience

    1. NOTHING ODD ABOUT IT THERES DIFFERNET SIZES OF ROM RAM CARTS

how is this wrong or strange cards come in differnt sizes 32gb 64gb 16gb and lower
it says the standard size not the ONLY SIZE

      MY BLOOD BOILS AT STUPIDITY

      1. I suppose that makes sense. In that case the author should have clarified that a 16GB card can hold a single layer blu-ray game as long as the game can be compressed further.

  2. Standard means baseline in this case. As an engineer myself I imagine that the cards will use some (surely tweaked for “security”) variant of the SD/MMC protocol because it’s well understood, reasonably fast cheap and bug-free, and already supported by Tegra. Tegra supports SDXC up to 2TB. So Nintendo is likely telling their devs that the baseline is a 16GB card and if the devs need more they can have it but Ninty will need a slightly larger cut of the game sales to cover the more expensive cards. (This is all just speculation on my part based on my experience engineering embedded systems but it’s one likely scenario.)

    1. AT LAST SOMEONE GETS IT

im sick of seing in gaming posts people in thios world are THAT STUPID no wonder they aim with analog sticks there thick as shit

the standard size does not mean the only size THESE PEOPLE VOTE AND RAISECHILDREN SCAREY AS HELL

    2. Or Nintendo may take the hit on a third, half, three fourths the price of the larger cards. I think it is hard for people to understand this unless they have programmed something in their life. I guess the best way is to have them do a simple letter, then letter with tables, and then letter with tables and pictures and see the difference of the save document.

    1. That’s good to know, seriously, but everyone referencing 3DS and vita game sizes i a console discussion is a bit concerning.

  3. ||16GB is more than enough to blow up 5000 Xbots 3 times over…||

    1. Nah, 16gb is pretty small nowadays. XB1 can support up to 50GB on blu-ray discs. I think Halo 5 and Witcher 3 are somewhere in the mid 40’s. I’m not expecting games on the scale of Halo 5 or Witcher 3 on the Switch, but I wasn’t expecting a measely 16 GB either. I hope this isn’t true, because I thought the whole reason for the move back to cartridges was to allow for bigger storage at a lesser price.

      1. ||But if you want a straight answer regarding this subject, this 16GB card is most logically the standard included card just like the 3DS has its own, or the irrelevant Vita…||

      2. It would need to be known why they are 40GBs. This information is not for consumers but for developers. Another developer can make this 40GBs a lot smaller depend how they program and what formats they use. A developer can make that 40GB game to be 200 GB if they use very sloppy coding and unnecessary formats.

      3. Those large sizes you listed refer to installed sizes, not what is on the disc. Dual layer Blu-rays can hold around 50 but single layers around 25 gigs is more common. Considering the capability for compression and the faster read speeds on the proprietary cartridges, I wouldn’t be concerned, as TegraX2 can support microsd XDs up to 2TB. Historically, Nintendo has been pretty good about manufacturing larger carts over time. For context, early DS games launched around 32 megs, but ended up being available up to 512 MB

  4. Just for perspective:
    Nintendo 64: 4MB – 64MB
    Nintendo DS: 8MB – 512MB
    Nintendo 3DS: 128MB – 8 GB

There was always a big leap regarding storage capacity and I see no reason, why it should be different on the Nintendo Switch!

    1. OH LOOK THE GUY HERE GETS IT LOOK AT 3DS A “””””””RANGE””””” OF SIZES

PENNY DROPPED YET PEOPLE AHHHHH HUMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. WHY IS IT THE LOWEST A SELECTION OF RETRO GAMES ON A CART DOESNT NEED 16GB SO I EXPECT THERES LOWER SIZES TO THERE ROM FLASH CARDS THEY CAN BE ANY SIZE

JUST LIKE 3DS A RANGE OF SIZES THIS ARTICLE SAYS NOTHING ABOUT GOOD OR BAD SIZES IT SAYS THE STANDARD SIZE IS LIKELY 16GB THAT IS A BALL PARK FIGURE OF A STANDARD SIZE NOT THE BE ALL AND END ALL SIZE

people casn be stupid as hell it will have carts from very small sizes to very big COMMON FLAMING SENSE

            1. im not worked up i just love to bitch slap idiots

go check the gaf thread regarding this subject its mind boggling how stupid these somy ms fanboys are MIND IMPLODING

FACT 1 THERE IS MANY SIZES OF CARTS no one has said theres a 16gb card and thats it

fact 2 you do not compare BLOATWARE FILE SIZES with effeicent file sizes

itys like terying to explain to them why ice is cold WHO THE HELL JOINS THAT SITE im blown away by how stupid these clinton voters are

              1. lol yeah I used to browse Gaf but they blocked it at work. What I’m more concerned with is the rumor that the max micro sd card will be 128gb for extra storage. If true I hope there will be a way around that, I prefer to go all digital with most purchases.

            2. I got bored a few nights ago and clicked his picture after getting one of his comical messages directed at me. It takes you to his FaceBook page. I saw a picture with him in an Argentina jersey. So Maybe he’s Argentinian?

  5. Well that sucks. So much for my theory that the game cards will have extra room for patches & DLC to be saved DIRECTLY onto the game card itself. :/ With re-writable discs & SD cards being a thing these days, I would have hoped game cards would be able to manage that feature.

    1. how is verious sizes a bad thing are you on drugs

would you buy your 5 yr old child a go large meal at the buger take out and buy yourself the childs meal!!!!!!!!!!

      rrrreeeeeeeetttaaarrrddd

      1. So.. umm I hear what you are saying.. But all I want to do is murder your fucking dog in that picture.
Slice it’s furry throat ear to ear while it gurgles…

        1. While I’m no fan of Bowler AA’s because I think he’s one of the biggest idiots on this blog, threatening his dog was uncalled for. Insult the guy himself all you want because I do it myself but leave the dog alone.

  6. This is mostly insignificant information. The first run of NES carts were Tiiiiny, and they got bigger as the system went on (but still miniscule, by modern standards) to fit whatever later games required. Same with SNES and N64. The type of Solid State memory Nintendo is using for Switch games (similar to DS/3DS cards) is far more versitile and expandable than ‘Carts’ ever were.

Standard sized SD cards can store anywhere from under 2GB, up to HUNDREDS of Gigabytes (I’ve even heard of versions used in professional servers in the Terabytes). The “Game Cards” for the NS look to be pretty beefy in shape compared to an SD card. I have no doubt at all Nintendo can manufacture 128GB+ versions of those on-demand, no problem.

  7. I want to see them succeed with this.
Disc medias are no longer the most effective way of delivering games.
But I’m wondering how cost effective would it be to make 128gb carts for those few triple A games that required it.

If they do too few, it may lead shortages.
If they do too many Nintendo would end up taking hit on it, especially since Nintendo is in no position to shift cost of their choice of media to third party publishers.
Though I guess any unsold cartridges could be refurbished for the next game.

    1. no game needs 128gb at all and thiird partys coulnt compress a wet tissue

dtop using lazy untalented hack software to make a point THERE LAZY AND USE FILE SIZE AS A SHOW OFF

OH MY GOD ITS 50GB HOW HARDCORE the same game could come in a lossless compressed file of say 25gb

its all bloat and its pc devs and x86 cpus that are to blame

      1. I can not make most of what you are saying.
They could compress the files to fir 80 gig uncompressed to 64 gig.
But compression will equal to loading times.

  8. So what I’m hearing, is we are being optimistic that Nintendo’s latest Console, that comes out next year, can probably keep up with AAA game devs that have been developing on consoles that are years old.

You know, if Nintendo really thinks they can keep 3rd party support with this, OK. The standard cart size is fine for Nintendo games. But for games outside the mushroom Kingdom, well,, I guess it doesn’t matter to me at this point.
